Microsoft Accuses Google of Running ‘Shadow Campaigns’ in Europe to Influence Regulators

Microsoft has publicly accused its longtime rival Google of running “shadow campaigns” in Europe aimed at discrediting the software giant with regulators and misleading the public.

CNBC reports that Microsoft has openly accused Google of engaging in covert operations to undermine the company’s reputation with European regulators and the public. In a blog post published on Monday, Microsoft lawyer Rima Alaily alleged that Google hired a firm to recruit European cloud companies to represent the search giant’s case against Microsoft.

According to Alaily, Google has gone to great lengths to conceal its involvement, funding, and control over what she described as an “astroturf group” designed to discredit Microsoft with competition authorities, policymakers, and the public. The group, called the Open Cloud Coalition, is allegedly being launched this week with the backing of Google and a handful of European cloud providers serving as its public face.

Microsoft claims that one company, which declined to participate in the coalition, informed them that the group would receive financial support from Google and criticize Microsoft’s practices in Europe. Alaily also linked to a flyer for the Open Cloud Coalition, which states that the consortium is being formed to advocate for a fair, competitive, and open cloud services industry across the UK and EU.

Google, however, maintains that it has been very public about its concerns with Microsoft’s cloud licensing practices. A Google Cloud spokesperson stated, “We and many others believe that Microsoft’s anticompetitive practices lock-in customers and create negative downstream effects that impact cybersecurity, innovation, and choice.”

This conflict represents a fresh battle between the two tech giants, which compete in various sectors, including cloud infrastructure, online advertising, and productivity software. Google is currently facing increased regulatory scrutiny in both Europe and the United States, where it is in the midst of its second antitrust trial brought by the Justice Department.

South Africa on Monday filed a detailed submission to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) outlining evidence of Israel’s alleged violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention in its ongoing war on Gaza.

According to the South African presidency, the submission, also called a memorial, includes 750 pages of evidence of acts of genocide and genocidal intent.

"The evidence will show that undergirding Israel’s genocidal acts is the special intent to commit genocide, a failure by Israel to prevent incitement to genocide, to prevent genocide itself and its failure to punish those inciting and committing acts of genocide," a statement by the presidency said.

It added that the evidence is presented in more than 750 pages of text, in addition to over 4,000 pages of annexes.

"South Africa’s Memorial is a reminder to the global community to remember the people of Palestine, to stand in solidarity with them and to stop the catastrophe. The devastation and suffering has been possible only because despite the ICJ and numerous UN bodies’ actions and interventions, Israel has failed to comply with its international obligations,” it said.

BEAST SYSTEM: Israel to hire U.S.-based biometrics firm to screen Palestinians in Gaza

A new "Uber for war zones" scheme was unveiled by Israel this week to start screening, Holocaust-style, every Palestinian in the Gaza Strip.

According to reports, Israel plans to hire a private, U.S.-based logistics and security suite to develop a "gated community" in Gaza where all Palestinians would be subject to biometric screenings in order to qualify to receive aid.

Israel's war cabinet discussed the proposal over the weekend with plans to approve a "pilot" program within the next two months. Global Delivery Company (GDC), a company run by Israeli-American businessman Mordechai Kahana, is currently in talks with Israel to run the biometrics screening program.

For a while now, Israel has been contemplating the creation of so-called "humanitarian bubbles" in northern Gaza, including in and around the Jabalia refugee camp which, for the past three weeks, has been under total siege. Israel is not allowing any food, clean water or medical supplies to enter Jabalia, which is creating a humanitarian crisis.

Back in January, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an interim ruling that Israel must take immediate measures to ensure that the Palestinians living in Gaza receive basic services and humanitarian assistance. In response, Israel has come up with this biometrics screening scheme as a prerequisite for receiving aid.

GDC has been profiting from war for 14 years

It was Kahana himself who came up with the phrase "Uber for war zones" to describe his for-profit business. GDC has been operating this business for the past 14 years during which it operated in and profited from five wars, including in Afghanistan, Iraq, Gaza, Syria and Ukraine.

"Personnel working for our security sub-contractor are trained and equipped for non-lethal and lethal methods of crowd control," reads a GDC press release from this week. "They are trained to use deadly force only as a last resort if their lives are in danger."

One of GDC's former top officials, Stuart Seldowitz, is also a former U.S. government official who was charged with a hate crime after he abused a street food vendor. While Seldowitz no longer works for GDC, Kahana says he is still open to working with the guy.

Kahana himself has said some not-so-savory things about the Palestinians as well. Last November, he referred to Palestinian-American lawmaker Rashida Tlaib as Hamas's "ambassador to the U.S." Kahana has also joked about ethnically cleansing all Palestinians from Gaza and relocating them to Jordan.

Other high-level employees at GDC include former high-ranking Israeli military officers and former American military and intelligence operatives, meaning the operation is a military-industrial complex scheme that will surely not be nice to the Palestinians in Gaza.

Back in May, the media was reporting that Israel was in talks with U.S. security firms about managing the Rafah crossing at Gaza's southern border with Egypt. A few days after these reports were published, Kahana took to X / Twitter to state that he will be "assisting with humanitarian supplies" in Gaza, the suggestion being that GDC is one of the security firms involved.

"We came here with one clear purpose: the purpose is to settle the entire Gaza Strip, not just part of it, not just a few settlements, the entire Gaza Strip from north to south," said Daniella Weiss, the leader of Nachala, an orthodox Jewish settler movement that says it has more than 700 Jewish families that are looking to settle in Gaza.

Weiss organized a conference recently at which she promised attendees that the Palestinians will "disappear" from the Gaza Strip in due time, allowing Israel to annex the land as its own.

How Does AIPAC Shape Washington? We Tracked Every Dollar.

The Intercept followed AIPAC’s money trail to reveal how its political spending impacts the balance of power in Congress.

For decades, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee had been an influential presence on Capitol Hill, working behind the scenes to lobby politicians and their staffers in support of Israel. But ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, AIPAC made a decision that would fundamentally alter its purpose and the contours of American politics.

After 60 years of issues-based lobbying, AIPAC for the first time opted to spend directly on campaigns. Flush with millions of dollars from loyal donors, among them Republican billionaires and megadonors to former President Donald Trump, AIPAC embraced a new strategy. It would use its vast funds to oust progressive members of Congress who have criticized human rights abuses by Israel and the country’s receipt of billions of U.S. dollars in military funding.

Just two years after it started pouring money into campaigns, AIPAC has become one of the largest outside spenders in congressional elections. The Intercept has chronicled AIPAC’s power through coverage of individual races, but never before has AIPAC’s massive outflow of money been analyzed in sum. This project uses records from the Federal Election Commission — submitted by the lobbying group’s federal political action committee, AIPAC PAC, and its super PAC, United Democracy Project — to map how much money has been spent on behalf of Israel, where these groups are doling out money, and what impact those funds are having on the balance of power in Congress.

AIPAC did not respond to a request for comment.

After each of its wins this cycle, AIPAC posted to X: “Being pro-Israel is good policy and good politics!”

While it’s true that AIPAC won the overwhelming majority of races it waded into, the picture that emerges from AIPAC’s paper trail is more complex.

The Big Picture

When it rolled out its new strategy in the 2022 election cycle, AIPAC found immediate success. The lobbying group and another pro-Israel group, Democratic Majority for Israel, defeated Reps. Andy Levin, D-Mich., and Marie Newman, D-Ill., who were outspoken in their criticism of unconditional U.S. military funding for Israel. The campaign to defeat Levin marked a significant push from AIPAC to repress criticism of Israel even from Jewish members of Congress.

AIPAC has spent money on more than 80 percent of the 469 seats up for reelection this year.

Ahead of the 2024 cycle and amid growing public outrage over Israel’s war on Gaza, AIPAC made a bold pronouncement: Through its United Democracy Project arm and AIPAC PAC, it would spend $100 million on elections, about one-sixth of what outside groups spent on the 2020 presidential election.

There are few congressional races that AIPAC sat out this year. Of the 469 seats up for reelection this year, AIPAC has spent money on more than 80 percent: 389 races in total. AIPAC has sought influence over 363 seats in the House and 26 in the Senate.

Of the 389 candidates AIPAC funded, 57 did not face a primary. Of the primary elections that did take place, 88 candidates had no opponent.
