As per PayPal’s policy updates page (issued on September 23 for US users), the service is set to exchange your data with third-party merchants “to help improve your shopping experience and make it more personalized for you.” Starting in early Summer 2025, the new policy will not just come at the detriment of your privacy – even if you’re using the best VPN apps – but PayPal will start gathering data as early as November 27, 2024.

Users appear to be opted in by default (see image below), which may be an issue under some privacy regulations like GDPR. After coming across some US-based accounts complaining about this on Twitter, I decided to check if that was the case also for people in the UK (where I’m based). The latest report from the Parliamentary Budget Officer reaffirmed that Canadian households are paying out more than they receive back in rebates, despite repeated claims from the Liberals to the contrary.

This has led the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and the Conservatives to call for the Trudeau government to finally scrap the federal carbon tax now that the report has confirmed using the Liberal’s own data, that it’s making Canadians poorer.

“Our ‘fiscal impact only’ estimates of household net cost include the federal fuel charge paid directly and indirectly, as well as the related Goods and Services Tax (GST) paid, less the Canada Carbon Rebate received,” reads the report.

The CTF said the report noted that yet again “politicians’ favourite talking point is incorrect” and that Canadian households continue to get less in return than they’re forced to spend.

“The average household in each of the backstop provinces will see a net cost, paying more in the federal fuel charge and GST, as well as receiving lower incomes (due to the fuel charge), compared to the Canada Carbon Rebate they receive,” the report continued. Continue…

Canada’s unemployment rate drops for first time since January by 0.1%

Canada’s economy saw 46,700 new jobs added in September, with the unemployment rate dropping to 6.5%, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada.

The agency released its Labour Force Survey on Friday, which found that the 0.1% decline in the unemployment rate was the first decrease since January.

“Employment rose by 47,000 (+0.2%) in September while the employment rate declined 0.1 percentage points to 60.7%. The unemployment rate fell 0.1 percentage points to 6.5%,” reads the survey.

Employment rose the most of any cohort among youth aged 15 to 24, up 1.2%, followed by women aged 25 to 54 which saw an uptick of 0.3%.

Economic sectors which saw an increase in employment were “information, culture and recreation (+22,000; +2.6%), wholesale and retail trade (+22,000; +0.8%) and professional, scientific and technical services (+21,000; +1.1%).”

Provincially, Manitoba saw the highest increase in employment, up 0.7%, followed by Nova Scotia with a gain of 0.6%.

Ontario and Quebec both saw an increase of 0. while British Columbia saw a decrease of 0.6% as well as New Brunswick of 1%. Continue…

The Ontario College of Psychologists has failed to find a ‘social media expert’ to conduct the mandated training for Dr. Jordan Peterson, despite their ardent legal efforts over the past two years to make it happen.

First, he said, the College attempted to bribe him into just retiring and giving up his license himself, in exchange for not having to pay the legal fees the courts ruled he owes them for their years-long legal battle.

“Don’t assume that the target of your offer is open to something approximating a bribe, because that is what it was, particularly when all evidence suggests the contrary,” Peterson told them publicly.

The offer appears to have been a semi-bluff as well.

After Dr. Peterson rejected the offer, putting the ball back in the College’s court, the College then informed Dr. Peterson that they have been unable to find someone to conduct the mandated training, despite spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on legal battles over the past two years to ensure it would happen.

“There was not a single available ‘social media expert’ available at hand to take on the task!” Dr. Peterson stated.

Dr. Peterson further said he assumes their inability to find someone up to the task is because he’s publicly stated multiple times that he would record the entire social media training and subsequently broadcast it to the world, making the job one that would surely be ridiculed by millions of observers worldwide. The report found a “sponsorship effect” that tends to bias sponsored studies toward reporting higher drug efficacies. The author could not find differences in study design between those funded by drug companies and those not.

“Removing the sponsorship effect would reduce the difference in efficacy … by about 50%,” Tamar Oostrom, an assistant professor of economics at Ohio State University, said in her paper.

Teva Pharmaceuticals USA Inc. and Teva Neuroscience Inc. (collectively, Teva) have agreed to pay $450 million to resolve allegations that they violated the Anti-Kickback Statute (AKS) and the False Claims Act (FCA), according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

Teva is an Israeli company, with U.S. headquarters in Parsippany, New Jersey, and is the largest generic drug manufacturer in the United States, according to the DOJ.

The settlement amount was based on Teva’s ability to pay, the DOJ said.

At least two people are dead, and nearly three dozen others suffered injuries after a chemical leak at an oil refinery Thursday, prompting a shelter-in-place order for two East Texas cities, officials said.

The leak took place at Pemex Deer Park, about 18 miles east of Houston, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.

The department reported deputies, and the Deer Park Fire Department responded to the facility at 5:23 p.m. local time for a report of a hydrogen sulfide leak, a colorless gas with a strong odor.

The facility where the incident occurred was a refinery that processes crude oil to produce gasoline and other fuels. Officials announced a shelter-in-place order for Deer Park and Pasadena after the leak.

In its initial alert Thursday, officials reported several people had suffered injuries, and one was killed in a chemical incident.

In a late Thursday night update, the sheriff’s office announced two people had died, and 35 people had received medical treatment in connection to the leak. The agency also said the shelter-in-place order had been lifted.

Sheriff’s office Senior Deputy Thomas M Gilliland told USA TODAY Friday that five of the injured were transported to local hospitals to be treated for unspecified injuries. PEMEX Deer Park said a “gas release was reported at one of its operating units” at 4:40 p.m., ABC News reported.
