Nearly 20,000 migrants illegally crossed the border from Canada into the Swanton Border Patrol Sector. Officials report this is more than the prior 17 years combined.

In FY2020, President Donald Trump’s last full year in office, only 574 migrants crossed into the Swanton Sector’s area of operation in Eastern New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire, according to a social media post by Swanton Sector Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia. By FY22, that number nearly doubled to 574. From there, the numbers skyrocketed to 6,925 in FY23 and 19,222 in FY24. Continue…

BREAKING: Dockworkers union reaches deal to suspend strike until January: report

https://thepostmillennial.com/breaking-dockworkers-union-reaches-deal-to-suspend-strike-until-january-report

The suspension agreement will allow the union and the US Maritime Alliance time to negotiate a new six-year contract

The union representing dockworkers at East and Gulf coast ports has reportedly reached a deal to suspend their strike until January 15. This suspension would allow time for the International Longshoremen’s Association to negotiate a new contract with the US Maritime Alliance.

A person briefed on the matter told the Associated Press that the union is would resume working immediately until at least January.

The suspension agreement will allow the union and the US Maritime Alliance time to negotiate a new six-year contract. The source said that both sides had reached an agreement on wage increases. US Maritime Alliance represents the shippers and ports.

The union went on strike early Tuesday after their contract expired over pay disagreements and the automation of tasks. The strike affected 36 ports which handle around half of al cargo ships coming into and out of the country.

The president of the union, Harold Daggett, said that the strike would "cripple" the US. “I will cripple you and you have no idea what that means,” Daggett said.

“Everything in the United States comes on a ship. They go out of business. Construction workers get laid off because the materials aren't coming in, the steel's not coming in, the lumber is not coming in. They lose their jobs,” Daggett said, insisting that the companies would be “better off sitting down and let’s get a contract.”

Edmonton city council approves 15-minute city plans

https://www.westernstandard.news/alberta/edmonton-city-council-approves-15-minute-city-plans/58369

It looks like Edmonton will be turning into a 15-minute city.

The City of Edmonton said it will be modernizing its plans for growth expected now and over the coming decades, as city council approved the District Policy and Plans to form 15-minute communities.

“We have taken major strides in streamlining how planning and development happens through the new District Policy and Plans City Council approved and through the new Zoning Bylaw approved a year ago,” said Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi in a Wednesday press release.

“These two initiatives support City Council’s goal of making it easier to build in Edmonton as we continue to welcome record numbers of newcomers to our City and see record numbers of housing development permits.”

City of Edmonton Deputy City Manager, Urban Planning and Economy Kim Petrin said the District Policy and Plans “shape the future of Edmonton’s neighbourhoods, advancing the City Plan vision of a vibrant, urban and climate-resilient city where residents can easily access amenities and services close to home.”

“The District Policy and Plans will be an important part of guiding growth and development in Edmonton, showing Edmontonians how and where they can expect their communities to change and evolve over time,” said Petrin.

As the City of Edmonton continues building through the 2050 timeframe outlined in the City Plan, it said the District Policy and Plans and zoning bylaw will play a role. It added the District Policy and Plans set the general direction for how communities will grow and change over time, and zoning determines what can be developed on a plot of land now.

With Edmonton city council’s approval, the new policy and plans took effect on Wednesday. It will consider the Rabbit Hill District Plan at a future public hearing.

The City of Edmonton concluded by saying it will begin implementing them immediately. A digital map of the boundaries, nodes, and corridors is available on edmonton.ca/districtplanning to help people explore the changes in detail.

“District Plans are key in bringing the City Plan’s 'Community of Communities' vision to life by laying the foundation for 15-minute communities,” it said.

“This vision is for new and current residents to enjoy more housing, recreation, education and employment opportunities in all of Edmonton’s districts and to have more travel options within and across districts.”

Strike vote looms for Alberta nursing union as contract talks prove unsuccessful

https://www.westernstandard.news/alberta/strike-vote-looms-for-alberta-nursing-union-as-contract-talks-prove-unsuccessful/58377

Alberta nurses might be standing on the picket line in the near future amid recent talks with the government failing because of disagreements about pay and recruitment.

United Nurses of Alberta (UNA) Director of Labour Relations David Harrigan said to The Canadian Press on Thursday the talks it held with the government in September were beneficial, although the gap between the two sides was too large.

“Unfortunately I think the gulf is just too big,” said Harrigan to The Canadian Press.

The UNA represents more than 30,000 nurses and wants 30% pay raises over two years. Meanwhile, the Alberta government has offered 7.5% over four years.

While money is one matter, Harrigan said another area the two sides are clashing over is operational issues, particularly staffing shortages and managing the workplace conditions coming from them.

“I think both recognize there are some real, serious, serious problems,” he said.

“It’s just that we have completely different views on how to solve those problems.” Continue…

Global demand for LNG expected to reach record levels next year

https://tnc.news/2024/10/03/global-demand-lng-reach-record-levels/

The International Energy Agency projects a significant increase in global demand for liquefied natural gas next year, mostly driven by intensified pursuit of the resource in Asia and Europe.

This surge in demand is set against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions and strategic energy shifts including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

According to the IEA, 2025 is expected to see Europe requiring more LNG, potentially leading to tighter supplies and higher prices. Data shows that global gas demand could reach 4,293 billion cubic metres by next year, nearly 100 billion cubic metres more than in 2024.

This development comes at a time when the threat of Russian gas supplies being cut off via Ukraine looms large, exacerbating the continent’s energy security concerns.

Despite a slight decrease in overall gas use in Europe, attributed to a slow recovery in industrial sectors and a transition towards renewable energy, the demand for LNG remains robust, particularly for power generation and heating.

Europe’s energy costs, while receding from the peak crisis levels witnessed in 2022, continue to hover above historical averages. This persistent high cost is largely influenced by ongoing conflicts, notably in Ukraine and the Middle East, which have disrupted traditional gas supplies and market stability.

Conversely, Asia is poised to be the powerhouse of LNG demand growth. Despite Europe’s strategic pivot towards renewables, the Asian market’s hunger for energy continues unabated, driving global LNG trade. Continue…
