Yep it is gambling, except the vast majority of Americans trying to save for retirement have payroll deductions that go straight into the market (via mutual) regardless of how the market is doing. It is more of a way to harvest wealth for a small group of market movers because until wagies stop throwing money into it as a supposed savings account, it will always come back. Logic of how a market is suppose to work can be overcome by systems that make a market inherently a lie.
