Why This Matters

There is a surge in interest in directed energy weapons from several nations—including the U.S.—primarily for counter drone missions. These weapons use electromagnetic energy to cause effects ranging from deterrence to destruction. They offer capabilities that conventional weapons may not, but challenges have so far prevented widespread operational use.

The Technology

What is it? Directed energy weapons (DEW) use concentrated electromagnetic energy to combat enemy forces and assets. Nuclear weapons could save Earth – study

Chinese researchers have urged governments to build a warhead-based planetary defense system to protect against asteroids

Nuclear weapons may be the best means of protecting the Earth from asteroids, according to scientists from China’s deep space exploration program.

In a paper published this month in the Chinese journal SCIENTIA SINICA Technologica, the team of researchers warned that despite recent developments in near-Earth object detection technologies, inaccuracies can occur, which means humanity needs to be prepared to fend off space debris.

In their study, the researchers analyzed a variety of defense methods and their feasibility in protecting the planet from asteroids of different sizes, densities, and warning periods. Their findings suggest that on short notice – for example, one week until impact – nuclear warheads would be the only thing capable of altering an asteroid’s course to avoid a collision.

Based on their analysis, the team suggested that the best solution to counter potential threats posed by asteroids would be to develop a global nuclear-based defense system.

The system should include swift-launchers able to send nuclear warheads from the ground into space from seven days to one month. It should also be equipped with rockets with precise strike ability – a margin of error of less than 100 meters (328 feet). Furthermore, the system should allow for orbital pre-deployment of nuclear warheads for long-term standby of more than ten years.

The researchers said they were aware that their idea is challenging for a number of reasons. Firstly, no nation currently has the ability to launch nuclear warheads into deep space, which means that new launch vehicles would have to be developed. Secondly, China, along with most other nuclear states on the planet, is part of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty and the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which prohibit signatories from stationing weapons of mass destruction in space. Thirdly, nuclear explosions cause radioactive pollution even in space, which poses a threat of secondary harm to Earth and other celestial bodies in its proximity.

The scientists concluded that while a nuclear explosion “has amazing performance for self-defense,”it would be wise to explore other technologies capable of fending off asteroids, such as high-power laser weapons.They stressed, however, that the asteroid threat should not be taken for granted, as “the potential risk of asteroid impacts is much higher than the assessment based on currently discovered asteroid data.”

Sir Keir Starmer has been forced to accept the resignation of his chief of staff Sue Gray in the latest attempt by the prime minister to regain control of the political agenda.

After less than three months in office since the election, the loss of Ms Gray who he personally recruited to ensure he could drive through his policies through Whithall once in power, is a major blow for Sir Keir.

But it follows weeks of infighting almost from the moment Labour won an historic election result coupled with questions over gifts for the prime minister, Ms Gray and senior cabinet ministers and fears that the government has lost control of its own agenda.

Already, Starmer has been forced to try to rset the agenda three times with announcements over restricting gifts in the future and paying back some of them. Now he is being forced to reset his top team.

Ms Gray will take up a new role in government after admitting that she had become a distraction for the government not least over revelations that she had insisted on a £170,000-salary, more than the prime minister gets..

It is a similar position that Tony Blair’s director of communications Alastair Campbell found himself in the wake of the Iraq War as well as David Cameron’s director of communications Andrew Coulson during the phone hacking scandal.

The outgoing chief of staff said her decision to step down came as a result of “intense commentary” around her position, admitting it risked becoming a “distraction to the government’s vital work of change”.

“Throughout my career my first interest has always been public service”, Ms Gray added.

For many it had become obvious at a miserable Labour Party conference in Liverpool that Ms Gray’s position was becoming increasingly untenable.

Cabinet ministers had tried to rally in support for her with those in favour describing Ms Gray as “absolutely brilliant” and “the engine of so much that is good”. They were “horrified” that she “has been subjected to these poisonous briefings against her”.

Mr McSweeney will take over as Sir Keir’s chief of staff, Downing Street confirmed today, as part of a wider attempt by the prime minister to bolster his operation in No 10.

In a statement, the prime minister thanked Ms Gray for her work to “prepare us for government and get us started on our programme of change.”

She has been appointed as the prime minister’s envoy for nations and regions, an advisory role to help the government “develop and maintain strong relations between central government and other devolved authorities”.

In a statement, she said: “After leading the Labour party’s preparation for government and kickstarting work on our programme for change, I am looking forward to drawing on my experience to support the Prime Minister and the Cabinet to help deliver the government’s objectives across the nations and regions of the UK.”

She said it had been an honour to “play my part in the delivery of a Labour government” in her role as chief as staff.

The Conservative Party said the changes are evidence that Sir Keir’s government has been “thrown into chaos” in fewer than 100 days, adding: “He has lost his Chief of Staff who has been at the centre of the scandal the Labour Party has been engulfed by.

“Sue Gray was brought into deliver a programme for government and all we’ve seen in that time is a government of self-service. The only question that remains is who will run the country now?”

What I am hearing at this moment is that North Carolina State Police will start arresting Federal employees who are objective & obstructive to aide coming from outside sources and domestic residents within the affected areas.

And for those who may question how are thru able to do this. Well it is called State Sovereignty. Something that is preserved under Common Law. All you have to do is read the 10th Amendment. Which clearly have outlines & bylines as to how assistance is rendered to disaster zones. FEMA is supposed to operate in accordance with the state. According to scientists at the National University of Defence Technology, in Changsha, Hunan province, the new cooling system completely eliminates the harmful heat that is generated during the operation of high-energy lasers. The issue has been a major technical challenge for laser weapon development.

With the new technology, weapons can now generate laser beams for as long as they want, without any interruption or degradation in performance.

Hong Kong: Chinese military scientists have announced a major breakthrough in laser weapon technology, claiming they have developed a new cooling system that allows high-energy lasers to operate “infinitely” without any build-up of waste heat.

According to scientists at the National University of Defence Technology, in Changsha, Hunan province, the new cooling system completely eliminates the harmful heat generated by high-energy laser operation, reports South China Morning Post.

"Uninterrupted laser beams"

The new technology allows weapons to generate laser beams for as long as they want, without interruption or degradation.

“This is a huge breakthrough in improving the performance of high-energy laser systems,” said the team led by laser weapon scientist Yuan Shengfu in a paper published on August 4 in Acta Optica Sinica, a Chinese-language peer-reviewed journal.

“High-quality beams can be produced not only in the first second, but also maintained indefinitely,” they added.

The new cooling system removes heat from inside the laser weapon while minimising turbulence and vibration and improving mirror cleanliness through advanced structures and optimised gas flow, the report mentioned.
