25 million people in California face ‘life-threatening’ fire warning

 

Powerful winds that fueled fast-moving wildfires across Southern California this week are expected to pick up momentum on Thursday –– worsening conditions for firefighters who are already battling limited visibility to save lives.

 

The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag warning until 6 p.m. Thursday – which is used to describe “extreme and life-threatening fire behavior.” The warning is expected to affect 25 million people in Southern California and the greater San Francisco Bay area.

 

Earlier this week, forecasters warned conditions appear concerningly similar to those responsible for “some of the worst fires in Southern California history.”

 

All schools in Ventura County, northwest of Los Angeles, have been closed through Friday due to the fires.

 

Here’s the latest:

 

Ventura County’s Mountain Fire expanded in size on Wednesday after powerful Santa Ana winds came into contact with very dry air. The blaze is now moving at a “dangerous rate of spread,” Ventura County Fire Chief Dustin Gardner said at a news conference Wednesday, burning agricultural fields and hedgerows in the area.

 

At least 800 firefighters and 58 fire engines have been deployed to contain the Mountain Fire on South Mountain. It has been unsafe for helicopters to operate, Fire Captain Trevor Johnson said in a news conference.

 

Footage obtained by CNN from the town of Camarillo Hills shows orange embers searing through trees and homes late Wednesday, with structures barely recognizable and many burned to the ground.

 

Officials haven’t determined the number of structures that have been damaged. In a statement announcing Federal Emergency Management Agency support for fire rescuers, California Gov. Gavin Newsom estimated roughly 3,500 homes, structures, and businesses have been affected by the Mountain Fire.

 

At least two people have been transported to the hospital with possible smoke inhalation, fire officials said.

 

As of Thursday morning, California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection estimated the Mountain Fire has burned at 14,148 acres with 0% containment. More than 14,000 people remain under evacuation orders, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.

Germany’s governing coalition has collapsed after disagreements over the country’s weak economy led Chancellor Olaf Scholz to sack his finance minister.

Christian Lindner’s dismissal prompted him to withdraw his Free Democrats Party (FDP) from a coalition with Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), leaving Scholz in a minority government with the Green Party.

Scholz said he would now call a confidence vote for January 15, which, if he lost, could allow elections to be held by the end of March next year – six months earlier than the elections planned for September 2025.

Germany now faces turmoil at a time of broader uncertainty. THE HISTORY OF PORN

So how did we get here?

 

It seems that it started, surprisingly, in the infamously repressed context of 18th and 19th century England. In an era famous for being scandalized at the sight of women’s bare ankles, the pornographic novel flourished. The first and most famous of these is John Cleland’s Fanny Hill, published in 1748. Full of extremely graphic sex scenes, it scandalized the public, was quickly banned, and was obviously a huge success. By 1837, when Queen Victoria took the throne, there was a bustling pornographic book industry, with upwards of 50 smut shops on Bookseller’s Row in London.

 

Once photography and videography were invented, pornographers were among the first to get in on the new technology: the first pornographic film was made by the Frenchmen Eugène Pirou and Albert Kirchner in 1896. However, despite growing in popularity, pornography continued to be widely viewed as something disgusting and sinful, and was enjoyed only in secret. Adding to this was the fact that publishing or distributing pornography was illegal in most countries.

 

For it to even begin to reach the cultural acceptance it enjoys today, pornography had to wait until the 1950s and the advent of the mainstream porn magazine, especially Playboy.

 

The magazine was first released in December 1953 and was an immediate success. By 1959, Playboy had a circulation of over one million subscribers. It sold an image to the readers of themselves as “Playboys” — men who were rich, sophisticated, and most importantly, not tied down by any one woman.

 

This idea was a direct rebellion against the Leave It To Beaver, three-kids-two-cars-and-a-house-in-the-suburbs, family-centric culture of the 1950s, and it was led by men who felt that their prospects for a fulfilling life were being curtailed by women, especially their wives.

 

Instead of being tied down and restricted, the ideal Playboy was the ultimate consumer. He had the best of everything: scotch, watches, cars, clothes, and of course, women. Hugh Hefner himself, the founder of Playboy, said that “Playboy is a combination of sex…and status.”

 

It’s important to note that, even at this early juncture, the rise of pornography was inextricably linked to an idea of women which viewed them as a burden to be cast off, or at best, nothing more than another product to be consumed.

 

Hard on the heels of Playboy came Penthouse and Hustler, two magazines that both competed with and capitalized on Playboy’s success. These magazines, especially Hustler, pushed the limits of what could be shown in a mainstream magazine. The story of how Playboy, Penthouse, and Hustler competed to outsell and out-sleaze the other is a long one, and there isn’t enough space to tell it here, but the long and short of it is that, as Gail Dines says in Pornland, “by the time the Internet was introduced into homes, the culture had been well-groomed to accept pornography as a part of everyday life rather than as an industry that produces a system of images that debase and dehumanize women and men.”

 

In the nascent days of the web, porn was (unsurprisingly) one of the first things to be shared, and as the web has grown, porn has grown right alongside it. Recently, one of the internet’s biggest porn sites even put up an ad in Times Square.

 

The story of porn’s explosive growth ought not to come as a surprise: we are a sinful people and will continue to seek new ways to satisfy our selfishness. Nonetheless, it is amazing to see how far porn has come since the days of the papyrus pornographers, or even of Fanny Hill.

 

We now live in a culture where, far from being scandalous, porn is seen by many as simply a normal part of life, or at worst, a slightly distasteful distraction. Porn stars are becoming mainstream celebrities, and movies like 50 Shades of Grey are bringing violent and exploitative porn-sex right onto the big screen.

Space Communications kicks off at SAASST

Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah (UoS), the University in collaboration with the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Science (AUASS) and the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organisation (APSCO), organised an international symposium on developments in space communications, themed “The Regional Balance and Challenges.”

 

This two-day event, supported by the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Science, and Technology (SAASST) and the Inter-Islamic Network on Space Science and Technology (ISNET), aims to improve the usage of space resources in the Asia-Pacific region and foster a common understanding of space communications among the Member States.

The symposium featured a series of scientific sessions discussing over 25 research papers and included eight training workshops led by a group of experts, researchers, and specialists in astronomy and space sciences.

 

The sessions of the symposium covered various topics, including the applications of artificial intelligence in space communication, space law, Arab space cooperation, and the security risks and vulnerabilities of nano-satellite communication systems.

Additionally, the symposium addressed the expansion of international cooperation to develop space communications, the role of AUASS in promoting education and scientific research in space and astronomy, trends in the global satellite communications market and technology, as well as the competitive aspects of space communication and their impact on future telecommunications regulations.

 

Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah and Director-General of SAASST, welcomed the distinguished guests and participants, expressing his deep gratitude and appreciation to H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, for his continuous support and guidance.

 

He emphasised that this symposium serves as a source of inspiration and opens new avenues for collaboration in the fields of space sciences, communications, and technology, with participation from more than 15 countries, including representatives from the National Space Science Authority in the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Emirates Space Agency, and the UAE Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority.

 

He also noted that the University of Sharjah is committed to educating the new generation in the fields of astronomy and space sciences by offering a range of academic programs, such as the Master of Science in Astronomy and Space Sciences, the Master in Air and Space Law, and, in the near future, a PhD programme in Space Science and Technology.

 

Xu Yansong, Director-General of APSCO, added, “In our increasingly interconnected world, effective space communication systems are essential for fostering international collaboration, enhancing scientific research, and bridging the digital divide.

This symposium aims to provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge, expertise, collaboration, and innovation.

By highlighting successful regional initiatives that can serve as models for others, engaging in discussions, sharing insights, and exploring potential collaborations, we can forge partnerships that promote the greater good of humanity.”

 

Dr. Awni Al-Khasawneh, Secretary-General of AUASS, highlighted that the forum began with a two-day preliminary short training course on “Frequency and Orbital Elements in Satellite Design (ITU Regulations and International Standards),” which focused on enhancing practical skills and knowledge on various topics related to space communications.

He further explained that AUASS is committed to training Arab professionals by organising such events and conferences aimed at advancing astronomy and space sciences in the Arab region.

 

During the symposium, participants had the opportunity to watch a special show at the Sharjah Planetarium, which addressed the contribution of technology to improving space communication and the role of satellites in this field.

They also enjoyed stargazing and interactive telescope activities, allowing them to explore the stars and planets, further enriching their experience.

These activities are part of SAASST’s efforts to promote scientific culture. The symposium was concluded with the honouring of participants in the scientific sessions.

SpaceX's Dragon is about to do something to the ISS it's never done before

SpaceX will boost the space station for the first time Friday (Nov. 8), as the company prepares to eventually kill the orbiting complex.

A Dragon cargo spacecraft docked to the International Space Station (ISS) will fire its engines for 12.5 minutes on Friday (Nov. 8), NASA officials said at a press conference Monday (Nov. 4).

Other spacecraft have done this before, but it will be a first for a SpaceX capsule — and an important precursor to a bigger Dragon vehicle that will one day drive the ISS to its demise.

 

"The data that we're going to collect from this reboost and attitude control demonstration will be very helpful … and this data is going to lead to future capability, mainly the U.S deorbit vehicle," Jared Metter, director of flight reliability at SpaceX, told reporters at the livestreamed teleconference.

In July, SpaceX was tasked as the company to deorbit the ISS no earlier than 2030, once new commercial space stations are ready to step in for the ageing complex.

SpaceX will use a monster Dragon for the effort, so the planned ISS reboost using the current generation of Dragon will be useful.

 

The ISS is in low Earth orbit, roughly 250 miles (400 km) above our planet. Stray molecules of Earth's atmosphere combine to drag the six-bedroom complex down over time, making it necessary to use spacecraft to "reboost" or push the space station to a higher altitude.

Traditionally, Russian Soyuz spacecraft have fulfilled that reboost capability, but things are changing rapidly.

Russia remains a partner in the ISS after its unsanctioned invasion of Ukraine in 2022; even though most other international space agreements ruptured, the ISS is a policy project and cannot operate as independent bits, NASA has emphasized.

 

Russia plans to forge ahead with its own space station no earlier than 2028, which so far is before the rest of the ISS partnership's commitments cease in 2030.

Should Russia pull away, this means that other vehicles will need to step in for Soyuz. NASA already tested boosting with a Northrop Grumman Cygnus cargo craft in 2022. Now it's SpaceX's turn.

 

"It's a good demonstration," Metter said of the reboost. He did not immediately have the expected delta v, or the impulse per unit of spacecraft mass that the maneuver would impart, but emphasized the duration would be enough to "gather a lot of data" for the U.S. deorbit vehicle.

SpaceX's historic push of the ISS will take place in the wake of several company hardware issues, which NASA and the company say are unrelated. These have led to problems during Falcon 9 rocket launches and landings, along with a Dragon splashdown, in recent weeks.

All problems were resolved quickly with no impact to crew or public safety, and NASA officials expressed confidence in SpaceX's capabilities after working alongside the company to scrutinize its performance.

 

"We work very closely with SpaceX on everything that we do relative to these Dragon launches.

They share data with us very freely, and we work through all the issues jointly," Bill Spetch, operations and integration manager of NASA's ISS program, told reporters at the Monday teleconference.

"We obviously always maintain a top priority on the safety of the vehicles coming to ISS, and so that really hasn't changed for us," he added.

 

The Falcon 9 rocket, which is the most prolific and successful booster in history, had three launch issues between mid-July and late September.

The first issue on July 11 saw 20 SpaceX Starlink Internet satellites lost after an upper-stage propellant leak.

Falcon 9 returned to flight two weeks later after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which oversees regulatory activities in launches, approved SpaceX's plan.

 

On Aug. 28, Falcon 9 experienced a second issue; its first stage did not land as designed after a Starlink launch that was otherwise successful.

SpaceX returned to flight three days later, but on Sept. 28, Falcon 9 was grounded for a third time after an upper stage issue when it was launching the Crew-9 astronaut ISS mission for NASA.

The rocket was once again kept on Earth for two weeks, save for an FAA-granted exception to launch Europe's Hera asteroid-inspection probe on Oct. 7.

Falcon 9 returned to flight Oct. 11 and has launched successfully several times in recent weeks.

The federal agency responsible for implementing a military draft, should the need arise, reposted a vulgar tweet Wednesday suggesting that the US is on a course reminiscent of Nazi Germany.

“For all you stupid f—s out there that still believe military service will be voluntary. Remember Germany 1936,” read an X post shared by the Selective Service System.

The tweet was initially posted by an X user going by “SloJoe,” whose profile picture includes a photo of the late general and secretary of state Colin Powell.

The post appears to be referring to Adolf Hitler’s decision to reintroduce military conscription in Nazi Germany, in violation of the Treaty of Versailles, prior to his occupation of the Rhineland in 1936.

Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, boosted comparisons of President-elect Donald Trump and Hitler in the final weeks of the 2024 presidential campaign.

The Selective Service System did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.

The reposted tweet remained on the SSS’s X account for over an hour, even after it was flagged by a CBS News reporter and other users on the social media platform.

“What’s going on with the @SSS_gov (Selective Service) X account?” reporter Jim LaPorta wrote on X.

“Why is the official selective service account retweeting this???” another puzzled X user tweeted.

US law requires nearly all men between the ages of 18 and 25 to register with the Selective Service System, which maintains the nation’s draft databases.

In June, Trump dismissed the notion that he would push for mandatory military service in a second White House term.

Trump, 78, called the idea of compulsory military service a “ridiculous idea” in response to a Washington Post report that some former administration officials and Republican lawmakers see a national service mandate as a “remedy” to a decline in military recruiting numbers.

“The Story is completely untrue. In fact, I never even thought of that idea,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Venus' 'missing' giant impact craters may be hiding in plain sight

Impact features on Venus may have been staring us in the face all along

That's the message from a team of planetary scientists, who have explained Venus' apparent dearth of large craters by discovering that impacts could have produced the mysterious "tesserae" formations on the Venusian surface.

 

Tesserae are large — sometimes continent-size — expanses of terrain that have been deformed and covered with wrinkle ridges, which make the landforms look like sheets of corrugated iron.

They are formed by lava welling up to the surface, where it cools and hardens, while denser material left in the mantle below a tessera forms a plateau made from a substance called residuum.

Sometimes that residuum can be swept away by the flowing mantle around it, allowing the tessera to sink back down to surface level.

Now, a team of planetary scientists consisting of Ivan López at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, Evan Bjonnes of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and Vicki Hansen of Arizona's Planetary Science Institute, has connected these tesserae regions with impacts.

 

In searching for craters on Venus, "We had been looking for big holes in the ground," Hansen said in a statement. And indeed, about 1,000 craters on Venus are already known.

However, compared to the huge volumes of craters, particularly large craters, on Mercury, the moon and Mars, craters on Venus appear to be scarce, with none over 300 kilometers (186 miles) wide.

This could be just because we haven't recognized them, according to Hansen.

"Who would have thought flat, low-lying terrain or a big plateau is what an impact crater would look like on Venus?"

 

Venus has experienced a very different history compared to the other planets.

Episodes of global volcanism have eradicated large swathes of the surface as recently as half a billion years ago, removing evidence of many impact sites. Or so we had thought.

 

The team focused on a 1,500-km-wide (900 miles) Venusian tessera called Haastte-baad, and applied modeling to radar maps of the tessera (we can't see Venus' surface features directly because of the planet's thick, obscuring atmosphere) to try and better understand how it formed, factoring in how conditions on Venus were different in the distant past.

In particular, Venus' crust, called the lithosphere, was much thinner then than it is today.

On modern Venus, the lithosphere is a chunky 112 km (70 miles) thick, but billions of years ago, when the interior of Venus was hotter, the solid lithosphere was only about 10 km (6 miles) thick.

 

The modeling shows that, because of the thin lithosphere, a large asteroid impact could relatively easily punch through the crust and into the mantle below, allowing lava to flood upward and pool in the resulting crater, forming, in this case, the Haastte-baad tessera.

The residuum plateau has since been washed away by the convective flow of the mantle below Haastte-baad, causing the tessera's elevation to drop back down.

Hansen likens the tessera-forming process to "pea soup with a scum forming on top."

 

However, that's not the end of the story. Haastte-baad also features distinctive concentric rings that are somewhat reminiscent of some of the craters on the surfaces of the icy moons of Jupiter.

These rings form when an object impacts a surface with a harder crust and a softer layer below.

On the Galilean moons of Jupiter, the hard crust is the thick ice, and the softer layer is an ocean below, and the rings are ripples frozen in place.

 

Here's where things become really interesting, because the Haastte-baad rings imply a second impact, not onto ice and water, but onto a harder crust and a pool of lava that still filled the impact basin below.

Modeling by the team suggests that this second asteroid had a diameter of about 70 km (45 miles).

Two impacts in the same spot is perhaps not so unusual — there are many examples of other double impacts in the solar system, including on Earth — and Haastte-baad's size makes for a good target.

 

The modeling suggests that this all happened sometime between 1.5 and 4 billion years ago; we're fortunate that Haastte-baad is in one of the rare regions of Venus that hasn't since been covered in lava during a global eruption.

Whether all tesserae on Venus are impact features remains to be seen, but planetary scientists will be paying more attention to them now to be sure, because of how they can be windows into Venus' distant past.

"If this is really an impact structure, it would be Venus' oldest and largest, giving us a rare glimpse into Venus' past and informing early planet processes," concluded Hansen.

U.S. Space Command announced Nov. 6 it is expanding its commercial intelligence-sharing initiative, adding five new companies to a program that helps coordinate responses to space threats and satellite anomalies.

The Commercial Integration Cell (CIC), established in 2015, will now include Earth observation company Blacksky, space intelligence contractor Kratos, space tracking firm LeoLabs, radar satellite operator Iceye and satellite communications provider Telesat.

 

Radio-frequency satellite data provider Hawkeye 360 and space tracking specialist Exoanalytic Solutions are expected to join in the coming weeks.

Longstanding CIC members include Eutelsat America, Hughes Network Systems, Intelsat General Communications, Iridium Communications, Maxar Technologies, SES Government Solutions, SpaceX, Viasat, and XTAR.

Speaking at a Mitchell Institute event, Lt. Gen. Douglas Schiess, commander of U.S. Space Forces-Space, said the addition of new members to the CIC reflects the growing importance of commercial space capabilities in military operations.

 

U.S. Space Forces-Space is a component field command under U.S. Space Command.

CIC members previously were primarily communications and imaging satellite operators, but new members now include space domain awareness specialists.

The CIC helps to ensure that military and private sector partners are aware of threats as they unfold, said Schiess.

 

The cell operates from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Members must have Department of Defense contracts and cleared personnel who can participate in sensitive intelligence discussions.

Companies sign non-disclosure agreements to protect proprietary information shared within the group.

 

Schiess said the value of such collaboration was demonstrated in February 2022, when satellite operator Viasat quickly alerted CIC members after detecting a Russian cyberattack on its network that disrupted internet service across Europe, including in Ukraine at the onset of Russia’s invasion.

More recently, the program proved crucial when an Intelsat satellite experienced an unexpected breakup in orbit.

The company’s prompt notification through the CIC enabled U.S. Space Command to quickly issue a public alert about potential debris risks to other spacecraft.

As votes continue to be counted, Donald Trump’s lead feels so massive that it’s hard to see how Kamala Harris didn’t significantly underperform the Biden Benchmark of 2020. She didn’t just blow it; she blew it bigly.

In 2020, there were 81+ million votes cast for Biden and 74+ million cast for Trump — a grand total of over 155 million votes. Currently, there’s about 138 million total votes counted for the 2024 cycle. Trump is less than 3 million short of his 2020 benchmark, meaning the bulk of the almost 20 million vote deficit is coming from the Harris camp. Of course, votes in some of the big blue states will continue to trickle in for days (or weeks?!) after the fact, and Harris’ final count will continue to rise. But this is still a drastic difference for the morning after; where the hell did all these Biden loyalists go?

The West Coast is most glaring: Harris is over 800,000 votes short of 2020 numbers in Washington (64% reporting); 400,000 votes short in Oregon (73% reporting); 500,000 votes short in Colorado (76% reporting); and a whopping 5.5 million votes short in California (58% reporting). This will likely continue to narrow. But take California, where the split is 57% to 40% Harris. If she stays on the same trajectory, that will still put her almost 2 million shy of Biden’s 11+ million votes in the state. Even if she ramps it up to Biden’s 63% to 34%, that’s only 10.3 million votes for Harris.

Yet even states with high reporting still show Harris significantly behind. At 99% reporting, Harris is about 450,000 votes shy of Biden in Texas. At 94% reporting, she’s down almost 1 million votes in New York. She’s down about 650,000 votes in Illinois with 91% of the vote in, and down roughly the same in Florida with 99% reporting.

Across the Sunbelt states of Arizona (64% reporting), Louisiana (99% reporting), Mississippi (73% reporting), Alabama (99% reporting) and Georgia (99% reporting), she’s down roughly another 600,000 votes combined.

Heading up to the north, Harris trails in Maryland (82% reporting) by an additional 500,000 votes. She’s down about 200,000 votes in Virginia (99% reporting), but that has nothing on New Jersey. At 90% reporting, Harris is about 500,00 votes shy of Biden in the state. At 93% reporting, Harris is about 300,000 votes down in deep blue Massachusetts, and another 200,000 shy in Connecticut (85% reporting). In Ohio (96% reporting), she’s down roughly another 200,00 thousand votes.

There are smaller deficits elsewhere, but add it all together, and you’ll get pretty close to the total margin from 2020. Remember, the numbers are going to continue narrowing, but any way you cut it: this is a bad, bad night for Harris.

Trump's victory means old tweets and statements are coming back to haunt Anthony Albanese

The wind was whipping around the prime minister's Parliament House courtyard as Anthony Albanese glanced down to check the time.

 

Having called a press conference to announce children under 16 would be banned from social media, it was as if his mind was elsewhere.

 

Within the hour he'd be on the phone with Donald Trump, a man he'd years earlier described as scaring "the shit out of me".

 

Making sharp comments can often feel good in the moment, but they don't come without consequences.

 

As Albanese was addressing the media in Canberra,his prime ministerial predecessor Kevin Rudd was on the other side of the globe frantically deleting social media posts.

 

Years earlier Rudd had let rip about Trump in a series of tweets, the highlights of which including calling him "the most destructive president in history", "a traitor to the West" and a man who "drags America and democracy through the mud".

 

The tweets remained online as Rudd became Australia's ambassador to the US, quietly ticking down like a time bomb edging ever closer to exploding as Trump re-sought the presidency.

 

"Out of respect for the office of President of the United States, and following the election of President Trump, Ambassador Rudd has now removed these past commentariesfrom his personal website and social media channels," Rudd's private office said in a statement.

 

"This has been done to eliminate the possibility of suchcomments being misconstruedas reflecting his positions as Ambassador and, by extension, the views of the Australian Government."

 

Though the tweets might have gone, their consequences haven't. Try as Rudd might to have ingratiated himself with Trump's inner circle, some ofTrump's closest political allies have made no secret of their thoughts on Australia's ambassador.

 

"He is trying to worm his way back into the good graces. He's been very critical of president Trump in the past," Steve Bannon offered earlier this year.

 

There would be no shortage of irony in Rudd losing his job because of comments about a man for whom shame and consequences never seem to scathe his pursuits.

 

Albanese and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong fell over themselves to reinforce their support for Rudd staying in Washington, insisting, as Wong did, that the Australian-US alliance was "bigger than the past comments of any one individual".

 

At his first national Labor conference as opposition leader, Rudd famously offered this introduction: "My name is Kevin, I'm from Queensland and I'm here to help."

 

If he's unable to open doors in Trump's America, his ability to helpas ambassador will have the clock ticking on his ability to stay in that job.

 

'We were f*d': The varied reactions to Trump's victory

 

As the results started rolling in on Wednesday, senators were locked away in their thrice-a-year grilling of ministers and public servants.

 

Try as they might to focus on senate estimates, eyes were firmly locked on the far-away election.

 

For Labor politicians, there was a churning feeling in their stomachs as what they had hoped wouldn't happen turned likely.

 

Aside from what it would mean for Australia-US relations, the AUKUS nuclear submarine pact and trade, some were trying to come to terms with what the result said about the world.

 

Repulsed with what they were seeing, some quietly did the maths that voters will twice determine the federal government here before Trump's second term ends.

 

Across the aisle and away from the senate estimates hearing rooms, reports emerged of celebrations happening behind closed Liberal MP doors.

 

Not everyone in the party was celebrating though. "We were f****d either way," one Liberal remarked.

 

While certainly no fans of Democrat Kamala Harris, seniorLiberal hardheads are anxious that Trump's victory will reignite appetites for a debate on abortionwithin their party.

 

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton tried to get ahead of it when he addressed his party on Tuesday. He warned the debate over abortion in Queensland cost the LNP votes at the recent election and didn't need to be readdressed federally.

Following his landslide victory Tuesday over Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump has been huddling with donors, family members, and advisers at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, the Washington Examiner reported.

 

Trump and his transition advisers have begun the process of vetting candidates to populate both his Cabinet and broader administration, Politico reported.

 

Trump's transition is led by his sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick, former Trump Small Business Administration Administrator Linda McMahon, former Democrat Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, and former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

 

Lutnick has been pulling names and resumes from Wall Street titans such as Stephen Schwarzman, Chuck Schwab, and Ross Perot Jr. to help scout for top positions, according to Politico.

 

With Republicans winning control of the Senate, the president-elect likely will have a fairly smooth path in confirming his Cabinet selections.

 

The Examiner reported senators already were talking with the campaign about holding hearings once the new Congress is sworn in Jan. 3, nearly 2½ weeks before Trump is inaugurated.

 

"As soon as possible, the Senate will start holding hearings for the Cabinet and other officials," Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., wrote in a Daily Caller opinion column."In 2017, we saw unprecedented obstruction by Democrats of President Trump's nominees. This must not happen again."

 

Kennedy Jr. (health and human services), North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (interior or energy secretary), and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., (secretary of state) have been widely reported as possible Cabinet members.

 

Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson and former Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos are being considered for a return their respective office, Fox News reported. Also, former CIA Director and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo could be defense secretary.

 

Billionaire hedge fund investor John Paulson and economic adviser Scott Bessent are contenders for treasury secretary, The Washington Post reported.

 

Also, campaign adviser Susie Wiles and Brooke Rollins, who is part of a Trump-aligned outside group, are possibilities for chief of staff, the Post added.

 

The outlet added Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., and former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe have been discussed for attorney general.

 

Kennedy Jr. and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have suggested that Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo be considered for HHS secretary. Wednesday on X, DeSantis posted Ladapo's photo and wrote, "Retweet if you'd like to see this man — Dr. Joseph Ladapo — serve as the Secretary of HHS in the new Trump administration. cc: @FLSurgeonGen."

 

Former Trump national security adviser Robert O'Brien, at a recent luncheon, mentioned Sens. Rubio and Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., and former acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell as possibilities for secretary of state, and Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., as a possibility for secretary of defense, a Capitol staffer told Politico.

 

CNN reported Trump still had not signed memoranda of understanding with both the General Services Administration – which offers access to office space, communications, equipment, and IT support during the transition between administrations – and the White House, which provides access to agencies, including personnel, facilities, and documents.

Ok so this just got very explosive. A Kamala campaign staffer who saw these posts called me just now and said there is a massive scandal here worthy of an audit.

 

The $20 million debt thing is real. Rob Flaherty, this staffer said, is currently shopping around the Kamala fundraising email list to anyone who wants it to try to raise the money back. This includes other campaigns and outside groups.

 

Flaherty is the deputy campaign manager and reports to Jen O’Malley Dillon.

What’s more, this Kamala campaign staffer said several people who were working for the Kamala Harris for President campaign are still awaiting several overdue payments they were promised for their work. IE, they didn’t pay the staff.

US military judge reinstates 9/11 mastermind plea deal

A US military judge has reinstated plea agreements for 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and two other defendants, an official said Thursday, three months after the deals were scrapped by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

The agreements — which are understood to take the death penalty off the table — had triggered anger among some relatives of victims of the 2001 attacks, and Austin has said that both they and the American public deserved to see the defendants stand trial.

“I can confirm that the military judge has ruled that the pretrial agreements for the three accused are valid and enforceable,” the US official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The prosecution has the opportunity to appeal Wednesday’s ruling, but it was not immediately clear if they would do so.

Pentagon spokesman Major General Pat Ryder said in a statement that “we are reviewing the decision and don’t have anything further at this time.”

The plea deals with Mohammed and two alleged accomplices — Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi — were announced in late July.

The decision appeared to have moved their long-running cases toward resolution after years of being bogged down in pre-trial maneuverings while the defendants remained held at the Guantanamo Bay military base in Cuba.

But Austin withdrew the agreements two days after they were announced, saying the decision should be his given its significance.

He subsequently told journalists that “the families of the victims, our service members and the American public deserve the opportunity to see military commission trials carried out in this case.”

Much of the legal jousting surrounding the men’s cases has focused on whether they could be tried fairly after having undergone methodical torture at the hands of the CIA in the years after 9/11 — a thorny issue that the plea agreements would have avoided.

“For too long, the US has repeatedly defended its use of torture and unconstitutional military tribunals at Guantanamo Bay,” Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement on Thursday.

Romero described the plea agreements as “the only practical solution” and said Austin “stepped out of bounds” by scrapping them, adding: “As a nation, we must move forward with the plea process and a sentencing hearing that is intended to give victim family members answers to their questions.”

Mohammed was regarded as one of Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden’s most trusted and intelligent lieutenants before his March 2003 capture in Pakistan. He then spent three years in secret CIA prisons before arriving at Guantanamo in 2006.

The trained engineer — who has said he masterminded the 9/11 attacks “from A to Z” — was involved in a string of major plots against the United States, where he had attended university.

Bin Attash, a Saudi of Yemeni origin, allegedly trained two of the hijackers who carried out the September 11 attacks, and his US interrogators also said he confessed to buying the explosives and recruiting members of the team that killed 17 sailors in an attack on the USS Cole in 2000.

After the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, he took refuge in neighboring Pakistan and was captured there in 2003. He was then held in a network of secret CIA prisons.

Hawsawi is suspected of managing the financing for the 9/11 attacks. He was arrested in Pakistan on March 1, 2003, and was also held in secret prisons before being transferred to Guantanamo in 2006.

The United States used Guantanamo, an isolated naval base, to hold militants captured during the “War on Terror” that followed the September 11 attacks in a bid to keep the defendants from claiming rights under US law.

The facility held roughly 800 prisoners at its peak, but they have since slowly been repatriated to other countries.

US President Joe Biden pledged before his election to try to shut down Guantanamo, but it remains open.

At least 318 American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) backed politicians won their seats in the US elections on Tuesday, AIPAC posted on their X/Twitter.AIPAC is a pro-Israel lobbying group that vowed to spend over 100 million dollars this year in the US elections, according to The Guardian.

 

One recipient, Jewish Democrat Adam Schiff, won his senate position in California. His previous position as a representative from the house from the 30th district of California has been replaced by another AIPAC-backed democrat, Laura Friedman. AIPAC congratulated both of the winners.

 

AIPAC endorsed Wesley Bush, who won his position as House representative in Missouri District 1. He replaced 'squad member' Cori Bush, who had previously been critical of Israel in the Democratic party primaries. AIPAC spent $8.5 million on Bush's campaign, according to The Guardian.

 

Bush let out a statement thanking donors, specifically AIPAC, stating, "I want to thank our partners at AIPAC." Bush continued saying that he was "not getting across the finish line without you."

 

Josh Gottheimer was re-elected in his New Jersey house representative position from the 5th district. This is his 5th term, and he has been serving since 2017. He has received 1 million dollars of funding from Jewish agencies, according to OpenSecrets, a Nation's premier research group tracking money in US politics. The top contribution is from AIPAC, with 679,448 in the past year, according to OpenSecrets reports.

 

Other PACs involvement

While AIPAC is the most relevant political action committee for pro-Israel democracy, other Zionist political action committees also played a role, such as J Street and the Joint Action Committee for Political Affairs (JAC).

 

Jstreet is a zionist liberal advocacy group. The PAC contributed nearly $300,000 to primarily Democratic candidates, Opensecrets reports.

 

JAC is a national PAC that contributes to candidates for the US Congress who support a strong US-Israel. The PAC contributed $300,518 to federal candidates in this past election, Opensecrets reports. These contributions exclusively went to Democratic candidates.

 

The aforementioned PACS, JStreet, and JAC have almost exclusively contributed to Democratic candidates in the past election. In contrast, AIPAC has donated to both parties solely in the interest of promoting Israel and ensuring there are more pro-Israel members of Congress.

 

Private donors involvement

Apart from the PAC contributions in the US elections, private Jewish donors also have made significant contributions. Most notably, Dr. Miriam Adelson is an Israeli-American conservative mega-donor. She distributed $100 million into Adelson's super PAC in support of Donald Trump's candidacy for the presidency. She is a major funder in pro-Israel politics within the US and has been for the past decade.

Starship's Sixth Flight Test

The sixth flight test of Starship is targeted to launch as early as Monday, November 18.

The 30-minute launch window will open at 4:00 p.m. CT. As is the case with all developmental testing, the schedule is dynamic and likely to change, so be sure to check in here and stay tuned to our X account for updates.

 

Starship’s fifth flight test was a seminal moment in iterating towards a fully and rapidly reusable launch system.

On the first attempt, the Super Heavy booster successfully returned to the launch site and was caught by the chopstick arms of the launch and catch tower at Starbase.

Starship’s upper stage went on to demonstrate several improvements, resulting in a controlled entry and high accuracy splashdown at the targeted area in the Indian Ocean.

 

The next Starship flight test aims to expand the envelope on ship and booster capabilities and get closer to bringing reuse of the entire system online.

Objectives include the booster once again returning to the launch site for catch, reigniting a ship Raptor engine while in space, and testing a suite of heatshield experiments and maneuvering changes for ship reentry and descent over the Indian Ocean.

 

The success of the first catch attempt demonstrated the design feasibility while providing valuable data to continue improving hardware and software performance.

Hardware upgrades for this flight add additional redundancy to booster propulsion systems, increase structural strength at key areas, and shorten the timeline to offload propellants from the booster following a successful catch.

Mission designers also updated software controls and commit criteria for the booster’s launch and return.

 

Analogous to the fifth flight test, distinct vehicle and pad criteria must be met prior to a return and catch of the Super Heavy booster, which will require healthy systems on the booster and tower and a final manual command from the mission’s Flight Director.

If this command is not sent prior to the completion of the boostback burn, or if automated health checks show unacceptable conditions with Super Heavy or the tower, the booster will default to a trajectory that takes it to a landing burn and soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.

We accept no compromises when it comes to ensuring the safety of the public and our team, and the return will only take place if conditions are right.

 

The returning booster will slow down from supersonic speeds, resulting in audible sonic booms in the area around the landing zone.

Generally, the only impact to those in the surrounding area of a sonic boom is the brief thunder-like noise with variables like weather and distance from the return site determining the magnitude experienced by observers.

 

Starship’s upper stage will fly the same suborbital trajectory as the previous flight test, with splashdown targeted in the Indian Ocean.

An additional objective for this flight will be attempting an in-space burn using a single Raptor engine, further demonstrating the capabilities required to conduct a ship deorbit burn prior to orbital missions.

 

Several thermal protection experiments and operational changes will test the limits of Starship’s capabilities and generate flight data to inform plans for ship catch and reuse.

The flight test will assess new secondary thermal protection materials and will have entire sections of heat shield tiles removed on either side of the ship in locations being studied for catch-enabling hardware on future vehicles.

The ship also will intentionally fly at a higher angle of attack in the final phase of descent, purposefully stressing the limits of flap control to gain data on future landing profiles.

Finally, adjusting the flight’s launch window to the late afternoon at Starbase will enable the ship to reenter over the Indian Ocean in daylight, providing better conditions for visual observations.

 

Future ships, starting with the vehicle planned for seventh flight test, will fly with significant upgrades including redesigned forward flaps, larger propellant tanks, and the latest generation tiles and secondary thermal protection layers as we continue to iterate towards a fully reusable heat shield.

Learnings from this and subsequent flight tests will continue to make the entire Starship system more reliable as we close in on full and rapid reusability.
