I heard once that the "eye of the needle" referred to a small gate within a larger gate. The larger gate to the city being closed at night for security, but people could still come in and out thru the smaller gate. Getting to the city at night time meant that the camel had to squeeze thru the small gate. In order to do so the camel had to get down really low and crawl thru with its legs bent. It could be done, but it was very difficult.
See how they bend down to allow people to dismount.
