'Iron Dome Proved to Be a Bust': Iran Strikes Israel in Retaliation for Assassinations
Iran launched a significant retaliatory attack against Israel late Tuesday night, ending months of speculation about how or whether the country would strike back after its provocative killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
The United States reportedly provided Iran with assurances after the attack against Haniyeh in July that Israel and the US would move constructively towards the establishment of a Palestinian state, ending Israelâs military aggression against its neighbors and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where over 42,000 have died according to figures reported by the territoryâs health ministry. Tel Avivâs deadly attack against Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon last week dashed hopes of a cessation of violence as Israel claims it is preparing for a broader invasion of Lebanon.
âI've seen the videos and you can see the missiles continue to rain down and hit targets. Israel is imposing a news blackout,â former CIA analyst Larry Johnson said. âThey don't want the knowledge out there about what happened. But Iran made sure that it was not going to hit and run the risk of killing hundreds or thousands of Israeli civilians.â
âThey were not going to act like the Israelis,â the analyst claimed. âThey really consider themselves, if you will, more humane, more honorable, and by virtue of their action, I think they can make that case.â
Johnson claimed Iran was forced to strike Israel after false assurances from the United States that Israel would cease attacks on its neighbors after its killing of Haniyeh. Iran previously launched a retaliatory attack on Israel in April after Tel Avivâs bombing of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria killed two Iranian generals. The codename Operation True Promise was announced for the strike.
Iranâs Tuesday attack, dubbed Operation True Promise II, appears significantly more substantial than Aprilâs strike in which the vast majority of Iranian missiles, rockets and drones were intercepted by Israelâs Iron Dome. Iran was reportedly able to successfully strike Israeli military targets Tuesday, including an Israeli air base where multiple US-provided F-35 aircraft were hit. Johnson claimed Israelâs attack against Nasrallah wouldâve been launched from an F-35; the fighter jet would be key to any Israeli invasion of Lebanon.
The commentator compared Israelâs Iron Dome to the US Patriot missile system, claiming the US is unable to replenish the defense system rapidly enough to allow Israel to fight a long war of attrition.
âLockheed Martin⌠can make about one and a half, one and a quarter [missiles] a day,â said Johnson. âI think Israel's in a similar situation⌠[Iran] put Israel on notice, âIf you launch any further strikes against us in any retaliation, we're going to hit you harder next time and with more lethality.â So this right now has a chance to really get out of control.â
âI cannot rule out that Israel is going to try to launch some conventional weapons at Iran, but I think they're going to be defeated,â Johnson claimed.
âIsrael may be tempted to try to use a nuclear device against an Iranian target,â he warned. âIf that happens then we're going to really be into another dimension, and this is going to get very, very serious. It's already a serious situation, but it will get absolutely dangerous.â
The analyst suggested Israel would not be able to support military engagement against multiple enemies, even with the United States backing it up.
âIsrael is not in a position to fight a multi-front war and it does not have the strategic depth to fight wars of attrition. And that's exactly what it's got itself into now,â Johnson pointed out. âIt's not going to be able to finish off Hezbollah in a week. It couldn't even finish off Hamas in 12 months. It's not going to be able to finish off Syria, finish off the Houthis or finish off Iran⌠That's what Israel fails to understand. It does not have the ability to sustain itself in these kinds of operations for an extended period of time.â
âIf US ships are involved that are off the coast of Iran, then we'll see Iran react and they may even end up attacking some US ships,â he continued. âBut they'll certainly retaliate against Israel. Israel is not out of the woods at all, despite all the delusional nonsense that the extreme Zionist supporters are saying when they say, âoh, Iran didn't touch us, Iran didn't hurt us at all.â Nonsense.â

Massive Iranian Missile Strike âCompletely Destroysâ Israeli F-35 Base Nevatim: Stealth Fighters Destroyed - Reports
A massive Iranian ballistic missile strike on targets in Israel launched on October 1 has targeted Nevatim Air Base, among other key targets in the country. The facility hosts both of the Israeli Air Forceâs F-35 fifth generation fighter squadrons, and was previously intended to host a third squadron of the fighters after they were delivered. Iranian media sources have reported that the facility was âcompletely destroyedâ in the attack. Footage from Israel has confirmed the impact of dozens of ballistic missiles which Israelâs air defence network failed to shoot down, with targets impacted including the headquarters of the intelligence agency Mossad, located in Tel Aviv which was levelled by the attack. Labelled "True Promise 2,â the operation follows a year of escalating tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv, and represents a long awaited retaliatory attack after an Israeli strike on Tehran on July 31. Iran was previously reported to have agreed not to retaliate if Israel deescalated hostilities, with Israelâs invasion and intensive bombardment of Lebanon and assassination of the leadership of the Iranian aligned militia group Hezbollah having been seen to have broken this agreement.
Reports have indicated that the bulk of Nevatim Air Baseâs F-35s - over 20 fighters - were destroyed in the attack, with the stealth fighters representing one of the most high value targets in Israel. The facility has been widely referred to as Israelâs âmost important air baseâ due to the importance of the F-35 in the countryâs fleet. Israel fields just two squadrons of the costly stealth jets, and relies on them heavily as the remainder of the fighter fleet relies on largely obsolete avionics and old mechanically scanned array radars. F-35s play a central role in Israeli plans for potential attacks on Iran, with their stealth capabilities and advanced avionics, including electronic warfare systems and other air defence suppression features, making them optimal assets for such operations. The destruction of F-35s is thus an important step towards limiting Israelâs ability to respond with further escalation. Although Israel has a third squadronâs worth of F-35s on order, significant issues with production, which remains at a fraction of initially planned rates, has resulted in a very long delivery queue, and means Israel will only begin to receive the newly ordered fighters from 2028.
Israeli and Western officials have widely stressed the need for a strong response against Iran, with White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stating: "There will be serious consequences for Iran as a result of this attack and we will work with Israel to make sure that happens." The Israel Defence Forces announced that its response will be âseen by the entire Middle East,â with Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz stating that the entire âfree worldâ had to support Israel - a reference to expected Western support for future Israeli attacks. The influential U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham meanwhile called on President Joe Biden to authorise attacks on Iranian oil refineries.
The Iranian strike has demonstrated the severe limitations of Israelâs air defence network, despite the country having by far the densest and most sophisticated network of any Western aligned actor - rivalled only by that of Taiwan. Israeli media outlets reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a number of ministers were forced to remain in a fortified underground location in Jerusalem for hours during the attack, with Western correspondents reporting that massive explosions could be felt across Tel Aviv. The current state of the Israeli fighter fleet remains highly uncertain, and alongside the reported destruction of Nevatim Air Base, other fighter losses have been reported including losses of F-15s at Hatzerim Air Base. Previous minor losses were also reported, but not confirmed, after intensified Hezbollah rocket artillery and drone strikes on facilities such as Ramat David Air Base.

Leader: Presence of US, European states âroot causeâ of problems in region
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the root cause of the West Asia region's problems is the presence of the United States and a number of European countries falsely claiming to advocate peace.
Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in a meeting with a group of Iranian elites, scientific talents and top ranks at the countryâs university entrance exam, in the capital Tehran on Wednesday.
The meeting took place hours after the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) fired a massive barrage of long-range missiles at the Israeli-occupied territories in reprisal for the illegal entityâs recent assassination of the top leaders and commanders of the resistance front.
âIn our region, the root cause of problems, which leads to conflicts, wars, concerns and hostilities and such like, results from the presence of the same people who claim to advocate peace and tranquility in the region; that is America and some European countries,â the Leader said.
âIf they get themselves out of this region, beyond a shadow of doubt, these conflicts, these wars, these clashes will come to a complete halt, and the countries of the region will be able to govern themselves, govern their region, and live together in peace, blessing and prosperity.â
Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that he would in the near future address the issues regarding the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
The United States and its western allies have been providing Israel with unstinting support in the realms of finance, logistics and intelligence since October last year, when the occupying regime launched a merciless war on Palestinians in Gaza.
As part of its vicious attempts to expand the scope of war to other fronts across the region, Israel embarked on indiscriminate bombings of southern regions in Lebanon and targeted killings of the Hezbollah resistance movement's senior officials and commanders as well as Iranian military advisors in Syria and Lebanon.
The IRGC's operation on Tuesday night was carried out in response to the barbaric acts of assassination against the leaders of resistance, not least Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollahâs leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and the military commanders of the IRGC and the Lebanese resistance movement.
Dubbed Operation True Promise 2, the military campaign involved the launch of a barrage of more than 180 long-range missiles that, as the elite force announced in a statement, successfully hit "90 percent" of the designated targets, including the âstrategic Israeli centersâ in the occupied territories.
The headquarters of Israel's Mossad spy agency and the regimeâs Nevatim airbase that houses its F-35 warplanes were among the targeted sites by the IRGC.
