Grok: Yes, Duke Energy did open floodgates in North Carolina in response to significant rainfall from Hurricane Helene. Specifically, they opened the floodgates at Cowans Ford Dam to manage water levels and alleviate pressure on lakes in the Catawba River System, moving water from Lake Norman to Lake Wylie through Mountain Island Lake. This action was part of an effort to mitigate potential flooding and dam stress due to the excessive rain.
Yes, when Duke Energy opened the floodgates in North Carolina, particularly in response to Hurricane Helene in late September 2024, it did contribute to flooding in certain areas. Here's what happened:
-
Floodgate Operations: Duke Energy opened the floodgates as a precautionary measure to manage water levels in the face of heavy rainfall from Hurricane Helene. This was done to prevent potential damage to the dams and infrastructure due to excessive water accumulation.
-
Flooding Effects: The opening of the floodgates, especially at the Cowans Ford Dam, led to significant downstream flooding. Areas around Mountain Island Lake and other parts of the Catawba River system experienced rapid rises in water levels, leading to flooding.
-
Evacuations and Warnings: There were mandatory and voluntary evacuation orders issued for residents near Mountain Island Lake due to the expected flooding. The water levels were projected to reach unprecedented heights, leading to concerns over safety and property damage.
-
Public and Expert Opinion: There was debate over whether Duke Energy's decision could have been handled differently to mitigate flooding. Some residents and experts questioned if reducing lake levels pre-emptively could have stored more of the incoming water, potentially reducing the flood's severity. Duke Energy, however, stated that the lakes were already at or below target levels, and releasing water was necessary to avoid catastrophic dam failures.
-
Duke Energy's Defense: Duke Energy argued that not releasing water could have led to severe water shortages if the storm had missed the area or if there was an extended dry period post-storm. They also pointed out that the sheer volume of rain from Helene would have made any additional storage capacity in the lakes insufficient to prevent all flooding.
In summary, while the opening of the floodgates by Duke Energy was part of a broader strategy to manage water flow and prevent dam failures during an intense storm event, it directly contributed to significant flooding in some areas of North Carolina. The decision was influenced by the need to balance immediate flood risk against potential future water supply issues, showcasing the complex challenges utilities face during such natural disasters.

🚨 Beware of FEMA’s $750 "Assistance" 🚨
FEMA offers $750 in quick disaster aid, but here's the catch: if you later get insurance for the same expenses, you must pay FEMA back. That "help" could come back to bite you. 💸

The reaction of the FEMA guy and Jill pointing at the sky in the background after Biden “slips up” and says they’ll be “increasing” the number and intensity of these weather events is actually the creepiest part of this moment.

ELECTION INTEGRITY: The single most vulnerable politician to overseas voting is Senator @tedcruz
. UOCAVA voting puts his seat very much in play. Between 2016 and 2020 Texas saw a 100% increase in overseas votes - a similar increase this year would cost Ted his seat.
What if I told you that anyone could go online and claim to be a citizen living overseas, get a ballot, and vote without ever having to prove their identity or citizenship? Sounds crazy, right? What if I told you federal law made it illegal for the state to attempt to verify your identity and citizenship? They don't even need to use their real name or even the name of a living person. Even crazier, right? Well that's exactly what the UOCAVA allows and requires.
The census estimates there are less than 3 million Americans living overseas, but the Democrats are telling donors to their Vote From Abroad Program that there are more than 9 million. So anyone with a computer can go to the FVAP website and fill out a few forms and be registered to vote and receive a ballot - you don't have to provide a real name or address and driver's license and last four of SSN are all optional (fun fact the state isn't allowed to confirm the last four of the SSN you provide matches the name or DoB you provided).
This is the case for all 50 states but I specifically confirmed this with the Texas Secretary of State. Of course, whoever fills out the registration and ballot will need to swear they are a citizen - but since we don't know the real name of the voter or anything about them there is little risk of getting caught.
The Democrats claim they are investing 'six figures' in getting out the overseas vote - a number that seems very low if they're interested in getting 9 million ballots. I can't help but wonder if that effort is cover to explain why they get so many overseas ballots in November.
For more information I shared the information in a thread: https://x.com/amuse/status/1842309773552988199
The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act facilitates voter fraud like nothing else. Using a VPN anyone can register from anywhere in the world and vote without providing ID or proof of citizenship. Between 2016 and 2020 Texas saw a 100% increase in overseas voting and the most vulnerable Senate race to UOCAVA in 2024 is Ted’s - a similar increase this year would cost him his seat and there is very little we can do to stop it now except vote - he needs every single possible vote.
