Lithium batteries develop dendrites, microscopic short-circuits that reduce the battery's capacity over time. Eventually, enough shorts are created to start the battery overheating and leading to thermal runaway. There's also solvents and lots of flammable stuff inside lithium batteries.

When a lithium battery swells up, it's not long before it will ignite or explode. There's enough iPhones, laptops and other portable electronics to support that. Fun fact - lithium fires are notoriously difficult to put out.
