I imagine it to be like the electromagnetic spectrum. I picture a continuum that gradually varies with wavelength. Radio - IR - Visible - UV … Gamma etc.
If you place the elements in a similar ordered sequence you can mentally create a matter/energy continuum.
Since matter and energy are interchangeable, matter and energy can be represented as different energy states along an energy continuum.
