According to a Monday report from Deadline, major Hollywood heavyweight Lionsgate Studios is offering its U.S.-based employees “voluntary severance” and early retirement options as the company continues to restructure amid a turbulent industry landscape.

Deadline obtained a memo from Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer, confirming the news.

“We are offering Lionsgate U.S.-based employees a voluntary severance and early retirement program that will allow us to adapt our workforce to the disrupted business environment,” Feltheimer wrote in the memo.

As to just how “voluntary” these severance options are, Deadline noted, “as these things go, layoffs could be a next step depending upon how many staffers take up the packages, which are focused at Lionsgate Studios.”

Deadline attributed a number of reasons for why the Hollywood studio — known for some blockbuster franchises like “John Wick,” “The Hunger Games,” and “Saw” — decided to start down this path.

A “contracting media and entertainment landscape” is one reason given, as is the studio’s business dealings, like when it “absorbed” eOne (now Lionsgate Canada).

Another recent business dealing that Lionsgate was in the headlines for? An unprecedented deal with Runway, a “first-of-its-kind”deal that was reported on by the Wall Street Journal on Sept. 18.

That deal, which gave Runway’s generative AI models nebulous and wide-reaching powers over Lionsgate’s content library, was met with a less-than-enthused response from onlookers.

An arbitrator has ruled that Calgary’s Mount Royal University (MRU) acted in a “disproportionate” manner in late 2021 in its firing of tenured professor Frances Widdowson.

Widdowson joined MRU in 2008 and was granted tenure – a virtual lifetime appointment – in 2011. She taught courses in political science and policy studies, with a specialization in Indigenous peoples’ policy and Indigenous affairs.

While the decision was delivered in July, it has only now been revealed.

Dr. Widdowson, an outspoken critic of the politically charged but theoretically simplistic notions of the academic culture wars at Mount Royal and elsewhere, expressed nearly exclusively on her Woke Academy website and social media, was fired just before Christmas 2021 during what arbitrator D.P. Jones called a “Twitter War” between her and a few activist colleagues opposed to her views.

The hearing took 30 days spread over 10 months as 25 witnesses gave evidence. It included thousands of pages of exhibits, focusing on complaints of harassment filed by Widdowson’s colleagues, countered by Widdowson’s claims that she was the one who was being harassed.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is urging all provincial premiers to join New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs’ federal carbon tax legal challenge.

The federation’s call follows Higgs relaunching another legal challenge against the federal carbon tax as the province nears an election this month.

“Higgs is right that the carbon tax is an unfair punishment on Canadians, and all premiers should stick up for their taxpayers by following his lead,” said Franco Terrazzano, CTF Federal Director.

New Brunswick, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan have provincial elections in Oct.

“Taxpayers are taking it on the chin every time we pay our heating bills, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is blowing a hole through constitutional accountability with his unequal application of the carbon tax,” added Terrazzano.

While the CTF called on all premiers to join the fight, the federation’s prairie director, Gage Haubrich, specifically called on the Saskatchewan Premier and the province’s NDP leader to join the legal challenge.

Doctors sound alarm on worsening food insecurity after woman diagnosed with scurvy

As food insecurity continues to grow across Canada, doctors are starting to be on the lookout for scurvy, a disease that results from a lack of vitamin C commonly associated with 18th century sailors who’ve been away at sea for long periods of time.

The Canadian Medical Association Journal published a report o​​n Monday detailing the case study of a 65-year-old woman who was diagnosed with scurvy at a Toronto hospital in 2023.

The woman’s diagnosis led the authors to make the case that doctors should be considering the disease as a possibility, especially among patients who have a higher risk of being nutrient deficient like older adults who live alone and those living in poverty.

While discussing her diagnosis, the report concluded that she had a social history which revealed “a several-years-long period of substantial limitations in her instrumental activities of daily living, including grocery shopping and meal preparation, owing to difficulties ambulating, attributed to symptoms of leg claudication,“ reads the report.

“She reported little social and family support. This social isolation had resulted in a sustained period of dietary intake limited to predominantly nonperishable foods — specifically, canned soup and tuna fish, along with white bread and processed cheese.”

In addition to a poor diet, the woman was not taking any supplements or vitamins.

According to the report, people with a lower income are more likely to skip meals and eat food with reduced nutritional value when they do eat. Continue…

20-year-old Mohammad Shahzeb Khan, an international student from Pakistan studying in Canada, is accused of plotting a mass shooting attack to “slaughter as many Jewish civilians as possible” around the one-year marking of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led terror attack on Israel.

Khan was originally in Canada on a study permit he applied for in March 2023. After being approved as an international student, Khan landed in Toronto on June 23, 2023. Immigration officials have said Khan didn’t raise any red flags during his immigration application.

As reported by the CBC, his immigration consultant told the public broadcaster that the alleged ISIS terrorist was in the process of claiming refugee status in Canada based on his sexual orientation.

“He said he was gay,” Fazal Qadeer, Khan’s immigration consultant, told the CBC.

Khan is currently detained in a Montreal jail. At the same time, the U.S. seeks his extradition to face a charge of attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated terror group, ISIS.

The European Court of Justice will hear a case on November 15 concerning European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen’s handling of Covid-19 vaccine procurement, the Financial Times has said, citing anonymous sources. A panel of 15 judges will reportedly consider whether she illegally withheld private text messages she supposedly exchanged with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla.

At the height of the pandemic, the commission advocated collectively purchasing billions of shots and distributing them among EU member states struggling to contain Covid-19. In 2020 and 2021, Brussels struck deals with vaccine manufacturers to the tune of approximately €2.7 billion ($2.95 billion).

It is believed that Von der Leyen played a key role in organizing the procurement, with critics claiming the negotiations were not transparent enough.

In its article on Monday, the Financial Times noted that the EU court’s Grand Chamber, which is reportedly going to weigh the evidence, usually deals with complex or particularly important cases.

According to a report in Indian Express, the probe was launched after searches were conducted by tax authorities in September 2022 at the Indian offices of five NGOs – Oxfam, Centre for Policy Research (CPR), Environics Trust, Legal Initiative for Forest and Environment, and Care India Solution for Sustainable Development.

After conducting raids a year later, tax authorities issued notices to the NGOs consisting of hundreds of pages and including various agreements, financial statements, emails, and minutes from board meetings in support of allegations against the organizations.

The NGOs are suspected of acting in contravention of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), which regulates the acceptance and utilization of foreign contributions or foreign funds by certain individuals or associations. The US-led bloc wants to increase the number of ground-based air defense units by five times to counter Moscow, according to the outlet

NATO is planning to dramatically increase the number of its combat units amid tensions with Russia, the daily Die Welt reported on Saturday, citing a confidential planning document it obtained from the German Defense Ministry.

Entitled the “Minimum Capability Requirements,” it was reportedly written by two top commanders of the US-led bloc: American General Christopher Cavoli, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and French Admiral Pierre Vandier, who is responsible for the bloc’s doctrinal and transformation issues.

The document outlines the basic requirements NATO has to fulfil if it plans to defend “every centimeter” of its territory in a potential conflict with Moscow, Die Welt said.

Cavoli and Vandier explain that the current number of the bloc’s combat brigades is insufficient for this task and should be increased from 82 to 131. Under German army standards, the strength of such new formations should be around 5,000 soldiers each, the newspaper said, without explaining if the NATO strategy paper outlined any specific requirements.

The number of corps and divisions is also to be increased from six to 15 and from 24 to 38 respectively, according to the document. The number of ground-based air defense units equipped with systems such as US-made Patriots or the German-made IRIS-T should be expanded fivefold from 293 to 1467, the outlet said. Continue…

India is planning an international pilot project for June 2025 that will see the introduction of facial recognition technology beyond domestic traveling in the region.

Digi Yatra Foundation CEO Suresh Khadakbhavi said the pilot project will initially commence between two countries, and there is progress being made with the Bureau of Immigration and visa-issuing agencies to enable the service for international visitors flying to and from India, Business Standard reports.

This follows Digi Yatra’s domestic rollout, which allows Indian passengers to board using facial recognition at select airports. The program currently operates at 24 airports including Delhi, Varanasi, and Bengaluru. The plan is to add 4-5 more domestic airports in the coming months.

As well as the implementation of facial recognition as a boarding pass for foreign travelers, Digi Yatra will be accessible in both regional and international languages, according to reports from Infra. Continue…

On October 6, Pope Francis announced that 21 bishops will be made cardinals in a consistory on December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, including 53-year-old Archbishop Francis Leo from the Diocese of Toronto, Ontario.

“I am humbled and honoured to receive this appointment from the Holy Father,” Leo wrote in a diocesan press release. “I pray and rely on the prayers of the faithful in Toronto that I will be a worthy servant of the Lord Jesus in fulfilling my responsibilities as a member of the College of Cardinals and to continue in my primary role as shepherd of the faithful of the Archdiocese of Toronto.”

“I entrust to the Blessed Mother Mary, myself and this new ministry of service to the Universal Church and to the Successor of St. Peter, the Pope,” he added.

Of the 21 new cardinals, 20 will be cardinal electors upon the day they are created because they are under the age of 80. After the December 8 consistory, Francis will thus render the College of Cardinals to be almost entirely composed of men he appointed. Continue…

Retired Manitoba judge Brian Giesbrecht observed that allegations were made with 'no real evidence' and that reports 'that thousands of indigenous children had died at residential schools under suspicious circumstances' are patently 'false.'

A retired Canadian judge blasted what he said is a “conspiracy theory” lie and “shocking” yet unproven “accusation” being pushed by the Liberal federal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and legacy media that thousands of Indigenous residential school kids died due to negligence by the Catholic priests and nuns.

“The Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) accused Canadian priests, nuns, teachers, and staff at residential schools of somehow being responsible for the disappearance of thousands of indigenous children who attended the schools. That is a shocking accusation,” retired Manitoba judge Brian Giesbrecht wrote in a commentary piece published in the Western Standard last week.

“But it is even more shocking that the accusation was made with no real evidence to support it.”

Giesbrecht observed that reports from TRC commissioners that “that thousands of indigenous children had died at residential schools under suspicious circumstances” are patently “false.”

“Those allegations were false, and based on a conspiracy theory,” Giesbrecht said.

The judge lamented the fact that hundreds of Christian (mostly Catholic) churches have been burned to the ground since the first TRC report came out in 2010, with more than 100 being reduced to ashes since 2021.

In 2021 and 2022, the mainstream media and federal government ran with inflammatory and dubious claims that hundreds of children were buried and disregarded by Catholic priests and nuns who ran some of the schools. Continue…
