FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—Anonprofit drafted a plan to prosecute backers of Donald Trump under Arizona law nearly a year beforethe state’s Democrat attorney general secured 18 indictments related to Trump’s 2020 campaign.

 

One of the nonprofit’s founders is a former Obama White House staffer who authored books targeting Trump.

 

The organization, the States United Democracy Center,provided a 47-page memo to Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes on July 25, 2023.(attached)

 

The memo outlined the potential criminal case against Trump associates and made repeated references to “Trump himself” as part of what it called a criminal “false electors scheme.”

 

Mayes recently said that her prosecutionof former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, and former Arizona Republican Party Chair Kelli Ward—all among 18 Trump associatesindicated—would continue despite Trump’s election to a second term.

 

Recommendations and Results

 

The July 2023 memo from the States United Democracy Center called for bringing criminalcharges under Arizona law for forgery, tampering with public records, criminal impersonation, presentation of a false instrument for filing, fraudulent schemes and practices, and conspiracy.

 

The grand jury indictment this past April included six counts of forgery; two counts of fraudulent schemes and practices; and one count of conspiracy. Trump was named as an unindicted co-conspirator.

 

The organization’s memo singled out individuals as targets of prosecution, including Ward as well as Republican activists who were among an alternate slate of Trump electors that signed certificates in case Arizona’s election result was overturned.

 

Most, but not all, were indicted in April. But the 2023 memo went on to note “others,” including Trump and then-Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.

 

“As established in Section II of this memo, Trump campaign staff and advisers drove the scheme and propelled it forward in the key states, including Arizona,” the memo says. “Trump himself sought and obtained Ronna McDaniel’s help in furtherance of the scheme.”

 

The center’s memo called for more investigation of the “actions, intent, and knowledge” of Trump and others.

 

The memo also stressed to Mayes, Arizona’s attorney general, thatthe 2020 case was not too old to prosecute.

 

“Statutes of limitations will not provide a barrier to prosecution, so long as the prosecution is brought within the next four years,” the memo says. “Generally, for crimes classified as class 2 through class 6 felonies, the statute of limitations is seven years. … In any event, the relevant statutes of limitations will not bar a timely prosecution. Nor should concerns about timing—given that several years have elapsed since the scheme—preclude prosecution now. Thorough investigations of complex cases take time.”

 

Arizona’s previous attorney general was a Republican, and the memo notes: “In addition, the voters of the state of Arizona elected a new attorney general [Mayes] who took office in January 2023. Under these facts, the investigation has been diligent, without undue delay.”

 

Before issuing its memo, the center enthusiastically posted on the social media platform X aboutMayes’ plans to “ramping up” the investigation of the 2020 election in Arizona.

 

In August, the organization posted about one of the indicted Trump supporters who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge.

 

What Is States United Democracy Center?

 

The States United Democracy Center was established in 2020 and initially called the Voter Protection Program, according to the Capital Research Center, a Washington-based investigative think tank that monitors nonprofits.

 

The group was established in anticipation that Trump would lose the 2020 election and challenge the outcome.

 

One co-founder is Obama White House ethics counsel Norman Eisen, who Barack Obama later appointed as ambassador to the Czech Republic. Eisen was special counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during the first Trump impeachment in 2019 over Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s president.

 

A Washington Post column said Eisen was a “critical force in building the case for impeachment” in the House. Trump eventually was acquitted in the Senate.

Eisen wrote three anti-Trump books: “A Case for the American People: The United States v. Donald J. Trump” published in July 2020; “Overcoming Trumpery: How to Restore Ethics, the Rule of Law, and Democracy” in 2022; and “Trying Trump: A Guide to His First Election Interference Criminal Trial” in 2024.

 

Eisen is now a senior adviser for the States United Democracy Center.(They need to be first radical dem non profit to be investigated by the Trump DOJ in 2024)

 

In fiscal year 2022, the Hopewell Fund, a nonprofit with services managed by the liberal philanthropy consulting firm Arabella Advisors, provided $1.6 million to the States United Democracy Center, according to Cause IQ, a database of nonprofit groups, as well as the Hopewell Fund’s 990 form.

 

Nonprofit organizations in the Arabella Advisors networks have been among the largest donors to left-leaning causes in recent years.

 

The Hopewell Fund was not the original source of funding to States United for Democracy Center. The Hopewell Fund previously served as the center’s fiscal sponsor while it was waiting for tax-exempt status. The fund also facilitated charitable contributions to the center as part of that administrative role.

 

‘Cabal of Powerful People’

 

When States United was known as the Voter Protection Program, the organization was mentioned in a Time magazine article as part of “a shadow campaign” in 2020.

 

The magazine said it was part of a larger “cabal of powerful people ranging across industries and ideologies, working together behind the scenes to influence perceptions, change rules and laws, steer media coverage and control the flow of information. They were not rigging the election; they were fortifying it.”

They found their solution from Aeluma, Inc.

in Goleta, Calif. Aeluma, a semiconductor company specializing in advanced technologies for defense, aerospace, and quantum computing, has been awarded a contract by NASA to support next-generation space and aerospace applications, including free-space laser communication, autonomous navigation, and precision sensing.

 

Under the agreement, Aeluma will work with NASA to create silicon-based photonic circuits incorporating quantum dot technology.

This approach aims to enhance optical performance in demanding environments, addressing the need for precise, energy-efficient solutions in space missions and autonomous systems.

Ring Around Tabby’s Star

This Oct. 4, 2017, illustration shows a hypothetical uneven ring of dust orbiting KIC 8462852, also known as Boyajian’s Star or Tabby’s Star.

The star has experienced unusual dips in brightness over a matter of days, as well as much subtler but longer-term dimming trends.

Scientists proposed several explanations for this unexpected behavior, ranging from Tabby’s Star swallowing a planet to alien “megastructures” harvesting the star’s energy.

However, a study using NASA’s Spitzer and Swift missions as well as the Belgian AstroLAB IRIS observatory suggests that the cause of the dimming over long periods is likely an uneven dust cloud moving around the star.

More than two weeks after Election Day, the size of the Republican Party's US Senate majority has now been finalized at 53 seats, after three-term incumbent Democratic Sen. Bob Casey conceded the Pennsylvania race on Thursday.

 

Out of nearly 7 million votes cast, Republican challenger Dave McCormick a West Point grad, Gulf War vet and former CEO of hedge fund Bridgewater Associates is up by just 16,000 with 99.8% of votes counted. The tiny margin just 0.2% triggered an automatic recount that started on Monday; an announcement of the result had been expected to come next Wednesday, but Casey's concession ends the recount.

 

"This race was one of the closest in our Commonwealth’s history, decided by less than a quarter of a point," said Casey in his surrender statement. "I am grateful to the thousands of people who worked to make sure every eligible vote cast could be counted, including election officials in all 67 counties."

NASA keeps an eye on this geyser in California: It’s hiding something shocking underground

Nestled in Northern California lies a geothermal field, aptly named “The Geysers.” Spanning 45 square miles, it hides a surprising secret beneath its steaming surface.

While this field is best known as the world’s largest producer of geothermal energy, it also conceals a massive body of magma that offers clues about Earth’s inner workings.

 

Magma: The steam engine driving The Geysers’ output

Located eight miles northeast of Geyserville, The Geysers is unique in its geological structure.

It allows drillers to tap into reservoirs so fractured and heated that they release steam instead of water.

 

According to NASA, a massive blob of silica-rich magma penetrated the Earth’s crust “beneath the Coast Range” approximately 1.3 million years ago, causing gradual fracturing of surrounding rocks and forming fissures.

As water seeped into these fissures, it gave rise to hot springs, enticing indigenous populations, early colonists, tourists, and, much later, energy companies eager to capitalize on the field’s geothermal potential.

 

Currently, this steam fuels 18 on-site, turbine-driven power plants that generate up to 835 megawatts of electricity. This is enough to power several counties, as well as cities the size of San Francisco.

Overall, the turbines at The Geysers play a huge role in California’s renewable energy landscape.

 

It provides 50% of the state’s geothermal power while relying on sustainable management practices, such as injecting treated wastewater in the hot rock to reopen the fractures.

It also serves as a laboratory of sorts where scientists can study the dynamics of magma and the geothermal systems generated by it.

 

Overcoming challenges to harness The Geysers’ geothermal energy

As one of only two vapor-dominated systems in the world, The Geysers generates an impressive amount of geothermal energy.

In the deeper regions of the field, which lie more than 1.5 miles beneath the surface, temperatures can reach as high as 750 degrees Fahrenheit.

This suggests that the geothermal potential of The Geysers may be significantly larger than what we previously thought.

 

However, drillers encounter difficulties working on the rugged terrain of this field. High costs associated with drilling, which takes about 60 days per well, along with the wear on drill bits exacerbated by complex rock geology, further complicate the situation.

For example, as teams drill to depths exceeding 9,000 feet, they have to shift from mud to high-pressure air in order to combat fluid losses from steam-filled fractures.

Unfortunately, this particular technique can drastically reduce drill bit longevity, with some bits failing after just 21 feet.

 

Innovative drilling techniques are being explored to enhance efficiency

To address these challenges, drilling experts are performing ongoing tests aimed at identifying factors limiting drilling performance and enhancing drill bit durability.

The variation in fracture distribution at The Geysers complicates these operations, prompting teams to explore new materials and designs that can ensure sudden rock type changes.

This will ultimately make drilling more efficient and cost-effective in this geothermal hotspot.

 

One promising method is using a percussive hammer for drilling, which may improve penetration rates while also reducing bit damage.

Although it operates slower than rotary drilling, it helps maintain drill integrity in challenging environments.

 

For example, a modified off-the-shelf unit, powered by three compressors, effectively drilled the last 40 feet of a borehole in hard, brittle rock without drilling fluid.

Although it operated at a slow 20 feet an hour, the bit’s weight was reduced, ensuring no visible damage after inspection.

 

Ultimately, The Geysers symbolize the remarkable duality of energy generation and environmental responsibility.

By utilizing geothermal resources responsibly, we can meet energy demands while enhancing our knowledge of Earth’s structure. In turn, this balance fosters a sustainable future.

⚡️Matt Gaetz 🧵: What Actually Happened

Alright frens, now that Matt Gaetz is out of the running you’re going to hear a lot of takes on what happened and plenty of “keep your d*ck in your pants” lines too.

 

And while that’s always good advice, the story I’m about to share goes way beyond anything you could possibly imagine. So if you’re interested in the whole story, consolidated in one place, of what really happened with and to Gaetz, take a seat and let me tell you a story

Part I: The Tax Collector

This story begins in Fall 2019 in Florida, with this man: Joel Greenberg.

At the time Joel Greenberg was 2.5 years into his first term as the Tax Collector for Seminole County.

Greenberg is your classic rich kid who dinks through life lighting fires everyone else is forced to put out. Never landing hard bc daddy’s money always catches his fall. You know the type. We all do. And Joel approached his role as tax collector no different than any other.

By Fall 2019 Seminole County was awash with rumors about the federal investigation into Greenberg’s crypto scam with tax collector dollars.

These rumors inspired a local music teacher, Brian Beute, to throw his hat in the ring and challenge Greenberg in the Republican primary slated for the following year.

Despite the many advantages Greenberg held over Beute in the race (incumbency, wealth, name recognition, etc) Greenberg’s significant criminal activity as tax collector likely contributed to him becoming obsessed with destroying Beute, both publicly and privately.

So throughout late 2019 and into 2020 Greenberg rolled out a series of ever escalating smear tactics targeting Beute. They started rather typical, labeling Beute, who is from Michigan, as a carpetbagger.

But they grew increasingly viscous. He created fake Facebook profiles pretending to be Beute’s students, leaving comments on public posts trashing Beute as an awful teacher and a pervert.

Greenberg’s antics finally reached an apex when he mailed handwritten letters to the administrators at the school where Beute taught, accusing him of sexually assaulting his students.

Greenberg probably didn’t expect those letters to be taken so seriously or else he likely would’ve been a little more careful.

But alas he was not, and when the letters were turned over to the local sheriff’s office both his fingerprints and DNA were lifted from them and he was arrested on June 23, 2020 and charged by the DOJ with stalking.

At the time of his arrest, Greenberg’s phone was confiscated and searched. And… believe it or not, this is where his REAL legal troubles began.

On his cellphone (and later home computers) police found evidence of Greenberg committing damn near every crime in the book: embezzlement, drugs, prostitution, identify theft, wire fraud, crypto market manipulation…

but the silver tuna was a series of messages that occurred in the late Spring through early Fall of 2017 between Greenberg and a then 17 year old girl discussing, among other things, their many sexcapades around Florida and beyond.

Further investigation revealed that from December 2016 through 2018 Joel Greenberg was a customer on a “Sugar Daddy” website where he solicited various women for sex and escort services. This is where he met the aforementioned 17 year old.

All told, Mr. Greenberg spent over $70,000 on hookers he met on the Sugar Daddy website, much of which he paid for with his government issued AMEX card.

In August 2020 the DOJ charged Joel Greenberg with sex trafficking of a minor, identify theft and production of false identification documents, among other things.

After Ukrainian soldiers were ordered “learn not to be afraid of death” because they have “almost no chance for survival”, this report concludes, sources in the Ukrainian intelligence community told the Interfax-Ukraine agency yesterday: “The Ministry of Defense of Russia has prepared a document with a forecast of the development of the military and political situation in the world until 2045, which it is possible that, through the governments and representatives of foreign countries, it will try to convey to the new US administration”, and the Kiev Post revealed today: “The document proposes dividing Ukraine into three parts: Fully and partially occupied regions of Ukraine, which Moscow seeks to officially annex as part of Russia…The territory around Kyiv, referred to by Moscow as a “pro-Russian state entity” - a puppet state with pro-Russian authorities and Russian military presence…Western regions of Ukraine, referred to as “disputed territories” with their fate, to be determined in negotiations involving Russia, Poland, Hungary, and Romania”.

Turns out, in Florida, the office of county tax collector doesn’t just collect taxes, they also issue driver’s licenses and state IDs.

And Mr. Greenberg had taken full advantage of this privilege during his time in office.Greenberg had not only created multiple false Florida ID cards for himself, he also created a fake ID for his underage loverafter finding out that she had been lying to him about her age.

And this is where Matt Gaetz comes into the story.

From what I can gather, Gaetz and Greenberg became acquainted at some point in the first half of 2017. The first public record of them associating on a private level comes from a picture posted to X (then Twitter) on July 8, 2017 with none other than Roger Stone.

I think it’s safe to say that the two did become friends. How good a friends? That’s up for debate. But there was a relationship.

After getting arrested in June 2020, at some point Mr. Greenberg (lawyer’s?) approaches Bill Barr’s DOJ with a proposition: he claims he can provide evidence that a sitting Congressman (Gaetz) had engaged in sex acts with a minor.

Bill Barr’s DOJ then proceeds to open a secret investigation into these allegations,that remains a secret until it is leaked the next spring, on March 30, 2021 by The NY Times.

PART II: The Man In Iran

Faithful viewers of the Tucker Carlson were treated to a peak behind the DC curtain on a random Tuesday night in late March 2021.

Earlier that day The New York Times had released a bombshell story alleging that the DOJ had opened an official investigation into Gaetz over allegations he had engaged in sex with an underage girl.

Following Tucker’s opening monologue he introducedMatt Gaetz and gave him free rein to tell his side of the story. Anyone watching is unlikely to soon forget the absolute bizarre story that Gaetz proceeded to tell.

It involved a $25 million extortion threat against his father to help free an American hostage in Iran that would then be paid back with a presidential pardon for Gaetz on all these charges.

Gaetz demanded that the FBI release the tapesthey had in their possession of the recordings made by his father in interviews with his extortionist.He didn’t hesitate for a second to name the alleged extortionist: David McGee.

Said he was a former prosecutor for the Northern District of Florida who now worked at the prestigious Biggs & Lane law firm in Pensacola.

He was resolute and unafraid when talking… and yet he sounded like an absolute lunatic. I know. I was watching live. And I wasn’t the only one.

(This thread is already long enough so I’m not going to speculate on what I think, but there’s plenty out there if you want to go chasing rabbits.)

So Levinson gets kidnapped in March 2007 and his disappearance was acknowledged by George Bush in June 2007 as “concerning.”But no one from the federal government will admit that Levinson was working for the CIA.

Unbeknownst to anyone at the time,from 2009-2011 the FBI was running its own covert operation to get their retired agent backand they had devised an ingenious plan to keep thewhole thing off the books:

they contracted with a Russian billionaire, Oleg Deripaska, to pay for the rescue mission ($20 million in total) in exchange for a fast tracked green cards for Deripaska and his family.

Enter: David McGee. During his time at the DOJ McGee worked an organized crime task force. That’s how he knew Bob Levinson- who specialized in Russian money laundering. McGee became a liaison between the Levinson family and Deripaska.

(Now let me just stop right here and say this whole thing is NUTS and stinks to high heavens. To make matters worse,who was the FBI point man on the Deripaska deal? Andrew McCabe. Yep. That Andrew McCabe.)

Anywho, the FBI team gets a couple proof of life videos and they have a soft arrangement in placewhen the Clinton State Department steps in and shuts the whole thing down. Something got them spooked. What that was has never been disclosed.

After 2011 Levinson is never heard from again. All along the Iranians deny any involvement in his disappearance (expected) so eventually the CIA gets desperate and ahandful of classified documents confirming Levinson’s contract with the CIA are leaked to the AP in Dec 2013.

Still, the Iranians don’t budge. This was surprising because at this point they no longer have any reason to lie. The Americans weren’t lying anymore. Time to start negotiations. But nope. The news was greeted with radio silence.

Years go by and no more pictures or videos ever arrive. And then comes the Iranian Nuclear Deal of 2016.

Unbeknownst to most, the Obama team had negotiated the release of four Americans being held in Iranin exchange for the US dropping charges against seven Iranian nationals for sanctions violations.Bob Levinson was not one of those Americans.

The American Jewish community was furious. They already saw the Iranian deal as a stab in the back to Israel. But when word broke about the prisoner exchange and Bob Levinson wasn’t on the list, many took it as a deliberate betrayal of American Jews too.

Flash forward some more, Trump takes office, cancels the Nuclear Deal; Christine Levinson sues Iran in US Courts and is awarded a $1.2 billion judgement in January 2020, and in March 2020 the US government declares Bob Levinson legally dead. Case closed, right?

 

Wrong.

At some point in Summer2020 a former Air Force intelligence officer named Bob Kent claims to have receivednews from his “network in Iraq” alleging thatBob Levinson was still alive. Kent even claims he received pictures to prove it.

So Kent contacts David McGee who then tells Kent about the last privately funded search and rescue for Levinson andthat’s when Kent hatches the plan to rope Don Gaetz into paying for this one.

Now I know what you’re all wondering:how did these men know about the Matt Gaetz investigation?

To my knowledge that has never been revealed. If I had to guess, I’d say someone in the DOJ or FBI leaked that info to McGee who then told Kent about it when he was contacted. But that’s still only have the answer.

(This is the part of the story where I start spiraling. I start wondering just how long this plan had been in the works. Nothing adds up.But for now, I’ll spare you my suspicions and stick to what I know.)

Part III: The Grand Plan

It was March 16, 2021 when Don Gaetz received the first text message from Bob Kent about his grand plan.

In exchange for Don fronting Mr. Kent’s rescue mission of Bob Levinson, unnamed agents with=powerful contacts in the Biden administration would convince the president to give Don’s son Matt a full presidential pardonon his looming sex trafficking charges.

The price: 25 million dollars. (I wish I had a picture of Don Gaetz’ face when he read that.)

Naturally Gaetz Sr. was incredulous. What in the world was this man talking about?Matt wasn’t facing any sex trafficking charges. Don called Matt who immediately told him to contact the local FBI office.

The FBI suggested that Don meet with David McGee wearing a wire and Don agreed. However,just before the meeting took place, Don requested a written acknowledgment from the FBI on the purpose of this investigation and meeting.

He was worried something he said could be used against Matt in the case they still didn’t know anything about. The FBI was reluctant at first but they eventually agreed.

The very next day The New York Times ran the leak on the DOJ’s case against Gaetz.

Going back and watching the Tucker/Gaetz interview again this week, everything he said finally made sense.The FBI had planned to use Don’s meeting with McGee against Matt.

The quasi-immunity demand from Don quashed that so they leaked the story to The NY Times andthen buried the wire tapes.

McGee and Kent denied everything. They said there was no extortion. It was a simple proposition. They accused Matt of using this to distract from his charges.

A third man was eventually charged with wire fraud in relation to case. And thenthe FBI just drops it alland pretends like none of that happened.

==But wait, there’s more! Because this story wasn’t already weird enough••… here’s another twist:

So at the same time that Don Gaetz was getting those messages from Kent and McGee…Scott Adams, you know, the Dilbert guy, receives a message from an acquaintance of his, Jacob Novak, who works as the media director for the Israeli Consulate.

The first one arrives the Saturday before the story breaks:

The next two arrive on Wednesday the 31st after Gaetz went on Tucker and revealed David McGee’s name to the world.

To his credit, the whole thing was sketchy as hell to Scott Adams so he took it upon himself to release Novak’s messages. The Israeli Consulate immediately distanced themselves from Novak’s messages but he was not fired or disciplined.

Part IV: Wrap Up

Joel Greenberg plead guilty to sex trafficking, identity fraud, wire fraud and host of other charges in May 2021. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison, with 10 of those coming from the mandatory minimum imposed by the sex trafficking charge.

The DOJ did not close its case against Matt Gaetz until October 2022. They never publicly acknowledged why he was not chargedalthough it becomes fairly obvious once you learn that Joel Greenberg had produced fake IDs for the underage girl in question.

How can you convict someone of statutory rape when this woman was using a real state of Florida driver’s license to present as being of age?

But of course,because it’s the swamp, that’s not where Matt’s troubles ended. The snakes in DC were going to milk that investigation for all its worth and when Gaetz went for McCarthy during the speaker fight,McCarthy and his allies plotted carefully to get their revenge.

We saw the culmination of that plotting on full display today. There are still lots of unanswered questions. Who is the “we” that Jacob Novak referenced in his texts to Scott Adams? Who leaked the info about the Gaetz case to Bob Kent?

Was Joel Greenberg running a honeypot scheme? If so, for who?Sure would be nice to get an Attorney General in office who actually gave a damn about answering any of those questions.

NASA: Mystery of Life’s Handedness Deepens

The mystery of why life uses molecules with specific orientations has deepened with a NASA-funded discovery that RNA — a key molecule thought to have potentially held the instructions for life before DNA emerged — can favor making the building blocks of proteins in either the left-hand or the right-hand orientation.

Resolving this mystery could provide clues to the origin of life. The findings appear in research recently published in Nature Communications.

 

Proteins are the workhorse molecules of life, used in everything from structures like hair to enzymes (catalysts that speed up or regulate chemical reactions).

Just as the 26 letters of the alphabet are arranged in limitless combinations to make words, life uses 20 different amino acid building blocks in a huge variety of arrangements to make millions of different proteins.

 

Some amino acid molecules can be built in two ways, such that mirror-image versions exist, like your hands, and life uses the left-handed variety of these amino acids.

Although life based on right-handed amino acids would presumably work fine, the two mirror images are rarely mixed in biology, a characteristic of life called homochirality.

It is a mystery to scientists why life chose the left-handed variety over the right-handed one.

 

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the molecule that holds the instructions for building and running a living organism.

However, DNA is complex and specialized; it “subcontracts” the work of reading the instructions to RNA (ribonucleic acid) molecules and building proteins to ribosome molecules.

DNA’s specialization and complexity lead scientists to think that something simpler should have preceded it billions of years ago during the early evolution of life.

A leading candidate for this is RNA, which can both store genetic information and build proteins. The hypothesis that RNA may have preceded DNA is called the “RNA world” hypothesis.

 

If the RNA world proposition is correct, then perhaps something about RNA caused it to favor building left-handed proteins over right-handed ones.

However, the new work did not support this idea, deepening the mystery of why life went with left-handed proteins.

 

The experiment tested RNA molecules that act like enzymes to build proteins, called ribozymes.

“The experiment demonstrated that ribozymes can favor either left- or right-handed amino acids, indicating that RNA worlds, in general, would not necessarily have a strong bias for the form of amino acids we observe in biology now,” said Irene Chen, of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Samueli School of Engineering, corresponding author of the Nature Communications paper.

 

In the experiment, the researchers simulated what could have been early-Earth conditions of the RNA world.

They incubated a solution containing ribozymes and amino acid precursors to see the relative percentages of the right-handed and left-handed amino acid, phenylalanine, that it would help produce.

 

They tested 15 different ribozyme combinations and found that ribozymes can favor either left-handed or right-handed amino acids.

This suggested that RNA did not initially have a predisposed chemical bias for one form of amino acids.

This lack of preference challenges the notion that early life was predisposed to select left-handed-amino acids, which dominate in modern proteins.

 

“The findings suggest that life’s eventual homochirality might not be a result of chemical determinism but could have emerged through later evolutionary pressures,” said co-author Alberto Vázquez-Salazar, a UCLA postdoctoral scholar and member of Chen’s research group.

Earth’s prebiotic history lies beyond the oldest part of the fossil record, which has been erased by plate tectonics, the slow churning of Earth’s crust.

During that time, the planet was likely bombarded by asteroids, which may have delivered some of life’s building blocks, such as amino acids.

In parallel to chemical experiments, other origin-of-life researchers have been looking at molecular evidence from meteorites and asteroids.

 

“Understanding the chemical properties of life helps us know what to look for in our search for life across the solar system,” said co-author Jason Dworkin, senior scientist for astrobiology at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and director of Goddard’s Astrobiology Analytical Laboratory.

Dworkin is the project scientist on NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission, which extracted samples from the asteroid Bennu and delivered them to Earth last year for further study.

This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image features a spiral galaxy, named UGC 10043. We don’t see the galaxy’s spiral arms because we are seeing it from the side.

Located roughly 150 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Serpens, UGC 10043 is one of the somewhat rare spiral galaxies that we see edge-on.

 

This edge-on viewpoint makes the galaxy’s disk appear as a sharp line through space, with its prominent dust lanes forming thick bands of clouds that obscure our view of the galaxy’s glow.

If we could fly above the galaxy, viewing it from the top down, we would see this dust scattered across UGC 10043, possibly outlining its spiral arms.

Despite the dust’s obscuring nature, some active star-forming regions shine out from behind the dark clouds.

All spiral galaxies have a bulge similar to this one as part of their structure.

These bulges hold stars that orbit the galactic center on paths above and below the whirling disk; it’s a feature that isn’t normally obvious in pictures of galaxies.

The unusually large size of this bulge compared to the galaxy’s disk is possibly due to UGC 10043 siphoning material from a nearby dwarf galaxy.

This may also be why its disk appears warped, bending up at one end and down at the other.

 

Like most full-color Hubble images, this image is a composite, made up of several individual snapshots taken by Hubble at different times, each capturing different wavelengths of light.

One notable aspect of this image is that the two sets of data that comprise this image were collected 23 years apart, in 2000 and 2023!

Hubble’s longevity doesn’t just afford us the ability to produce new and better images of old targets; it also provides a long-term archive of data which only becomes more and more useful to astronomers.

'Feedback from the senators on the meetings was very positive,' said a source close to Vance.

 

And a day earlier Trump had made clear he had no plan B if it came to a test of strength. 'No,' he told a reporter when asked whether he was reconsidering his choice.

 

But that all unraveled spectacularly on Thursday, when Gaetz announced he was withdrawing from consideration amid the fallout from a federal sex trafficking investigation.

 

Neither Gaetz nor Trump is known for bowing to negative headlines or public outrage.

 

But sources close to Trump said it was becomingly increasingly clear that Gaetz was unlikely to make it through the Senate confirmation process with the first wave of appointments. If at all.

 

At best this was going to be complicated and drag on into February, March,' said one source. 'And a strong A.G. is central to everything Trump wants to get started on on day one … immigration, overhauling the D.O.J. …'

 

Trump did not push him out, but in a call Thursday morning the president-elect laid out the political and numerical reality.

 

The meetings on the Hill and Trump's own calls to senators still left Gaetz short of the votes he needed.

 

'They spoke and Trump made clear that he couldn't move the votes in the direction that they needed to move,' said a source familiar with the phone call.

 

'Gaetz's decision came after that.'

 

The pick illustrated how Trump is going about constructing his Cabinet. Gaetz has been a robust, loyal mouthpiece for the former president, and his promise to disrupt the Department of Justice was enough to outweigh questions about a lack of relevant experience, at least in Trump's mind.

 

It also made him a target.

 

Democrats were pressing hard to release a House ethics investigation into allegations of misconduct.

 

Gaetz has always denied any wrongdoing, including claims that he had sex with a 17-year-old woman in 2017.

 

But in a sign of how the allegations had the potential to be a drip, drip, drip of awkward headlines, another shoe was about to drop.

 

CNN said it contacted Gaetz on Thursday morning with details of a second sexual encounter with the 17-year-old, this time involving a second woman. He was asked for a response.

 

A day earlier, the New York Times ran other lurid headlines about drug fueled sex parties.

 

Soon after the request for comment, Gaetz went public with his decision. He called Vance beforehand to thank him for his efforts and to let him know the statement was coming.

 

'There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I'll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as attorney general,' Gaetz wrote on the social media platform X.

 

'Trump's DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1.'

 

Time is critical to Trump, who is embarking on a one-term presidency. He has made clear that he wants to push his agenda from his first day back in office.

 

And Gaetz had reportedly done the math, and concluded that there were at least four Republicans in the Senate who were adamant in their opposition to him: Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and the newly elected John Curtis of Utah, according to the New York Times.

 

Some Republican senators breathed a rapid sigh of relief that a longrunning confirmation saga was averted.

 

Senator Markwayne Mullin, who clashed with Gaetz in the past but had sounded more positive after Wednesday's meetings, said: I think because of the reports that were coming out, it was probably a good decision.'

 

It means Trump must go back to the drawing board in his search for an attorney general. Insiders said he was unimpressed with his meetings with state AGs and lawyers from big firms who lacked the disruptor mentality he wanted.

 

He spent Thursday holed up with advisers at his Mar-a-Lago home as he put the finishing touches to his Cabinet.

 

Within hours he had announced Pam Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida, as his new pick.

 

Seasoned observers of Trump said dropping Gaetz was the only way out.

 

'They only have so much political capital and this would have been a lot to use up right at the start of the administration,' said Carl Domino, former member of the Florida House of Representatives, who predicted Gaetz would have to withdraw hours before the announcement came.

 

'This was inevitable.'

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

Our nation was founded on the basic idea that the people we elect run the government. That isn’t how America functions today. Most legal edicts aren’t laws enacted by Congress but “rules and regulations” promulgated by unelected bureaucrats—tens of thousands of them each year. Most government enforcement decisions and discretionary expenditures aren’t made by the democratically elected president or even his political appointees but by millions of unelected, unappointed civil servants within government agencies who view themselves as immune from firing thanks to civil-service protections.

This is antidemocratic and antithetical to the Founders’ vision. It imposes massive direct and indirect costs on taxpayers. Thankfully, we have a historic opportunity to solve the problem. On Nov. 5, voters decisively elected Donald Trump with a mandate for sweeping change, and they deserve to get it.

President Trump has asked the two of us to lead a newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, to cut the federal government down to size. The entrenched and ever-growing bureaucracy represents an existential threat to our republic, and politicians have abetted it for too long. That’s why we’re doing things differently. We are entrepreneurs, not politicians. We will serve as outside volunteers, not federal officials or employees. Unlike government commissions or advisory committees, we won’t just write reports or cut ribbons. We’ll cut costs.

We are assisting the Trump transition team to identify and hire a lean team of small-government crusaders, including some of the sharpest technical and legal minds in America. This team will work in the new administration closely with the White House Office of Management and Budget. The two of us will advise DOGE at every step to pursue three major kinds of reform: regulatory rescissions, administrative reductions and cost savings. We will focus particularly on driving change through executive action based on existing legislation rather than by passing new laws. Our North Star for reform will be the U.S. Constitution, with a focus on two critical Supreme Court rulings issued during President Biden’s tenure.

In West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency (2022), the justices held that agencies can’t impose regulations dealing with major economic or policy questions unless Congress specifically authorizes them to do so. In Loper Bright v. Raimondo (2024), the court overturned the Chevron doctrine and held that federal courts should no longer defer to federal agencies’ interpretations of the law or their own rulemaking authority. Together, these cases suggest that a plethora of current federal regulations exceed the authority Congress has granted under the law.

DOGE will work with legal experts embedded in government agencies, aided by advanced technology, to apply these rulings to federal regulations enacted by such agencies. DOGE will present this list of regulations to President Trump, who can, by executive action, immediately pause the enforcement of those regulations and initiate the process for review and rescission. This would liberate individuals and businesses from illicit regulations never passed by Congress and stimulate the U.S. economy.

When the president nullifies thousands of such regulations, critics will allege executive overreach. In fact, it will be correcting the executive overreach of thousands of regulations promulgated by administrative fiat that were never authorized by Congress. The president owes lawmaking deference to Congress, not to bureaucrats deep within federal agencies. The use of executive orders to substitute for lawmaking by adding burdensome new rules is a constitutional affront, but the use of executive orders to roll back regulations that wrongly bypassed Congress is legitimate and necessary to comply with the Supreme Court’s recent mandates. And after those regulations are fully rescinded, a future president couldn’t simply flip the switch and revive them but would instead have to ask Congress to do so.

A drastic reduction in federal regulations provides sound industrial logic for mass head-count reductions across the federal bureaucracy. DOGE intends to work with embedded appointees in agencies to identify the minimum number of employees required at an agency for it to perform its constitutionally permissible and statutorily mandated functions. The number of federal employees to cut should be at least proportionate to the number of federal regulations that are nullified: Not only are fewer employees required to enforce fewer regulations, but the agency would produce fewer regulations once its scope of authority is properly limited. Employees whose positions are eliminated deserve to be treated with respect, and DOGE’s goal is to help support their transition into the private sector. The president can use existing laws to give them incentives for early retirement and to make voluntary severance payments to facilitate a graceful exit.

Conventional wisdom holds that statutory civil-service protections stop the president or even his political appointees from firing federal workers. The purpose of these protections is to protect employees from political retaliation. But the statute allows for “reductions in force” that don’t target specific employees. The statute further empowers the president to “prescribe rules governing the competitive service.” That power is broad. Previous presidents have used it to amend the civil service rules by executive order, and the Supreme Court has held—in Franklin v. Massachusetts (1992) and Collins v. Yellen (2021) that they weren’t constrained by the Administrative Procedures Act when they did so. With this authority, Mr. Trump can implement any number of “rules governing the competitive service” that would curtail administrative overgrowth, from large-scale firings to relocation of federal agencies out of the Washington area. Requiring federal employees to come to the office five days a week would result in a wave of voluntary terminations that we welcome: If federal employees don’t want to show up, American taxpayers shouldn’t pay them for the Covid-era privilege of staying home.

Finally, we are focused on delivering cost savings for taxpayers. Skeptics question how much federal spending DOGE can tame through executive action alone. They point to the 1974 Impoundment Control Act, which stops the president from ceasing expenditures authorized by Congress. Mr. Trump has previously suggested this statute is unconstitutional, and we believe the current Supreme Court would likely side with him on this question. But even without relying on that view, DOGE will help end federal overspending by taking aim at the $500 billion plus in annual federal expenditures that are unauthorized by Congress or being used in ways that Congress never intended, from $535 million a year to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and $1.5 billion for grants to international organizations to nearly $300 million to progressive groups like Planned Parenthood.

The federal government’s procurement process is also badly broken. Many federal contracts have gone unexamined for years. Large-scale audits conducted during a temporary suspension of payments would yield significant savings. The Pentagon recently failed its seventh consecutive audit, suggesting that the agency’s leadership has little idea how its annual budget of more than $800 billion is spent. Critics claim that we can’t meaningfully close the federal deficit without taking aim at entitlement programs like Medicare and Medicaid, which require Congress to shrink. But this deflects attention from the sheer magnitude of waste, fraud and abuse that nearly all taxpayers wish to end—and that DOGE aims to address by identifying pinpoint executive actions that would result in immediate savings for taxpayers.

With a decisive electoral mandate and a 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court, DOGE has a historic opportunity for structural reductions in the federal government. We are prepared for the onslaught from entrenched interests in Washington. We expect to prevail. Now is the moment for decisive action. Our top goal for DOGE is to eliminate the need for its existence by July 4, 2026—the expiration date we have set for our project. There is no better birthday gift to our nation on its 250th anniversary than to deliver a federal government that would make our Founders proud.

Emily Calandrelli, who adopted her online persona long before she booked a trip with Blue Origin, lifted off on Friday (Nov. 22) as one of the six passengers aboard the company's New Shepard rocket.

The 10-minute suborbital flight — of which about four minutes were spent in space — launched and landed at Blue Origin's West Texas site.

"This is my dream," wrote Calandrelli on social media when it was announced she was going to be on Blue Origin's NS-28 crew.

 

"I studied aerospace engineering for nearly a decade, then became the first woman in the U.S. with a national science [TV] show.

It became my mission to bring representation to girls in STEM [science, technology, engineering and mathematics]."

"Now, I'll become one the first 100 women in space, showing girls everywhere that they too can reach the stars," she said.

 

The ninth human spaceflight in Blue Origin's history, NS-28's crew also included Marc and Sharon Hagle, a married couple on their second Blue Origin launch after flying on the NS-20 mission in 2022; Austin Litteral, whose seat was sponsored by the livestream shopping platform Whatnot; J.D. Russell, an entrepreneur and former federal marine, fish and wildlife game warden; and Hank Wolfond, the CEO of a Canadian investment firm and a private pilot.

 

The six civilian astronauts rode aboard the "RSS First Step," Blue Origin's first of two human-rated New Shepard spacecraft.

Lifting off at 10:30 a.m. EST (1530 GMT or 9:30 a.m. local Texas time), the capsule flew past the Kármán line, the internationally accepted border between Earth's atmosphere and outer space.

The gumdrop-shaped spacecraft then descended under parachutes to a "soft" landing, while the New Shepard propulsion module (or booster) that lofted the crew to altitude made an engine-assisted vertical touchdown.

 

Calandrelli is the 10th woman to fly on a suborbital spaceflight above the Kármán line.

She is the 21st woman to reach space on a suborbital trajectory, including the astronauts who soared higher than the U.S.-recognized altitude of 50 miles (80 km) on Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo rocket plane.

Overall, Calandrelli is now among the 94 men and women who have seen Earth from above 50 miles high but who did not enter orbit.

Including all of the people (men and women) who have flown into space on orbital or suborbital launches, she is the 711th space traveler (as tallied by the Association of Space Explorers).

 

A native of West Virginia, Calandrelli is the first woman and third person to represent her home state in space (after NASA astronauts Jon McBride and Drew Morgan).

"I can't believe that [a] girl from Morgantown, West Virginia, gets to represent the 100th woman in history to fly to space." wrote Calandrelli.

Although the price of her seat remains undisclosed, Calandrelli did say that she paid "just as much as the others" on New Shepard through the support of "20 to 30 organizations, brands and people."

In return, she offered to do sponsored posts on her online channels and deliver speeches.

 

The first woman to fly into space (and first woman to enter orbit) was Soviet-era cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, who launched in 1963.

NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg became the 50th woman to leave Earth's atmosphere in 2008.

The first woman to launch on a suborbital flight was Beth Moses, Virgin Galactic's chief astronaut instructor, whose first of six SpaceShipTwo missions (to date) was in 2019.

The first woman to fly on New Shepard was Wally Funk, an aviator and member of the so-called "Mercury 13," who underwent the same medical tests as NASA's first astronauts in the early 1960s.

 

Among the personal items that Calandrelli took with her to space was a montage showing photos of the 99 women who flew before her.

"I wanted to honor how they paved the way for women like me and how they've made it possible for the next generation of girls who want to reach for the stars to actually grab a few," she said.

Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki started spewing ash and smoke on 4 November 2024. It has, so far, killed at least ten people and forced authorities to issue large-scale evacuations.

The volcanic ash cloud also caused hundreds of flights to be cancelled. The image clearly depicts the huge plume of ash and smoke spewing from the volcano and drifting westwards.

 

Laki Laki is one of two adjacent stratovolcanoes on Mount Lewotobi. The volcano summits, which are less than 2 km apart, are known locally as the husband-and-wife mountains.

Laki Laki means man, while its taller and broader spouse to its southeast is called Perempuan, or woman. While Perempuan has been dormant for decades, Laki Laki is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia.

Ideological diversity of media consumption predicts COVID-19 vaccination

This study examines the relationship between respondents’ vaccine hesitancy, reported media consumption patterns, ideological leanings, and trust in science. A large-scale survey conducted in the US in 2022 (N = 1,646) assessed self-reported COVID-19 vaccination, trust in science, and reported media consumption. Findings show that, regardless of personal ideology, individuals who consumed less conservative media and had a more ideologically diverse media diet were more likely to be fully vaccinated and boosted. Additionally, consuming more conservative media was negatively associated with trust in science, but this relationship was weaker among those with a more ideologically diverse media diet. By incorporating data from an earlier wave of the survey in the summer of 2020, before COVID-19 vaccines were available, we found that a less conservative and more ideologically diverse media diet in 2022 predicted vaccination behavior in 2022, controlling for prior vaccine intentions and media consumption in 2020. A similar survey conducted in the UK in the summer of 2020 paralleled patterns in the US regarding vaccine intentions and media consumption. These results suggest that an ideologically diverse media diet is associated with reduced vaccine hesitancy. Public health initiatives might benefit from encouraging ideologically diverse media consumption.

 

COVID-19 underscored that public health crises are social-behavioral problems as much as biomedical problems. Rapid vaccine development and delivery provided an opportunity to minimize the pandemic’s damage. But vaccine hesitancy hindered vaccine uptake in the United States (US) and elsewhere. Vaccine hesitancy cost hundreds of thousands of lives during the COVID-19 pandemic1, not to mention vast social and economic costs2.

 

Understanding the factors associated with vaccine hesitancy is important not only for addressing the ongoing threat of COVID-19 but also for tackling other diseases like influenza, which continue to face challenges in vaccine uptake. Vaccine hesitancy was identified as a top ten global threat in 20213, and remains a significant public health challenge. Research has highlighted socio-demographic factors that predict vaccine hesitancy, including age, education, cognitive reflection, ethnicity, diminished trust in institutions, and conservative ideology. This exploratory study builds on existing literature by examining how reported media consumption is associated with vaccine hesitancy and trust in science, independent of previously documented factors. Specifically, we investigate how two aspects of self-reported media consumption predict vaccine hesitancy and trust in science: the consumption of conservative media and the ideological diversity of consumed media. We examine whether these indices of media consumption predict vaccination behavior and trust in science over and above personal ideology and other previously documented factors.

 

Our findings indicate that consuming more conservative media is negatively associated with self-reported COVID-19 vaccination. Conversely, consuming a greater ideological diversity of media positively predicts COVID-19 vaccination. These patterns emerge even when controlling for vaccine intentions and media consumption from two years prior, as well as personal ideology, age, education, and other individual differences. When examining vaccine intentions measured in 2020, we observe similar trends in the United Kingdom (UK).

Astronaut in Army Reserve awarded wings and space badge for trip to International Space Station

Army Reserve Maj. Kate Rubins was already an astronaut when she joined the Army, but was surprised to find that learning some of the basics of soldiering reminded her of trips to space.

“I was quite surprised when I was in my basic officer leadership course learning land navigation and thinking how helpful that would be when I’m an astronaut,” she said.

“We don’t have satellite navigation around the moon. We don’t have magnetic fields or a compass, and so we are going to be using maps and terrain association and land navigation.”

 

Thursday, Rubins received the Basic Aviation Badge with Astronaut Device and Space Badge at a pinning ceremony at the Pentagon in Washington D.C.

The Astronaut Device on a flight wings is the rarest badge in the Army, awarded only to soldiers who have completed an operational space mission more than 50 miles above the earth (most airliners and military jets fly about 6 miles high, while the International Space Station is 250 miles up).

The Basic Space Badge is awarded to soldiers who serve at least a year in space-related positions.

 

Rubin’s “stellar” resume is unique, having first been to space nearly a decade ago as a civilian before joining the Army.

She was a crew member on the International Space Station and flight engineer during Expedition 48/49 in 2016 and again on mission 63/64 in 2020.

During her time at NASA as a civilian astronaut, she worked with Army researchers and was the first to sequence DNA in space, according to the Army.

 

On her second flight aboard the ISS, Rubins decided she wanted to serve so when she returned earthside, Rubin was commissioned as an Army Reserve officer.

“I had always wanted to serve, and I was getting a little older,” she said. “I was coming up against the age deadline in order to sign up and to commission, and I thought when I got back to the planet, this was one thing that I really wanted to do.”

She also said learning “how to think clearly in a challenging situation” and working in small teams on a mission are applicable to both of her Army and NASA worlds.

 

Rubins said the astronaut device — which is the rarest badge awarded by the Army — is worn on the basic aircrew badge or the space badge.

Officers are eligible for the device if they are in the Army and have flown in space on a government space mission with NASA.

“I learned about this when I was serving at NASA that this was something that was able to be awarded and so I’m very grateful,” Rubins said.

“The device is nice and it’s a very nice recognition. The opportunity to serve every day is what I’m here for.”

 

According to an Army release, the award is authorized to personnel who complete at least one operational mission in space which is defined as 50 miles above earth.

The device can be affixed to a soldier’s Army Aviator Badge, Flight Surgeon Badge or Aviation Badge.

In 2020, Lt. Col. Anne McClain was the first and only active duty soldier presented with the astronaut device after her 204-day mission to the ISS as a flight engineer for NASA Expeditions 58/59.

 

She spent two and a half years preparing as an astronaut for her space mission and six months doing a mission.

“When you come from space and you land back on Earth, there’s actually kind of a period of what do I do now?,” she said, adding that when astronauts return they do physical rehabilitation and go back to working at NASA.

“The idea that I was going from one mission into the next mission was actually incredibly helpful,” she said.

 

Rubin’s first milestone was getting her doctorate in cancer biology from Stanford University’s medical school. She then went on to work as a microbiologist.

Before commissioning and becoming a NASA astronaut, Rubins worked as a principal investigator at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts, leading 14 researchers in studies on viral diseases primarily affecting Central and West Africa, according to a NASA release.

Rubins said she also did molecular biology with Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease at Fort Dietrich, Maryland studying bio threat agents and diseases like mpox and Ebola.

 

“I had a lot of experience working on the biologic side trying to come up with defensive countermeasures or vaccines for these viruses of concern,” Rubins said.

She now uses her medical and biology expertise as an officer with the 75th U.S. Army Reserve Innovation Command, focusing on synthetic biology and biodefense.

Rubins said she looks at problems and solutions that are “biologically driven” which means her work involves finding modern techniques, adapting those for military purposes and keeping up on rapid changes in technology.

The Biden-Harris administration is spending millions funding a project to advise homosexual men on how to more safely engage in drug-fueled intercourse.

 

The University of Connecticut (UCONN) in July announced a five-year, $3.4 million grant from the U.S. National Institute of Health (NIH) for Assistant Professor Roman Shrestha to develop his app JomCare — “a smartphone-based just-in-time adaptive intervention aimed at improving access to HIV- and substance use-related harm reduction services for Malaysian GBMSM [gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men] engaged in chemsex,” university news website UCONN Today reported. “Chemsex,” according to Northern Irish LGBTQ+ nonprofit the Rainbow Project, is the involvement of drug use in one’s sex life, and typically involves Methamphetamine (crystal meth), Mephedrone (meth), and GHB and GBL (G).

 

Examples of the app’s use-cases include providing a user who has reported injecting drugs with prompts about ordering an at-home HIV test kit and employing safe drug injection practices, UCONN Today reported. The app is also slated to provide same-day delivery of HIV prevention drug PrEP, HIV self-testing kits and even a mood tracker.

 

“In Malaysia, our research has indicated that harm reduction needs of GBMSM [gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men] engaged in chemsex are not being adequately met,” Shrestha told UCONN Today. “Utilizing smartphone apps and other mHealth tools presents a promising and cost-effective approach to expand access to these services.” (RELATED: Feds Dump Millions In One Latin American Country To Fund Sex Changes, LGBT Activism)

 

Homosexuality is illegal in Malaysia and is punishable by imprisonment, according to digital LGBTQ+ rights publication Equaldex. Drug use, including of cannabis, is illegal in Malaysia, and drug trafficking can be a capital offense.

 

The NIH disbursed $773,845 to Shrestha in July to conduct a 90-day trial testing the efficacy of JomCare among 482 chemsex-involved Malaysian gays. It also provided Shrestha with $191,417 in 2022 to “facilitate access to gender-affirming health care” for transgender women in the country.

 

“Gender-affirming care” is a euphemism used to describe a wide range of procedures, including sometimes irreversible hormone treatments that can lead to infertility as well as irreversible surgeries like mastectomies, phalloplasties and vaginoplasties.

 

Shrestha has a track record of researching mobile health (mHealth) initiatives for foreign homosexuals, co-authoring a 2024 study entitled, “Preferences for mHealth Intervention to Address Mental Health Challenges Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in Nepal.”

 

The proliferation of LGBT rights has been a “foreign policy priority” under the Biden-Harris administration, a State Department spokesperson previously told the Daily Caller News Foundation, with President Joe Biden instructing federal government department heads to “to advance the human rights of LGBTQI+ persons.”

 

“Around the globe, including here at home, brave lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) activists are fighting for equal protection under the law, freedom from violence, and recognition of their fundamental human rights,” a 2021 White House memorandum states. “The United States belongs at the forefront of this struggle — speaking out and standing strong for our most dearly held values.”

 

President-elect Donald Trump announced on Nov. 12 that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy would collaborate to establish a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), with Musk claiming the agency would feature a leaderboard for the “most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars.” Some DOGE cuts could come from LGBTQ+ programs, such as a grant from the United States Agency for International Development to perform sex changes in Guatemala and State Department funding for the showing of a play in North Macedonia entitled, “Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes.”

Rebuffed by Vatican, Pompeo Assails China and Aligns With Pope’s Critics

Pope Francis declined to see Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is demanding a harder Vatican line on China. The Holy See said meeting just before a U.S. election would be inappropriate.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

 

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

Russia Launches Supply Rocket to International Space Station

Russia’s Roscosmos space agency successfully launched a cargo spacecraft toward the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday, carrying New Year’s gifts alongside essential supplies.

 

A Soyuz-2 rocket carrying the Progress MS-29 cargo ship lifted off from Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome at 3:22 p.m. Moscow time, according to Roscosmos.

The unmanned vessel is set to dock with the ISS at 5:36 p.m. on Saturday after spending two days in orbit.

 

The spacecraft is delivering nearly 2,500 kilograms of cargo, including more than 1,100 kilograms of food, clothing and scientific equipment.

It also contains 869 kilograms of refueling fuel, 420 liters of drinking water, and 43 kilograms of compressed nitrogen.

 

Cosmonaut Alexei Ovchinin said last week that the Expedition 72 crew on the ISS is eagerly anticipating New Year’s gifts from their families and friends, which are included in the shipment.

After six months attached to the station’s Poisk module, Progress MS-29 will jettison filled with trash and burn up upon re-entering Earth’s atmosphere.

 

This marks the seventh launch from Baikonur in 2024.
