Prominent scientists among victims of New Year's Day drone attack in Kyiv

January 2, 2025 1:04 AM

The two victims killed in Russia's Jan. 1 drone strike on Kyiv were a married couple who both worked as scientists, Education and Science Minister Oksen Lisovyi announced.

Prominent neurobiologist Ihor Zyma and doctor of biological sciences Olesia Sokur were killed in the attack, Lisovyi said on Facebook. Zyma and Sokur were married.

"The family devoted almost their entire lives to science," Lisovyi said.

Zyma was a senior researcher and associate professor at the Institute for Biology and Medicine at the Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv.

Sokur also worked at the Institute as a deputy director of scientific work and a member of the Academic Council.

"My sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of the deceased, as well as to all who suffered from today's morning terror," Lisovyi said.

Russia launched a drone attack on Kyiv on the morning of Jan. 1, killing two people and injuring six others, including two pregnant women.

The attack also damaged a building of the National Bank of Ukraine.

Russia's full-scale invasion has taken a severe toll on Ukraine's scientific community.

According to a study published by the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) on Dec. 11, 23.5 percent of scientists still living in Ukraine have lost access to critical input for their research, and 20.8 percent cannot physically access their institution.

Yemen Intensifies Operations – Second US Drone Downed in 72 Hours

January 1, 2025

The Yemeni Armed Forces shot down an American MQ-9 drone while it was conducting “hostile missions in the airspace” of the Marib province, spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree announced on Wednesday.

“The aircraft was shot down with a locally-made surface-to-air missile,” Saree said.

He added that this was “the second plane that our air defenses have been able to shoot down within 72 hours and the fourteenth of its type” in its efforts to support the Palestinian struggle against Israeli occupation.

The YAF, affiliated with the Ansarallah movement, has vowed to continue their operations in support of Gaza and that “these operations will not stop until the aggression on Gaza stops and the siege is lifted.”

‘Technologically Advanced’

On Saturday, the YAF also shot down an American MQ-9 drone with a locally made surface-to-air missile while “it was carrying out hostile missions” in the skies of al-Bayda Governorate.

The armed forces also announced that it had targeted Israel’s Nevatim air base situated in the Negev region in the south using a Palestine-2 hypersonic ballistic missile.

In a recent article, the Washington Post cited an Israeli official as saying that the Yemeni Armed Forces was “more technologically advanced than perceived by many” and should not be “underrated.”

Prisons in England and Wales record rapid rise in drones delivering drugs

Wed 1 Jan 2025 11.00 EST

Prisons will need more money to combat the rapid rise in drones delivering drugs, the head of an influential Commons committee has said, as figures showed the number of aerial incursions predicted to have tripled in two years.

A freedom of information request by the Guardian found there were 1,296 drone incidents at prisons in England and Wales in the 10 months to the end of October 2024, a tenfold increase since 2020.

The Labour chair of the Commons justice committee, Andy Slaughter, said the figures should “set alarm bells ringing” about prison security.

“We wouldn’t be having these increases in incidents if the Prison Service was on top of it. Clearly they are playing catch up,” he said.

“It’s particularly galling that organised crime and whoever is operating the drones are effectively steps ahead … of the people who are supposed to be keeping prisons secure.”

With an average of about 130 drone incidents a month, the number of incursions is expected to have increased to more than 1,550 by the end of 2024 – more than triple the 478 incidents in 2022.

Given that many drone deliveries happen at night under the cover of darkness, the true figure is believed to be far higher.

HM chief inspector of prisons, Charlie Taylor, said last month that the surge in the use of large unmanned aerial vehicles was his “number one concern” and had increased the possibility that firearms would be used to settle turf wars or in attempts to escape.

A recent report by Taylor’s inspectors into HMP Garth, near Leyland in Lancashire, said so many drones were flying to the prison at night to deliver contraband to cell windows that an inmate had compared it to an airport.

The drugs trade in prisons is so lucrative that gangs are headhunting highly skilled drone pilots from the non-criminal world to ferry their cargo to cell windows.

The more sophisticated drones, worth several thousand pounds, are about a metre wide and equipped with thermal imaging, allowing them to transport several kilogrammes of illicit goods under the cover of darkness.

The scale of aerial deliveries continued to grow in 2024 despite laws introduced last January that made it a criminal offence to fly drones within 400 metres of any closed prison or young offender institution in England and Wales.

Drone operators that break the rules could face fines of up to £2,500, while those found smuggling illicit items face up to 10 years in prison.

Some prisons have introduced counter-drone technology to detect when unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are nearby, but few if any are thought to actively block the devices from approaching.

The crumbling state of many prisons has made it easier to make often-brazen deliveries to cells, where inmates use broomsticks and other devices to “fish” in contraband through easily breached windows.

The cross-party Commons justice committee launched an inquiry last month into tackling drugs in prisons, with one area of focus the sharp increase in drone deliveries.

Slaughter described the incursions as a “pretty fundamental breach of security” that would need more money to fix.

“There’s going to be cost to it, whether that comes out of the increased maintenance budgets or whether it has to come from other means,” he said.

“It would be a shame if you’re diverting funds from other things such as rehabilitation, staffing, conditions and maintenance generally in prisons, because they are in an appalling state.

“But … before you do anything else, you have to make sure that your prisoners are secure and so this is going to have to be a priority.”

Slaughter said his inquiry would examine whether sophisticated technology such as signal blockers, which would prevent drones from entering prison airspace, could be used.

“Within a short period of time we have to have a solution. You do feel that prisons, as so often, are a Cinderella service, and if this was an issue – as it has been – around an airport or a military facility it would be dealt with,” he said.

A government spokesperson said: “The availability of drugs and other illicit items in prisons is evidence of the crisis in our prisons that the new government inherited.

“We are working with the police to deter, detect and disrupt the growing illegal use of drones around prisons. Our Crime in Prisons taskforce will bear down on drugs in jails further, including tackling serious and organised crime.”

Russia Launches Mass Drone Attack on Ukraine To Begin 2025

Jan 02, 2025 at 4:39 AM EST

Russia's launch of a mass drone attack on Ukraine at the start of the new year is significant because it may escalate tensions between the warring countries.

Moscow conducted attacks on both Christmas and New Year's, not halting for the holidays. Moreover, it signifies Russia's commitment to the war as it approaches its fourth year in February.

The Ukrainian Air Force managed to largely repel Russia's launch of the barrage of Shahed drones and other UAVs on New Year's Eve, as they shot down 63 drones and 46 more failed to reach their targets.

Ukraine utilized aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups to repel the drones launched from Bryansk, Orel, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, and Crimea.

The Ukrainian Air Force also noted that the 46 enemy drones that failed to reach their target were lost in location, and two more flew to Russia and Belarus.

Wreckage from one of the Russian drones fell on a residential building in Kyiv on the morning of January 1, causing a fire to break out and the deaths of two people, according to the Kyiv City Military Administration.

The two victims of the Russian drone attack on New Year's were a married couple, neurobiologist Ihor Zyma and doctor of biological sciences Olesia Sokur, according to Ukraine's Education and Science Minister Oksen Lisovyi's post on Facebook.

Both Zyma and Sokur worked at the Institute of Biology and Medicine at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

Shahed drones are Iranian-made UAVs, also referred to as "kamikaze drones," and can be fitted with thermobaric warheads. They have been used extensively in strikes on Ukraine.

The use of Shahed drones has increased risks of civilian casualties for both Russia and Ukraine, and Iran has previously denied allegations that it has sent the drones to Moscow.

Zelensky wrote on Telegram: "Even on New Year's Eve, Russia was only concerned about how to hurt Ukraine. One hundred and eleven strike drones against our cities.

Most of them did not reach their targets thanks to our air defense systems, our mobile fire groups and electronic warfare systems. But, unfortunately, at this time, one person is known to have died.

My condolences to the family and friends. There are also victims and destruction. All services are involved.

And I am grateful to everyone who, regardless of the circumstances, every night and every day on duty, at work, protects Ukraine and Ukrainians.

Our army, which holds back the assaults. Rescuers, who are ready to help anywhere in Ukraine. All emergency services, our medics, each and every one whose job is to save lives. Thank you!"

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Tymofiy Mylovanov, the president of the Kyiv School of Economics, wrote:

"Russia celebrates the New Year by hitting Kyiv just meters away from the Office of the President, the National Bank, and the Cabinet of Ministers. It is a very clear signal—surrender or we kill you."

Michael MacKay, a pro-Ukraine X user, wrote: "Russians ring in the New Year with a massive terrorist attack on Europe. Strike UAVs are in the air over 10 regions of Ukraine."

City of Yuma launches live interactive drone map

Jan. 2, 2025 at 5:21 AM PST

A southern Arizona city has launched a new public interactive drone map that shows where their city-owned drones are operating.

The City of Yuma has 12 drones in its fleet that are used for building and engineering inspections, traffic, and fire investigations, special events, and training exercises.

City officials said the map is publicly accessible because they want residents to know what’s going on in their skies.

“It’s an interactive drone map, and the purpose of this is the City of Yuma is all about transparency,” Yuma spokesperson Jen Miller said.

“There is no federal mandate that says we have to share this information, but we believe in transparency.

We believe in informing our public about official city drone activity, so now they can determine is that a city-owned drone or someone else’s.”

Drone crisis is 'just the beginning' as expert warns 'big announcement due in 30 days'

14:09, 1 Jan 2025

The drone crisis that's been causing a stir across the eastern US shows no signs of abating.

Hundreds of mysterious drones have been sighted in the skies recently, mainly over New Jersey but also reaching as far as New York and Connecticut.

Despite officials' attempts to reassure the public that these unidentified objects pose no threat to national security, their unknown origins continue to fuel wild speculation.

Some suggest they're on the hunt for "nuclear warheads", while others believe they could be the property of foreign superpowers.

More ominously, some observers reckon this wave of sightings is just the tip of the iceberg – with something major expected within the next few weeks.

UFO expert Dr. Steven Greer has suggested that these strange lights seen worldwide are part of a staged operation designed to trick the public into believing an alien invasion is imminent.

Speaking to Newsmax's Rob Finnerty, Dr Greer predicted that the situation will escalate "in the next 30 days or so".

He believes the supposed "alien invasion" is a cover-up to hide the real truth about extraterrestrial encounters, which he alleges have been happening for several decades.

According to him, alien technology has fallen into the hands of US weapons manufacturers, who have initiated an operation to keep the conspiracy under wraps, reports the Express US.

He asserts: "We have a team of about six different black sites that have been running illegal projects related to so-called UAPs and UFOs.

"Coming forward in the next 30 days or so, they will bring forth positive evidence of this and the fact that these programs have been run illegally and outside of constitutional oversight."

It's quite the bold statement, one that aligns with various commentators' forecasts that by early 2025, there'll be a significant shift in how the public is informed about UFOs.

Ross Coulthart – who's become synonymous with the "UFO disclosure" campaign – has predicted that "all hell is going to break loose" as the new year ticks in, calling it"the calm before the storm".

Despite the buzz, the enigmatic drones remain an unsolved riddle. U.S. Government honchos confess their ignorance regarding who controls these supposed drones, whilst simultaneously assuring there's no risk at play.

Coupled with President-elect Donald Trump revealing that the US government has deep insights into the drone debacle, it seems clear that, regardless of what reality holds, incoming 2025 promises to be one heck of a rollercoaster for enthusiasts and skeptics alike.

Derbyshire council leader believes there is ‘life out there’ after UFO speculation

Updated17:04, 31 DEC 2024

A council leader leader believes there ‘must be life out there’ after UFO speculation linked to unexplained drone sightings at US air force bases.

Derbyshire County Council's Cllr Barry Lewis has welcomed more ‘open-minded discussion’ about the possibility of UFOs – unidentified flying objects – or UAPs – Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena – even though there are others who will still not entertain discussing the subject.

The Conservative councillor stated on his X account he has been following the ‘drone flap’ after suspected drone incursions were reported at three US air force bases in the UK including RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath, in Suffolk, and RAF Feltwell, in Norfolk, with further similar sightings over multiple states in the USA including New Jersey.

Cllr Lewis stated: “I’ve been following with no small amount of fascination the ‘drone flap’ happening in America, in particular around New Jersey, and here recently over our US / UK airbases, such as at Lakenheath, and like many who’ve been following, I’ve been wondering what on earth is going on?”

He added there has been a change in the way this phenomena is being discussed and that ‘disclosure is the new thing’ with the release of more incident footage and ‘whistleblowing’ by former credible US military intelligence and federal intelligence employees with backing from senators and congressmen and women.

Cllr Lewis said this has led to ‘fascinating’ disclosure hearings with some exploring whether governments have captured craft and have been ‘reverse engineering’ them with defence contractors leading to more open discussion.

But he added: “And whilst there’s still some reticence by some press outlets and reporters and governments – or individuals within for fear of looking a bit ‘out there’ – perhaps understandably, about discussing openly or reporting without fear or favour, there is at least a more open-minded discussion about UAPs.

Indeed short of a tracked interstellar craft landing on the White House lawn and little green men popping out of it for a chat, there will be those who won’t ever entertain the idea of UAPs.”

Cllr Lewis referred to a long history of the unexplained and he suggested that extraordinary phenomena may even display ‘trans-medium capabilities’ or the ability to operate in space, in the earth’s atmosphere and sea in ways that deny any current understanding of physics.

He also mentions Professor Avi Loeb’s declaration that one sighting in our solar system may have been a possible craft leading to Loeb’s Galileo Project which was an active search for physical evidence of intelligent, interstellar visitors.

Cllr Lewis also cited other numerous programmes including the Breakthrough Initiatives funded by Russian billionaire Yuri Milner and which were launched in 2015 in partnership with Professor Stephen Hawking. He added:

“All of this is fascinating. Advances in telescope technology, such as large arrays and the James Webb project and better probes and missions seeking evidence for life within our own solar system all make it feel like – WHEN we discover alien life, not IF.

“And UAPs raise the question, is intelligent alien life already, if somewhat enigmatically, interacting with us?

And if there are extraordinary craft on this earth, as there may well seem to be, are they indeed alien or are they of this world?”

In addition, Cllr Lewis said: “The key thing I suppose is the realisation that we live in an unquantifiably vast and unimaginably old universe and there must be other life out there.

“There’s lots of speculation and I hope the evidence and disclosures process does shed light, if indeed there is light to shed, on these topics.

That brings me back to the ‘drones’ especially over New Jersey, clearly many of the sightings are familiar drones, some are clearly planes and helicopters, but there are certainly ‘drones’ and other objects that defy standard explanations.”

Folklorist and journalist Dr David Clarke, who is also an Associate Professor at Sheffield Hallam University, believes the ‘panic’ about drones is ‘mass hysteria’ and they are most likely aircraft sightings.

However, he believes that people should never be chastised for searching for answers to the unexplained and many ‘pillars of the British establishment’ over the years have unashamedly pressed for explanations including Lord Mountbatten and Lord Peter Hill Norton.

Dr Clarke said: “I think it is a legitimate topic for discussion and we should have hopefully got past the taboo made of this because lots of people think it is an issue that should be addressed by the Government.”

He added politicians have been discussing UFOs for years and the subject has been raised constantly in the House of Lords.

Official UFO files were also released online by The National Archives in 2009 as part of a three-year project between the Ministry of Defence and the National Archives aimed at opening up the records to the world.

The US Department of Defense also has an All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office which states that its mission is to minimize technological and intelligence surprise by detection, identification and mitigation of unidentified anomalous phenomena.

But Dr Clarke told how discussing and reporting UFOs unfortunately does not always go well and without consequences for some high profile figures.

He told how in the 1990’s the former Chairman of Carlisle FC Michael Knighton suffered repercussions after he had reported seeing an an unidentified flying object – simply something in the sky that he could not explain.

Mr Knighton has stated on his website how he was unfairly and wrongly ridiculed in the media and he subsequently even threatened to resign the chairmanship of Carlisle United FC.

Scientists SOLVE the mystery of 'alien' signal received from outer space

Updated: 09:11 EST, 2 Jan 2025

Scientists have finally discovered the mysterious origins of an 'alien' signal received from outer space.

In 2022, a radio telescope detected a burst of energy coming from a galaxy about 200 million light-years from Earth.

Although the burst only lasted milliseconds, it contained enough energy to outshine entire galaxies and was theorised to have been a signal from an advanced alien civilisation.

Now, scientists from MIT have discovered that this 'fast radio burst' (FRB) originated from a small area extremely close to a rotating neutron star, the ultra-dense remains of a dead sun.

The researchers argue that the burst must have come from the layer of powerful magnetic fields surrounding the star known as the magnetosphere.

Although thousands of FRBs have been detected, this is the first time that astronomers have been able to pin down the origin of one of these mysterious signals.

Co-author Professor Kiyoshi Masui says: 'Around these highly magnetic neutron stars, also known as magnetars, atoms can't exist — they would just get torn apart by the magnetic fields.

'The exciting thing here is, we find that the energy stored in those magnetic fields, close to the source, is twisting and reconfiguring such that it can be released as radio waves that we can see halfway across the universe.'

Neutron stars are formed when a star about seven to 19 times the size of our sun explodes in a violent supernova, leaving behind a dense core of compressed matter.

Although they are only a few miles wide, these alien stars contain up to twice as much matter as the sun.

These stellar cores are so dense that a sugar cube-sized chunk of neutron star material would weigh one billion tonnes on Earth - making them the densest objects we can directly observe.

Surrounding these strange worlds are violent magnetic fields which can be trillions of times stronger than those surrounding the Earth.

Since the first FRB was spotted in 2007, researchers have detected thousands of these brief but intense bursts everywhere from our own galaxy to 8 billion light-years away.

Although these bursts don't contain enough energy to be dangerous, they have presented scientists with a perplexing mystery.

Some scientists have suggested that these could be created by the powerful magnetic fields surrounding distant neutron stars - but not all astronomers agree.

Lead researcher Dr Kenzie Nimmo says: 'In these environments of neutron stars, the magnetic fields are really at the limits of what the universe can produce.

'There's been a lot of debate about whether this bright radio emission could even escape from that extreme plasma.'

Some models suggest that the bursts of energy are formed in the turbulent magnetosphere while others argue that they originate from much farther out as part of a shockwave coming from the star itself.

In their study, published in Nature, the researchers focused on a radio pulse spotted in 2022 by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME).

Using four large radio receivers shaped like half pipes, scientists detected a two-millisecond pulse which was named FRB 20221022A.

Based on the highly polarised light that the FRB produced, the researchers worked out that its source is very likely to be rotating - something that has been seen in fast-spinning neutron stars called pulsars.

But to figure out exactly where FRB 20221022A originated, Dr Nimmo and her co-authors looked at a property called 'scintillation'.

If you see a star in the night sky from Earth, it appears to twinkle or 'scintillate' because the light from the star is filtered through gasses in the atmosphere.

Yet this effect doesn't just affect stargazers since light from any small, bright source will be bent as it passes through an obstruction like the gasses surrounding a galaxy.

The smaller and farther away the source of light is the more it scintillates, which is why planets like Jupiter and Mars don't appear to twinkle when you see them.

If the FRB originated from a shockwave tens of millions of kilometres from the neutron star the area of origin would be so large that researchers wouldn't expect to see any scintillation at all.

But when Dr Nimmo and her colleagues analysed the energy from FRB 20221022A they saw that the mysterious flash was twinkling like a star in the sky.

Dr Nimmo says: 'This means that the FRB is probably within hundreds of thousands of kilometres from the source.'

By identifying the gas cloud that the flash must have passed through, the researchers were able to zoom in on its origin within unprecedented accuracy.

Although the FRB emerged from a galaxy more than ten times the distance to our nearest neighbouring galaxy, the researchers found that its source was an area just 10,000km (6,200 miles) wide.

For comparison, that is equivalent to the distance from Edinburgh to Cape Town, South Africa.

Professor Masui says: 'Zooming in to a 10,000-kilometer region, from a distance of 200 million light years, is like being able to measure the width of a DNA helix, which is about 2 nanometers wide, on the surface of the moon.'

New Paradigm Institute Launches Public Call to Action Demanding Congress Establish Select Committee on UFOs/UAP

January 2, 2025

The New Paradigm Institute (NPI) calls on citizens nationwide to demand Congressional action to establish a Select Committee on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP).

According to the group, a dedicated Congressional committee is essential to ensure transparency, accountability, and meaningful oversight on a topic shrouded in secrecy for too long.

According to NPI, the truth about non-human intelligence (NHI) and UAP has been hidden by certain Executive Branch agencies from public view and Congressional oversight for decades.

They claim that this veil of secrecy not only stifles scientific progress but also undermines the democratic principles that govern our nation.

“Scientific breakthroughs capable of addressing humanity’s most pressing challenges, including the climate, energy, and technology, are being sequestered, available only to an unaccountable few,” said Daniel Sheehan, Chief Counsel of the New Paradigm Institute.

“We deserve the truth, and we deserve it now.”

Since 2022, Congress has held multiple hearings on UFOs/UAP and introduced the UAP Disclosure Act, yet these incremental efforts have fallen short, according to the leaders of NPI.

They say that the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), in its March 2024 report, failed to deliver the transparency it promised, leaving critical questions unanswered.

Meanwhile, whistleblowers with knowledge of crash retrieval programs and reverse-engineering initiatives remain unprotected by effective legislation, unable to testify without fear of reprisal.

The New Paradigm Institute urges all Americans to visit https://newparadigminstitute.org/take-action/establish-a-select-committee-to-investigate-uap/ and contact their elected representatives in Washington, DC.

Using the Institute’s online platform, citizens can send messages directly to Congress demanding the formation of a Select Committee on UAP.

A Select Committee on UAP would:

Hold accountable those withholding critical information about NHI and UAP.

Strengthen whistleblower protections to ensure safe and truthful testimony.

Restore public trust in government oversight and transparency.

Reveal what the federal government knows about NHI and UAP to the world.

“The American people have a right to the truth, and Congress has a duty to deliver it,” Sheehan added.

“This is not just about UAP—it’s about accountability, scientific progress, and democracy itself.”

Robbie Williams could be venturing into otherworldly matters as the 'Angels' singer is being eyed to become the UK's face of UFOs.

Prominent ufologist and filmmaker Mark Christopher Lee is keen on having Robbie serve as an ambassador for any interstellar visitors.

According to the Daily Star, Robbie isn't new to extraterrestrial phenomena, once experiencing a UFO sighting so close he reckoned he could have hit it with a tennis ball.

He also encountered a 'gold ball of light' while working on his alien-themed track 'Arizona'.

Mark - who claims his new documentary to be released later this year will prove aliens exist - thinks the former Take That star would make an ideal ET ambassador as his fame means he can spread the message of their existence.

George Knapp, Nevada's Channel 8 I-Team's chief investigative reporter and the man behind 'Hunt For The Skinwalker', which featured Robbie, has been enlisted by Mark to reach out to Robbie, who grew up in Tunstall and Burslem.

He expressed: "I do believe what Robbie says. I've spoken to George Knapp, who is friends with him, who is a filmmaker, presenter, journalist. We were chatting about Robbie Williams.

"I'm trying to reach out to Robbie to push forward for UFO disclosure in the UK. I think he could be a figurehead. We need someone like him in the UK. I want to get together and talk about how we can do that."

Mark delved into the intriguing connection between musicians and UFOs, stating: "People love Robbie, he speaks the truth, he's from the heart. And there is this link between musicians and UFOs. I do think there is that element.

"I think it's the part of the brain that we're using, that creative side, which is making that contact and what these phenomena is picking up on. It's the collective unconscious. We're all connected and connected to the universe and beyond."

Robbie's encounters with the unknown span over three decades. Mark believes these experiences persist because Robbie has allowed himself to be receptive to such contact.

He further explained: "It's the collective unconscious. We're all connected and connected to the universe and beyond. There's the synchronicities in your life - meaningful coincidences."
