As bioterrorism fears grow, the first treatment for smallpox has been approved.

 

Called tecovirimat, the drug stops the variola virus, which causes smallpox, from sending out copies of itself and infecting other cells. โ€œIf the virus gets ahead of your immune system, you get sick,โ€ says Dennis Hruby, the chief scientific officer of pharmaceutical company SIGA Technologies, which took part in developing the drug. โ€œIf you can slow the virus down, your immune system will get ahead.โ€

 

An advisory committee to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration unanimously recommended approval of tecovirimat, or TPOXX, on May 1. The FDA announced the approval July 13.

 

Unchecked, smallpox kills about 30 percent of people infected and leaves survivors with disfiguring pox scars. Between 300 million and 500 million people died of smallpox in the 20th century before health officials declared the disease eradicated in 1980 after a worldwide vaccination campaign. For research purposes, samples of the virus remain in two locations โ€” one in the United States, the other in Russia.

 

People havenโ€™t been routinely vaccinated against the disease since the 1970s. So โ€œit would be catastrophic if it were to reappear accidently or in the case of a bioweapon attack,โ€ says molecular virologist Robin Robinson. He is the former director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, a federal agency thatโ€™s focused on protecting against biological and other threats and that assisted in the drugโ€™s development.

 

Fears that the disease could be used as a biological weapon have risen in light of anthrax attacks and other terrorist acts of this century. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases classifies smallpox as a Category A priority pathogen, because the disease spreads easily from person to person and can be highly fatal.

 

Researchers tested how well the drug stops smallpox in animals, while trials to determine the safety and dose of the drug were conducted in people. In monkeys and rabbits infected with viruses related to smallpox, tecovirimat prevented around 90 percent of the animals from dying, says SIGA CEO Phil Gomez. Nearly all of the animals that did not receive the drug died.

 

A smallpox infection does not produce symptoms right away. After 10 to 14 days, a fever and rash occurs โ€” thatโ€™s when a person is most contagious โ€” followed by the formation of poxes. The drug is meant to be taken at the fever and rash stage. Data from the animal studies, Hruby says, suggest that few poxes will form once the drug is taken and patients will heal more quickly.

 

โ€œPreparing for disasters comes in different shapes and forms,โ€ says Grant McFadden, who studies poxviruses at Arizona State University in Tempe and was not involved with the development of tecovirimat. โ€œThis is preparing for an infectious disease disaster.โ€ In the event that smallpox reappears, โ€œyou need drugs to actually block the progression of the disease.โ€

 

Two million treatments of TPOXX are already in the U.S. Strategic National Stockpile of drugs and supplies for public health emergencies, Gomez says, a move allowed under emergency preparedness legislation. The news of Imran Awanโ€™s sweetheart plea deal emerged quietly during Fourth of July week, but it hasnโ€™t gone unnoticed here, even with the predominant story right now being President Trumpโ€™s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. My initial thought about the Awan deal was, โ€œOh, man, the DOJ has buried another scandal,โ€ and many readers agreed, some commenting they were disgusted and even literally sickened by the outcome.

 

But one response offered an interesting take. Mind you, it involves giving Jeff Sessions the benefit of the doubt and picturing him as working steadfastly behind the scenes to ensure that justice is eventually done. Not easy, I know; itโ€™s like being the kid who gets a pile of manure at Christmas and just KNOWS there has to be pony in there somewhere! But for the moment, letโ€™s try to do that and take the ride with reader Bonnie Robinson.

 

โ€œWhen you want to catch a fish, you use a smaller fish,โ€ she reminds us. Of course, we already knew thatโ€™s been the strategy behind the treatment of Paul Manafort โ€” were you aware heโ€™s spending 23 out of every 24 hours in solitary confinement before heโ€™s been tried, even though the only charge against him is unrelated to the โ€œRussiaโ€ investigation and goes back many years? โ€” to get cooperation against President Trump, but it applies here as well.

Robinson points out that since plea deals come as part of an agreement to cooperate with investigators, Awan has likely provided them with information relating to the Democrats who hired him. If sheโ€™s right, that means that for a deal as sweet as the one he got, heโ€™s likely been singing like Pavarotti.

 

But Robinson goes on to address another aspect of this case: namely, how unlikely it is that an objective grand jury could be empaneled in Washington, D.C., for a case against congressional Democrats charged with something as serious as (perhaps) treason. The same would go for prosecutors and judges assigned to such a case. She reminds us that with all the evidence against the FBI presented in the IG report, the Inspector General left out that same part: the prosecution part. โ€œDo you think this was going to be litigated in this setting?โ€ she asks.

 

So, if itโ€™s not going to be handled in D.C., where WILL it be handled? Robinson suggests that itโ€™s moving from D.C. to Utah, under U.S. Attorney John Huber, who was selected by Attorney General Sessions to handle cases related to the IG report. Remarkably, Huber operates with a staff of 470 investigators, far exceeding the investigative power of a special counsel. One other possibility, if the cases relating to Awan include allegations of treason or other matters of national security, is that they will be tried in a military court, away from the media and the chance of compromising sensitive information, sources or methods. That lessens the likelihood that any โ€œbig fishโ€ will get away on a technicality.

 

โ€œRest assured,โ€ Robinson concludes, โ€œthis entire case is being handled with the utmost care.โ€

 

Itโ€™s hard to have confidence in that, especially when weโ€™ve watched certain people skate for so long, but letโ€™s hope sheโ€™s right. Sessionsโ€™ decision to call upon John Huber to team up with the IG and conduct a full-fledged criminal investigation in Utah, in the clean mountain air far from the stinky D.C. swamp, may turn out to be every bit as brilliant as top legal expert Jonathan Turley said it was in March.

I mentioned this a earlier today so maybe it didnt strike anyone else as odd but at the 6:30 mark, the queen has POTUS move to her right. Given that the great majority of posed pictures always have dignitaries to her left (even while traveling abroad while meeting with Bush in Washington) this seemed odd to me. It also moved him under the coat of arms at the peak of the tent. Given the symbolism Q talks about, this seemed worth looking into.

Also, compared to other presidents receptions by the queen, this one stood out as lacking other prominent people attending. It was just the queen and the forces to review. Either the royal family are all drinking the MSM koolaid or they just lost something very big to POTUS and are not happy.

Yes, Putin reads and speaks French just fine. He is fluent in German so it is not too hard for a Russian who knows a second language closely related to English, to learn English itself.

 

Mostly he just follows protocol and speaks only Russian because that plays really well to the folks back home. Also, he has a strong accent when he speaks English so he avoids it. There was one world leader event where everyone had to perform a song, and Putin played the piano and sang Blueberry Hill.

SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah) - Two different messages in two days are sending mixed signals to the public.

 

Monday, the U.S. Attorney was satisfied that William Keebler of Tooele got 25 months in jail for attempting to set a federal building on fire.

 

"We can have deeply held political beliefs and disagreements with the government," said John Huber, the U.S. attorney. "But we cannot then conspire and plan out criminal acts and intentions."

 

But Keebler was released from jail because he was credited with time served.

 

Tuesday, President Donald Trump issued a pardon on another case involving the federal government and an Oregon rancher and his son. The Hammonds were imprisoned for setting fires on federal lands. The president called it an "overreach" by the federal government.

 

A spokesperson from the U.S. Attorney's Office had no comment as to whether the pardon undermines the work of federal prosecutors. But others see the president as the one "overstepping."

 

"We think its outrageous," said Stephen Bloch, the legal counsel for the Souther Utah Wilderness Alliance. "The Hammonds were convicted by a jury, sentenced according to federal law and the actions by the president really throw up in the air the question of how much the rule of law applies on our federal lands."

 

In 2014, Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy was inspired by the Hammonds and staged his own standoff with the federal government. His charges were later dismissed.

 

Bundy is a member of the Independent American Party whose members in Utah praised the president.

 

"The constitution lays out, gives the president the ability to pardon citizenry when the courts get it wrong and frankly the courts of law got it wrong up in Oregon," said Jason Christensen.

 

San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman served 10-days in jail for leading an ATV protest ride on federal land. He says the pardons should be seen as a clear message.

 

"I was thrilled that President Trump has pardoned the Hammonds," Lyman said. "Maybe there really are some bad actors in the BLM and the Federal Bureau of Investigation that warrant a review of some of these convictions.

 

Lyman said his case is one of those. In fact, he acknowledged that others are pushing the white house to overturn his federal conviction.

"I think it (pardon) calls into question whether people are going to be held into account when they donโ€™t follow the law," Bloch said. "And it really seems like theyโ€™re playing favorites. The Hammonds, similar to the Bundys, similar to Phil Lyman in San Juan County were all people who flaunted federal law."

My dad is Christian and gave me my religious upbringing, despite having a Jewish mom. I did always find it curious that Paul wrote something like "The Jews have been made a villain against you."
