23andMe Reportedly Faces Bankruptcy — What Will Happen to Everyone’s DNA Samples?

Since it was founded nearly two decades ago, 23andMe has grown into one of the largest biotechnology companies in the world. Millions of people have used its simple genetic testing service, which involves ordering a saliva test, spitting into a tube, and sending it back to the company for a detailed DNA analysis.

But now the company is on the brink of bankruptcy. This has raised concerns about what will happen to the troves of genetic data it has in its possession.

The company’s chief executive, Anne Wojcicki, has said she is committed to customer privacy and will “maintain our current privacy policy”.

But what can customers of 23andMe themselves do to make sure their highly personal genetic data is protected? And should we be concerned about other companies that also collect our DNA?

What happened to 23andMe?

23andMe has had a rapid downfall after the 2021 high of its public listing.

Its value has dropped more than 97%. In 2023 it suffered a major data breach affecting almost seven million users, and settled a class action lawsuit for US$30 million.

Last month its seven independent directors resigned amid news the original founder is planning to take the company private once more. The company has never made a profit and is reportedly on the verge of bankruptcy.

What this might mean for its vast stores of genetic data is unclear.

When people sign up for a 23andMe test the company assures them: “your privacy comes first”. It promises it will never share people’s DNA data with employers, insurance companies or public databases without consent. It puts choice in the hands of consumers about whether their spit sample is kept by the company, and whether their de-identified genetic and other data is used in research. Four in five people who bought a 23andMe test have agreed to their data being used in research.

However, if you dig a bit deeper, it’s clear that 23andMe uses people’s data in many different ways, such as sharing it with service providers. Perhaps most importantly, if the company goes bankrupt or is sold, people’s information might be “accessed, sold or transferred” as well.

In a statement to The Conversation, a 23andMe spokesperson said Wojcicki is “not open to considering third-party takeover proposals”, and that in the event of any future ownership change, the company’s existing data privacy agreements with customers “would remain in place unless and until customers are presented with, and agree to, new terms and statements – and only after receiving appropriate notice of any new terms, under applicable data protection laws”.

Tips for people to protect their genetic data

With 23andMe in the spotlight, people might want to take steps to protect their genetic data (although experts say there’s not really any more risk now than there has always been).

The simplest thing is to delete your account, which opts you out of any future research and discards your saliva sample. But if your data has already been de-identified and used in research, it can’t be retrieved. And even if you delete your account, 23andMe says it will keep hold of information including your genetic data, date of birth and sex, to comply with its own legal obligations.

Buying a DNA test online might feel fun and rewarding and it’s certainly been marketed that way. There are plenty of good news stories about how getting those test results has helped people to connect with lost family or understand more about their health risks. People just need to buy tests with their eyes open about what this might mean.

First, the results might not be all positive. Finding out about health risks without guidance from a health professional can be scary. Learning that the person you thought was your mum or dad actually isn’t, is an outcome for as many as 1 in 20 people who’ve bought a DNA test online.

Second, every company selling DNA tests does so with lots of legal conditions attached. People click through these without a second thought but researchers have shown it is worth taking a closer look. Consider what the company says about what it will do with your data and your sample, how long they will keep it, who else can access it, and how easy it will be to delete later.

There are guidelines from organisations like Australian Genomics that can help. And bear in mind that if a company holding your DNA profile is sold, it might be hard to make sure that data is protected.

CBS has come under fire after facing a formal complaint filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), alleging misleading edits during Vice President Kamala Harris’s 60 Minutes interview. The network has been accused of editing Harris’s responses to misrepresent her stance on issues related to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Maria Bartiromo, host of Fox Business, tackled the controversy with FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr, who explained the gravity of the situation. “My SEC colleague, Republican Commissioner Simington, has been very active on this,” Carr said. “What he’s pointed out is the news distortion rule is a very, very narrow rule at the FCC. In almost every case, it doesn’t apply because it could get into sort of editorial decisions that are protected by the First Amendment. But what he said is that CBS should release the transcript.”

“The reason why this complaint is not frivolous is because the rules say, for instance, the example we’ve given is, if you take an answer to a question that is a yes, and you replace the answer of no from a different question, that that’s something that would potentially fall within the news distortion rule,” Carr said.

He continued, “I don’t think this needs to be a federal case, because I think CBS should release it [transcript], and then that would inoculate entirely CBS from that FCC complaint.” He went on to add, “In fact, I know people are reaching out to their local affiliates right now, asking them if they would release that transcript.”

The complaint, filed by the conservative watchdog group Center for American Rights, accuses CBS of editing Vice President Harris’s interview on 60 Minutes in a way that misrepresented her remarks on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. In the original clip, Harris was seen struggling with her response to questions about the conflict. This portion of the interview was notably absent from the final broadcast.

The interview conducted by CBS correspondent Bill Whitaker was supposed to showcase Harris’ foreign policy acumen, a crucial aspect as she navigates the 2024 presidential campaign. Whitaker asked, “But it seems that Prime Minister Netanyahu is not listening.”

In response, Harris said, “Well Bill, the work that we have done has resulted in a number of movements in that region by Israel that were very much prompted by or a result of many things, including our advocacy for what needs to happen in the region… We are not going to stop pursuing what is necessary for the United States to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end.”

Harris’s answer, which some labeled as incoherent, was met with a wave of backlash on social media, with many accusing the vice president of dodging the question and failing to offer any substantial insight into the administration’s plans for resolving the conflict. However, the aired version of the interview saw this entire portion removed, replaced by a much shorter and more polished response from Harris. The Center for American Rights (CAR) claimed that the discrepancies “amount to deliberate news distortion — a violation of FCC rules governing broadcasters’ public interest obligations.”

“This isn’t just about one interview or one network,” said CAR president Daniel Suhr. “This is about the public’s trust in the media on critical issues of national security and international relations during one of the most consequential elections of our time,” Suhr continued. “When broadcasters manipulate interviews and distort reality, it undermines democracy itself. The FCC must act swiftly to restore public confidence in our news media.”

“The need for the Commission’s action is strengthened by CBS’s refusal thus far to release the transcript, which it has done in similar interviews in the past,” the complaint noted. FCC complaints of this nature are rare, but they have the potential to result in fines or other penalties if the commission finds evidence of unethical broadcasting practices.

In his introduction to “A Pathway to American Renewal,” a new collection of essays by scholars and grassroots activists on how to revitalize low-income communities, the volume’s editor, Robert Woodson Sr., describes himself as “a practitioner—a radical pragmatist—who has spent the last fifty years of my life walking among, and learning from, some of the most resilient people you can imagine.”

Given that Mr. Woodson has been coordinating development programs in poor black neighborhoods since the 1960s, I was curious to get his take on why Kamala Harris hasn’t matched the level of support among blacks that other Democratic presidential candidates have received. CBS News reports that in 2020, Joe Biden beat Donald Trump among black voters 90% to 9%, and this year polls have Ms. Harris at a 78% to 15% advantage. In the seven most competitive states about 1 in 4 black men say they “definitely” or “probably” will vote for Mr. Trump, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Mr. Woodson mused that the track record ofDemocrats might finally be catching up with them. “Democrats have been running these big cities for 60 years, and black people see the results==,” he said.

Nor does he believe the problem is unique to Ms. Harris. If Mr. Biden hadn’t dropped out of the race, “he’d be having similar problems with black voters, because they remember the unemployment and low inflation” under Mr. Trump.

The data suggest that Mr. Woodson is on to something. Before the global pandemic shut down the economy in 2020, inflation-adjusted weekly earnings under Mr. Trump grew 12.5% for all black workers and 12.7% for black men, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The corresponding figures for white workers—7.9% and 8.2%—demonstrate that, before Covid, black workers were making absolute gains and gaining on their white counterparts. Under the Biden-Harris administration, inflation-adjusted earnings to date are up less than 1% among blacks and down 1.5% among whites.

When I asked Mr. Woodson about Ms. Harris’s new black outreach efforts, which include providing forgivable loans to black entrepreneurs and “creating opportunities for Black Americans to succeed” at dealing marijuana in their communities,he doubted such initiatives would make much difference.

“Whenever they try to target a group, whether it’s blacks or women, they propose things that help the more advantaged members of those groups. Only a tiny percentage of blacks are entrepreneurs.”

Government subsidies for the cannabis industry, he said, are a priority for black elites, who tend not to live in drug-infested neighborhoods with high violent-crime rates.

Ms. Harris’s problem with black voters, Mr. Woodson explained, is part of a broader problem the Democratic Party faces with working-class voters generally.“The black men I talk to are upset at the migrants in places like Chicago and Boston and California getting free cellphones and housing,” he said. Yet Ms. Harris has been banging away at Mr. Trump’s comportment, his criminal convictions and Jan. 6. Even her focus on abortion rights plays better with college-educated women than with their blue-collar counterparts, who are more concerned about inflation, illegal immigration and crime…

Hillary Clinton didn’t get them in 2016, which is one reason she lost.

Ironically, part of Ms. Harris’s problem may be the man going to bat for her. Mr. Obama’s two presidential terms are a not-so-distant memory and demonstrated, among other things, that addressing the challenges that many black Americans still face requires more than simply putting a black person in the Oval Office and hoping for the best.Black Americans, like Americans in general, fared better economically under Mr. Trump than they did under Mr. Obama. There’s no guarantee that Mr. Trump will repeat that performance in a second term, but it’s hard to quibble with the growing number of black voters who want to see him try.

The first Boeing EMD T-7A Redhawk (21-7001, known as APT-001) and the original BTX prototype (N381TX) arrived at Edwards AFB on 21 August to boost the ongoing flight test campaign, which is running some way behind schedule.

The T-7A Integrated Test Force, part of the Airpower Foundations Combined Test Force, is a partnership between the 416th FLTS, AFOTEC (Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center), and Boeing. Until recently, it operated a single T-7A, having received the first production representative aircraft to fly (21-7002, APT-002) on 8 November 2023. Another aircraft, (21-7003, APT-003), was dispatched to Eglin AFB on 15 December 2023, for climate testing at the McKinley Climatic Laboratory. The aircraft assigned to Edwards was due to have been joined by APT-004 in December 2023, and by APT-005 in January 2024, but the delivery of these aircraft was delayed by unspecified quality issues with parts from Boeing suppliers.

To bridge the gap, the first T-7A Redhawk (71-7001, APT-001) and the first of two original prototype aircraft (N381TX, BTX-1) were dispatched to Edwards AFB, though neither aircraft is fully representative of the production configuration, and had not been expected to participate in USAF EMD (Engineering, Manufacturing, and Development) flying.

The two aircraft arrived at Edwards on August 21, 2024, flown by Boeing test pilots and Lt Col Charles Brantigan, Commander of the 416th FLTS and Lt Col Jonathan Aronoff, Director of the T-7A Integrated Test Force. They routed from St Louis to Tinker AFB on 20 August, before flying on to Colorado Springs, and then on to Edwards AFB.

David C. Shanks was a troop transport that served with the US Army during World War II as USAT David C. Shanks, and during the Korean War with the US Navy's Military Sea Transportation Service as the USNS David C. Shanks (T-AP-180).

Service history

The ship was laid down for the Maritime Commission (MC) as MC hull 165, yard hull number 298, with prospective names of American Farmer / Gulfport, a Type C3-1N-P&C (Passenger & Cargo) ship by Ingalls Shipbuilding of Pascagoula, Mississippi. The ship was allocated to the War Department, completed on 24 April 1943 and turned over for operation by the US Army Transportation Service at Mobile, Alabama as USAT David C . Shanks. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Army transport

Completed as an Army troop transport named for Major General David C. Shanks, the commander of the Port of Hoboken during World War I, the 12,097 GRT, 489 ft (149.0 m) overall length ship with capacity for 1,935 passengers was accepted by the Army, briefly put into New Orleans and made a voyage to Jamaica and return to New Orleans. [5]

In June 1943 the ship transferred to the Pacific stopping at San Francisco Port of Embarkation for a voyage to Honolulu. The next voyage in July was for the South West Pacific theatre (SWPA) to Brisbane and Milne Bay. In September the ship returned to San Francisco, where minor modifications improving ventilation and armament were made with operations resumed to SWPA ports including Auckland, Oro Bay, Noumea, Biak, and others. [5]

The transport left San Francisco for the Atlantic in July 1945 going to Leghorn, Italy returning troops to Hampton Roads. From Hampton Roads the transport made two round trips to Marseilles and Gibraltar before stopping at New York in December 1945 before sailing for Leyte, Philippines. On return 1 February 1946 to San Francisco after that voyage the ship underwent modifications to transport 430 dependents and 678 troops. After modification the transport made a voyage to Honolulu, Auckland, and Sydney. [5]

Transfer to Navy

On 15 March 1950, along with most of the Army's large transports, the ship was transferred to the MSTS designated USNS David C. Shanks (T-AP-180). Navy shifted the transport's home port, then Seattle, to San Francisco where voyages were made throughout the Pacific, including Honolulu, Manila, Guam, Kwajalein, Alaska, Japan, and Taiwan. In September 1959 the transport made final arrival at Los Angeles before shifting to San Francisco in October for inactivation and layup. The ship participated in operations to contain the Communist Chinese advance in Korea during the conflict there between December 1950 – January 1951, and earned a battle star for her service. [3] The final transport configuration at layup was for a total of 1,013 passengers, 329 cabin and 684 troops. [2]

WASHINGTON—Kamala Harris calls herself the underdog against Donald Trump. Making that argument is an old ploy to motivate voters, but with two weeks until Election Day the vice president’stop advisers and allies are worrying it might be true.

Harris’s struggle to nail down support from key voting blocs in the Democratic coalition has left her team unsettled, according to interviews with aides and advisers. She enjoys strong support with women,but she has a clear problem with men, including both Black men and white working-class men. She also has failed to shore up support among Michigan’s Arab-Americans, who have been frustrated with the Biden administration’s handling of the widening conflict in the Middle East.

“People were feeling better three weeks ago,” said one Democrat close to the campaign, who added thatit was always going to be a close race and that Democrats are given to 11th hour panic.

Some Democrats say the memories of the 2016 campaign—when a confident Hillary Clinton lost to Trump—loom over this year’s race, and activists are determined to avoid the same outcome.

Harris campaign advisers say they are clear-eyed about the challenges. During a recent call with staff, campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said: “This is not going to be a race where one day we wake up and the sun shines and the clouds part and we’ve won by five points. It’s just not that kind of race. It is tight, and we are going to just keep driving.”

O’Malley Dillon told staff that internal data shows Harris is winning and would stay ahead, but “it is by the skin of our teeth, and it’s going to take all of us together.”

Polling shows a deadlocked race, but Harris advisers say they have an edge over Trump by virtue of campaign infrastructure that will turn out her vote—including door-knocking, data collection and millions of dollars in targeted advertising. The campaign also has sought to fortify the “blue wall” states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, which remain her most logical pathway to the White House, with repeated trips to those states. Public polling has shown the race essentially tied in the three states, with survey averages shifting a point or two—within the polls’ margins of error—to Trump’s benefit since Oct. 1.

They also aretrying to capitalize on Harris’s advantage with women(kek), hoping to drive up turnout among white women who are concerned about abortion rights. The vice president plans to bring the issue to the forefront with a rally Friday in Texas, where nearly all abortions are banned after six weeks of pregnancy. They are still making a play for men, releasing policy plans aimed at Black and Latino men and going on podcasts and shows geared at men.

On Monday, Harris did events in the three Great Lakes states alongside former Rep. Liz Cheney (R., Wyo.), aiming to connect with women and undecided voters who have raised concerns about abortion rights and the erosion of democratic principles. The Harris camp is hoping to peel off more Republicans and independents tohelp offset declining support among other voting blocs, including younger men.

“We’re absolutely aware that Michigan is close, but we’re very confident in our infrastructure and our ability to get this over the finish line,” said Rep. Haley Stevens (D., Mich.).
