President-elect Trump called in and gave GOP senators a pep talk Tuesday as they met behind closed doors on how to rapidly pass his top priorities, three sources in the room told Axios.

Why it matters:Trump knows he has to work closely with the Senate to get things done. GOP congressional leaders are signaling that they are raring to go.

• Incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) warned

Republican senators in their policy retreat Tuesday morning toexpect longer, five-day work weeks — starting in the new year through Easter.

• They have a long list: Fund the government for the rest of the year, agree to a top line budget number and potentially raise the debt limit — not to mention confirm all of Trump's top administration positions.

Zoom in:Thune and incoming GOP Policy Chair Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) are holding a lengthy policy retreat Tuesday in D.C.

• They are expected to spend significant time discussing how they plan to use budget reconciliation to get through their policy priorities while evading the 60-vote filibuster.

• Border, energy and taxes are also expected to be topics.

What we're hearing:Early in the retreat, Thune addressed senators telling them to gear up for long work days and work weeks to set up Trump's administration and move fast on their own priorities, two sources in the room told Axios.

•Many Republican senators have complained about lax work schedules. In a normal week, senators usually arrive at the Capitol late Monday afternoon and fly home Thursday afternoon.

That’s also why Trump killed the vaccine safety commission Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was supposed to lead. Trump bragged last year about how huge the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical fortune is after the company received $1 billion for Operation Warp Speed. For the study, researchers created a 27 second advertisement that included Trump and his family urging people to get the vaccines.

The ad ran on more than 100,000 YouTube channels in the second half of October, 2021. On the Fox News YouTube channel, it ran before segments with some of the network's most popular hosts, including Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlson, and Sean Hannity.

Researchers estimate the campaign led to 104,036 more shots being administered, calling the move a "cost-effective" way to increase vaccination rates in the country, at a time when 60% of unvaccinated adults were Republicans.

An Army general who oversaw the US withdrawal from Afghanistan was promoted to a four-star officer after a Republican senator dropped a hold on his nomination, according to a Senate aide.

The Senate on Monday confirmed Lt. Gen. Chris Donahue to be the commander of US Army Europe-Africaby unanimous consent, meaning no senator objected to his approval. Sen. Markwayne Mullin, a Republican from Oklahoma, had previously blocked the promotion, despite the Senate Armed Services Committee advancing 984 other military promotions.

It was not immediately clear why Mullin dropped his hold, and CNN is reaching out to Mullin’s office for comment.

Donahue, who currently serves as the commander of the 18th Airborne Corps at Fort Liberty in North Carolina,oversaw the final withdrawal from Afghanistan and was the last US soldier on the ground at Kabul’s international airport.

A night vision picture of Donahue boarding a cargo flight out of the airport became a symbolic image of the end of a 20-year war and a chaotic withdrawal that saw the deaths of 13 US troops in a suicide bombing.

In addition to his current position as the commander of a storied military corps,Donahue has also been critical in the US effort to support Ukraine, helping to establish the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine. The organization was established in November 2022 as a more long-term extension of the work of 18th Airborne Corps, which deployed to Europe to reinforce NATO’s eastern flank after Russia invaded Ukraine.

In a military career that has spanned more than three decades since his graduation from West Point, Donahue has deployed 20 times, including time in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, North Africa and Eastern Europe, according to his Army biography.

Mullin was one of the most vocal Republicans calling for accountability after the Abbey Gate bombing that killed 13 US service members during the final days of the evacuation from Afghanistan. On the third anniversary of the bombing,Mullin said that “not one person has been held accountable for the disaster” and explicitly named Donahue.He also namedformer Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen.Mark Milley,who has repeatedly come under attack from President-elect Donald Trump, with whom he had a contentious relationship.

Donahue had the very public and vocal backingof a number of former Defense Department officials,including Mark Esper.who served as Trump’s Defense secretary for 16 months during his first term. Esper said on social media that Donahue was a “great pick” and had “tremendous experience.”

China launches clandestine TJS-13 satellite, rocket reaches milestone

China launched a new communication engineering test satellite early Tuesday, adding to a series of satellites potentially for undisclosed military purposes.

A Long March 3B rocket lifted off at 12:56 a.m. Eastern (0556 UTC) Dec. 3 from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, southwest China.

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) announced launch success, revealing the previously undisclosed payload to be communication technology experiment Satellite-13, or Tongxin Jishu Shiyan-13 (TJS-13).

The satellite is expected to be in geosynchronous transfer orbit.

The TJS-13 satellite will be used for satellite communication, radio and television, data transmission and other services, and will also carry out related technology tests, according to Chinese state media.

However, the lack of specific details surrounding the TJS-13 satellite, consistent with earlier TJS missions, suggests potential dual-use or military-related capabilities.

TJS spacecraft are geostationary satellites, potentially carrying out classified missions including signals intelligence, early warning missions and satellite inspection activities.

TJS-3, launched in 2018, released a subsatellite which carried out subsequent maneuvers indicating it was a subsatellite capable of coordinated movements with TJS-3. The main satellite later made close approaches to U.S. satellites.

TJS-10 and TJS-11 launched on a Long March 7A rocket in November 2023 and a Long March 7 in February 2024 respectively. These satellites were likewise described as being used to carry out multi-band, high-speed satellite communication technology verification.

The launch was, notably, the 100th of the workhorse Long March 3B. The rocket has performed 96 successful launches with two failures and two partial failures.

The first launch, in February 1996 carrying Intelsat 708, infamously saw the rocket veer off course shortly after clearing the tower and impacting a nearby village.

Developed by CASC’s China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), the three-stage and four-liquid-booster rocket is the only Chinese launcher to reach 100 launches. There have been more than 500 Long March rocket launches.

The Long March 3B launched the Beidou GNSS constellation, a number of Chang’e lunar missions, Tianlian and Fengyun series satellites and others, and international communications satellites.

It is expected to launch the Tianwen-2 near Earth asteroid sample return mission in May 2025.

The launch of TJS-13 was China’s 60th orbital launch attempt of 2024. The country was aiming for around 100 launches this year but appears far short of that tally.

It follows the debut launch of the Long March 12 single-core medium-lift rocket from a new commercial spaceport Nov. 30. A Long March 8 rocket could launch from the spaceport before the end of the year.

The third batch of satellites for the Qianfan/Thousand Sails megaconstellation is expected to launch on a Long March 6A rocket late Dec. 3 Eastern.

China bans exports to US of gallium, germanium, antimony in response to chip sanctions

BANGKOK (AP) — China announced Tuesday it is banning exports to the United States of gallium, germanium, antimony and other key high-tech materials with potential military applications, as a general principle, lashing back at U.S. limits on semiconductor-related exports.

The Chinese Commerce Ministry announced the move after the Washington expanded its list of Chinese companies subject to export controls on computer chip-making equipment, software and high-bandwidth memory chips. Such chips are needed for advanced applications.

The ratcheting up of trade restrictions comes as President-elect Donald Trump has been threatening to sharply raise tariffs on imports from China and other countries, potentially intensifying simmering tensions over trade and technology.

China’s Foreign Ministry also issued a vehement reproof. “China has lodged stern protests with the U.S. for its update of the semiconductor export control measures, sanctions against Chinese companies, and malicious suppression of China’s technological progress,” Lin Jian, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said in a routine briefing Tuesday.

“I want to reiterate that China firmly opposes the U.S. overstretching the concept of national security, abuse of export control measures, and illegal unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction against Chinese companies,” Lin said.

The minerals sourced in China are used in computer chips, cars and other products

China said in July 2023 it would require exporters to apply for licenses to send to the U.S. the strategically important materials such as gallium and germanium. In August, the Chinese Commerce Ministry said it would restrict exports of antimony, which is used in a wide range of products from batteries to weapons, and impose tighter controls on exports of graphite.

Such minerals are considered critical for national security. China is a major producer of antimony, which is used in flame retardants, batteries, night-vision goggles and nuclear weapon production, according to a 2021 U.S. International Trade Commission report.

The limits announced by Beijing on Tuesday also include exports of super-hard materials, such as diamonds and other synthetic materials that are not compressible and extremely dense. They are used in many industrial areas such as cutting tools, disc brakes and protective coatings. The licensing requirements that China announced in August also covered smelting and separation technology and machinery and other items related to such super-hard materials.

China is the biggest global source of gallium and germanium, which are produced in small amounts but are needed to make computer chips for mobile phones, cars and other products, as well as solar panels and military technology.

After the U.S. side announced it was adding 140 companies to a so-called “entity list” subject to strict export controls, China’s Commerce Ministry protested and said it would act to protect China’s “rights and interests.” Nearly all of the companies affected by Washington’s latest trade restrictions are based in China, though some are Chinese-owned businesses in Japan, South Korea and Singapore.

Both governments say their respective export controls are needed for national security.

China’s government has been frustrated by U.S. curbs on access to advanced processor chips and other technology on security grounds but had been cautious in retaliating, possibly to avoid disrupting China’s fledgling developers of chips, artificial intelligence and other technology.

Various Chinese industry associations issued statements protesting the U.S. move to limit access to advanced chip-making technology.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said it opposed using national security as a grounds for export controls, “abuse of export control measures, and the malicious blockade and suppression of China.”

“Such behavior seriously violates the laws of the market economy and the principle of fair competition, undermines the international economic and trade order, disrupts the stability of the global industrial chain, and ultimately harms the interests of all countries,” it said in a statement.

The China Semiconductor Industry Association issued a similar statement, adding that such restrictions were disrupting supply chains and inflating costs for American companies.

“U.S. chip products are no longer safe and reliable. China’s related industries will have to be cautious in purchasing U.S. chips,” it said.

The U.S. gets about half its supply of both gallium and germanium metals directly from China, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. China exported about 23 metric tons (25 tons) of gallium in 2022 and produces about 600 metric tons (660 tons) of germanium per year.

The U.S. has deposits of such minerals but has not been mining them, though some projects underway are exploring ways to tap those resources.

The export restrictions have had a mixed impact on prices for those critical minerals, with the price of antimony more than doubling this year to over $25,000 per ton. Prices for gallium, germanium and graphite also have mostly risen.

In response, the Pentagon has launched initiatives to mitigate these vulnerabilities. A key focus is reducing dependence on GPS by integrating alternative positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) technologies that are being developed by the commercial industry.

Lockheed Martin, which produces GPS satellites but not the ground systems or user equipment, is countering claims of systemic weakness, particularly for military users.

Morehouse underscored the distinction between civilian and military GPS signals, particularly the advanced military M-code signal.

“M-code is very difficult, if not impossible, to spoof,” Morehouse said at a recent Lockheed Martin news conference.

While jamming remains a threat, he clarified that spoofing concerns primarily apply to civilian signals. “You could try to steer a commercial airliner off path, but you couldn’t steer a missile off the path,” he explained.

The next generation of satellites include enhanced security features such as the Regional Military Protection signal, which is more powerful and resistant to jamming, he said.

However, some key features will remain underutilized until modernized ground systems and user receivers — developed by other contractors — are fully deployed, a process that has been plagued by delays.

The next evolution

GPS satellites are a cornerstone of Lockheed Martin’s space portfolio. In 2018, the company secured a $7.2 billion contract to produce up to 22 GPS IIIF satellites. Several are already in production.

For civilians, the next evolution is the L5 signal, a more powerful and precise channel that will be particularly valuable for commercial aviation. However, this capability requires additional satellites in orbit and updated control systems before it can be fully operational.

For the military, GPS IIIF promises jam-resistant features and increased signal power. The first GPS IIIF satellite is scheduled to launch in 2027.

Complicating the discussion around GPS vulnerabilities is the Department of the Air Force’s Resilient GPS (R-GPS) program.

This initiative aims to supplement the existing GPS system with smaller, lower-cost satellites based on commercial designs.

The Space Systems Command plans to launch up to eight R-GPS satellites by 2028, with additional launches planned in phases.

The program, which has engaged companies like Astranis, Axient, L3Harris and Sierra Space, is designed to provide a subset of GPS signals that are compatible with both military and civilian receivers.

The Space Systems Command has said that R-GPS is not a replacement for GPS but rather an added layer of resilience.

Jeff Schrader, vice president of strategy and business development at Lockheed Martin Space, stressed that the new program is not in competition with GPS IIIF.

“You won’t hear the Space Force say R-GPS is replacing GPS,” Schrader said. “What they say is that we are going to work together.”

Morehouse warned about what he sees as an overblown narrative of systemic risk in GPS. “There’s a lot more nuance to it than GPS magically going away one day.”

The system’s robustness, he argues, is often under-appreciated.

Report: Syrian Islamists Court Israel With Talk of Peace Deal

Former Israeli military intel officer says he was given list of equipment sought by fighters

Former Israeli military intelligence officer Lt. Mordechai Kedar has added fuel to claims that Israel has ties with the Syrian Islamist fighters who have taken the city of Aleppo and surrounding area in the past week. Lt. Kedar says he is in “constant contact” with the Islamists and that they “do not consider Israel an enemy.”

The talk of Israeli complicity with the Islamist offensive began virtually when the offensive started attracting attention. On Saturday the Syrian Army issued a statement saying that they are effectively fighting “the military arm of the Israeli enemy, falsely labeled as the ‘Syrian revolution.’”

This is a particularly dramatic claim because the Islamists are led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formed by the merger of various Islamist organizations built around Syria’s branch of al-Qaeda. Indeed, the former Syrian al-Qaeda leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani is the present leader of HTS.

But Lt. Kedar offers considerable detail about the ties with the HTS, however, referring to them as “Syrian revolutionaries” and insisting that they “must be supported.” Israel sees them as having a common interest in regime change in Syria.

That doesn’t stop at the Syrian border either. The Islamists reportedly told Lt. Kedar that they are ready for a peace deal with Israel after they take over all of Syria and Lebanon. They also said they plan to open Israeli embassies in both Damascus and Beirut.

How far the contact goes right now isn’t totally clear, but Lt. Kedar did say that he recently passed a “detailed” list of requested items from the Islamist forces to the Israeli government. He didn’t say what items were requested.

That’s not an unprecedented occurrence, however. Former Israeli Army Chief Gabi Eisenkot acknowledged in 2019 that Israel had supplied weapons to the Syrian Islamists, including the Nusra Front, which later former HTS.

US Announces New $725 Million Arms Package for Ukraine

The package includes anti-personnel mines, which are widely banned, for use inside Russia's Kursk Oblast

The Biden administration on Monday announced a new $725 million weapons package for Ukraine, which includes anti-personnel mines, ammunition for the HIMARS rocket systems, and other equipment.

President Biden just recently approved the provision of anti-personnel mines for Ukraine, a step that goes against his own policy meant to limit the use of the indiscriminate weapon. In 2022, Biden re-implemented an Obama-era policy that prohibited the transfer and use of US anti-personnel mines outside of the Korean Peninsula.

Biden’s decision to send the mines has been condemned by arms control groups and many countries that are signatories to a treaty banning the weapon. The mines, which are designed to kill or maim people, have been banned by 164 countries under the Ottawa Treaty. The US and Russia are not signatories, but Ukraine is and has been in violation of the treaty.

According to The Associated Press, the purpose of the mines is for Ukraine to use them inside Russian territory in the Kursk Oblast, where Russian troops are gradually pushing out an invading Ukrainian force.

The provision of ammunition for the HIMARS systems means the US could be sending more Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), which have a range of about 190 miles and are fired by the HIMARS. Two US officials who spoke to the AP wouldn’t confirm if the new package includes ATACMS.

According to the Pentagon, the $725 million package includes:

The US-led political West is known for its chest-thumping when it comes to buzzwords such as “freedom, democracy, the rule of law, nonpartisanship”, etc. To that end, thousands of major NGOs (and God knows how many smaller ones) are engaged in creating the image of the political West that “leads the world” in all of the above.

If you go to websites of organizations such as Transparency International or the likes of it, you’ll find the US, UK, EU and other vassals and satellite states to be in the “blue” or “green”, while the actual world is all “red” or “orange”. The key takeaway is – the “jungle” is “horribly corrupt”, while the “garden” is “something to look up to”. There’s just one “tiny” issue with this – it’s all lies aiming to create a particular narrative that can be used to enforce the US/NATO viewpoint on the entire world.

In reality, the political West is essentially just as corrupt as any other place in the world (if not more, particularly on the top level). The treatment of Donald Trump is a testament to that. His flaws notwithstanding, Trump (or anyone, for that matter) certainly doesn’t deserve to be treated as a criminal if he hadn’t committed a crime. However, that’s exactly what happened, with the US ‘Justice’ Department targeting him in what was obviously a political decision. Expectedly, the mainstream propaganda machine joined the witch-hunt, all the while not only ignoring, but outright suppressing information about the elephant in the room – Hunter Biden. The incumbent’s son is perhaps one of the most prominent criminals in the world, as he has been involved in all sorts of repulsive illicit activities all over the world.

It should be noted we’re not only talking about “good old” corruption, embezzlement, drug and sex scandals, but even more disturbing crimes such as financing terrorism, development of bioweapons and child trafficking. Hunter Biden’s “vibrant career” spans well over a decade and it has always been a sort of “open secret” in the halls of power in Washington DC. However, over the years, he became quite careless, resulting in the laptop scandal that the corrupt federal institutions, including the FBI, tried to cover up (although they somehow managed to be sloppier than Hunter himself while doing so). You can only imagine the extent of his crimes when not even his family could prevent the opening of several cases against him. However, they still used their political power to drastically reduce the scope of prosecution.

On June 11, the “First Crackhead”, as some more independent media like to style Hunter Biden, was convicted on all three felony gun charges, concluding that he violated laws meant to prevent drug addicts from owning firearms. The mainstream propaganda machine immediately resorted to damage control with laughable sob stories about Hunter Biden “battling addiction”, while the DoJ officials insisted that the verdict shows “no one in this country is above the law”. Now that you’re done laughing, let’s analyze whether this claim holds. Namely, while it could be said that at least “some justice was served” with this conviction, as previously mentioned, drug abuse and high-level corruption are the least of Hunter Biden’s wrongdoings. The victims of his sadistic and barbaric tendencies certainly found no comfort in this verdict.

Strange lights seen from multiple Texas cities spark UFO speculation

Over Thanksgiving weekend, residents across Texas reported seeing unusual lights in the sky, igniting social media debates over potential UFO sightings.

According to social media videos from Texans, the phenomenon was observed in cities like Dallas, Galveston, Abilene and Houston.

Outside of state lines, people reported similar-looking sightings in North Carolina and Arizona.

A TikTok video recorded in Dallas shows three bright lights seen Nov. 30 by residents who said they were driving on State Highway 121. Beneath the figures, an airplane can be more easily identified while it flies at a horizontal angle.

“I’ve lived here my entire life, and I have never seen anything like this,” the TikTok user captioned the post. “They would disappear and reappear in different formations.”

The video’s location labels that it was captured near the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, but the user was positive the lights were not airplanes, they commented.

“People don’t understand how we know the difference living right here,” the TikTok user said in a post.

A separate TikTok account posted a different angle of the lights from another part of Highway 121. Another user commented that when they got up around 4 a.m., only two remained, but they moved higher up in the sky.

On the same evening, a Northwest Houston resident posted a video depicting three white and orange lights forming a triangle in the sky. Recorded at 7 p.m., the video prompted further speculation among viewers about the nature of the lights.

“I don’t know what those are… it’s got to be jets or planes or something,” the TikTok user says in the video.

On Dec. 1, a Galveston resident claimed they also saw strange lights in the night sky, this time over the Gulf of Mexico.

“There was a lot of light pollution, but they were so bright in real life, the TikTok user said in the post. “At least 15 bright lights at varying heights in the sky…saw a helicopter, and the difference was obvious.”

While some viewers in the comments agreed the figures may have been unworldly creatures paying Earth a visit, others said Texans were actually just seeing airplanes lined up to land at a nearby airport, the SpaceX satellite Starlink, or drones.

In the Pentagon’s latest report on UFOs, it cites that many of these items, along with balloons and birds, are often mistaken for objects of extraterrestrial origin.

The publication was released Nov. 14, one day after House lawmakers called for increased government transparency during a joint hearing by subcommittees of the House Oversight Committee.

Investigators found explanations for nearly 300 of 757 incidents of unidentified anomalous phenomena or UAPs — the government’s term for UFOs — reported to U.S. authorities from May 1, 2023, to June 1, 2024.

Although hundreds remain unexplained, the report states that “to date, AARO (All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office) has discovered no evidence of extraterrestrial beings, activity, or technology.”

“There is something out there,” Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee said during the hearing. “The question is: Is it ours, is it someone else’s, or is it otherworldly?”

Houston, Dallas and San Antonio are among the top Texas cities in which UFO sightings are reported, according to data from the National UFO Reporting Center.

Delaware Confiscates $100 Billion of Musk's Wealth

A Delaware judge moved Monday to confirm its confiscation of Elon Musk's wealth that he created at Tesla — denying him a compensation package that would be worth over $100 billion in value today.

Musk has paid a heavy price for countering woke politics, making X a neutral platform, and backing Donald Trump for president.

Delaware Chancellor Judge Kathaleen McCormick on Monday ruled to confirm her January ruling that found Musk was not eligible for a 2018 compensation package then valued at $56 billion.

McCormick complained the Tesla package for Musk was the "biggest compensation plan ever — an unfathomable sum."

After McCormick had initially ruled that Musk had not gotten proper approval from Tesla shareholders, Musk filed suit.

Musk said he properly received board approval and later hit financial targets to earn the compensation, including benchmarks based on stock value, profitability, and revenue.

At one point, visionary Musk had driven the value of Tesla to close a trillion dollars during the compensation period. Today, Tesla holds a market cap of over $1.1 trillion.

After the judge's January 2024 ruling, Tesla went back to its shareholders to approve the Musk compensation plan.

In June, Tesla shareholders again approved the original $56 billion compensation overwhelmingly — with 77% of stock owners backing Musk and the package.

After the shareholder vote, Tesla went back to the Delaware court to seek its approval, only to find its compensation plan rebuffed again.

"Even if a stockholder vote could have a ratifying effect, it could not do so here," McCormick said in her opinion Monday.

"Were the court to condone the practice of allowing defeated parties to create new facts for the purpose of revising judgments, lawsuits would become interminable," she wrote.

McCormick saw little contradiction, however, in penalizing Musk for the wealth he created, while granting the lawyers who sued him on behalf of shareholders an incredible $345 million in attorney fees for their legal filings.

Musk was not happy by today's ruling and took to X writing, "Shareholders should control company votes, not judges."

Musk reposted other X posts critical of the ruling.

Musk also reported fund manager Cathie Wood's X post where she called McCormick an "activist judge at its worst."

Paulina, 39, who lives on Thornham Drive in Sharples, describes how she was looking out of her window on last Friday (November 29) at around 9.45pm when she witnessed two strange blue lights hovering above her garden.

Similar mysterious lights have been reported across Greater Manchester and in London.

Paulina, who went into the garden with her children to inspect the mysterious lights, was able to capture them on video.

She is keen for anyone to help try and identify what it was and says it was very strange that it did not make any noise, nor did it have any beams that might have come from a laser.

Paulina said: “It was shocking, I was just looking through my window when I saw the lights outside.

"I ran out the house straight away and started recording it.

“It wasn’t lasers, there were no beams, nothing like that. No trail of any beams.

“It was just there in the sky. It’s so strange. I’ve never seen anything like this, it looks like a spaceship.

“About four miles away there is a train station with workers but come on! It’s not even in that direction and there was no trace of where the lights had come from.

“I’ve sent it to my friends, but no one can say what it is. My partner thinks there might have been a party, but there was no music or anything.

“It lasted about 10 minutes and was moving slightly slowly to the right. Someone has to explain this to the public, there must be an explanation.

“I thought maybe a satellite, it was looking like a UFO, it is very unexplainable as to why it was there.

“All of a sudden, the lights just blinked out, they slowly flickered out. There was nothing to it, but there must be some explanation.

Drug cartel grind to a halt with six major arrests in Colombia

5.8 tonnes of cocaine seized and 32 arrested as law enforcement cooperation between the EU countries and Colombia intensifies

In a long-term investigation supported by Europol, law enforcement authorities from Belgium, Colombia and Spain have dismantled a drug ring orchestrating large-scale cocaine trafficking from Colombia to the EU. The national authorities involved arrested 32 individuals in total, including the leader of the network. Law enforcement also seized 5.8 tonnes of cocaine in Colombia (Cartagena and Baranquilla) and on European soil in Spain (Barcelona and Valencia) and Belgium (Antwerp). The sting was coordinated by Europol’s Operational Taskforce.

This operation follows the arrests of two high-profile Camorra fugitives, falling under different investigations, and which were made in October in Colombia. International cooperation established between Europol and strategic countries in South America, such as Colombia, has proven essential for the advancement of large-scale investigations and the dismantlement of criminal cartels smuggling tonnes of cocaine to Europe. This cooperation is a key element of successful law enforcement operations targeting drug trafficking and serious and organised crime networks, which impacts the security of citizens in the EU and beyond.

Results of the action day on 5 November 2024:

6 arrests in Colombia (Baranquilla, Cartagena, Colombia Medellin and El Guamo);

5 house searches;

Seizure of cell phones and documents.

Overall results of actions targeting this criminal network:

32 arrests in Colombia and Spain (26 made in 2023);

5.8 tonnes of cocaine seized in Belgium, Colombia and Spain;

Seizures of assets including movable properties and real estates.

Combatting corruption to cut off the logistical chain

The investigation, conducted under Europol’s Operational Taskforce targeting the large-scale cocaine trafficking from source countries in Latin America, was initiated in April 2023. The operational activities focused on identifying how the network operated and who was behind it. The analysis of operational information gathered during the seizures identified that most of the members of the criminal network were based in Spain and Colombia.

On the action day this week, the Colombian National Police arrested individuals playing different major roles within the organisation. Among the six suspects are the alleged ringleader, investors, coordinators of the trafficking operations, corrupted authorities and workers along the logistical chain.

The investigation uncovered that the targeted drug cartel was capable of exporting significant amounts of cocaine through commercial vessels. The suspects used different maritime routes. They concealed cocaine inside containers and then shipped the cargo to European ports from several Colombian harbours, such as Cartagena and Barranquilla.

Maritime trafficking and commercial vessels play a crucial role in the large-scale exportation of narcotics. The ring members collaborated with corrupted authorities to avoid police and custom controls during the different phases of the cocaine trafficking. Identifying and intercepting the corrupted officials was crucial in dismantling the full chain of command and logistical organisation of this cartel. Large-scale drug trafficking requires complex logistical organisation, drug cartels tend to corrupt authorities to facilitate drug trafficking along the different phases, from production to exportation.
