Science & Tech Spotlight:

Directed Energy Weapons

GAO-23-106717

Published: May 25, 2023. Publicly

Fast Facts

Directed energy weapons—such as lasers—use energy fired at the speed of light. These weapons can produce force that ranges from deterrent, to damaging, to destructive. Many countries, including the U.S., are researching their use.

Because they use energy instead of bullets or missiles, directed energy weapons could be less expensive per shot and have virtually unlimited firing power.

However, the long-term health effects of these weapons are unclear. They also generally have a shorter range than conventional weapons, and weather conditions—such as fog and storms—can make certain directed energy weapons less effective.

Highlights

Why This Matters

There is a surge in interest in directed energy weapons from several nations—including the U.S.—primarily for counter drone missions. These weapons use electromagnetic energy to cause effects ranging from deterrence to destruction. They offer capabilities that conventional weapons may not, but challenges have so far prevented widespread operational use.

The Technology

What is it? Directed energy weapons (DEW) use concentrated electromagnetic energy to combat enemy forces and assets. These weapons include high energy lasers and other high power electromagnetics—such as millimeter wave and high power microwave weapons. Unlike weapons that fire bullets or missiles, DEWs can respond to a threat in different ways. For example, they can temporarily degrade electronics on a drone or physically destroy it. See our 2022 Spotlight for more information on counter-drone technology.

How does it work? Each type of DEW uses a different region of the electromagnetic spectrum (see fig. 1). This spectrum describes all of the kinds of light—including those the human eye cannot see—and classifies them according to wavelength. Different types of electromagnetic energy have different properties. For example, the wavelength affects what the directed energy can penetrate—such as metal or human skin….

Chinese military scientists claim to have achieved a ‘huge breakthrough’ on laser weapon technology

High-energy laser weapons can now operate ‘infinitely’, thanks to a new cooling system that completely eliminates the build-up of waste heat

The technology could significantly change the face of battle by extending engagement times, and increasing range and damage, researchers say

5:00pm, 11 Aug2023:

Chinese military scientists have announced a major breakthrough in laser weapon technology, claiming they have developed a new cooling system that allows high-energy lasers to operate “infinitely” without any build-up of waste heat.

According to scientists at the National University of Defence Technology, in Changsha, Hunan province, the new cooling system completely eliminates the harmful heat that is generated during the operation of high-energy lasers. The issue has been a major technical challenge for laser weapon development.

With the new technology, weapons can now generate laser beams for as long as they want, without any interruption or degradation in performance.

China Claims Major Breakthrough on Laser Weapon Technology

Friday August 11, 2023 8:46 PM,

Hong Kong: Chinese military scientists have announced a major breakthrough in laser weapon technology, claiming they have developed a new cooling system that allows high-energy lasers to operate “infinitely” without any build-up of waste heat.

According to scientists at the National University of Defence Technology, in Changsha, Hunan province, the new cooling system completely eliminates the harmful heat generated by high-energy laser operation, reports South China Morning Post.

"Uninterrupted laser beams"

The new technology allows weapons to generate laser beams for as long as they want, without interruption or degradation.

“This is a huge breakthrough in improving the performance of high-energy laser systems,” said the team led by laser weapon scientist Yuan Shengfu in a paper published on August 4 in Acta Optica Sinica, a Chinese-language peer-reviewed journal.

“High-quality beams can be produced not only in the first second, but also maintained indefinitely,” they added.

The new cooling system removes heat from inside the laser weapon while minimising turbulence and vibration and improving mirror cleanliness through advanced structures and optimised gas flow, the report mentioned.

Russian ambassador to US returns home

Anatoly Antonov has left Washington, during a period of fractured ties between the two countries

Russia's former ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, has finished his term of office and has returned to Moscow, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday, amid unprecedented tensions between the two nuclear superpowers.

“The Russian ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, has ended his service in Washington and is on his way to Moscow,” the Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement carried by Russian news agencies. The ministry did not provide any additional details and has so far not named his successor.

Antonov previously told reporters that ithad become increasingly difficult for Russian diplomats to work in the US as bilateral relations were “falling apart.” He said earlier this week that he and hiscolleagues have been subjected to “threats of physical violence.”

The outspoken envoy was appointed to his position in August 2017 when relations between the countries were already deteriorating due to allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election. Moscow has denied these claims and accused politicians in Washington of fear-mongering and deliberate attempts to slander Russia.

Relations went downhill after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict broke in February 2022, with some observers worrying that the tensions could escalate into a full-blown war.

The US and Russia have repeatedly expelled each other’s diplomats in recent years. In 2017, the US ordered the shutdown of the Russian Consulate in San Francisco, as well as the properties of Russia’s trade mission in Washington and New York. Moscow has responded by demanding the closure of the American Consulate in St. Petersburg. In 2020, the US suspended the work of two of its remaining consulates in Russia.

Transgender football team beaten 19-0 in debut game

Spanish club Fenix FC has become the first all-trans squad to join a soccer federation in Europe

A football team consisting entirely of transgender men has begun playing in a regional league in Spain, Reuters has reported.

The squad, called Fenix FC,has officially competed in the men’s fifth division in the Spanish regionof Catalonia after being incorporated into a local club in the Barcelona suburb of Sant Feliu de Llobregat, the agency said in an article on Saturday. (So if the play against men, they will lose every time.Trump nailed it.)

This makes the Catalan side the first ever all-trans team to join a football federation in Europe, it added.

Fenix FC – named after the mythical phoenix –played its first game in the league on September 21 and lost 19-0.

The founder of Fenix FC, Hugo Martinez, told Reuters that he decided to set up an all-trans squad after being asked to leave the women’s team after he began transitioning to a man through hormone therapy.

The team’s captain, Luke Ibanez, said he joined the club because hefeared that he would not be accepted and could even suffer violence on a men’s team.(that says it all, they can't get in a fight with men.)

"Fenix is a team of trans boys created entirely by trans boys, but I think it’s more than that – a family, a safe space where you can be free and express yourself however you want and how you really feel,” Ibanez added.

In late 2022, Spain passed legislation that allows citizens to change their legal gender without the need for psychological or other medical evaluation.

The Catalan Football Federation told Reuters that its men’s leagues have been mixed for the past two seasons, with people of any gender able to take part. The players can also compete under a name that differs from their legal name, it added.

(Trans can only win if they can punch, wrestle, weight lift or play football with girls. The only way they win is play against In order other trans teams, they will never win against men, not enough testosterone.)
