No, Tim Walz Is Not Friends With School Shooters

Right-wing lawmakers, pundits, and trolls have jumped on the moment in the vice presidential debate when Tim Walz said he was “friends with school shooters.”

 

During the vice presidential debate on Tuesday night, Tim Walz misspoke and said he had “become friends with school shooters.”

 

A quick search would haverevealed that Walz likely meant to say that he had become friends with the families of school shooting victims. He has repeatedly credited these families—including onstage Tuesday night—with changing his mind on gun control laws, helping him usher in some of America’s most progressive gun safety laws during his time as governor of Minnesota.

 

But if you were to look at right-wing social media feeds on Tuesday night, you could be forgiven for thinking that Walz sympathized with the perpetrators of some of the worst mass shootings in American history.

 

Led by former president Donald Trump, right-wing news feeds lit up with out-of-context video clips, memes, and calls for Walz to be disqualified from running, as Trump, who opposes any sort of gun control laws, launched a disingenuous attack on the Democratic vice presidential candidate.

 

During the debate, both candidates were asked about school shootings and the fact that gun violence is the leading cause of death for children and teens in the US. Vance falsely blamed the prevalence of mental health issues and illegal immigrants for the gun violence crisis in America, and outlined once again why he opposes red-flag gun laws and legislation to ban certain semiautomatic rifles such as AR-15s.

 

When Walz spoke, he revealed that his own son had witnessed gun violence firsthand. “I think all the parents watching tonight, this is your biggest nightmare,” Walz said. “I got a 17-year-old, and he witnessed a shooting at a community center playing volleyball. Those things don’t leave you.”

 

Walz, who has enacted red-flag laws, signed legislation to prohibit automatic-weapon-modification devices, and enhanced background checks to curb the spread of gun violence, explained how his viewpoint of gun control was impacted by meeting the families of school shooting victims.

 

“I sat in my office surrounded by dozens of the Sandy Hook parents, and they were looking at my 7-year-old’s picture on the wall,” said Walz. Their 7-year-olds were dead. And they were asking us to do something. And look, I'm a hunter. I own firearms. The vice president does. We understand that the Second Amendment is there, but our first responsibility is to our kids to figure this out.”

 

“I sat in that office with those Sandy Hook parents,” said Walz, adding: “I've become friends with school shooters. I've seen it.”

 

The Harris-Walz campaign did not respond to a request from WIRED to clarify what Walz meant when he made this comment, but it appears likely he meant to say he had become friends with the families of school shooting victims, given his close relationship with many of them in recent years.

 

On the right, the gaffe was very quickly jumped on to push a disingenuous conspiracy that Walz, who has done more than many lawmakers in recent years to curb gun violence, was in some way compassionate toward school shooters.

 

“Did Tampon Tim just say he has ‘become friends with school shooters?’” Trump wrote on Truth Social, using the nickname he has given Walz. “He isn’t even qualified to be Governor, let alone Vice President. Walz and Kamala DO NOT HAVE WHAT IT TAKES!”

 

Trump then posted two videoclips of Walz making the comment and two graphics with Walz’s picture alongside the quote about school shooters. Trump also shared a screenshot of a post on X from Andrew Pollack, the father of a victim of a school shooting, who wrote: “My daughter was killed in the Parkland school shooting. It’s absolutely abhorrent that Tim Walz has befriended school shooters. Disqualifying.” Pollack’s post on X, which quotes a post from the official Trump War Room account, has been viewed 3.8 million times.

 

Moments later, Trump posted a meme of a mocked-up Trump-Vance yard sign with the tagline “Not Friends of School Shooters”—a meme that was originally posted to X by Laura Loomer, a close ally of Trump who has, until recently, been seen traveling with the former president to campaign events.

 

Loomer, an antisemitic, far-right troll, took the conspiracy further, asking: “Was @Tim_Walz friends with Thomas Matthew Crooks and Ryan Routh too?”—a reference to the men charged with attempting to assassinate Trump in recent months. Loomer also posted a mock-up poster for the sitcom Friends with the actors’ faces replaced by Walz and a number of mass shooters.

While most of the post-debate conversation on television focused on other aspects of the event, Trump was clearly unhappy that more people were not focusing on Walz’s gaffe. “Why aren’t the after shows talking about the fact that Walz said, ‘I’m friends with school shooters,’” Trump wrote around midnight on Tuesday.

 

But across the right-wing ecosystem of talking heads and pundits, the claim that Walz was friends with school shooters quickly took hold.

 

“Calling it right now but Tim Walz saying he's “friends with school shooters” will be the #1 thing remembered about this debate,” Jack Posobiec, the far-right troll and Pizzagate promoter who was part of the official Trump campaign war room for the debate, wrote on Telegram. “It's the 'eating the cats' of the VP debate.”

 

“Is it normal to befriend school shooters?” Charlie Kirk, the founder of the pro-Trump Turning Point USA group, wrote on Telegram.

 

Posobiec also posted multiple memes about the situation, including one showing Walz superimposed into a video of an actual school shooting. He also posted a video recorded by Chaya Raichik, who runs the hate-filled anti-LGBTQ account LibsofTikTok and was also in the GOP’s debate war room.

 

Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News host and close ally of Trump, opened his post-debate show discussing the incident, claiming it “raises a lot of other questions” and failing to account for the fact that Walz misspoke.

 

Hundreds of other right-wing accounts on X posted clips of Walz’s comment without any context, dozens of them racking up millions of views on their posts. Shannon Watts, the founder of gun control activist group Moms Demand Action, hit back at the disingenuous attacks on Walz, outlining his achievements in helping to introduce gun control laws in Minnesota in recent years.

 

“I’ve had the honor of knowing Gov. Tim Walz for years and have had a front-row seat to his compassion and courage on the issue of gun safety,” Watts wrote on X. “He didn’t just listen to the Moms Demand Action volunteers he met with—he kept his commitment to make Minnesota safer.”

 

Watts pointed out that along with the introduction of the red-flag law and universal background checks, Walz’s administration had ushered in “one of the largest investments in community-based violence-prevention programs of any state to date” along with “legislation to prohibit automatic-weapon-modification devices and to collect gun-crime data.”

 

Watts also attacked Vance’s comments on gun safety, pointing out that he recently said that school shootings were a “fact of life” the people “have to accept” in America. During the debate, Vance variously blamed migrants, mental health, and school buildings themselves for the high rates of gun violence, while dismissing the ease of access to gun ownership.

 

“Vance says instead of passing stronger gun laws, we should just turn schools into fortresses guarded by armed police to protect them from gunmen,” wrote Watts. “He neglects to mention that over 80% of school shooters are students, not strangers who walk in out of the shadows.”

 

(Maybe Walz should not be candidate for VP, if he admits he misspeaks a lot.)

I've been mulling things over and something just doesn't smell right. This September saw the completion of a critical milestone for the construction of ESA's new deep space communication antenna in New Norcia, Australia: the lifting of the 122-tonne reflector dish.

A giant wakes as the Sun sets in Western Australia. The workers can finally rest easy after more than a day spent using an enormous crane to lift the colossal 122-tonne, 35-metre diameter reflector dish and crown ESA's newest deep space communication antenna.

With the dish and its quadrupole now installed, ESA is on track to inaugurate its fourth deep-space antenna, and second at the New Norcia site in Australia, by the end of 2025.

Referred to as NNO3, the New Norcia 3 antenna will allow spacecraft to send and receive more valuable data collected from onboard scientific instruments and vital flight instructions for mission operations.

 

The construction of the new deep space antenna is a response to the growing capacity needs of ESA's Programmes.

Over the past years, the demand for deep space ground stations has increased significantly as new and more data-intensive missions come to life.

Yet the capacity of the three existing deep space antennas in ESA's global ground station network (Estrack) has nearly reached its limit.

The addition of NNO3 to the Estrack network will alleviate operational capacity demands for ESA missions in the coming years, while also providing new capabilities for scientific missions, such as:

 

Higher data rates for lunar, astronomical and deep-space missions, thanks to the expansion of the New Norcia site’s downlink portfolio to the K and Ka bands.

New opportunities for radio science research, thanks to the addition of Ka band uplink capability and dedicated radio science related equipment, as required to support the MORE experiment on the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury and the 3GM experiment on ESA's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer.

Increased downlink performance, enabled by combining the reception of signals received at the site's existing deep space antenna, NNO1, and the new NNO3 (known as arraying).

The unique capabilities of this new asset will enable ESA's Programmes to dream up new types of mission with unprecedented technical requirements.

 

Set to be launched in 2031 to perform space weather forecasting from the fifth Earth-Sun Lagrange Point, ESA's Vigil mission, for instance, will require a continuous communication link with Earth, to which NNO3 will contribute.

In addition to primarily serving ESA's own missions, NNO3 will also be a valuable extension to the wider international collaborative network of deep-space antennas.

ESA engages in a number of cross-support agreements with partner space agencies and their deep-space missions and, thanks to its K-band capabilities, NNO3 will play a pivotal role in the science downlink of future partner missions such as NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.

 

The Ground Stations Engineering team at ESA's ESOC mission operations centre in Darmstadt, Germany, has decades of expertise building state-of-the-art ground stations across the globe.

The construction of the NNO3 antenna is performed under ESA lead through an industrial contract by prime-contractors Thales Alenia Space (France), and Schwartz Hautmont Construcciones Metálicas (Spain).

Since the laying of the first stone in June 2022, the antenna tower has been built and the azimuth housing and counterweights assembled. Many underlying infrastructure projects have also been completed.

On 19 September, the antenna’s 122-tonne reflector was lifted and installed on the tower, in an operation requiring millimetre precision.

The combination of the 122-tonne load with the turning radius of approximately 20 m – due to the diameter of the main reflector – required the use of a rare 750-tonne mobile crane brought in specially from Perth, 140 km south-west of New Norcia.

“Reaching this critical milestone paves the way for the final stages of the project and further strengthens the team's determination and motivation,” explains Piermario Besso, NNO3 Project Manager.

“We will soon be able to start the deployment of the various subsystems inside the antenna that are required for the commissioning, testing and validation of the complete system and the deployment of a fully operational, state-of-the-art antenna by the end of 2025.”

 

NNO3 will be the most state-of-the-art of ESA's deep space antennas, employing a series of novel systems and technologies.

It will feature cryo-cooled antenna feeds in X and Ka band, an advanced technology that was recently deployed at ESA's Cebreros and Malargüe antennas and which allows a significant data capacity increase (40—80% depending on the frequency band).

NNO3 is also designed to accommodate future upgrades, particularly a dedicated X-band transmission (80 kW) for emergency use cases, and high data rate uplinks for lunar missions (22.55—23.15 GHz).

It will also feature the next-generation Ground station Monitoring and Control – Common Core (GSMC-CC) system.

 

The NNO3 antenna project includes the extension of the site's dedicated power plant facility, part of ongoing efforts to reduce ESA's environmental impact.

In line with ESA’s sustainability goals, a second photovoltaic power generation system with a maximum output of 100 kW is planned for deployment in 2025 and will extend the existing 250 kW photovoltaic plant, which was built in 2017.

Last but not least, the NNO3 project also featured the construction of a new main control room for the three Australian antennas operated by ESA.

 

This facility has already seen operational action: it was from here that the team successfully tracked the debut flight of Europe's Ariane 6 rocket using the site's launcher tracking antenna, New Norcia 2, in July 2024.

Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, has been ESA’s local partner for the operations and maintenance of its first deep space antenna on the site since 2019 and will likewise be responsible for similar activities related to the new antenna.

'Iron Dome Proved to Be a Bust': Iran Strikes Israel in Retaliation for Assassinations

 

Iran launched a significant retaliatory attack against Israel late Tuesday night, ending months of speculation about how or whether the country would strike back after its provocative killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

The United States reportedly provided Iran with assurances after the attack against Haniyeh in July that Israel and the US would move constructively towards the establishment of a Palestinian state, ending Israel’s military aggression against its neighbors and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where over 42,000 have died according to figures reported by the territory’s health ministry. Tel Aviv’s deadly attack against Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon last week dashed hopes of a cessation of violence as Israel claims it is preparing for a broader invasion of Lebanon.

 

“I've seen the videos and you can see the missiles continue to rain down and hit targets. Israel is imposing a news blackout,” former CIA analyst Larry Johnson said. “They don't want the knowledge out there about what happened. But Iran made sure that it was not going to hit and run the risk of killing hundreds or thousands of Israeli civilians.”

“They were not going to act like the Israelis,” the analyst claimed. “They really consider themselves, if you will, more humane, more honorable, and by virtue of their action, I think they can make that case.”

 

Johnson claimed Iran was forced to strike Israel after false assurances from the United States that Israel would cease attacks on its neighbors after its killing of Haniyeh. Iran previously launched a retaliatory attack on Israel in April after Tel Aviv’s bombing of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria killed two Iranian generals. The codename Operation True Promise was announced for the strike.

Iran’s Tuesday attack, dubbed Operation True Promise II, appears significantly more substantial than April’s strike in which the vast majority of Iranian missiles, rockets and drones were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome. Iran was reportedly able to successfully strike Israeli military targets Tuesday, including an Israeli air base where multiple US-provided F-35 aircraft were hit. Johnson claimed Israel’s attack against Nasrallah would’ve been launched from an F-35; the fighter jet would be key to any Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

The commentator compared Israel’s Iron Dome to the US Patriot missile system, claiming the US is unable to replenish the defense system rapidly enough to allow Israel to fight a long war of attrition.

“Lockheed Martin… can make about one and a half, one and a quarter [missiles] a day,” said Johnson. “I think Israel's in a similar situation… [Iran] put Israel on notice, ‘If you launch any further strikes against us in any retaliation, we're going to hit you harder next time and with more lethality.’ So this right now has a chance to really get out of control.”

 

“I cannot rule out that Israel is going to try to launch some conventional weapons at Iran, but I think they're going to be defeated,” Johnson claimed.

“Israel may be tempted to try to use a nuclear device against an Iranian target,” he warned. “If that happens then we're going to really be into another dimension, and this is going to get very, very serious. It's already a serious situation, but it will get absolutely dangerous.”

The analyst suggested Israel would not be able to support military engagement against multiple enemies, even with the United States backing it up.

“Israel is not in a position to fight a multi-front war and it does not have the strategic depth to fight wars of attrition. And that's exactly what it's got itself into now,” Johnson pointed out. “It's not going to be able to finish off Hezbollah in a week. It couldn't even finish off Hamas in 12 months. It's not going to be able to finish off Syria, finish off the Houthis or finish off Iran… That's what Israel fails to understand. It does not have the ability to sustain itself in these kinds of operations for an extended period of time.”

“If US ships are involved that are off the coast of Iran, then we'll see Iran react and they may even end up attacking some US ships,” he continued. “But they'll certainly retaliate against Israel. Israel is not out of the woods at all, despite all the delusional nonsense that the extreme Zionist supporters are saying when they say, ‘oh, Iran didn't touch us, Iran didn't hurt us at all.’ Nonsense.”

Massive Iranian Missile Strike ‘Completely Destroys’ Israeli F-35 Base Nevatim: Stealth Fighters Destroyed - Reports

 

A massive Iranian ballistic missile strike on targets in Israel launched on October 1 has targeted Nevatim Air Base, among other key targets in the country. The facility hosts both of the Israeli Air Force’s F-35 fifth generation fighter squadrons, and was previously intended to host a third squadron of the fighters after they were delivered. Iranian media sources have reported that the facility was “completely destroyed” in the attack. Footage from Israel has confirmed the impact of dozens of ballistic missiles which Israel’s air defence network failed to shoot down, with targets impacted including the headquarters of the intelligence agency Mossad, located in Tel Aviv which was levelled by the attack. Labelled "True Promise 2,” the operation follows a year of escalating tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv, and represents a long awaited retaliatory attack after an Israeli strike on Tehran on July 31. Iran was previously reported to have agreed not to retaliate if Israel deescalated hostilities, with Israel’s invasion and intensive bombardment of Lebanon and assassination of the leadership of the Iranian aligned militia group Hezbollah having been seen to have broken this agreement.

Reports have indicated that the bulk of Nevatim Air Base’s F-35s - over 20 fighters - were destroyed in the attack, with the stealth fighters representing one of the most high value targets in Israel. The facility has been widely referred to as Israel’s “most important air base” due to the importance of the F-35 in the country’s fleet. Israel fields just two squadrons of the costly stealth jets, and relies on them heavily as the remainder of the fighter fleet relies on largely obsolete avionics and old mechanically scanned array radars. F-35s play a central role in Israeli plans for potential attacks on Iran, with their stealth capabilities and advanced avionics, including electronic warfare systems and other air defence suppression features, making them optimal assets for such operations. The destruction of F-35s is thus an important step towards limiting Israel’s ability to respond with further escalation. Although Israel has a third squadron’s worth of F-35s on order, significant issues with production, which remains at a fraction of initially planned rates, has resulted in a very long delivery queue, and means Israel will only begin to receive the newly ordered fighters from 2028.

Israeli and Western officials have widely stressed the need for a strong response against Iran, with White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stating: "There will be serious consequences for Iran as a result of this attack and we will work with Israel to make sure that happens." The Israel Defence Forces announced that its response will be “seen by the entire Middle East,” with Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz stating that the entire “free world” had to support Israel - a reference to expected Western support for future Israeli attacks. The influential U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham meanwhile called on President Joe Biden to authorise attacks on Iranian oil refineries.

 

The Iranian strike has demonstrated the severe limitations of Israel’s air defence network, despite the country having by far the densest and most sophisticated network of any Western aligned actor - rivalled only by that of Taiwan. Israeli media outlets reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a number of ministers were forced to remain in a fortified underground location in Jerusalem for hours during the attack, with Western correspondents reporting that massive explosions could be felt across Tel Aviv. The current state of the Israeli fighter fleet remains highly uncertain, and alongside the reported destruction of Nevatim Air Base, other fighter losses have been reported including losses of F-15s at Hatzerim Air Base. Previous minor losses were also reported, but not confirmed, after intensified Hezbollah rocket artillery and drone strikes on facilities such as Ramat David Air Base.

Hey aqll.

Been away.

Got a young chopper pilot , commercial, i think 350 hours, no chopper. Would need insurance prolly. Did R44 safety course.

He's prolly too low on hours but, said if he knew where to report in to

volunteer, he'd do what he can flying, relief with a pilot, moving supplies, anything else. Is there anywhere to go on line to get with a crew to help?

Panic-Buying Already Spreading As Dockworker Strike Gets Underway

 

As union dockworkers began striking against employers at East and Gulf Coast ports early Tuesday morning, reports of panic-buying at supermarkets almost immediately started spreading across social media.

 

Video clips posted by social media users on X and Facebook showed people rushing to buy water, toilet paper, paper towels and other items at supermarkets and retailers across the U.S.

 

“Are people already panic buying because of the Port Strike? Here are the grocery shelves in the water section at my local Kroger this morning. Then my dad got this thing he called a "decoder" from the local TV repair shop, and I shit you not, hung it from the clock on the wall above the TV, with wires going down to the TV and then wires drilled through the wall to attach them to the whole trailer to use it as an antenna and we got HBO for free. Then they started scrambling their signal and that put an end to that. The 80s were when the channels went up to a dozen, then at least 20 by the end of the 80s, etc, etc.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the root cause of the West Asia region's problems is the presence of the United States and a number of European countries falsely claiming to advocate peace.

With just over a month to go before the November general election, a=new poll shows Florida's Hispanic voters back Donald Trump over Kamala Harris by a 7-point lead.

 

The Telemundo poll released Tuesday shows the Republican Trump leading Harris by 48% to 41% statewide among Hispanic voters, with 7% undecided and 4% preferring "other."

 

The poll shows 61% of Cuban-Americans favor Trump over Harris, who earned just 28% of their support. Voters with Puerto Rican roots support Harris over Trump by 58% to 33%.

 

Other Hispanic voters back Trump over Harris 47% to 41%.

 

The poll was conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Strategy from Sept. 23 to Sept. 25.

 

A total of 625 registered Hispanic voters statewide were interviewed, randomly selected from a phone-matched Florida voter registration list that included both landline and cell phone numbers.

 

Local

 

Quotas were assigned to reflect Hispanic voter registration by county. All indicated they were likely to vote in the general election. The margin for error, according to standards customarily used by statisticians, is no more than ± 4 percentage points.

 

Hispanic voters in southeast Florida support Trump over Harris 53% to 38%, while those in central Florida support Harris 45% to Trump's 39%. The Tampa Bay area supports Harris over Trump 48% to 43%.

 

Voters were asked a number of questions related to the Nov. 5 election, includingwhich issue is most influential in decided their vote for president. The economy was near the top, followed by protecting democracy in the U.S. Trump voters said immigration was the next most important issue, while Harris voters said it was abortion.

 

When asked which candidate they trust more to handle the economy, Trump leads Harris 51%= to 41% statewide. Asked which candidate they trust more to handle issues related to abortion, Harris and Trump were tied at 47% to 47%.

 

As far as who'smore trusted to handle immigration, Trump leads over Harris 55% to 38% statewide.

 

When it comes to Florida's U.S. Senate race involving incumbent Rick Scott and Democratic challenger Debbie Mucarsel-Powell,Scott leads among Hispanic voters 48% to 37%,with 13% undecided, the poll found.

 

Hispanic voters were also asked about Florida's two major amendments on the ballot. Amendment 3, which would legalize recreational marijuana, showed 50% support, 44% oppose, and 6% are undecided.

 

Amendment 4, which would prohibit government interference with abortion, has 55% support compared to 38% against, with 7% undecided.

The Red Lake shootings were a spree killing that occurred on March 21, 2005, in two places on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Red Lake, Minnesota, United States. That afternoon, 16-year-old Jeff Weise killed his grandfather (an Ojibwe tribal police sergeant) and his grandfather's girlfriend at their home. After taking his grandfather's police weapons and bulletproof vest, Weise drove his grandfather's police vehicle to Red Lake Senior High School, where he had been a student some months before.

 

Weise shot and killed seven people at the school and wounded at least 9 others. The dead included an unarmed security guard at the entrance of the school, a teacher, and five students. After the police arrived, Weise exchanged gunfire with them. After being wounded, he shot and killed himself in a classroom. At the time, it was the deadliest school shooting in the United States since the Columbine High School massacre. It remains the deadliest mass shooting in Minnesota history.

At the time of the shooting, by some accounts, Jeff Weise was living with his paternal grandfather, Daryl Lussier Sr., a sergeant with the Red Lake Police Department, run by the Ojibwe (aka Chippewa) tribal government at the Red Lake Indian Reservation. The household included his grandfather's 32-year-old girlfriend, Michelle Leigh Sigana.[1]

 

The reservation of the Red Lake Band of Ojibwe is in northwest Minnesota and is one of two nationally that are "closed"; only Ojibwe tribal members may live and own land there. Its residents suffer high rates of unemployment, violence, and suicide. Housing is poor, and many students do not finish high school.[2] Work opportunities are limited on the reservation, which has a population of more than 5,000. A study in 2004 found that a high proportion of students in high school had thought of suicide.[3] The nearest grocery stores are 32 miles (51 km) away from Red Lake in Bemidji.[4]

The day of the shootings, Weise retrieved a Ruger MK II .22 caliber pistol from his bedroom and fatally shot his grandfather as he was sleeping; he shot him two times in the head and ten times in the chest. According to Weise's friends, the teenager may have had the gun for as long as a year. Red Lake High School shooting

 

Weise then drove his grandfather's squad car to Red Lake Senior High School, arriving at around 2:45 p.m. CST. As he entered the school through the main entrance, he encountered two unarmed security guards manning a metal detector. Weise shot and killed security guard Derrick Brun with the shotgun, while the other security guard, Leann Grant, escaped without injury, warning students and teachers to take cover.[7][8] Weise proceeded into the main corridor of the school, shooting English teacher Neva Rogers who was pushing a computer cart and conversing with students in the hallway. The students scattered and Rogers ran to knock on Missy Dodd's classroom door. She was let in and initiated lockdown procedures, turning off lights, locking the door, and ushering the students under the tables.[8]

 

Not long after Neva Rogers entered Missy Dodd's room, Weise shot out the glass panel next to the classroom door, reached his arm through, unlocked the door, and stepped into Dodd's study hall. There were fifteen students and three adults in the room.[8][9] Neva Rogers began to pray, crying "God be with us!" Provoked, Weise shot her in the head several times, killing her instantly.[2]

 

The shooter then told students, "If any of you believe in God, now would be a good time to call in a favor."[8] Weise approached a group of students, asking, "Do you guys believe in God?"[8][10] One student, Chon'gai'la Morris replied no, and his life was spared.[10] The rest of the group said nothing, and as a result were shot at.[10] The shooter then turned and asked other students if the same question; those who replied in the affirmative or hesitated to answer were wounded or killed.[8][9]

 

Jeffrey May, a 16-year-old sophomore, tried to wrestle Weise inside the classroom and stabbed him in the stomach with a pencil. May's diversion allowed students to flee the classroom to safety, but Weise shot him two times in the neck and once in the jaw, leaving him seriously injured.[2][11] Weise left Dodd's room a few minutes later to search for more targets. Three students and one teacher lay dead in the class, five more students had been hurt. Weise wandered through the halls and managed to enter one more classroom, where he wounded two more students. A girl hiding inside this classroom heard, the shooter ask, "Do you believe in God?" This time, he did not wait for answers and fired immediately after posing the question.[8]

 

Witnesses said Weise smiled as he was shooting at people. Several survivors claimed that he asked students if they believed in God, shooting them if they answered yes or hesitated to answer.[8][12] This is believed to have been a reference to a widely publicized, but alleged exchange during the 1999 Columbine High School massacre between perpetrator Eric Harris and Columbine victim Rachel Scott.[by whom?] Weise had also used the screen name "do you believe in god."[8] Ryan Auginash was wounded when he affirmed his faith in Christianity.[8][13] Lance Crowe was also wounded for refusing to answer.[citation needed]

 

At around 2:52 p.m., Weise returned to the main entrance, where he wounded two students.[8] The police had arrived quickly and engaged him in gunfire. FBI Special Agent Paul McCabe said the shootout lasted for about four minutes. None of the police officers were injured.[12] After being hit three times in the lower back, right leg, and right arm by police gunfire, Weise retreated to the classroom where he had shot and killed the teacher and three students, yelling "I have hostages!"[14][15] Weise shot and killed two more students who were hiding under tables, before leaning against a wall, putting the shotgun barrel to his chin, and firing, instantly killing himself.[5]

 

The shootings lasted nine minutes. Weise fired a total of 59 shots during the shooting spree; 14 at his grandfather's home and 45 at the school. He fired 37 rounds from his grandfather's Glock handgun, 14 from his Ruger handgun, and eight from the shotgun.[16]

Foreign companies and countries own our ports. Primarily China. With automation, they can shut down the port and cripple the economy whenever they want. With longshoremen, they don't have that control.

They could do a lock out, but the gov't can override that. If there are no more dock workers, then there will be no one to perform the work and no manual machinery to do it with.

 

This is far more important than I realized yesterday.

CBS News opened the vice-presidential debate on Tuesday by claiming that Iran could be "one week" away from having nuclear weapons and asking both candidates if they'd support a "preemptive strike" by Israel to stop the "largest sponsor of terrorism in the world."

 

"Earlier today, Iran launched its largest attack yet on Israel but that attack failed thanks to joint US and Israeli defensive action," CBS's Margaret Brennan declared with zero context as though she was repeating a statement of fact.

 

"President Biden has deployed more than 40,000 US military personnel and assets to that

region over the past last year to try to prevent a regional war," she added, ignoring that the war is rapidly expanding.

Back in November 1978, Americans were shocked by newspaper headlines about the deaths of more than 900 people in the South American nation of Guyana, in what appeared to be a combination of mass murder and suicide by poison. The carnage took place at a jungle camp known as Jonestown. Its founder was a charismatic American religious leader, the Rev. Jim Jones, who had led many of the cult followers of his former San Francisco-based Peoples Temple sect there.

 

The trigger apparently was a visit by a member of Congress, Rep. Leo Ryan of California, who had flown to Guyana to investigate whether Jones' followers were being forced to remain there against their will. Ryan and NBC journalist Don Harris confronted Jones on camera about a Peoples Temple member who had pleaded for help in getting away. Later Both Ryan and Harris were ambushed and shot to death on an airport tarmac as they attempted to return to the U.S., along with two other journalists and a defector from Jones' group, according to this retrospective Rolling Stone account published around the 40th anniversary of the event.

In March, a Wharton professor who studies artificial intelligence and start-ups claimed on X, "The modern economy rests on a single road in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. The road runs to the two mines that are the sole supplier of the quartz required to make the crucibles needed to refine silicon wafers."

 

Ethan Mollick noted at the time, "There are no alternative sources known" if supply disruptions were seen in Spruce Pines.

 

Fast-forward to this past weekend across the Western North Carolina area, where a major disaster continues to unfold after tropical system Helene dumped torrential rains and unleashed devastating floods that pulverized entire towns, destroyed roads, highways, and bridges, and left tens of thousands without power.

Back to Mollick. He shared with his followers a detailed list of the top miners in Spruce Pine, highlighting Sibelco North America, known for producing ultra-high-purity quartz used in refined silicon wafers.

 

As of Monday morning, Mollick's worst fears could be realized as Google Traffic data shows road closures around the Sibelco mining facilities and across the entire region.

 

A 2018 note from Wired shows just how critical Spruce Pines area mines are for semiconductor production: "A fire in 2008 at one of the main quartz facilities in Spruce Pine for a time all but shut off the supply of high‑purity quartz to the world market, sending shivers through the industry."

 

Earlier this year, Tom's Hardware cited Mollick's X posts, saying the Wharton professor "provides an excerpt from Conway's Material World, which discusses the probable "end of computer chip manufacture as we know it," should something untoward happen at Spruce Pine or in the skies above it."

Jeffrey Weise killed his grandfather first.

 

He shot his grandfather, Daryl "Dash" Lussier, then Lussier's companion, Michelle Sigana, in the house they all shared on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

 

Weise took the guns Lussier used as a tribal police officer, a Glock pistol and a shotgun. He strapped on Lussier's police-issued Kevlar vest and set off for Red Lake High School in his grandfather's squad car. That is how Weise began his shooting spree on March 21, 2005.

 

The shooting at Red Lake:The victims

 

Weise walked in the front doors of the high school and started shooting. The first two rounds hit Derrick Brun, an unarmed security guard, in a hallway as he stepped forward to confront Weise.

 

Weise moved on to math teacher Missy Dodds' classroom, where he shot another teacher, Neva Rogers, and five students. In the midst of the killing, student Jeff May rushed Weise with a pencil, embedding the thing in Kevlar.

 

Today:Feeling scars at Red Lake 10 years later

 

Within minutes of Weise's first shots, a team of four tribal police and conservation officers rushed into the school and came down the hall in a tactical diamond formation and confronted Weise. Weise retreated back into Dodds' classroom, where he shot himself.

 

Including Weise, 10 people died. At the time it was the deadliest school shooting since the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo. It remains the largest mass homicide in Minnesota history.

 

The investigation

 

Within a few hours of the shooting, agents from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and FBI were poring over security tapes and Weise's belongings for evidence of co-conspirators.

 

Weise's computer revealed a stream of instant messages to other kids in Red Lake, kids he hoped to enlist in his school shooting.

 

"Most of these boys would go along with these chat messages for awhile," said now-retired FBI agent John Egelhof, "then you'd see them drop off."

 

Those boys were tracked down and brought in for questioning, their parents left to fear the worst. The move didn't go over well on the reservation. Anton Treuer, Bemidji State University American Indian Resource Center executive director, called the investigation a witch hunt.

 

"When there was a shooting at Sandy Hook or Columbine," he said, "they weren't shaking down everybody's third cousin."

 

Many boys knew of Weise's interest in school shootings and had seen the violent illustrations that filled his notebooks, but only one was charged.

 

Louis Jourdain, the son of then-tribal chairman Floyd "Buck" Jourdain, and one of Weise's few close friends was taken to court on conspiracy charges, a fact that Floyd Jourdain still resents.

 

"He was running for his life [that day] just like all the rest of the kids," he said.

 

Years later, Egelhof has no regrets about how the investigation was handled.

 

Louis Jourdain's records are sealed because he was a minor at the time of the shooting. It's not clear what came of the case against him. Floyd Jourdain said his son was cleared — that Weise was acting without help or warning, and died alongside his victims.

 

School shootings

 

Shortly after the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown, Conn., President Obama asked the FBI to use its national crime statistics to determine whether the number of such crimes was on the rise.

 

In September 2014, the FBI report chronicled shootings over a 13-year period in which people set out to kill others in populated areas. It was the first documentation of such cases.

 

From December 2000 to 2013, there were 160 "active shooter" incidents in the U.S., in which 1,043 people were wounded or killed. The average number of such cases per year went from six incidents in the first seven years to 16 cases, on average, in the last seven years.

 

The FBI incident list includes three Minnesota shootings: The Accent Signage shooting in 2012 that killed six and wounded two, the Rocori High School shooting in Cold Spring in September 2003 that killed two, and the Red Lake High School shooting in March 2005, when a total of 10 people were killed including a security guard, a teacher and five students. Two people were killed at a private home.

Ten years ago, on March 21, 2005, 16-year-old Jeff Wiese shot his grandfather, his grandfather's partner and seven of his classmates at Red Lake High School before shooting himself.
