Donald Trump Flips Most Hispanic County in America

 

Donald Trump successfully flipped the most Hispanic county in America, which was one that had not voted Republican for more than a century.

 

In what has been dubbed "the greatest political comeback in history," Trump has reclaimed the White House after victory in several swing states pushed him over the 270 Electoral College threshold he needed.

 

As final results are still pouring in, it is clear that Trump has overperformed his 2020 results across the map, including in Starr County, Texas, where he has become the first Republican presidential candidate to win since 1892.

 

The county is considered the most Hispanic in America with around 97 percent of its population identifying as such, according to TexasCounties.net 2020 data.

 

Trump won the county with 57.7 percent of the vote, over Harris' 41.8 percent, according to the University of Houston's tracker of statewide races. This result is as of Wednesday, with 99 percent of the vote counted.

 

Newsweek has contacted teams for Trump and Harris, via email outside of working hours, for comment.

 

In 2020, President Joe Biden won the county with 52 percent of the vote and in 2016, Hillary Clinton won with 79 percent of the vote.

 

The flip comes after the CEO of the Latino Donor Collaborative, Ana Valdez, previously told Newsweek Latino voters could be pushed away by controversial "garbage" comments made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at Trump's Madison Square Garden rally.

 

Hinchcliffe caused controversy for the Trump campaign after he branded Puerto Rico a "floating island of garbage" and said Latinos "love making babies." In response to the comments from the comedian, Trump senior adviser Danielle Alvarez said the "joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign."

 

Asked why Latino voters still back Trump, Valdez told Newsweek: "Trump's campaign has effectively reached very conservative niches of the Latinos community, but beyond that, many feel disillusioned by both parties.

 

"The lack of investment in meaningful engagement by Democrats has made it easier for Republicans to appeal to Latinos frustrated by unfulfilled promises. Latinos aren't loyal to any partyโ€”they're loyal to those who recognize their needs and show respect."

 

Steven Crowder was among conservative commentators to celebrate Trump's win in the longtime blue county, declaring it on his show Louder With Crowder.

 

Other significant county wins include Carlton County, Minnesota, where Trump is the first Republican presidential candidate to win since 1928, and Miami-Dade, a previously blue bastion in the now solidly red state of Florida.

Philippines Confident Trump Will Restore South China Sea Security

MANILA (Reuters) โ€“ The Philippines expects U.S. policy in the Indo-Pacific and support for its treaty ally amid South China Sea tensions to remain steady under President Donald Trump, driven by bipartisan resolve in Washington, its ambassador to the U.S. said on Thursday.

 

Both Democrats and Republicans prioritize countering Chinaโ€™s influence, including in the South China Sea, Jose Manuel Romualdez said, suggesting that military cooperation, economic ties and security commitments with the Philippines will continue.

 

โ€œIt is in their interest that the Indo-Pacific region remains free, peaceful and stable, especially given the economic part of it, with trillions of dollars passing through the South China Sea,โ€ Romualdez told Reuters in an interview.

 

U.S.-Philippine security engagements have deepened under President Joe Biden and Philippine counterpart Ferdinand Marcos Jr, with both leaders keen to counter what they see as Chinaโ€™s aggressive actions in the South China Sea and near Taiwan.

 

Marcos said in a congratulatory message after Trumpโ€™s victory: โ€œI am hopeful that this unshakeable alliance, tested in war and peace, will be a force of good that will blaze a path of prosperity and amity, in the region, and in both sides of the Pacific.โ€

 

Under Marcos, the Philippines has increased the number of its bases accessible to U.S. forces to nine from five, some facing the South China Sea, where China has built artificial islands equipped with runways and missile systems.

 

The U.S. has proposed $128 million for infrastructure improvements at those bases, in addition to a $500 million pledge for the Philippine military and coastguard.

Romualdez expressed confidence that these commitments, including joint U.S.-Philippine maritime exercises that began last year, would continue under Trump.

 

โ€œWe have very strong bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress where the money comes from. Every single one of our friends in the Republican side has signified their concern and strong support for whatever weโ€™re doing right now in relation to the challenges we face with China today,โ€ Romualdez said.

 

He suggested potential changes under Trump would be โ€œminimalโ€ and could even be favorable.

 

During Trumpโ€™s previous term, the U.S. dispelled any doubts about its defense commitments when then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo assured Manila in 2019 that Washington would defend its ally if attacked in the South China Sea, reinforcing the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty.

 

Beijing claims much of the South China Sea, where about $3 trillion in ship-borne trade passes annually, with the area becoming a flashpoint for Chinese and U.S. tensions around naval operations. There have been recent clashes over territorial claims between China and the Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia.

 

Romualdez emphasized Manilaโ€™s intent to manage disputes peacefully, and โ€œwill continue to dialog with China as long as itโ€™s not detrimental to our interests.โ€

A candidate to head Donald Trump's Justice Department threatened New York Attorney General Letitia James that he would put her 'fat a** in prison' if she continues her prosecution of the president-elect.

 

Mike Davis - a controversial right-wing lawyer and commentator - told journalist Benny Johnson he was ready to go to war for Trump against enemies like James who may use 'lawfare' against him.

 

James signaled on Wednesday she is not going to back down on her probes and lawsuits against Donald Trump as she vowed to fight against any potential 'revenge or retribution' from the former president.
