Counting. A very long time ago we decided that we could understand our world by counting things in discrete increments (digitization). It works for a very large portion of the observable universe, relative to our individual perspective when we imagine ourselves as discrete elements. However, there is a point where counting breaks down entirely and our ability to understand the world which we observe goes haywire. In quantum physics things just stop making sense to us, and attempts to define smaller and smaller portions of the elements we are familiar with have spawned a seemingly endless multitude of finer details.
