Grimace is a character featured in McDonaldland commercials. He is Ronald McDonald’s best friend.
Grimace is a large, purple, rotund being of

with short arms and legs.
He was known for his slow witted yet optimistic demeanor.
Grimace sometimes went for long periods of time without speaking;
when he does speak he is known for saying "duh" before every sentence.
Grimace originally debuted as a large purple being with four arms and two legs who loved milkshakes and sodas. After that first campaign, Grimace is reintroduced in his modern form, with his number of arms reduced by two.
The modern commercials are really cool and merchandise generally portray him as a well-meaning simpleton, whose clumsy antics provide a comic foil to Ronald McDonald.
The character is retained after the streamlining of the characters in the 1980s and was one of the few members to also be retained until the end of the McDonaldland commercials.
Grimace in the early days was used to advertise the happy meal.
Following an appearance at Dodger Stadium on July 18th, 2012, vs. the Philadelphia Phillies, dancing to Ram Jam's "Black Betty" (1977), Grimace seemingly disappeared.
For a number of years Grimace vanished from public life, appearing only in Malaysian Happy Meal toys. His first public appearance after his 2012 disappearance was at the 2020 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade alongside Ronald McDonald. Grimace also appeared in a parody cryptocurrency tweet on Twitter by McDonald's known as "Grimace-Coin", and in a 2022 Super Bowl Commercial.
On June 6th, 2023, Grimace took over the McDonalds Twitter[1], Facebook[2], Instagram[3] and TikTok [4]accounts to announce a birthday celebration beginning on June 12th. The birthday celebration includes limited-edition Grimace inspired purple shake and merch, a browser game[5] and a charity campaign for the Ronald McDonald house.[6]

KEK THEY HAVE NO IDEA
The new emergency alert system that lets Trump text you, explained
Experts say it’s probably fine.
by Emily Stewart
Updated Oct 3, 2018
https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/10/3/17931894/emergency-alert-test-presidential-text
You probably got an emergency alert from President Donald Trump on your phone on Wednesday afternoon. It’s a test of a new alert system that’s supposed to be used in very specific circumstances to communicate with the public via cell phones — and experts say it won’t let presidents just text the American public at will.
At 2:18 pm Eastern Time Wednesday, FEMA and the FCC did their first test of the Wireless Emergency Alerts system. More than 100 mobile carriers, including all major wireless companies, are participating. A second test that put messages on TV and radio, known as the Emergency Alert System, took place a couple of minutes later.
The wireless test message read “Presidential Alert” and included a clear warning that it was just a test, per FEMA: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” It was transmitted in both English and Spanish. Cell towers broadcast the test for about half an hour, during which time most cell phones that were switched on and within range of an active cell tower got the test message.
The TV and radio system has been tested three times before; the texting system hasn’t. The test was initially scheduled for September but was postponed because of Hurricane Florence.
The system is the same one that’s used to warn the public about dangerous weather or missing children, such as tornado warnings and Amber Alerts. Users can’t opt out of texts, a requirement from a 2006 law passed by Congress called the Warning, Alert, and Response Network Act. Congress requires the system be tested every three years.
The idea of Trump having control over a nationwide wireless alert system may seem unsettling or annoying, given that most Americans think the president tweets way too much. But the national warning system predates Trump and has been under development for years, and officials say there are some pretty specific guardrails in place to make sure it’s always used correctly.
“You would not have a situation where any sitting president would just wake up one morning and attempt to send a person a message,” FEMA official Antwane Johnson said on a call with reporters this week, according to Axios. “The system is very well-governed and rooted in law in terms of its intended use.”
This is (probably) fine
Given the president’s erratic tweeting habits and penchant for reacting to emergency situations without having all the facts, the idea of Trump having the ability to send alerts to the entire country could be, for some, a bit disconcerting. But the system is intended to be used for actual emergencies only — not a reaction to a Fox News segment or a declaration that the Russia investigation is a witch hunt.
According to the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System Modernization Act of 2015, the system “shall not be used to transmit a message that does not relate to a natural disaster, act of terrorism, or other man-made disaster or threat to public safety.”
“One thing that we need make very clear is that there are laws, policies, and procedures that are in place, other protocols to assure that the system is used in accordance with its intended use as defined by the law,” Johnson, from FEMA, told CBS This Morning.

Irwin Redlener, director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University, told me recently that the wireless alert system is a good idea, as is testing it — but having someone as volatile as Trump with control over it is concerning.
“I’m not sure that the system would protect us from rogue announcements by a president who has exhibited the kind of behavior President Trump has over the last two years,” Redlener said. “I personally would not give this microphone to Donald Trump.”
Former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told CBS that the system “should not be used for a political agenda.”
“If it wasn’t for the style, personality, and behavior of Donald Trump, I don’t think this question would have ever come up,” Redlener said. “Of course the president would have access [to the emergency alert system] in the situation of a national emergency.”
Emergency alert systems aren’t infallible. A false alert about an impending missile threat to Hawaii caused widespread panic in January. But the concern is more about Trump’s personality than it is the accidental push of a button.
“We need to accept the fact that any of these systems can fail; miscommunications can go out when the wrong button’s being pushed. That’s a given for any system of this type,” Redlener said. “What I’m more concerned about is the president of the United States taking control over such a system intentionally to create havoc, to make some sort of highly disruptive, highly political announcement.”
Hopefully, that won’t happen.

By Ryan J. Reilly
WASHINGTON — A Jan. 6 defendant who federal prosecutors said sought to "incite violence," "instigate s—" and "foment anarchy" during the attack on the Capitol was sentenced Friday afternoon to six years in prison.
John Sullivan was convicted in November on numerous charges, including felony obstruction of an official proceeding and civil disorder. During closing arguments, a federal prosecutor told jurors that Sullivan went to the Capitol with the "goal of inciting the crowd," and prosecutors presented evidence of him bragging about being "on the front line" during the attack.
"I brought my megaphone to instigate s-," Sullivan said in footage played for jurors, in which he bragged that he'd sought to "make those Trump supporters f- s— up."
A tearful Sullivan said he was "very sorry" and that he had "learned my lesson" before his sentence was handed down on Friday.
Prosecutors had argued for a lengthy sentence of more than seven years in federal prison, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebekah Lederer saying Sullivan "came to Washington looking for a fight" and had become a "poster child of conspiracy theories on the deep far-right."
Judge Royce C. Lamberth, a Ronald Reagan appointee who has spoken out about the seriousness of the Jan. 6 attack and ordered Sullivan locked up following his conviction last year, noted that this case was "unusual." While most Jan. 6 defendants "wrongly but sincerely believed the election was stolen," Sullivan had different political beliefs, the judge said, describing him as perhaps the only Jan. 6 defendant "who showed up to the Capitol despite not subscribing to the goals of the protest."
Sullivan, also known as "Jayden X," had been a cause célèbre for conservatives seeking to shift attention away from what drove the actions of the overwhelmingly pro-Donald Trump mob that stormed the Capitol and brutally attacked officers on Jan. 6, 2021. Sullivan is a political outlier among Jan. 6 defendants, many of whom still believe in the lies about the 2020 election that drove the attack. Sullivan is not a Trump supporter; prosecutors described him as an “antiestablishment” activist who wanted to “burn it all down.”

He also held himself out as a supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, but BLM activists had distanced themselves from Sullivan in 2020. His brother James Sullivan is a right-wing activist with ties to the Proud Boys.
In court Friday, Lederer quoted a Black Lives Matter activist from Salt Lake City who said Sullivan "exploited Black people, profited off of our pain and hurt the movement.”
Sullivan captured some of the better-known footage of the death of Ashli Babbitt, who was fatally shot after she jumped through a broken window leading into the House Speaker's Lobby. Babbitt's mother — Micki Witthoeft, a regular presence at the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C. — was in court for Sullivan's sentencing hearing on Friday.
Sullivan argued after the riot that he was there filming as a journalist, but prosecutors showed evidence during the trial that he believed that filming was simply a "good ploy so I don’t get arrested" and argued in a sentencing memo that "the real purpose of his presence at the Capitol" was "to foment anarchy."
NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News, is one of the media outlets that paid to license Sullivan’s footage in the aftermath of the attack. Federal prosecutors previously seized the $90,875 in funds that Sullivan received from various media outlets and asked the judge to impose a fine of $90,875, saying he "should not be able to ‘capitalize’ on his participation in the Capitol breach and should be fined the entire amount of his proceeds." Lamberth indicated during the sentencing hearing that Sullivan would not be getting the money back.
Sullivan told documentary filmmaker Jade Sacker, who also entered the Capitol on Jan. 6, that he was "siding with anyone willing to rip this down and put something new in place, put something better in place," prosecutors said. When he began efforts to license the footage, Sullivan shifted how he described himself, prosecutors said.
"As his campaign to sell footage to news outlets evolved, Sullivan suddenly began relabeling himself as a journalist—even changing the caption of his website from 'activist' to 'journalist,'" prosecutors wrote. "The reason for Sullivan’s reinvention is clear: he went all in on the 'good ploy' he had hatched with Sacker earlier that day in order to bury the real purpose of his presence at the Capitol—to foment anarchy."
Sullivan was also armed with "a retractable knife with an almost four inch blade" that "during two of the most serious inflection points of January 6, 2021 … he offered up to rioters at the House Main Door and the Speaker’s Lobby Door," prosecutors said.
Sullivan's defense team said that the former Eagle Scout had a "passion for in-line ice skating" and speed skating, but his Olympic prospects were derailed by injury. They said Sullivan "had led an admirable and a caring life in which he displayed a sense of responsibility, a commitment to his family, friends and community and an individual who tried to enhance the lives of those around him," and urged the judge to "consider the whole man."
Since Sullivan was locked up after his conviction, his lawyer said there's been a "dramatic decrease in his mental stability and his overall physical presence." Sullivan has been segregated from other Jan. 6 defendants in the Washington, D.C., jail because authorities believed that being locked up with Trump-supporting Jan. 6 defendants would be "a threat to his physical safety."
During Friday's hearing, Sullivan said that he has been "completely isolated" under "very terrible conditions" since he was convicted.
More than 1,387 Capitol attack defendants have been charged, and prosecutors have secured nearly 1,000 convictions. While hundreds of low-level rioters have received probationary sentences, more than 520 have been sentenced to periods of incarceration ranging from a few days behind bars to 22 years in federal prison. The median term for Jan. 6 rioters sentenced to prison is about eight months, according to an analysis by NBC News.
There are about 15 defendants in pretrial custody, meaning they haven’t been convicted of a crime, but a judge determined they are either a threat to the community or a risk of flight.

Utah man who recorded fatal Jan. 6 Capitol shooting sentenced to 6 years
John Earle Sullivan sought to incite violence and stop Congress’s 2020 election certification, though he claimed to support Black Lives Matter

A Utah man who recorded himself inciting violence and breaking a window before filming the fatal shooting of Ashli Babbitt outside the House chamber during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack was sentenced Friday to six years in prison.
John Earle Sullivan, 29, was paid $90,875 for his videos before he was convicted at trial. A jury found him guilty in November of rioting and obstructing Congress’s certification of the 2020 election results, both felonies, and of five misdemeanor counts.
Prosecutors said Sullivan was a self-described activist with anarchist views who brought a tactical vest, a gas mask, a megaphone and a knife to the riot. Seeking a prison term of a little more than seven years, Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rebekah Lederer and Michael Barclay said Sullivan “shared a desire to see the government burn” and the vote certification stopped.
Defense attorney Steven Kiersh said Sullivan was born in Virginia, was adopted by a now-retired Army lieutenant colonel and his wife, and moved with them to Utah, where he trained to be an Olympic speed skater before injuries stopped him. Kiersh cited more than a dozen letters from friends and family members who described Sullivan as “much different” than what the jury saw. The attorney wrote that Sullivan “led an admirable and a caring life in which he displayed a sense of responsibility, a commitment to his family, friends and community and an individual who tried to enhance the lives of those around him.”
Since his conviction, Sullivan has been held in protective custody in virtual isolation at the D.C. jail, where authorities deemed that he held opposing political views and that housing him with other Jan. 6 defendants would be a “threat to his physical safety,” his lawyer said. Kiersh asked U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth for a 30-month sentence.
Kiersh said Sullivan will appeal his conviction and sentencing.
Because Sullivan expressed past support for the Black Lives Matter movement, conservatives such as Rudy Giuliani have claimed that he was a left-wing agitator in the mob, as they have sought to direct attention away from what motivated the overwhelmingly pro-Trump crowd. More than 1,350 people have been charged, including nearly 500 accused of attacking police, 130 of whom were armed or caused injury.
Sullivan’s interests were mixed, said prosecutors, who called him an agent of anti-establishment chaos who shared the goal of attacking Congress and the presidential transition. Using personas including “JaydenX” and Insurgence U.S.A., Sullivan built a social media following of nearly 500,000 by posting protest-related content after the 2020 police killing of George Floyd.
After he organized a July 2020 protest in Provo, Utah, that led to a motorist being shot, he was targeted by conservatives who believed he was a Black Lives Matter activist, he said. Black Lives Matter activists in Utah said Sullivan was not part of their group and urged protesters to avoid him as a troublemaker and riot chaser.
In the winter of 2020, the government said Sullivan wrote in one social media post: “Let the electoral purge commence.” In another post on Jan. 2, 2021, he wrote: “Time To Burn It All Down.” At the Capitol he was recorded saying, “We’re taking this s- to the ground” and “Let’s f- this s— up.”
Sullivan grew up in Stafford, Va., about 45 miles from Washington. His brother James is a conservative activist who has denounced John’s liberal politics. The split between the brothers was the subject of an unaired documentary called “A House Divided” by Jade Sacker, who recorded both men in Washington. Some of Sacker’s video was shown at trial.

Woman in video at Capitol with arrested activist is not with CNN

CLAIM: A video shows a CNN reporter disguised herself as a Trump supporter and conspired with a Black Lives Matter activist to incite a riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6.
AP’S ASSESSMENT:
False. The woman in the video does not work for CNN. She is a filmmaker who said she was at the Capitol filming a documentary.
THE FACTS: Social media users are sharing a video shot during the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6 by Utah activist John Sullivan, who was arrested Thursday, with false claims about what the video shows.
Sullivan, 26, was arrested in connection with being inside the Capitol on Jan. 6 and was charged with civil disorder, violent entry or disorderly conduct and entering a restricted building or grounds. Before his arrest, Sullivan had shared footage he captured of the moment when Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt of San Diego was fatally shot that day by Capitol Police.
Both Sullivan and Jade Sacker, an independent filmmaker who is following Sullivan for a documentary she is making, were later interviewed by Anderson Cooper on CNN about what they saw in the Capitol.
A different video Sullivan shot at the Capitol on Jan. 6 is now coming under scrutiny on social media.
In that footage, Sacker appears inside the Capitol rotunda in a baseball cap, mask and black jacket, and gives Sullivan a hug. She can be heard laughing and saying, “We did it!” and “You were right.” Sullivan says, “Is this not going to be the best film in your life?” Sacker asks if Sullivan is filming and he says he will delete it.
Social media users are sharing the clip, which has been viewed more than 2 million times, with the false narrative that it shows a CNN reporter conspiring with a BLM activist.
“BREAKING: CNN’s Jade Sacker penetrating the Capitol with a member of BLM/Antifa cheering, ‘We did it!’ And then asking her conspirator if he was filming, he said he’d delete it, he lied. CNN was in on it,” reads a tweet that was retweeted more than 43,000 times since it was posted Thursday night.
Another widely shared tweet reads: “WATCH: @CNN’s Jade Sacker caught on film coordinating with BLM activist, John Sullivan, to lure Trump supporters into the Capitol Building and then celebrating after they successfully sieged the Capitol.”
But Sacker does not work for CNN. “I am not a CNN journalist,” Sacker wrote Friday in an email to AP, adding that she is not “currently affiliated with any news organization.”
Some other posts called her an “NBC/NPR affiliated reporter.” But while Sacker said she has freelanced for CNBC and NPR in the past, she was not working for either on Jan. 6.
“I was in the Capitol following John Sullivan as part of a documentary I have been producing for the past four months, which follows both him and his brother James,” Sullivan wrote in the email. “The film intends to portray the emotional interior of the family’s story as they become divided” by the brothers’ “opposing political activism.”
Sacker told the AP the video was shot early in the insurrection, “before crowds closed in” and Babbitt was shot, which she said she did not witness. She said when she gave Sullivan a hug, she had been separated from him throughout the day and had been relieved to see him.
“My statements after this are not ones of conspiratorial success, but rather that I was shocked we were on the frontlines of covering this historic and very surreal event. At the time, I hadn’t seen John’s footage or heard many of the things he was saying,” Sacker said.

Sacker told the AP she had asked Sullivan not to record because “I am incredibly private.”
Other videos Sullivan recorded on Jan. 6 show him seeming to encourage and congratulate Trump supporters as they pass through police barriers and climb a wall to enter the Capitol. In others, he is heard telling police to stand down to not get hurt, according to an FBI affidavit.
Matt Dornic, a spokesperson for CNN, responded to some of the false tweets directly to debunk the claim that Sacker works for CNN.
“We booked a number of eye witnesses after last week’s attack on the Capitol,” Dornic told The Associated Press. “Jade Sacker absolutely does not work for CNN.” He also confirmed she “was not at the Capitol on our behalf.”
Ben Fishel, a spokesperson for NPR, told AP, “NPR retained Jade Sacker in October of 2020 for a freelance photography assignment. She has not performed any services for NPR since. She was not at the Capitol at our request or on our behalf. If we determine that her actions in any way contributed to the incident at the Capitol, Ms. Sackler will not be engaged by NPR again.”
Sullivan, who has said on social media he does not support Trump, has been accused by Trump supporters of infiltrating the mob and instigating the riot at the Capitol on behalf of antifa or BLM.
Before he was arrested on Thursday, Sullivan had said on social media that he is not with antifa. He also told the AP in an email on Tuesday, “I am not linked to the BLM Organization.”
He said he is affiliated with Insurgence USA, an organization he started last May. The group’s website says it was founded to oppose police brutality.
Shalomyah Bowers, a spokesperson for BLM, also denied Sullivan’s organization has any affiliation with BLM.
“We’ve never heard of Insurgence USA,” Bowers wrote in an email to the AP. “It is not part of our official BLM apparatus and John has never been a leader of Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation & Black Lives Matter Grassroots. We’ve never had contact with him.”
