Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister withdraws as Trump's nominee to lead DEA

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister has withdrawn his nomination from President-elect Donald Trump to lead the Drug Enforcement Agency, the sheriff announced on social media Tuesday evening.

"To have been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration is the honor of a lifetime," Chronister wrote in an Instagram post.

He continued, "Over the past several days, as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, I've concluded that I must respectfully withdraw from consideration."

When Chronister was initially nominated, President-elect Trump said this about his selection.

"I am pleased to nominate Sheriff Chad Chronister for Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)," Trump wrote on his social media website. "For over 32 years, Sheriff Chad Chronister has served the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and received countless commendations and awards for keeping his community SAFE."

Chronister graduated from the FBI National Academy's 260th session and has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and a master's degree in criminology. He was appointed in 2017 by then-Florida Gov. Rick Scott to head the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and has since been reelected twice.

Chronister is the second nominee to withdraw after being selected by President-elect Trump. Former Congressman Matt Gaetz withdrew as Attorney General nominee after numerous scandals emerged.

Zelensky demanding NATO for peace – media

Kiev could sign a truce with Russia if membership of the US-led military bloc is guaranteed, the Ukrainian leader has said

Kiev could agree to a ceasefire with Moscow if NATO membership is guaranteed, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has told Kyodo News.

In an interview with the Japanese media outlet published by his office on Monday, Zelensky claimed that guaranteed membership of NATO must be a condition for signing a truce with Moscow. Being part of the US-led military bloc would ensure the country is in “a strong position” in case of future conflict with Moscow, he added.

Zelensky has insisted in the past that only the “complete withdrawal” of Russian forces from former Ukrainian territoriesand the restoration of the country’s 1991 borders could serve as a precondition for peace negotiations.

He abruptly changed tack last week, telling Sky News he could agree to a ceasefire without the territories if Kiev became a NATO member. He made similar comments to Kyodo, admitting that the Ukrainian army currently “lacks the strength” to take back the land.

“We must ensure that Ukraine is in a strong position before we start talk of a diplomatic settlement. We could even cede some territories which we cannot return today – we lack the strength to return Crimea, it is a fact,” he said, adding that it could be done later through diplomatic means, “but only after we know we are strong enough that [Russia] does not launch a new operation [against us].”

“For this we need the invitation to NATO. From the point of view of our geography, geopolitics, modern challenges and security guarantees, it is very important for us to be associated with NATO,” he remarked.

Explaining his U-turn on preconditions for peace, Zelensky said that the conflict has entered a “complicated period” and it is therefore “necessary to end it as soon as possible” to avoid more bloodshed and loss of lives.

“NATO equals security for Ukraine… We don’t want more risks, we want investments and businesses to come in, and [NATO membership] could offer security guarantees not only to Ukraine, but Western investors,” he added.

Ukraine applied to join the US-led military bloc in September 2022. While most NATO member-states have supported Kiev’s aspirations, the bloc has repeatedly warned that Ukraine cannot become a member until the fighting with Russia is resolved.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has long cited NATO’s eastward expansion as one of the causes of the conflict. Moscow has repeatedly insisted that Ukraine drop its plans to join NATO, commit to neutral status, and cede claims to all five former Ukrainian regions that chose to join Russia before any peace talks.

More Ukrainian troops deserting – Polish minister

National Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz has said that the number of Kiev’s soldiers training in Poland who walk away is likely to grow

Ukrainian soldiers training in Poland are beginning to experience war fatigue and desertion is likely to grow, Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, told journalists on Monday.

Asked to comment on the recent Financial Times report about the growing number of desertions among Ukrainian servicemen, including those training abroad, the minister admitted that this was also happening in Poland, albeit at a “small, negligible” scale that “in no way threatens the training process.”

However, he noted that such instances are likely to occur more often the longer the conflict drags on, noting that war fatigue is setting in and that the Polish people are feeling it too.

The minister also expressed concern that few young Ukrainians living in Poland or other European countries have signed up for military training, despite that being one of the key agreements of the military cooperation deal between Warsaw and Kiev.

“I remember our conversation with President Zelensky in July this year. He was very optimistic that many people would sign up, that they had the whole operation prepared. Here,few people signed up. There were several dozen people who signed up for such training,”Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

At the same time, he also noted that Poland has been one of the primary counties providing training for Kiev’s troops, with about 26,000 Ukrainian servicemen having gone through Polish training camps since the start of the conflict.

Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported on Saturdaythat more than twice as many Ukrainians had been charged with desertion this yearthan in 2022 and 2023 combined. According to the outlet,Ukrainian prosecutors opened up some 60,000 cases againstdeserters between January and October of this year.

The article also claimed that a number of Ukrainians were deserting while at training camps in NATO countries, with one anonymous Polish official telling the outlet thatsome 12 Ukrainian troops run off from training centers in the country every month.

The Financial Times noted that many Ukrainian troops see desertion as the only way of getting off the front lines to rest as the country’s armed forces continue to experience a shortage of manpower andsoldiers are denied rotations to recoup and retrain.

“They’re just killing them, instead of letting them rehabilitate and rest,”one officer told the newspaper.

Ukrainian draft dodger pepper-sprays recruitment officer (VIDEO)

The man was trying to avoid conscription in the city of Odessa, new footage shows

A prospective Ukrainian recruit pepper-sprayed a conscription officer in the port city of Odessa in a bid to avoid the draft as Kiev continues its mobilization campaign, according to a video published on social media.

The 15-second clip, which went viral on Tuesday, shows a man in military attire pouncing on a civilian in an apparent attempt to apprehend him. It is unclear exactly what preceded the incident.

Seconds later, the prospective recruit, a man in his 40s, manages to get to his knees while pulling out what appears to be a canister of pepper spray, and pointing it at the recruiter’s face. The officer turns quickly in an effort to avoid the spray, and then approaches the civilian again.

He uses the pepper spray again, and the recruitment officer appears to spray the man back. The would-be recruit then begins to runtowards a nearby bus stop, but the officer catches up with him and knocks him to the ground as reinforcements arrive at the scene. The draft dodger’s fate remains unclear.

Ukraine announced general mobilization in February 2022 following the escalation of the conflict with Russia, barring most men aged between 18 and 60 from leaving the country. The campaign was marred by widespread bribery and draft-dodging.

Earlier this year, Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky signed laws lowering the draft age from 27 to 25 and tightening mobilization rules in an effort to address manpower shortages and make up for battlefield losses. Despite the new draft measures, Ukrainian commanders continue to complain about the lack of reinforcements and inadequate training of recruits.

While many potential recruits have also risked their lives by attempting to flee the country across rough terrain to the EU, many others have had to contend with Ukrainian military patrols attempting to send them to the front lines, leading to repeated clashes.

Kiev ‘sabotaging’ POW swaps – Moscow

Russia has published a list of over 600 captured Ukrainian soldiers that Kiev has refused to exchange

Kiev is stonewalling prisoner swaps with Moscow and has “abandoned” several hundred Ukrainian soldiers, refusing to repatriate themdespite repeated appeals from Russia, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated in a Telegram post on Tuesday.

The diplomat was commenting on a list of Ukrainian soldiers who had been captured that was published earlier on Tuesday by Russia’s top human rights official, Tatyana Moskalkova. The list has 630 names, and, according to the official, includesservicemen who have been awaiting their chance to return home for more than a year.

“The Kiev regime continues to sabotage the prisoner exchange process in every possible way,” Zakharova said in her post. She noted thatMoscow has repeatedly offered the Kiev authorities prisoner exchanges, but the “regime”has brushed these proposals off, instead accusing Russia of refusing to release the captives.

“[Kiev] does everything to move away from real, specific work that would bring results in favor of endless international political performances, considering delay as a media tool for promoting its interests,” she stated.

The problem is [the Kiev regime] does not take back its people. [Vladimir]Zelensky does not need 630 Ukrainian citizens who were captured. He abandoned them.

Zakharova noted that the Russian Defense Ministry hassent Ukraine proposals to swap 935 Ukrainian prisonersof war and was ready to allow them to return immediately on parity terms. However,Kiev has so far only agreed to repatriate about 300 servicemen, “giving no reason” as to why “it doesn’t need” the rest.

“Therefore, when you hear that Russia allegedly does not want to conduct exchanges and does not give Ukraine back its people – this is a lie. There are figures and facts. The Kiev regime does not want to take Ukrainian citizens back,”the diplomat stressed.

Commenting on the situation in an interview with journalist Vladimir Solovyov later in the day, Zakharova added thatthe servicemen Kiev agrees to swapare largely nationalists – “all this terrorist rabble, outright thugs, members of the Azov Battalion, people who are the mainstay of lawlessness in Ukraine” – while ordinary mobilized soldiers and those who had voluntarily surrendered to Russian troops tend to be left behind.

Zakharova slammed Zelensky for what she dubbed “a betrayal of Ukrainian citizens,” calling on Ukrainians to see the lists of prisoners for themselves and “start asking questions.”

The latest announced prisoner swap between Moscow and Kiev took place in October and was mediated by the UAE. The exchange saw 95 servicemen from each side return to their respective countries, as reported by the Russian Defense Ministry. On November 8, the two sides also exchanged the remains of fallen troops, with Ukraine receiving 563 bodies and Russia 37.
