Ex-Abercrombie CEO arrested on sex trafficking charges

The former CEO of fashion giant Abercrombie & Fitch and his British partner have been arrested and are facing sex trafficking charges, the BBC understands.

Mike Jeffries, his partner Matthew Smith and the couple’s alleged middle-man were arrested on Tuesday morning.

The FBI and prosecutor's office are expected to announce more details at a press conference shortly.

Lawyers for Mr Jeffries and Mr Smith have been approached for comment. They have previously "vehemently denied" any wrongdoing by both men.

The FBI opened an investigation last year after the BBC revealed claims that Mike Jeffries and his partner sexually exploited and abused men at events they hosted in their New York residences and hotels around the world.

A BBC investigation found there was sophisticated operation involving a middleman and network of recruiters tasked with recruiting men for the events.

Confirming the arrest, Brad Edwards of firm Edwards Henderson, a civil lawyer representing some of the alleged victims, said: "These arrests are a huge first step towards obtaining justice for the many victims who were exploited and abused through this sex-trafficking scheme that operated for many years under the legitimate cover Abercrombie provided.

"The unprecedented reporting of the BBC, coupled with the lawsuit our firm filed detailing the operation, are to credit for these monumental arrests. This was the result of impressive investigative journalism."

More men have come forward to the BBC accusing the former chief executive of Abercrombie & Fitch and his British partner of sexual exploitation. Some allege they were abused, and some that they were injected with drugs.

Luke says he was shocked as he was guided into Mike Jeffries’ presidential suite in a hotel in Spain. "It was like a movie set of an Abercrombie store," he recalls of the event in 2011. "And I thought we were going to do a photoshoot."

He says the room was dimly lit with erotic photos of men’s abs adorning the dark walls. In the middle, a group of assistants dressed in Abercrombie & Fitch uniforms - polos, blue jeans and flip-flops - were casually folding clothes on a table, pretending to be shop workers, he says.

Then aged 20, Luke says he had been offered the chance of being in a company advert if he flew from his home in Los Angeles to Madrid to meet the CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F).

Luke says the proposal had come via a modelling website from a man who said he worked as a talent scout and executive assistant for Mr Jeffries - then head of the billion-dollar teen retailer.

In the suite, he says Mr Jeffries' assistants began engaging in role-play, encouraging him to act as a shirtless greeter, a hallmark of A&F stores at the time. Luke says he remembers the talent scout saying: "Now I have two very important guests, and these are going to be the customers that you need to impress and entertain because they're going to be buying a lot of clothes from you."

At that moment, he says Mr Jeffries and his life partner, Matthew Smith, came out of a corner of the room. They immediately started touching him and Mr Jeffries forcibly kissed him, he says. "I was trying to avoid the whole situation as much as I could, but Michael was very aggressive." He says the Abercrombie boss then performed oral sex on him.

“I tried to say no repeatedly. And then I just got kind of convinced to do something. But I constantly was saying no, and I wanted to go.”

When this magazine revived the annual “Power Issue” last year, we assembled a list of secretly powerful New Yorkers in an effort to explain how the city actually works. This year, we were curious to understand how the news media is surviving in a time of imploding business models and record public distrust.We gathered 57 of the most powerful people in media— and rather than simply anoint them, we put them to work. What follows is a tour through the state of journalism, assembled from dozens of hours of extremely candid conversations.

 

Some executives we spoke to are in the business of keeping legacy institutions like the New York Times or the Washington Postviable; some are trying to build new media companies like Puck, The Ankler, or The Free Press; some are sole proprietors of their own brands via newsletters or audio. We focused largely on the news media: the organizations and individuals responsible for producing and distributing information to the public, whether it concerns politics or fashion or sports. And because news organizations are obviously no longer the only places — or, in some cases, even the main places — people get their news today, we didn’t look just at traditional news outlets. We also included people like Neal Mohan, head of YouTube, the platform where zoomers are increasingly likely to get their news, and Lauren Kern, head of Apple News, essentially the world’s largest newsstand.

All of these media insiders have watched up close as the business that undergirdsjournalism changed dramatically in the past decade, and almost all of them would agree that it hasn’t, for the most part, been for the better. We wanted to understand not just what this new state of media looks like but what the future of getting reliable news out in the world might actually be. Which news organizations are struggling most to find their footing, and which seem to have figured out how to find an audience?Can any of those companies get people to pay for their journalism? What’s the point of print?=

 

Are Facebook, Google, and X the enemies of the press or still, somehow, its salvation? What happened to the industry that scaled up to manufacture clickbait? And who’s going to train the next generation of journalists?Is getting 9,000 steady paying readers better than trying to reach a mass audience?

 

And can anyone besides TikTok and Facebook even reach a mass audience these days?

 

Some unquestionably powerful figures declined to participate, and to avoid the obvious conflicts, we didn’t include any current employees from, or any conversations about, New York or its parent company, Vox Media. We also allowed those who spoke to us to be anonymous as often as they wished since our driving interest was in having genuinely honest conversations with people important enough that they can’t always be candid when quoted by name.

 

One question that emerged waswhether any organization or individual has the ability to influence culture or shape perspectives as was once common in this business; that role today seems to rest more with social platforms and search engines, as well as the singular figure of Elon Musk.

 

Our sources struggled to identify how power in the media works now.It’s not that no one has power anymore, but their reach is increasingly narrow and threatened by the rapidly eroding agreement over the facts. (Don't lie, that should be easy.)

 

Still, we found a lot of optimism about the media business and its future.

 

Even those who are gloomy about the state of the industrysee a lot of good work being done in their own shops and those of their rivals. As one editor-in-chief impishly put it, “Everyone who’s not having fun and just doing 20th-century stuff is so boring. It’s too much work to not have fun in it. The media universe will keep transforming, and some changes will be for the better. Five years from now, we’ll all be different because it feels like we’re on the cusp of some crazy new thing.”

These dark pillars may look destructive, but they are creating stars. This pillar-capturing picture of the Eagle Nebula combines visible light exposures taken with the Hubble Space Telescope with infrared images taken with the James Webb Space Telescope to highlight evaporating gaseous globules (EGGs) emerging from pillars of molecular hydrogen gas and dust. The giant pillars are light years in length and are so dense that interior gas contracts gravitationally to form stars. At each pillar's end, the intense radiation of bright young stars causes low density material to boil away, leaving stellar nurseries of dense EGGs exposed. The Eagle Nebula, associated with the open star cluster M16, lies about 7000 light years away.

The Biden administration’s now-suspended Iran envoy Robert Malley helped to fund, support, and direct an Iranian intelligence operation designed to influence the United States and allied governments, according to a trove of purloined Iranian government emails. The emails, which were reported on by veteran Wall Street Journal correspondent Jay Solomon, writing in Semafor, and by Iran International, the London-based émigré opposition outlet which is the most widely read independent news source inside Iran, were published last week after being extensively verified over a period of several months by the two outlets. They showed that Malley had helped to infiltrate an Iranian agent of influence named Ariane Tabatabai into some of the most sensitive positions in the U.S. government—first at the State Department andnow the Pentagon, where she has been serving as chief of staff for the assistant secretary of defense for special operations, Christopher Maier.

 

On Thursday, Maier told a congressional committee that the Defense Department is “actively looking into whether all law and policy was properly followed in granting my chief of staff top secret special compartmented information.”

The United States Marshal Services are moving them around significantly for no reason, meaning they are providing "proffer statements" in which they have to be 100% truthful, answer all questions, be available to any and all investigators, disclose literally every crime they have ever committed, or face new charges and lose their deal.

This shit just got even crazier.

 

Okay, so El Chapo's sons are snitching. El Chapo never snitched. At trial and on appeal El Chapo was represented by attorney Jeffrey Lichtman in 2019.

 

Fast forward, Guzman Jr. kidnaps El Mayo (Chapo's boss thus even more valuable than Chapo), and turns himself in just a year after his brother was arrested the second time and extridicted. BOTH of Chapo's kids are also represented by Jeffrey Lichtman.

 

Now, the crazy part. El Chapo, from ADX, just filed a motion for a new trial on the grounds that his attorney at trial and on appeal (Jeffrey Lichtman) was an ineffective counsel.

 

Speculation here is this: Guzman Jr.'s kidnapping of El Mayo was set up in advance with the other brother's cooperation during the year he was in custody and for the benefit of both. This is not a small benefit, as it could alone be worth more than enough to release both with no prison time or time served, but El Mayo is worth way too much alone, like he was El Chapo's boss. He was more wanted than Chapo. So, alone, the value left over after both Chapo's kids could be substantial, so they have several options.

 

First they negotiate for the other 2 brothers not in custody, who are still running the Sinaloa Cartel. The deal would most certainly include not charging their other 2 brothers. Is this the value of El Mayo? Maybe, but Secondly, they start negotiating for their dad El Chapo. This could be problematic because Chapo had no appeals left, and no chance of getting a reduced sentenced, unless he can claim a last ditch effort to retry his case. The only option left is to say his attorney was not effective. This is what all prisoners, and last minute death penalty appeals hedges on so it's like an almost impossible bar to meet. In this case, the SAME attorney that Chapo is claiming is ineffective is the SAME attorney negotiating the deal with Chapo's sons.

 

IF this last ineffective counsel appeal is granted, Chapo will be assigned a new attorney and his case will essentially restart. The new attorney will start negotiations with the government and those will certainly include the deal his sons made.

 

Okay, now let's look at this document from a critical thinking point of view. 1) every other document sent to the court from Chapo himself, handwritten, has been in Spanish. Chapo doesn't write or speak English. This documebt is in English. 2) Chapo is in ADX in Colorado, the highest security prison in the country. 3) The document is not in Chapo's handwriting. 4) There is ZERO contact with other prisoners, so no jailhouse lawyers to help. 5) there is zero contact with visitors. 6) Look at the use of ( … ) and other grammar and the large legal words and phrases that are fundamentally unused daily. 7) There is no broadcast television or radio or news (papers and news are purposely weeks old or months old inside ADX and almost certainly entirely in English)…

 

So, who wrote this? The timing is ironically coincidental.

 

Chapo's about to get a sweetheart resentence and put in the witness protection program with his sons.

 

The first document is the appeal, and the second documebt is a former pro se document by Chapo for comparison.

Gateway: Life in a Lunar Module

Teams at NASA, ESA (European Space Agency), and Thales Alenia Space, including astronauts Stan Love and Luca Parmitano, came together in Turin, Italy, this summer for a test run of Gateway, humanity’s first space station to orbit the Moon.

 

The group conducted what is known as human factors testing inside a mockup of Lunar I-Hab, one of four Gateway modules where astronauts will live, conduct science, and prepare for missions to the Moon’s South Pole region.

The testing is an important step on the path to launch by helping refine the design of spacecraft for comfort and safety.

 

Lunar I-Hab is provided by ESA and Thales Alenia Space and is slated to launch on Artemis IV.

During that mission, four astronauts will launch inside the Orion spacecraft atop an upgraded version of the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and deliver Lunar I-Hab to Gateway in orbit around the Moon.

 

ESA, CSA (Canadian Space Agency), JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), and the Mohammad Bin Rashid Space Centre of the United Arab Emirates are providing major hardware for Gateway, including science experiments, the modules where astronauts will live and work, robotics, and life support systems.

 

International teams of astronauts will explore the scientific mysteries of deep space with Gateway as part of the Artemis campaign to return to the Moon for scientific discovery and chart a path for the first human missions to Mars and beyond.

Libre Space Foundation Aims To Improve Satellite Tech

There’s no shortage of movies, TV shows, and books that show a dystopian future with corporations run amok in outer space with little or no effective oversight.

Dune, The Expanse, and The Dispossessed spring to mind as predicting different aspects of this idea, but there are plenty of other warnings throughout sci-fi depicting this potential future.

One possible way of preventing this outcome is by ensuring that space is as open-sourced as possible and one group, the Libre Space Foundation (LSF), is working towards this end.

Their latest is a project with Ondsel to develop and model a satellite deploying mechanism using almost entirely open source software.

 

The LSF had already designed the PICOBUS satellite launcher system that flew to space in 2022 and deployed a number of CubeSats, but the group needed more information about how the system would perform.

They turned to Ondsel to help develop a multi-body dynamics (MBD) solver, managing simulations with mass-spring-damper models.

The satellite launcher includes a large constant-force spring that pushes the CubeSats out of the device once the door is opened, and the model can now simulate their paths in space without gravity.

The team will launch their next set of satellites sometime next year on an RFA-ONE rocket.

 

The LSF maintains a huge database of their open source space projects, including this one, on their GitLab page.

Although it might seem like small potatoes now, the adoption of open source software and hardware by space-fairing entities can help further the democratization of low Earth orbit.

Initial investigation into US intelligence leak on Israeli attack planning focusing on who had access to documents

The publication on social media of two classified US intelligence documents detailingIsraeli preparations for an attack on Iran has set off a scramble inside the US government to discover how they were leaked, a closely held investigation in its early stages that is zeroing in on who had access to the documents. The FBI is leading the investigation, working with Pentagon investigators and the intelligence community, according to US officials briefed on the matter. The FBI confirmed the probe Tuesday.

 

“The FBI is investigating the alleged leak of classified documents and working closely with our partners in the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community. As this is an ongoing investigation, we have no further comment,” the bureau said in a statement. On Monday, theWhite House said publicly that there are presently no indications that more documentsbeyond those two had been leaked or would be published. But the exposure of the two documents — which appeared to have been produced by two Defense Department intelligence entities, the National Security Agency and the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency — has deeply alarmed American officials at a profoundly sensitive moment in US-Israel relations.In recent days, investigators have worked to authenticate the documents and determine who could have had access to them, the officials said. That focus is one indication that, for now, the FBI and other investigators are working off the theorythat the breach most likely came from a government insider and not from a cyber intrusion.

 

Both documents were widely accessible products, according to two sources familiar with US intelligence. But at least one appears to be scanned from an officially printed briefing book. That could provide investigators with a critical jumping-off point: The Defense Department, like other federal agencies, tracks when employees print classified documents. The pool of people who printed these pages would be relatively small, these sources said.

 

But the investigation is still considered to be in its early stages, so no conclusions have been made, the officials say. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters Monday that officials do not yet know how the documents were released and that the Department of Defense is continuing its investigation. Kirby also said that“at this time” they have no reason to believe similar documents will be released.WTF???

 

“We don’t have any indication at this point that there’s an expectation that there will be additional documents like this finding their way into the public domain,” he said.The documents, dated October 15 and 16, began circulating online Friday after being posted on Telegram by an account called “Middle East Spectator.” They are marked top secret and have markings indicating they are meant to beseen only by the US and its “Five Eyes” allies— Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

One of the documents, which says it was compiled by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, says the plans involve Israel moving munitions around. Another document says it is sourced to the National Security Agency and outlines Israeli air force exercises involving air-to-surface missiles, also believed to be in preparation for a strike on Iran. CNN is not quoting directly from or showing the documents. Highlighting the sensitive nature of the leak, American officials were extremely tight-lipped about the investigation on Monday. Officially, multiple agencies declined even to confirm that an investigation is ongoing.

 

In a statement over the weekend, the Middle East Spectator account said it was “not aware of any additional leaked classified U.S. documents” and that it had “no connection to the original source, which we assume to be a whistleblower within the U.S. Department of Defense.”

 

According to one US official,it wasn’t what the documents described that is so worrying to the intelligence community but rather the fact that they leaked at all. Although it’s quietly accepted that the US spies even on its allies, to have American surveillance of Israel leaked publicly risks straining relations at a moment when the US is desperately trying to bring to a close the series of interconnected conflicts in which Israel is now embroiled.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R., N.Y.) slammed Obama-appointed attorney general Loretta Lynch for "selling out" to the Chinese Communist Party by representing a U.S.-designated Chinese military firm in its lawsuit against the Pentagon.

 

Shenzhen DJI Technology Company (DJI), a Chinese drone manufacturer, is suing the Pentagon over its 2022 decision to add DJI to its blacklistof "Military Companies Operating in the United States," which are considered potential national security threats. In its lawsuit, DJI—which is one of the largest producers of drones in the world—alleged that the Chinese military label has negatively impacted its business and "violates the law and DJI’s due-process rights."

 

Stefanik said that Lynch "has turned her back on her nation, selling out to our greatest adversary Communist China and suing the United States on behalf of CCP-owned drone company DJI."

 

"Not only is her lawsuit full of factual errors, it is also an obvious effort by DJI to distract from CBP’s recent halting of DJI imports due to Uyghur slave labor concerns and a futile attempt to disrupt the momentum behind my unanimously passed Countering CCP Drones Act," the New York representative told National Review.

 

Stefanik—who wrote the Countering CCP Drones Act, which blocked DJI products from "operating on U.S. communications infrastructure"—also said that the drone company’s "sham lawsuit is not going to save them."

Japan's space agency officially approves 2 astronauts after training

Japan's space agency said Tuesday that it has officially approved two candidates who underwent domestic training as astronauts, with expectations growing that they may join NASA's mission to the Moon.

Makoto Suwa, 47, a former disaster prevention specialist at the World Bank, and Ayu Yoneda, 29, who served as a surgeon at the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center, plan to move to the United States to enhance their knowledge and skills in space activities.

 

At the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Suwa and Yoneda, who were certified as astronauts on Monday, hope to be part of the Artemis Moon exploration program.

The Artemis program aims to send people to the lunar surface in 2026, more than half a century since the last Apollo mission. Japan, a close U.S. ally, is seeking to become the second country after the United States to land an astronaut on the Moon.

 

Since being selected as candidates by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency in February 2023, Suwa and Yoneda have engaged in basic training, including piloting a plane, health management in outer space and electrical engineering.

Suwa and Yoneda became the first astronauts approved by JAXA since 2011, when Kimiya Yui, 54, Takuya Onishi, 48, and Norishige Kanai, 47, were certified.

JAXA now has seven astronauts, two of whom are expected to participate in the Artemis program.

As Kamala Harris aggressively tacks to the center in her run for the presidency,back in her notoriously progressive birthplace of Oakland, one of her closest associates is also seeking national office.

 

Lateefah Simon, Harris’s longtime protégé, close friend, and early proponent of the "defund the police" movement, is running for Congress. But unlike Harris, Simon is proud of her progressive views. That might be why Harris, who once officiated Simon’s wedding, has not endorsed her mentee. And when Harris does speak of Simon, it's not in public but rather at private fundraisers, like the San Francisco soirée she held in August. Harris went "off-script" at the fundraiser—cameras were not allowed in—to thank Gov. Gavin Newsom (D.), Simon, and other California officials, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

 

But before she first ran for president in 2019, Harris, 59, maintained close—and public—ties to Simon, 47, for a time period spanning 20 years.The future vice president pushed Simon to finish college, gave her a government job, introduced her to her late husband, officiated their wedding, and eulogized him at his funeral. She also campaigned for Simon’s successful 2016 race to join the board of directors for the Bay Area’s crime-ridden BART public train system, where Simon would try to defund its police force by $2 million.

 

Simon has also spent years working for liberal billionaires, bankrolling efforts at left-leaning criminal justice reform and anti-police projects while—in her most recent job working for the wife of Netflix billionaire Reed Hastings—earning a salary of almost $558,000 a year.

 

And while the congressional candidate was selected to praise Harris at the Democratic National Convention, Simon spoke during the opening hour of the night’s programming, well before Oprah Winfrey and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz took the stage. In her speech, during which the vice president was nowhere to be seen, Simon said that during the four years she served under Harris, her mentor and then-San Francisco district attorney, the pair worked together "day in and day out."

 

"She saw my potential, my commitment, and the good work that we could do together," Simon said of her time in Harris’s office.

 

When an interviewer for San Francisco’s KQED this summer suggested that Harris and Simon’s relationship was "a little bit mentor and a little bit family," Simon said Harris "is auntie status, she is mentor status."

 

But the family-like relationship between the two women has become a one-way street as Harris runs for president. Simon continues to gush about Harris publicly, while her mentor has been largely silent. Indeed, by tying her own political history so closely to Harris, Simon could undercut the vice president’s attempts to appeal to moderate voters. Harris has touted her prosecutorial record, describing herself as "tough" and "fearless." (In 2020, she supported slashing police budgets, ending cash bail, and eliminating "mass incarceration.") The presidential nominee has also withdrawn her support for progressive causes like a fracking ban and Medicare for All, and repeatedly failed to explain her change of heart.

 

Harris, meanwhile, publicly ignored Simon's convention speech, which Simon said was moved or canceled several times before she took the stage. Harris and her campaign did not send out clips of the speech on social media, as it did for other speakers. And while the San Francisco Chronicle reported, without attribution, "that Harris personally asked Simon to introduce her to the world" at the convention, Harris did not attend proceedings the night Simon spoke.

Earth from space: Bizarre 'pet cloud' reappears above its favorite spot in New Zealand

A peculiar "pet cloud" took center stage in a recent satellite photo of New Zealand.

The freaky formation often appears in the same spot thanks to a nearby mountain range — and is sometimes confused with a UFO.

 

The wispy oblong, known by locals as the "Taieri Pet," is an elongated altocumulus standing lenticular cloud (ASLC) that frequently appears between the towns Middlemarch and Hyde in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island.

Although they can vary slightly in size, the clouds always look very similar and appear in almost the same spot.

The example in this image is around 7 miles (11.5 kilometers) long.

 

ASLCs form when waves of air pass over a topographic barrier, like a mountain range, forcing water vapor to condense into vertical layers, according to the National Weather Service.

The Taieri Pet forms when moist air passes over the mountainous Rock and Pillar Range (located parallel to the left of the cloud in the photo) and is held in place and further shaped by perpendicular winds blowing from the north, according to NASA's Earth Observatory.

 

"As the cloud forms on the crest of this wave, it remains almost stationary in the sky and is shaped by the strong winds blowing through it," John Law, a meteorologist with New Zealand's MetService, told Earth Observatory.

Lenticular clouds are often shaped like flying saucers and are "believed to be one of the most common explanations for UFO sightings across the world," according to the U.K. Met Office.

 

When viewed side-on, the Taieri Pet often has multiple well-defined layers on top of one another, like a "huge stack of pancakes" or a "pile of plates," Earth Observatory representatives wrote.

Past photos of the cloud show it can be several hundred feet tall.

 

The height of lenticular clouds can make them a surprising aviation risk.

Planes can experience severe turbulence when flying through the structures, due to vertical currents that run up and down through the cloud.

The clouds' unusually low temperatures also cause ice to form on planes, according to the U.K. Met Office.

 

ASLCs can be a sign that atmospheric conditions are about to change and are often followed by increased levels of precipitation, according to Fox Weather.

However, historical weather data suggest this did not happen in this case.

Harris has also refrained from endorsing Simon, even as a who's who of California Democrats have, including former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, Gov. Gavin Newsom, Sen. Alex Padilla, Rep. Barbara Lee (whom Simon is running to succeed), and Attorney General Rob Bonta. Simon nonetheless told the Chronicle in September that " I’m going to be telling the story about how Kamala transformed my life for the rest of my life." (WOW when so many progressive wild democrats won’t support her, she must be much worse.)

 

Critics argue that the radical criminal justice reforms Simon played a key role in supporting while working for wealthy progressives sowed the seeds of the Oakland crime wave that led businesses to shutter and caused the governor to send in back-up prosecutors and police this year. Nevertheless, Simon is favored to win the Oakland congressional seat of longtime progressive Lee, who is leaving Congress after losing her Senate primary to Donald Trump nemesis Adam Schiff.

 

"Do we want another leader who has been the architect and funder of the national defund the police movement? I would say no," said Jennifer Tran, a Democrat and ethnic studies professor running against Simon. Despite her extensive progressive credentials, Tran is to the right of her opponent on crime. "Everyone can see how much these failed policies are harming our communities," she said.

 

Tran sees Simon’s campaign as simply "riding the coattails of Kamala Harris." Simon has refused to debate her opponents and, like Harris, offers few policy details.

 

Campaign representatives for Harris and Simon did not respond to requests for comment.

 

Harris, as San Francisco’s top cop, hired Simon in 2005 to run a program that scrubbed some first-time drug dealers’ criminal records if they went through school or job training. The move was unusual at the time, as it expanded the district attorney’s role beyond that of prosecutor. Both Harris and Simon have touted the program for cutting recidivism. Harris went on to become California’s attorney general, overseeing a 10 percent increase in violent crime statewide.

 

In 2011, Simon became the program director of the left-wing Rosenberg Foundation, which teamed up with Soros’s Open Society Foundations and California progressives to push a successful 2014 voter ballot initiative decriminalizing retail theft and drug dealing. Harris, then California’s attorney general, predicted on the ballot that it would send hundreds of millions in "criminal justice system savings" into school truancy prevention, addiction treatment, and victim help. Prosecutors across the state have blamed the measure for California’s rampant drug, homelessness, and crime problems—not to mention retailers such as Walgreens and CVS having to lock up many of their products due to a shoplifting epidemic—and California voters are on track to repeal most of it in November through a referendum supported by San Francisco's sitting Democratic mayor.

 

From 2016 until 2022, Simon served as president of the Akonadi Foundation, founded by progressive donors Quinn Delaney and Wayne Jordan, to remove police from Oakland schools and fund other anti-incarceration, anti-law enforcement endeavors. In that role, she collected some $2 million in salary, tax filings show. Jordan and Delaney together gave $1.5 million to Harris’s campaign in May and June, before she became the Democratic presidential nominee. They are also major backers of Simon’s campaign.

 

As Akonadi chief, Simon funneled money to radical Bay Area groups, including the Anti Police-Terror Project, which advocates for police abolition while reportedly enriching family and friends.She also directed funds to left-wing dark money powerhouses like the New Venture Fund and the Tides Foundation.

…The largest French fry producer in North America and a significant supplier to fast food chains, restaurants, and grocery stores, Lamb Weston, is closing a production facility in Washington state. The company announced that it will lay off nearly 400 employees from the Connell plant and temporarily scale back production lines elsewhere. Additionally, Lamb Weston will be reducing approximately 4 percent of its global workforce in this restructuring effort. This is in response to declining customer demand and oversupply issues. “Restaurant traffic and frozen potato demand, relative to supply, continue to be soft, and we believe it will remain soft through the remainder of fiscal 2025,” said Tom Werner, President and CEO of Lamb Weston.

Lamb Weston, the largest producer of french fries in North America, announced last week it was closing its plant in Connell, Washington, meaning 375 employees, or 4% of its workforce, would be laid off, according to an earnings report released last week.

 

"Restaurant traffic and frozen potato demand, relative to supply, continue to be soft, and we believe it will remain soft through the remainder of fiscal 2025," Tom Werner, Lamb Weston president and CEO, said last week on an earnings call.

Former Abercrombie and Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries has been arrested for sex trafficking and interstate prostitution.

Jeffries, 80, and his British partner Matthew Smith, 61, were arrested in West Palm Beach on Thursday, according to ABC News. A third man, Jim Jacobson, was arrested in the same case in Wisconsin.

 

The three men are accused of sexually exploiting and abusing young men at parties they hosted in the US and around the world.

 

Prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York said in January they had launched a criminal probe after several men publicly claimed they were abused by Jeffries and his partner.

 

Jeffries and his long-time boyfriend were last year accused in a bombshell BBC documentary of engaging in sex trafficking between 2009 and 2015. They have denied the allegations.

 

The partners are expected to appear in federal court later on Tuesday.

 

Accusers Barrett Pall and David Bradberry claimed they were recruited for 'modelling opportunities' through a middleman - Jacobson - but found themselves sexually exploited.

Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries Arrested on Sex Trafficking Charges

The erstwhile CEO of fashion brand Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) Mike Jeffries and his British partner have been arrested and are facing sex trafficking charges.

 

NBC News reports Jeffries has been arrested in West Palm Beach, Florida. Two other associates, Matthew Smith of West Palm Beach and James Jacobson of Wisconsin, were also arrested in connection with trafficking charges relating to young men and sex parties.

 

They are expected to appear in federal court in Florida and Wisconsin on Tuesday and arraigned at a later date in the eastern District of New York.

 

Jeffries was the CEO of the popular clothing brand from 1992 to 2014. He stepped down with a $25 million retirement package.

 

The news of his arrest comes one year after BBC News published an explosive report that said Jeffries exploited men at sex parties he hosted, as Breitbart News reported.

 

That report said 12 men described attending or organizing events that included sex acts for Jeffries and his partner Matthew Smith, and those events allegedly took place from 2009 to 2015.

 

Some of the men who spoke to BBC said they were exploited or didn’t participate willingly.

 

Lawyers for Jeffries and Smith have both previously denied any wrongdoing by both men.

 

Responding to the latest news, Jeffries’ lawyer told the BBC: “We will respond in detail to the allegations after the Indictment is unsealed, and when appropriate, but plan to do so in the courthouse – not the media.”

With real scientific data, artist Martin Vargic has visualized hundreds of alien planets

As shocking as it sounds today, prior to the 1990s, scientists couldn't be certain that stars beyond the sun also had planets orbiting them.

Since the discovery of the first extra-solar planet, or "exoplanet," around 30 years ago, over 6,000 of these distant worlds have been revealed, with thousands more detected but not yet confirmed.

The burgeoning exoplanet catalog has delivered a multitude of planets that really emphasize the "alien" in "alien worlds."

 

With planets so hot they rain iron, planets with savage, glass-filled winds and planets so mishappen by their stars they roll around in their orbits like eggs, it is little wonder that exoplanets have captivated people beyond the hallowed halls of scientific academia, inspiring incredible and breathtaking works of art.

One artist captivated by exoplanets is Martin Vargic, a Slovak artist and the author of the "Curious Cosmical Compendium."

"I have been interested in astronomy since I can remember and was always captivated by the idea of other planets orbiting distant stars unlike anything in the solar system," 26-year-old Vargic told Space.com.

"In 2015, I created the first version of what would eventually become my exoplanet infographics.

After publishing my first book dedicated to maps and map-inspired infographics, I decided to create another visual book, this time focused on the universe, astronomy and space exploration."

 

The book, which Vargic said took almost three years to complete, featured chapters such as "Scale of the Universe," "Timeline of the Universe" and, of course, an entire section focused on exoplanets.

The artist organized these worlds by temperature, ascending page-by-page from Neptune-like ice worlds to blazing hot gas giants called "hot Jupiters."

 

This progression led up to "failed star" brown dwarfs, or objects that form like stars, but have masses between the most massive planet we know of and the least massive star in our books.

Brown dwarfs also can't trigger the nuclear fusion of hydrogen to helium in their cores, the process that defines what a "main sequence star" is.

Artwork of exoplanets, such as that created by Vargic, is valuable because, unlike other celestial objects such as stars and nebulas, exoplanets are usually too dim and too distant to be visualized directly.

In fact, it is partially this element of mystery that inspires Vargic.

 

"We have no way to determine how different exoplanets really look in detail yet, and this makes them a rich space for creativity," he explained.

"The vast majority of existing exoplanets on the graphic have never been portrayed graphically before, existing in the minds of people just as a series of numbers and digits describing their different orbital parameters and size, the graphic adding texture, color and shape as the real objects they are, some of them possibly harboring life."

Another aspect that fires up Vargic creatively is the huge variety and truly alien nature of exoplanets when compared to the relatively mundane and "safe" planets of the solar system.

 

"The variety and diversity of the few thousand exoplanets we already know of is impressive.

The planets in our solar system, varied as they are, represent only a minuscule part of a large, broad spectrum of planetary scale and temperature," he said.

"Even very similar exoplanets could differ in striking ways.

 

Different star systems having formed from distant nebulas of dust and gas could have different ratios of elements, and the process of formation and planetary evolution would be different depending on the size, activity, and spectrum of planets and their parent stars, making some planets richer or poorer in some chemical elements with potentially exotic consequences."

 

The artist added that other differing characteristics, such as rotation speed, would lead to variations in exoplanets' cloud bands, atmospheric currents and equatorial bulges. Vargic has tried to reflect this variety in his work.

"I decided to vary the color tones and the clouds structures of otherwise similar planets to represent this and make the infographic more varied and colorful," he explained.

Of course, with such a wide range of exoplanets out there, it is only natural for exoplanet enthusiasts to have a few favorites. And Vargic is no exception.

Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) is still visible in the night sky, and you can watch it live today thanks to a free livestream.

 

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is growing dimmer as it speeds away from Earth.

It should be visible through at least Saturday (Oct. 26), but the comet is speeding away from Earth and growing more difficult to see with the naked eye.

The comet is currently high in the west at sunset as seen from the mid-latitudes of North America, but is dim enough that a pair of binoculars or small telescope is likely your best bet at this point.

 

If you'd like a more up-close view of the comet without the need for optics, astronomer Gianluca Masi of the Virtual Telescope Project will be livestreaming telescope observations Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS beginning at 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT) on Monday (Oct. 21).

China's 'Shock' Statement: Palestinians Have Right To Use 'Armed Force' Against Israel

China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".

The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Beijing’s envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".

He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.

 

"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.

 

In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as “oppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination".

The ICJ’s public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.

The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.

Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.

International bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union will also take part. Israel will not participate but has sent written observations to the court.

(a) if .TOP Registry believes that the domain name was registered for use in a "phishing" attack or other illegal activity of any kind.

(b) if inaccurate or false contact details are provided.

 

Further to these conditions, .TOP Registry operates the following policy regarding suspected "phishing" domain names:

 

If we have a reasonable suspicion that a domain name registered at .TOP Registry is being used in for phishing, sale of counterfeit goods, hosting of illegal content, or otherwise being used for any illegal activity, we will place the domain name on "Server Hold" and optionally under a Registry Lock. This may occur as a result of an abuse report, or because the domain name appeared on a list of abusive domain names.

 

We will then notify the current registrar for the domain name and ask them to investigate the registration of the domain.

 

If the registrar provides evidence that refutes the abuse report, or positive evidence that the registration was not in "bad faith", we will unlock the domain name and place it on the "Live" status.
