I am the OP and just wanted to clarify In the cited example:
Thermoluminescence materials that are cheap, safe and abundant could be used in sterling engines to increase efficiency by dumping waste heat from the cold side back to the hot side.
The heat is converted into light energy to offload the heat on the cold side.
Then the light that is produced can be reflected, concentrated etc back to the hot side of the sterling engine thus increasing efficiency
