I know my tax dollars fund unspeakable horrors around the world every day. I am particularly devastated by how, as a US queer Jew, my government is funding the atrocities perpetrated by the government of Israel in Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and throughout land occupied now and in the past, in my name. Growing up in a Jewish family, in a Jewish community, I learned the power of ritual, love and familial care. I also learned how powerfully information could be constrained in the service of shaping our understanding of past, present and future. This inspired me to study historiography in college and to question how history and narrative are told. And I try to do that every day.
I have spent much of my adult life criticizing the US government. I am told, as a queer and trans person, that I should be grateful because elsewhere around the world I would be killed for being who I am. And now, as US queer Jews call out the horrors of Israel’s war and genocide of Palestinians, we are told that we must defend Israel for the sake of our queerness. Just as I cannot abide violence done in my name as a Jew, I cannot abide that pinkwashing. There will be no queer and trans justice that erases the violence of empire. The US enacts violence against queer people all over the world and domestically. There are queer and trans people living and loving and resisting in Gaza just as there are in every place we terrorize with our military.
I love my Jewishness, my queerness, my transness, fully. That love, and the grief that comes with loss and fear, cannot be weaponized to legitimize violence.
