I've missed a few breads, forgive me if this has been mentioned.

 

In the last few months, every single day we saw a steady bombardment of (ahem) "contrails" clogging up the sky. I don't think I'd ever seen it so thick and consistent. The air quality has been awful with multiple advisories recently. Very dry in our rainy season.

 

The "contrails" have completely disappeared as of the day the fires started. Not even a small hint of exhaust from jets anywhere, just clear blue anywhere there isn't smoke.

 

Another amazing coincidence. Also, several overnight explosions being reported all around. Much louder than transformers, this morning there was one near me and it sounded almost like cannon fire.

In Germany, where right-wing AfD party is poised to break the ‘firewall’ and ascend to power, the now-favorite candidate for Chancellor has endorsed this policy, pledging to carry out mass deportations of illegals when it enters government next month.

 

The Telegraph reported:

“Announcing her party’s election manifesto, Alice Weidel said Germany would witness “repatriations on a large scale” and a “total closing of Germany’s borders” in the party’s first 100 days in power if elected.

 

The AfD’s candidate for chancellor used the controversial term “remigration” to describe the policy during a speech to supporters in Riesa, a small town in eastern Germany that has seen a series of anti-AfD protests in recent days.”

 

The term refers to the return of migrants to their place of origin – in some cases, meant to apply to migrants regardless of their citizenship status.

 

“’If this must be called ‘remigration’, then let it be called ‘remigration’’, she said as the crowd cheered in response, while protesters jeered outside the town hall.

Over 25,000 acres are ablaze in Los Angeles in the Pacific Palisades fire, a veritable living hell.

 

Some 12,000-plus structures were incinerated. More than 250,000 souls have been evacuated and are in need of shelter.

 

No one has really taken charge yet. And now even the woke culprits for the catastrophe are blame-gaming each other to determine who was the more incompetent, which in this case translates to the most woke.

 

No one knows how many have died; all know the number will escalate in the next few days.

 

The eventual price tag of the ruin will exceed $200-300 billion and outstrip the billions of dollars given to Ukraine.

 

And there are still some fires that are completely uncontained.

 

The Los Angeles apocalypse was a multisystem, green-woke collapse—and a disastrous reminder that when Soviet-style, anti-meritocratic ideology permeates all aspects of modern life in California, disaster is inevitable.

 

First, note that the culprit of the catastrophe is not climate change; it is not Donald Trump. Those are excuses for arrogant incompetency and disdain for the public. And it is not racism or homophobia to fault those who paraded and virtue signaled their tribal identities so extraneous to their actual responsibilities for public safety.

 

Note that all California statewide officeholders are left-wing. The California left holds supermajorities in both houses of the state legislature. Only 17 percent of California’s huge congressional delegation of 52 seats is Republican. California’s judiciary is the most left-wing in the country. There is not a single Republican on the 15-member Los Angeles City Council.

No matter how it may seem, with its twists and turns … and as those in Power know not which way to turn … YOU … THE LIGHT THAT YOU ARE … shall assist in keeping the Vibration High whilst all is taking place.

 

You may feel a little helpless in the big scheme of things … and yet … within the big scheme of things … it is YOU that is playing such an important part.

 

It is YOU … as you remain in your POWER, that makes the difference to the Energies that need to remain at a certain frequency.

New interim leaders for NASA astrophysics and planetary science

Retirements and reassignments have led to a reshuffling of leadership in part of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.

At a Jan. 12 meeting of three astrophysics committees during the 245th Meeting of the American Astronomical Society, Mark Clampin, director of NASA’s astrophysics division, announced he was now serving as acting deputy associate administrator for the science directorate.

He replaces Sandra Connelly, who NASA said last fall was planning to retire at the end of the year.

 

Clampin said he accepted the one-year assignment to support the Science Mission Directorate during the transition to the new Trump administration.

“They are very intense and take a lot of work,” he said of such transitions, recalling his experience in a previous position as director of science at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

“I thought that the opportunity to assist [NASA Associate Administrator for Science] Nicky Fox as we go through this period was something that would overall contribute to the science that NASA does.”

 

Replacing Clampin as NASA astrophysics director for that one-year period will be Shawn Domagal-Goldman, deputy director of the science and exploration directorate at Goddard.

He noted at the same meeting that he is in “day negative seven” of the position, which he formally starts next week.

 

He acknowledged that he and other officials in the astrophysics division were dealing with “uncertainty and change” amid the presidential transition.

“Every layer of management, from them all the way to the top of the federal government, is going to undergo change in some way over the next month, and a lot of uncertainty, too.”

 

The change in NASA’s astrophysics division comes days after a similar change in its planetary science division, or PSD.

In a Jan. 9 community letter, Fox announced that the agency has hired Louise Prockter as acting planetary science division director, starting in the spring.

Prockter has been the chief scientist for the space exploration sector at the Applied Physics Laboratory and previously was director of the Lunar and Planetary Institute.

 

The leadership of the planetary science division had been in flux since last May, when longtime director Lori Glaze took what was to be a six-month detail as acting deputy associate administrator in NASA’s Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate (ESDMD).

However, in November, NASA announced that Glaze would remain in that position in ESDMD permanently.

 

During the detail, Gina DiBraccio, deputy director of the heliophysics division at Goddard, served as acting planetary science director.

Fox said at a town hall meeting during the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union in December that DiBraccio’s detail could not be extended and that she had returned to Goddard.

In addition, Eric Ianson, deputy director of the planetary science division, announced his retirement at the end of the year.

 

That meant that Charles Webb, who had just been hired to succeed Ianson as planetary science deputy director, was almost immediately pressed into the role of acting division director.

Fox said at the town hall that Webb would be acting director for a “short period” before bringing on someone for a one-year detail.

 

“Louise’s deep planetary science and organizational leadership experience uniquely qualifies her for this critical leadership position,” Fox wrote in the letter.

“There are multiple major challenges in PSD that require a highly experienced leader to navigate, including the future direction of Mars Sample Return, ensuring Dragonfly is ready for launch in 2028, and confirmation of NASA’s contribution to the ESA Rosalind Franklin Mars rover mission.”

Fox, in the community letter, confirmed comments at the earlier town hall that the agency will conduct a competition to find a permanent division director.

Chinese sea launch sends 10 navigation enhancement satellites into orbit

China launched a Jielong-3 solid rocket from a mobile sea platform late Sunday, successfully placing 10 Centispace navigation enhancement satellites into orbit.

The fifth Jielong-3 (Smart Dragon-3) solid propellant rocket lifted off at 10:00 p.m. Eastern, Jan. 12 (0300 UTC, Jan. 13) from a specially converted sea barge off the coast of Haiyang city, in the Eastern province of Shandong.

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) announced launch success more than two hours after liftoff.

 

The flight carried 10 Microcentispace-01 (Weili Kongjian group 01) navigation enhancement satellites for commercial company Future Navigation, full name Beijing Future Navigation Technology Co., Ltd.

The low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites are designed to augment GNSS signals from systems including Beidou and GPS to provide higher precision navigation services.

 

The Centispace system is designed to feature 190 satellites in LEO at various altitudes and inclinations, along with a ground segment consisting of monitoring stations.

Stated applications include autonomous driving, precision agriculture, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and assisting in emergency response and disaster management.

 

The Jielong-3 rocket was developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), a subsidiary of CASC, the country’s state-owned main space contractor.

The four-stage rocket is operated by China Rocket, a commercial spinoff from CASC.

 

It has a length of approximately 31 meters, a weight of 140 tons at liftoff. Its payload capacity of 1,560 kg to a 500 km Sun-synchronous orbit was increased to 1,600 kg for this flight.

“In the future, the Smart Dragon-3 rocket will undergo further improvements and upgrades to reduce the cost for the commercial launches and increase its carrying capacity,” Gao Lijun from CASC told China Central Television (CCTV).

“We estimate that after the improvements, its carrying capacity will rise from 1.5 tons to about 2 tons,” Gao said.

 

The launch was carried out using facilities belonging to the Haiyang Eastern spaceport for sea launches.

The spaceport plans more than 10 for 2025, having conducted six sea launches in 2024. Officials said in a recent Chinese media report that the spaceport aims to support 100 launches per year starting from 2027.

China launched 68 times in total last year, setting a new national record.

 

The launch was China’s second orbital launch attempt of 2025 and the second success.

The mission follows a Long March 3B launch which sent a satellite servicing spacecraft towards geostationary orbit Jan. 6.

 

CASC has yet to publish an overview of China’s overall plans for the year, but it may once again attempt to reach around 100 launches, as targeted for 2024.

Major missions for 2025 include crewed Shenzhou and Tianzhou cargo missions to the Tiangong space station and the Tianwen-2 near-Earth asteroid sample return mission.

The latter is expected to launch around May.

Space Force will play a role in the 60th presidential inauguration, a historic first for the youngest branch

Space Force guardians will participate fully in the 60th Presidential Inauguration on Jan. 20 in Washington, a significant milestone for the youngest branch of the military which was created during president-elect Donald Trump’s first administration.

Forty-five guardians from across the country arrived recently at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling for training to augment the U.S. Space Force Honor Guard and march alongside units during the presidential inauguration: the Air Force Band, U.S. Air Force Academy, active-duty Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserves.

 

“This is a great opportunity for guardians to get out on their marks and represent their service in front of a global audience,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. David McLellan, commander of the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard, who oversees U.S. Space Force Honor Guard training.

“This is actually the first time in the Space Force’s five-year history that they have been able to fully represent their service in a presidential inauguration.”

 

The guardians will go through an intensive 12-day training period, during which they will get instruction to master the fundamentals of serving in an honor guard.

They will learn precision movements, military drill procedures and ceremonial protocol.

 

“These members truly embody the guardian spirit and exemplify the Space Force’s core values,” said Senior Master Sgt. Matthew Massoth, U.S. Space Force Honor Guard senior enlisted leader.

“By stepping up as volunteers, they represent every guardian who has raised their right hand to serve their nation.

 

This opportunity puts them on a global stage to honor their service and our branch’s crucial role in defense.”

Nearly 8,000 National Guard troops will also be present to provide security support during inauguration day at the U.S. Capitol.

Unauthorized drone flights double; 3 arrested during LA fires

Three people have been arrested as unauthorized drone flights have doubled in southern California as firefighters work to contain multiple wildfires that have devastated the LA area.

LA County Sheriff Robert Luna announced Monday that three people were arrested for two drone incidents during a briefing on the fires.

 

The use of unauthorized drones is hindering the ability of firefighters trying to contain the fires that have burned more than 40,000 acres, destroyed more than 12,000 structures and resulted in 24 confirmed deaths.

On Friday, firefighting aircraft trying to contain the Palisades wildfire were forced to leave the area because of unauthorized drones in the air.

 

In an earlier incident Thursday, a Super Scooper aircraft used to drop large quantities of water on fires was damaged after a collision with a small drone.

The incident left a hole in the wing and grounded the plane until it could be fixed.

The FBI is investigating the incident, saying the drone violated temporary airspace restrictions the FAA instituted during the fires.

 

California authorities say there have been at least 40 incidents in which unauthorized drones have forced firefighting aircraft to pause operations, putting more lives at risk as the fires continue to spread and firefighters on the ground are left without air support.

Power outages in Sudan after drone attack on major dam

The seat of Sudan's army-aligned government was without power on Monday, AFP correspondents said, after a drone attack blamed on paramilitaries hit a major hydroelectric dam in the war-torn country's north.

The Sudanese army, at war with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, said in a statement that the attack on Merowe Dam was part of a "systematic campaign" against military sites but also targeting "vital" infrastructure.

 

AFP journalists in Port Sudan on the Red Sea, where the army-aligned government and the United Nations have been based since the war's early days, said widespread power outages have persisted since early Monday.

The army said that Merowe Dam and its power station, located about 350 kilometres (220 miles) north of the capital Khartoum and serving Port Sudan and other areas, were hit by "a number of suicide drones".

 

"Some losses were incurred, which will be repaired," the army statement said.

Online footage, which AFP could not independently verify, showed fires engulfing the dam's electrical infrastructure.

The RSF did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment.

 

Since the early morning attack, local media said that the army-controlled cities of Atbara, Dongola and Omdurman - across the Nile from Khartoum - have also been hit by power outages.

In November last year, the army accused the RSF of targeting Merowe with 16 drones, though no casualties or significant damage were reported at the time.

The dam is one of Sudan's biggest sources of hydroelectric power.

 

Merowe city, in Sudan's Northern State, is also home to a major military airport.

The latest attack came two days after the army recaptured Wad Madani, the capital of the central state of Al-Jazira, after more than a year of paramilitary control.

UFO-like electric flying vehicle which gives passengers 360 degree views could be the next Uber

 

Shaped like a flying saucer, it looks more like a UFO than your next Uber.

 

But this sci-fi style vehicle is in fact the latest in line of electric aircraft set to take to the skies over the next decade.

 

The fully autonomous ‘Invo Moon’ offers up to three passengers a 360-degree panorama above and below as it travels at speeds of up to 250mph.

 

Crucially, it has been designed to be near silent, using a flight system hidden inside its shell rather than relying on noisy exposed propellers like many of its competitors.

 

The £280,000 aircraft - which is the same size and weight of a small family car - will be able to move in any direction, similar to a handheld drone.

 

Inventor Leo Kayali, a former Tesla engineer, told the Daily Mail the design was inspired by the drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci over five centuries ago.

 

The aim is to have it certified by the US aviation authority by 2027 and to launch in ‘all major cities including London’ by the end of the decade.

 

He said future owners could even have it running as an Uber while they weren’t using it and ‘make money while sitting at home’.

 

The government last year announced it expected flying taxis to be ‘routinely’ whizzing around British skies by 2028 - and potentially operating without a pilot by 2030.

 

Ministers set out ambitious plans to overhaul current regulations and infrastructure, with the technology expected to boost the UK by £45bn by the end of the decade.

 

The Invo Moon - which is 16ft in diameter and weighs 2,500lb and - can be pre-ordered for £2,000 and will ultimately cost around £280,000 on delivery.

 

However Mr Kayali believes the vehicles - which he said should be cheap to build when mass produced - could be sold for under £50,000 in the future.

 

While most electric flying vehicles rely on exposed propellors, the Invo Moon keeps everything within the aluminium frame.

 

The vehicle uses a complex new aerodynamic design in which a dozen motors, all containing spinning spheres, are positioned in a circle around the side of the vehicle.

 

Using these motors in groups of four at a time, it can move in any direction 360 degrees, meaning it has no front or back. To land, it extends three retractable legs.

 

Mr Kayali said this means there is very little vibration, so the machine will emit no more than 45 decibels as it travels - about as noisy as the patter of light rain.

 

Most other eVTOLs run at about 85 decibels, equivalent to the sound of a blender, and also create a lot of unnecessary excess wind, he said.

 

Inside the cabin, there are three rotating and fully reclinable heated seats which offer views out the top and the bottom through the plexiglass windows.

 

The “luxury” vehicle will also feature mood lighting, an ice machine, and smart TVs.

 

It has a range up to 300 miles, and takes no more than 30 minutes to charge from 20 per cent to 80 per cent, Mr Kayali claims.

 

While the design might seem futuristic, it is in fact based on concepts first invented by Da Vinci in the 1480s.

 

The exterior is inspired by the Italian artist’s ‘Armoured Car’ drawings, while the internal flying mechanism is a new interpretation of his ‘aerial screw’ design, considered a precursor of the helicopter.

Musk has been increasingly critical of Starmer on his platform X in recent weeks, saying that he is running a "tyrannical government" from which the US may have to "free the people of the UK".

 

Among other things, he called the British Prime Minister "evil" and accused him of "complicity in the rape of Great Britain" due to Starmer's alleged role in covering up the scandal surrounding the "grooming gangs", while he was the head of the prosecutor's office from 2008 to 2013.

 

These gangs, mostly made up of Pakistani men, had been targeting white British girls for about two decades. The British authorities have done nothing against them for reasons of political correctness, according to several government and media reports.

 

Last week, Starmer hit back, calling Musk's claims "lies and misinformation" and accusing the tech billionaire of spreading the "poison of the far right". On Thursday, the Financial Times reported that Musk is reportedly considering a campaign to oust the British prime Minister from office by undermining his approval ratings. The sources of the newspaper claimed that the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla discussed such plans privately with his allies, because he believes that "Western civilization itself is under threat".

The Sacramento River is the largest river in California.

California has been called the most hydrologically altered landmass on the planet, and it is true. Today the state bears little resemblance to its former self. Where deserts and grasslands once prevailed, now reservoirs store water to move it to the arid land. Swampy marshes have given way to landfill for urban development. Wetlands have been converted to farmland. California’s water resources now support 35 million people and irrigate more than 5.68 million acres of farmland.

 

As a result of the development of the state’s natural resources, especially water, California has emerged as a leading agricultural producer, a major manufacturing center, the most populated state in the country and the eighth largest economy in the world.

 

However, this intensive development has not been without its consequences. Fish populations have been depleted. Wetlands have been drained. Dams and levees have altered natural water flow patterns. Invasive plants and species are changing ecosystems and altering native habitat. Species of many native plants and wildlife have declined or become extinct, and water quality has been impaired by agriculture, ranching, mining and urban sources.

 

Much of California has a “Mediterranean” climate, characterized by warm, dry summers and mild winters. Most of the precipitation falls in the winter as rain and snow. Although the climate is variable, the state receives about 200 million acre-feet of precipitation per year on average. An acre-foot of water equals about 326,000 gallons, or enough water to cover an acre of land (the size of a football field) 1 foot deep. One acre-foot is enough water to meet the annual indoor and outdoor needs of two households.

 

About 60 percent of all precipitation evaporates or is transpired by trees and vegetation. What’s left is roughly 75 million acre-feet per average year that flows into waterways and groundwater aquifers and ultimately becomes available to use in homes, as irrigation for farmland, by industry and in the environment.

 

There’s a catch. While parts of Northern California receive 100 inches or more of precipitation per year, the state’s southern, drier areas receive less precipitation – and just a few inches of rain annually in the desert regions. That means 75 percent of California’s available water is in the northern third of the state (north of Sacramento), while 80 percent of the urban and agricultural water demands are in the southern two-thirds of the state.

 

Despite the geographic and hydrologic challenges, California has more irrigated acreage than any other state, thanks to massive water projects that include dams, reservoirs, aqueducts and canals to deliver water to users, especially in the central and southern portions of the state. Water also is moved east to west such as through San Francisco’s Hetch Hetchy system.

Yet, leaving water in rivers and streams is important for the health of the environment, wildlife, and fish. Some water is officially dedicated to the environment, such as Bay-Delta outflows. Other waterways are protected under the state and/or federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Acts, putting further water development off-limits. Overall, how much water is left in streams and rivers for the environment depends on a lot on yearly precipitation. Drought years, such as 2014, left many streams depleted and cities and farmers facing water supply cutbacks and, in some places, water rationing.

 

About 62 percent of California’s water goes to agriculture, 16 percent to urban use and 22 percent is dedicated to instream flows and to maintain drinking water quality, according to the California Water Blog and former University of California, Davis professor Jeff Mount, based on net water use, which accounts for water that is lost to evapotranspiration or salt sinks and not returned to rivers or groundwater.

California depends on two sources for its water: surface water and groundwater.The water that runs into rivers, lakes and reservoirs is called “surface water.” Groundwater is found beneath the earth’s surface in the pores and spaces between rocks and soil. These are called aquifers.

 

Most of California’s precipitation falls as snow in the northern part of the state during the winter. The snow acts as a natural reservoir, storing water until the spring runoff. After initial evaporation, percolation into the ground and transpiration, the water flows into streams and rivers and makes its way toward the ocean or into salt sinks.

 

The water collected in the state’s reservoirs is called the “developed supply,”and it is this amount that is available to deliver for urban and agricultural uses, to keep in reservoirs, put into groundwater storage or to dedicate to the environment. There is great competition for the limited amount of developed water supply, and human consumptive uses are the top priority for developed water supply in California under existing law.

California has 10 major drainage basins, also known as the state’s hydrologic regions. From north to south the basins are: North Coast, Sacramento River, North Lahontan, San Francisco Bay, San Joaquin River, Central Coast, Tulare Lake, South Lahontan, South Coast and Colorado River.

 

Amazingly, with the hundreds of rivers and streams plus more than 1,500 lakes and reservoirs in California, the state’s groundwater storage capacity is more than 10 times that of all its surface waterways.

 

Water pumped from wells in a typical year quenches 40 percent of California’s freshwater needs, according to the State Water Plan update, published by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) every four years. That number increases to 60 percent or more in dry years. In any year, groundwater use varies by region; some areas of California are much more dependent on groundwater than others.

 

Many rural areas depend entirely on groundwater, as do larger cities, such as Bakersfield and Fresno. Along the Central Coast, 90 percent of all drinking water is from groundwater. However, other cities, such as San Francisco and San Diego, have very little groundwater resources. In all, 85 percent of Californians depend on groundwater for at least part of their drinking water, according to the California State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board).

 

California uses more groundwater than any other state. And when reservoirs run low, farmers and cities pump even more water from underground. While there are programs throughout the state to recharge groundwater basins, in many parts of the state, no efforts are made to put water back into the ground. Overall, California pumps out up to 2 million more acre-feet a year than is recharged, according to state estimates.

 

Surface water and groundwater are connected in a system of watersheds and groundwater basins. The State Water Plan notes surface water and groundwater are a single resource, “In California, winter precipitation and spring snowmelt are captured in surface water reservoirs to provide both flood protection and water supply to the state. Reservoir storage also factors into drought assessment. The state’s largest surface ‘reservoir’ is the Sierra Nevada snowpack, about 15 million acre-feet on average,” the State Water Plan states.

I found this publication on Sars-Cov-2 universal antidote that was not messaged well at all to anyone in America, correct me if I'm wrong.

California’s groundwater has gone unregulated at the state level for decades. In fact the state was one of the last to enact any laws pertaining to how this resource can be pumped and used. However, a new era of groundwater management began Sept. 17, 2014 after Gov. Jerry Brown’s signing of historic legislation, the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), which empowers local officials to halt the trend of critically overdraft basins.

 

The law, which went into effect in 2015, sets a timeline to identify responsible local agencies – which will work as a team – the means to reverse overdrafted conditions in certain areas and to ensure the 127 “high and medium priority” groundwater basins or sub-basins not in overdraft reach sustainability by 2040.

 

Whether SGMA will realize its full transformative potential remains to be seen.

California’s Vast Infrastructure – The State Water Project and Central Valley Project

 

The California Aqueduct is 400 miles long. It starts in the Delta and conveys water to Southern California.

California’s major urban centers, Southern California and the Bay Area, lack sufficient groundwater and other local resources to support their large populations so water must be imported from other portions of the state. The San Francisco Bay Area imports more than 65 percent of its water through the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct, the East Bay’s Mokelumne Aqueduct. The region also obtains water from the SWP and the federal CVP.

 

Contra Costa County obtains its supplies directly from the Delta. In addition to Hetch Hetchy, the SWP’s South Bay Aqueduct supplies water to Alameda and Santa Clara counties. Groundwater is another major source of supply for the Santa Clara area, which also receives water from both projects.

 

Southern California imports more than half of its water supply through the Los Angeles Aqueduct, the Colorado River Aqueduct and the SWP.

 

One of the state’s earliest major water projects, the Los Angeles Aqueduct, supplies water and electricity to 3.8 million residents in the city of Los Angeles.

 

Serving as a wholesale entity for most of the southern California region, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California imports water from the Colorado River and the SWP and supplies it to member agencies and cities. Many Southern California cities also rely on groundwater, especially those along the coast.

 

California’s vast agricultural industry also depends on large water projects. The CVP supplies water primarily for irrigation within the Central Valley, and Kern County relies on the SWP for its water. The Imperial Irrigation District manages the system which delivers Colorado River water to the Imperial Valley.

 

Los Angeles Aqueduct: Owned and operated by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the Los Angeles Aqueduct supplies a portion of the water needed to supply the residents and businesses in its 465 square mile service area. The Los Angeles Aqueduct system brings water 338 miles from the Mono Basin and 233 miles from the Owens Valley by gravity to Los Angeles.

 

Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct: The Hetch Hetchy water system delivers about 265,000 acre-feet of pristine Sierra Nevada water per year to 2.4 million people in San Francisco, Santa Clara, Alameda and San Mateo counties. Eighty-five percent of the water comes from Sierra Nevada snowmelt stored in the Hetch Hetchy reservoir situated on the Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park. Hetch Hetchy water travels 160 miles via gravity from Yosemite to the San Francisco Bay Area.

 

Mokelumne Aqueduct: The East Bay Municipal Utility District draws water from the Mokelumne River and transports it 91 miles from the Sierra Nevada through three steel pipeline aqueducts to serve its customers in the East Bay Area. The Mokelumne Aqueduct provides 90 percent of the water served by East Bay Municipal Utilities District.

Ukraine Video Shows Night Owl Take Out Russian Drone

Avideo of an owl allegedly taking out a Russian drone in Ukraine has gone viral on social media. The incident reportedly occurred in Donetsk Oblast and involved an owl flying directly at the drone.

Newsweek cannot independently verify the incident in the video on X, formerly Twitter.

Newsweek reached out to the Russian and Ukrainian Ministries of Defense via email for comment.

 

Censor.Net and some of the posts of the video on social media have alleged that the owl is from "Ukrainian biolabs," referring to a conspiracy theory spread by Russia at the start of the war that the United States is running biolabs and developing biological weapons in Kyiv.

The biolabs claim, initially made by Major General Igor Konashenkov and spread by Moscow's media, was later backed up by the Russian Ministry of Defense, as it stated it had obtained evidence Ukraine and the U.S. had collaborated to develop biological weapons.

 

Ukraine denied the claims. Kyiv's Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said in a statement, "No foreign biological laboratories operate in Ukraine.

Statements recently made by individual politicians are not true and are a deliberate distortion of the facts." The conspiracy theory dates back to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

A post by the X account MilitaryNewsUA, run by a Ukrainian military blogger, alleges that the Russian drone struck by the owl was conducting a reconnaissance mission in eastern Ukraine.

Fighting in the Donetsk region has escalated recently as Russia has seized Kurakhove and is trying to seize cities westward, including Pokrovsk.

 

The owl is not the first animal to accidentally become part of the combat zone, as cats were sent to the frontlines at the beginning of the war to deal with mice and rats that were destroying uniforms, blankets and food. Many have since been adopted by Ukrainian soldiers fighting Moscow.

An X account called the Feline Defense Force was started in 2022 to document the friendships formed between soldiers and cats.

 

Ukraine is also using robotic dogs to support those on the frontlines, as they are capable of delivering ammunition and conducting surveillance.

The remote-controlled robot dogs were introduced in the summer of 2024. They were reportedly developed by the British risk-management company and drone manufacturer Brit Alliance, which has sent more than 30 of the devices to Ukraine.

The robot dogs have become a key asset to the Ukrainian forces as they can reportedly run up to 9 miles per hour, have a battery life of five hours, and carry the same heat signature as a rabbit, meaning they are nearly undetectable to Russian UAVs.

 

Iuliia Mendel, a former spokesperson for Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, on X: "NATO laboratories in Ukraine have designed owls that fight Russian drones. Check the video!"

Tim White, a journalist focusing on Ukraine, on X: "News from the frontline in #Donetsk region. A Russian drone got florked by a bird, possibly an owl. Those #Ukraine biolabs are really working well."

Anton Gerashchenko, the former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, on X: "A video appeared online showing a Ukrainian owl shooting down a Russian reconnaissance drone in Donetsk region. How soon will Nebenzya complain about Ukrainian biolabbed owls?"

 

It is unclear how Russia will react to the alleged owl incident as the third anniversary of its invasion of Ukraine nears.

Jen Rubin exits Washington Post, joins Norm Eisen to launch new outlet countering ‘authoritarian threat’

Veteran opinion columnist Jennifer Rubin is becoming the latest in a long list of Washington Post figures to leave the troubled institution.

 

Rubin is partnering with former White House ethics czar Norm Eisen and launching something new: a startup publication called The Contrarian.

 

The startup’s tagline, “Not owned by anybody,” is a pointed reference to billionaire Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos and other moguls who, in Rubin’s view, have “bent the knee” to President-elect Donald Trump.

 

“Our goal is to combat, with every fiber of our being, the authoritarian threat that we face,” Rubin told CNN in an interview ahead of the publication’s introduction.

 

Rather than anti-Trump, the founders describe their venture as pro-democracy. They said they have already enlisted about two dozen contributors, including people who played prominent roles in debunking 2020 election denialism and investigating the January 6, 2021, attack at the US Capitol.

 

“The voices we’ll be featuring are diverse across parties and generations,” Eisen said in a statement, “connected by the shared belief that we need an unshackled media in order to meet this moment, as we face an existential threat to American democracy.”

 

The Contrarian joins a growing group of publications – like The Bulwark and Zeteo, to name two – that are built on the Substack newsletter platform. Starting Monday, it will publish some content for free but will charge $7 a month for complete access to columns, podcasts, and videos.

 

Eisen, a regular presence on cable news who is departing his CNN legal analyst role, will be the publisher. Rubin will be the editor-in-chief.

 

A 14-year veteran of the Post’s opinion section, Rubin said she resigned because “the Post, along with most mainstream news outlets, has failed spectacularly at a moment that we most need a robust, aggressive free press.”

 

“I fear that things are going from bad to worse at The Post,” she added.

 

Rubin cited numerous controversies, including Bezos blocking the editorial board’s planned endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in October and Amazon, which Bezos founded, making a $1 million donation to Trump’s inaugural fund. She said a major factor in her exit was the Post’s recent refusal to publish a satirical cartoon by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Ann Telnaes showing Bezos and others on bended knee. Telnaes resigned as a result.

 

The Post’s opinion editor David Shipley defended his decision to nix the cartoon in an internal memo last Friday, calling it a “sound editorial decision” because other Post columns had referenced Bezos and Trump and “yet another piece in the span of a few days struck me as overkill.”

 

Both the opinion and newsroom departments at the Post have, indeed, covered Bezos rigorously. But Rubin’s concerns about the Post, including about its independence, have been shared by others, and boldface names from both departments have departed in the past couple of months, sapping morale inside the organization.

 

Rubin said the name of her outfit, The Contrarian, signaled “we’re not going with the herd,” meaning with the billionaire types that have sought to “curry favor” with the president-elect.

 

She said subscribers could expect “reported opinion and commentary” about political news, but also cultural coverage that might appeal to people who don’t follow politics closely.

She added that we’re already seeing “the freneticism of the Trump news cycle taking over” during the transition.

 

“We’re seeing the unpredictable cadence of the way news breaks as opposed to a more competent rational administration,” she said. “So we’ll see; we’re trying to be ready for anything, and that’s part of why we’re making this change for the first 100 days.”

In Spain, the Civil Guard recently dismantled a criminal organization in Córdoba that used drones to smuggle drugs and prohibited items into prisons.

The operation led to six arrests, including inmates from several penitentiaries. The drones, adapted for nighttime flights, enabled precise deliveries directly to prisoners’ cells.

Upwards of 100,000 Romanians of various political stripes took to the streets on Sunday to express outrage over the voiding of a presidential election that seemed poised to put a NATO and Ukraine War skeptic in power. George Simion, leader of the right-wing Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, summed up the intent of the demonstrations his party organized:

 

In November, Romania held the first balloting in its two-round election. It resulted in Europe's latest instance in which a populist, nationalist, right-wing candidate posted a result that far exceeded what polls indicated he was capable of. In a 13-contender field, that candidate, Calin Georgescu, led the pack with 23%, setting him up to advance to the second and final round against reformist Elena Lasconi of the Save Romania Union party.

 

However, just two days before that second round was to take place on Dec. 8, Romania's constitutional court annulled the election, and ordered a complete do-over of both rounds. Their justification: Supposed Russian meddling manifested in manipulated votes, campaign irregularities and secret spending. The ruling came after incumbent President Klaus Iohannis reportedly shared intelligence claiming Russia organized thousands of social media accounts to boost Georgescu's campaign.

On Gavin Newsom’s first full day in office, Jan. 8, 2019, the newly elected governor stood before the cameras, clad in jeans and sneakers and surrounded by emergency responders, and declared war on wildfires.

 

“Everybody has had enough,” the governor said, announcing he’d signed a sweeping executive order overhauling the state’s approach to wildfire prevention. Climate change was sparking fires more frequent, ferocious, and far-reaching than ever before, Newsom said, and confronting them would have to become a year-round effort.

 

The state’s response, Newsom added, “fundamentally has to change.”

 

But two-and-a-half years later, as California approaches what could be the worst wildfire season on record, it does so with little evidence of the year-round attention Newsom promised.

 

An investigation from CapRadio and NPR’s California Newsroom found the governor has misrepresented his accomplishments and even disinvested in wildfire prevention. The investigation found Newsom overstated, by an astounding 690%, the number of acres treated with fuel breaks and prescribed burns in the very forestry projects he said needed to be prioritized to protect the state’s most vulnerable communities. Newsom has claimed that 35 “priority projects” carried out as a result of his executive order resulted in fire prevention work on 90,000 acres. But the state’s own data show the actual number is 11,399.

 

Overall, California’s response has faltered under Newsom. After an initial jump during his first year in office, data obtained by CapRadio and NPR’s California Newsroom show Cal Fire’s fuel reduction output dropped by half in 2020, to levels below Gov. Jerry Brown’s final year in office. At the same time, Newsom slashed roughly $150 million from Cal Fire’s wildfire prevention budget.

 

Newsom has claimed that 35 "priority projects" carried out as a result of his executive order resulted in fire prevention work on 90,000 acres. But the state’s own data show the actual number is 11,399.

 

In 2020, 4.3 million acres burned, the most in California’s recorded history. That was more than double the previous record, set in 2018, when the Camp Fire destroyed the town of Paradise, killing 85 people.

 

This year, data obtained by CapRadio and NPR’s California Newsroom show that through Memorial Day, the annual number of acres worked remained low, despite a fire season that threatens to be even more dangerous than last year. Most of the state is in “extreme drought” or “exceptional drought,” which means there is an abundance of dry vegetation ready to catch fire. A record heatwave has swept the state already this year.

 

The data show Cal Fire treated 64,000 acres in 2019, but only 32,000 acres in 2020 and 24,000 acres through Memorial Day this year. The federal government and private landowners also chip in, but the totals remain far below what experts say is required to effectively adapt to the dangers of climate change.

 

“We need to be doing a million acres a year, for a long time,” said Michael Wara, director of the Climate and Energy Policy Program at Stanford University’s Woods Institute for the Environment. “That's the scale where you start to achieve … strategic goals, like fewer structures lost.”

 

Now, Newsom is trying to play catch-up. With the state enjoying an unexpected surplus, Newsom proposed $1.2 billion in “wildfire resiliency” funding in the upcoming budget. Experts say the increase in prevention spending could help the state get closer to a less-dangerous wildfire season over time. But they also expressed concern over whether the state will sustain that commitment for years to come. “We are in a deep hole,” Wara said, “and it is going to take us many years of sustained effort to get out.”

 

In interviews, fire survivors said they felt betrayed by government officials, who seem more concerned with making a splash than saving homes and businesses from incineration.

“With all the fire danger that we have experienced year, after year, after year … you would think it would be a higher priority to make sure that all of this area is treated as much as possible,” Mackenzie said. Politicians, he added, “always want to look good about fixing the problem, but then they never really do it.”

 

In Newsom’s case, the data shows he’s done just 13% of the job he’s touted on his highest priority projects.

 

The governor’s office did not respond to multiple requests for comment over the course of two weeks, including a 500 word email that laid out the investigation’s findings.

 

The head of Cal Fire, Chief Thom Porter, did grant an interview. He acknowledged the figures cited by Newsom were incorrect and took responsibility for the governor’s misstatements. Porter, who stood behind Newsom at a series of press conferences where the governor boasted of his accomplishments, said Cal Fire had neither “done our job in educating the public, nor the governor’s office” about how to talk about its wildfire prevention efforts.

 

Porter also confirmed the agency had fallen short of its fuel reduction goals in 2020. “It’s not something that I’m comfortable with,” he said. “It is something that I’m working to reconcile and to correct for the future.”

The 90,000 Acres That Weren’t

 

Many of Newsom’s misrepresentations revolve around 35 “priority projects,” which Cal Fire launched in February 2019 as a result of Newsom’s executive order.

 

The projects selected, Cal Fire said, would protect 200 communities that were especially vulnerable to wildfire. The projects ran the length of the state — from a fuel break in the shrublands around the community of Crest, east of El Cajon in San Diego County, to cutting back foliage along major routes in and out of the town of Lake Shastina, in Siskiyou County, near the Oregon border.

 

As required by Newsom’s executive order, the agency said it paid particular attention to equity — focusing on areas with high “poverty levels, residents with disabilities, language barriers, residents over 65 or under five years of age, and households without a car.”

 

Officially, the projects totaled about 90,000 acres. That’s well short of the amount of forestland experts say needs treatment in California, but it would have substantially increased Cal Fire’s prevention output compared to past years.

 

In early 2020, Newsom declared mission accomplished.

 

“The projects collectively have treated 90,000 acres,” states a January 2020 press release from the governor’s office. “Work included removal of hazardous dead trees, vegetation clearing, creation of fuel breaks and community defensible spaces, and creation of ingress and egress corridors.”

 

But the data analyzed by CapRadio and NPR’s California Newsroom show that Cal Fire treated a small fraction of that amount, 11,399 acres, or about 13% of the amount cited by Newsom.

 

In Mendocino County, for example, CalFire’s public reports said its Ukiah Fuels Reduction project, which included fuel breaks and forest thinning in the hills west of Highway 101, covered a sprawling 26,541 acres. But the agency’s data obtained by CapRadio and NPR’s California Newsroom showed the agency did work on just 734 of them.

Google's next big bet: Taking drone deliveries mainstream

The next time you order something, you may want to look up. The futuristic idea of delivering food to your doorstep from a drone zooming through the sky is becoming a reality.

Wing, a drone delivery venture owned by Google parent Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), has been building its operations since 2012.

Its drones have made more than 400,000 deliveries in the US, Europe, and Australia. The company is currently testing its services in Texas, Virginia, and at a facility in California.

 

"One of the biggest misconceptions about drone delivery and next-gen aviation is that it's some far-off future technology," Wing CEO Adam Woodworth told Yahoo Finance in an exclusive interview.

"The reality is that this is happening every day. Our recent partnership with DoorDash and Brookfield Property is a testament to that."

 

The drones cruise at a height of about 150 feet and travel roughly 65 miles per hour. They have a wingspan of 4.9 feet and length of 4.3 feet.

The fleet rests at charging stations called "nests," and one flies to a store when an order comes in.

The drone, while hovering, lowers a tether so an employee can attach the product inside a box. Then the cord is reeled up and off the drone goes.

 

The orders can be tracked by customers in real time, and the drone lowers its tether and unclips the item once it arrives. Wing's business partners pay the company a fee per delivery.

Wing partnered with Walmart (WMT) in August 2023 and DoorDash (DASH) in December 2024 to deliver to customers within proximity of its nests.

The company said the average flight time from stores to homes has been about 3 minutes and 24 seconds.

 

"We see drone delivery at scale looking more like an efficient rideshare network than a traditional transportation system," Woodworth said.

"We believe the drone is just the vehicle, and it’s only as useful as the software and logistics networks that make it meaningful for organizations and their customers."

 

There are restrictions, however. Deliveries can only take place during the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., to avoid the dark. The drones can only travel up to 12 miles round-trip, and the items they carry cannot exceed 2.5 pounds.

Customers are mostly ordering what Woodworth calls "forgotten goods." "Those 'oopsie' moments when you get home from the store and realize limes never made it into your shopping cart," Woodworth said. "Within minutes, you can have that delivered right to your door."

According to Woodworth, Wing delivered 554 limes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in 2024, "enough to make 700 margaritas."

 

"We have a lot of customer stickiness," Woodworth said, pointing to company data that customers order "at least twice a week" once they experience drone deliveries.

JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth wrote in a December research note, “While Wing doesn’t get as much attention from investors among Other Bets businesses — w/Waymo most frequently discussed — we believe Wing could become the 3rd OB business to raise outside capital, should it continue reaching progress milestones.”

Anmuth maintained an Overweight rating on Alphabet, raising the firm’s price target to $232 from $212 —an increase of nearly 20%.

“Google's accelerated pace of innovation is very evident into the new year with many significant recent product announcements and updates … and it is a key factor in our positive view on Google shares in 2025,” he wrote.

 

Moor Insights and Strategy analyst Anshel Sag is also bullish on Google but says it's still early days for Wing.

"This shows that the company is more diverse than a lot of its competitors, and it continues to create new and interesting ways to grow its business," Sag told Yahoo Finance.

"Wing has to be extremely cost-sensitive, even more so than Waymo," he added. "The cost sensitivity is way higher when it's a B2B transaction because the consumer most likely won't even know who's delivering it."

 

Google's not alone in the unmanned aerial vehicle space. Amazon's (AMZN) drone delivery service — called Prime Air — launched its new MK30 drones in 2022 and recently received regulatory approval to fly them.

Walmart also has a large drone delivery footprint. UPS (UPS) has been operating a fleet of drones for package deliveries. There are also several startups in the space, such as Zipline, Flytrex, and Matternet.

 

According to Woodworth, Wing aims to make drone delivery an established part of the delivery ecosystem available to customers nationwide by 2035.

A report by market research firm Mordor Intelligence estimated the drone delivery market size will reach $830 million this year and rise to $2.09 billion by 2030.

 

Woodworth joined Wing in 2014 as a hardware engineer and served as the company's chief technology officer before becoming CEO in 2022. "Project Wing" began as an idea under Alphabet’s research lab that focuses on moonshot projects (known as X).

Alphabet's "other bets" businesses that have raised capital include Waymo, Verily, Intrinsic, and Isomorphic Labs.

While Woodworth declined to comment on Wing's financials, analysts told Yahoo Finance it's clear Wing is part of a broader transportation vision at Google.

 

The business took investments from ZEBOX Ventures and X Development at the incubator stage but has yet to raise another round, according to Pitchbook.

A future capital raise would be "a sign that they feel like they are ready for an expansion," Sag said. "They've been around for a while — it feels like the next step."

“The 90k acre figure was the overall project area, but not necessarily the area treated,” Cal Fire public information officer Daniel Berlant wrote when pressed, acknowledging the priority projects did not produce mitigation work across 90,000 acres.

 

But that doesn’t square with Newsom’s portrayal to the public, nor does it match how Cal Fire described the projects. A fact sheet from 2019 claimed “the priority fuel reduction projects would treat approximately 90,000 acres.”

 

Forestry experts said the discrepancies in vegetation management data undermines the state’s ability to measure progress toward its ambitious fuel reduction targets.

 

“We have to be truthful,” said Scott Stephens, a professor of fire science at UC Berkeley. When treatment numbers are garbled or exaggerated, he added, “Then you wonder about public confidence [and if] funding is being used efficiently.”

 

The state and federal government recently set an annual goal of treating 500,000 acres each by 2025, with Cal Fire developing a list of 500 projects to continuously work on and update to reach that end.

 

“We need to be really clear on what we're reporting,” said John Battles, a professor of forest ecology at UC Berkeley. “Especially if there's a million acre goal, with half coming from the state.”

 

The Cal Fire fact sheet from 2019 claimed Newsom’s priority projects would knock out “about 20% of the [500,000 acre] goal.”

 

In reality, the actual acres treated represented less than 3%.

 

Despite Newsom’s public pronouncements, Porter, the chief of Cal Fire, said the state was never going to be able to tackle all 90,000 acres in 2019.

 

“We didn't have all of the environmental clearance that we were going to need to do all of that work,” Porter said. “Nor did we have all of the agreements with landowners completely in place.”

Total Acres Treated Plummets

Newsom regularly points to the 35 priority projects as a badge of success. In a press release last month, he claimed the “emergency fuel reduction projects … played a critical role in containing wildfires last year.”

 

Over 4 million acres burned across the state in 2020 — the most since California began keeping track. Cal Fire did not provide an estimate for how much more land would have burned without the completion of the priority projects, and a review of fire data by the San Francisco Chronicle found the fire breaks were often too small to be effective. “When they did intercept a fire, the flames often pushed right through,” the paper reported.

 

Still, the department says the fuel breaks and thinning did save some communities from fires.

 

A fuel break near Shaver Lake in Fresno County, for example, is credited with helping save about 70 homes in a nearby subdivision. And a fuel break in Butte County called Forbestown Ridge helped slow the advance of the North Complex Fire, allowing firefighters to develop a suppression plan and create contingency lines.

 

But as Newsom boasted about the 35 projects, fire prevention funding and productivity dwindled.

 

Newsom did not identify a new set of priority projects to tackle after declaring victory on the initial 35 in January 2020, even though Cal Fire’s recommendations underscored the urgent need to make this an ongoing effort.

“California faces a massive backlog of forest management work,” the department states in a 2019 report. “Millions of acres are in need of treatment, and this work — once completed — must be repeated over the years.”

 

A decade ago, Cal Fire was treating a paltry 17,000 acres annually. That number has steadily climbed. Though Newsom misrepresented the number of acres treated in his “priority projects,” the overall amount of wildfire mitigation work carried out by Cal Fire spiked in his first year in office, to 64,000 acres. But in 2020, fuel reduction totals plummeted to less than 32,000 acres — a roughly 50% drop.

 

Porter acknowledges the decline, but claims there’s not much Cal Fire could do. Though Newsom claimed in July 2020 that California was “up to the task” of preventing wildfires and stopping the coronavirus at the same time, Porter said the reality of the pandemic presented barriers Cal Fire could not overcome.

 

The record fire season also made prevention work more difficult. Fires broke out earlier than usual, leaving less time for prescribed burns and thinning. Crews responsible for fire prevention work are also tasked with fire suppression. After a spate of dry lightning that set multiple conflagration fires at once, crews shifted to an all-hands-on-deck suppression effort. Our “initial analysis is that what kept us from getting the work done was completely out of our control,” Porter said

 

But the significant drop in acres treated also shows the fragility of California’s existing wildfire prevention infrastructure — and the need to considerably strengthen it.

 

“We've got to get more strategic,” said Stephens. “We're going to have to get much more nimble.”

 

Through late May of 2021, Cal Fire treated over 23,000 acres, putting it on track to exceed last year’s total, but fall short of the work done in 2019.

Big Spending Push, After Disinvestment

 

The drop in wildfire prevention work occurred at a time when the state put fewer dollars toward fire prevention.

 

The 2019 budget allocated $355 million for wildfire prevention and resource management. The following year, after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Newsom slashed that to $203 million — a decrease of more than 40%.

 

Within months of enacting the budget last year, fire had consumed California. Over 4 million acres burned largely due to the long-term impacts of climate change and fuel buildup, combined with extraordinary weather events. But the cataclysmic fire season underscored the crucial need for increased and sustained spending on prevention — not disinvestment.

 

“Spending on prevention is the only way that this gets better, but we have to do it for a super long time,” said Wara of Stanford University’s Woods Institute. “We can't fire-fight our way out of this problem.”

 

The significance of this problem for California justifies spending a lot more than we're spending right now.

By late 2020, it became clear the pandemic would not have a disastrous impact on state revenues. On the contrary, Newsom said the state had a nearly $76 billion surplus.

 

Now, Newsom is proposing $2 billion in spending on wildfires and emergency preparedness, with $1.2 billion going toward ‘wildfire resiliency.’ The state Legislature’s version of the budget allocates over $1.5 billion for a “wildfire prevention and forest resilience package.”

 

Experts anticipate there will be significantly more money for mitigation compared to past budgets — but it’ll still fall short.

 

“I see [it] as a very positive trend,” said Wara. “I still think that we are not spending enough. The significance of this problem for California justifies spending a lot more than we're spending right now.”

 

Newsom’s $2 billion proposal included an early budget allocation for $536 million, signed in April, with the majority going toward forest health and fuel reduction programs.

 

Berlant, the Cal Fire spokesman, says he believes the funding will help the department reach its treatment goals years ahead of schedule. But he acknowledges the agency can only keep that up with sustained funding — otherwise, fuel reduction could drop again.

 

“How we work to make that ongoing will be a continued discussion with the Legislature,” he said.

 

Stephens of UC Berkeley says retreating on wildfire prevention spending could undo progress made toward the state’s ambitious goals.

 

“If you're not going to maintain the funding for [treatment] work, why even do it in the first place?” he said. “If you don't continue this forever, you're basically never going to get out of this hole.”

Tens of millions have been spent to prove what Mark Zuckerberg could have admitted years ago — that the government pressured Facebook to censor legitimate content, and the social media giant complied.

 

History will remember this era as the moment when America’s most sacred principles collided with unprecedented institutional power – and lost. The systematic dismantling of fundamental rights didn’t happen through military force or executive decree, but through the quiet cooperation of tech platforms, media gatekeepers, and government agencies, all claiming to protect us from “misinformation.”

 

Meta’s sudden dismantling of its fact-checking program – announced by Zuckerberg as a “cultural tipping point towards prioritizing speech” – reads like a quiet footnote to what history may record as one of the most staggering violations of fundamental rights in recent memory. After eight years of increasingly aggressive content moderation, including nearly 100 fact-checking organizations operating in over 60 languages, Meta is now pivoting to a community-driven system similar to X’s model.

 

In his announcement, Zuckerberg first suggests that the censorship was purely a technical mistake, and then changes his tune near the end and admits what has long been litigated: “The only way that we can push back on this global trend is with the support of the US government. And that’s why it’s been so difficult over the past 4 years when even the US government has pushed for censorship. By going after us and other American companies, it has emboldened other governments to go even further.”

 

In many court cases costing millions, involving vast FOIA requests, depositions, and discoveries, the truth of this has been documented in 100,000 pages of evidence. The Murthy v. Missouri case alone uncovered substantial communications through FOIA and depositions, revealing the depth of government coordination with social media platforms. The Supreme Court considered it all but several justices simply could not comprehend the substance and scale, and thus reversed a lower court injunction to stop it all. Now we have Zuckerberg openly admitting precisely what was in dispute: the US government’s involvement in aggressive violation of the First Amendment.

 

This should, at least, make it easier to find redress as the cases proceed. Still, it is frustrating. Tens of millions have been spent to prove what he could have admitted years ago. But back then, the censors were still in charge, and Facebook was guarding its relationship with the powers that be.

 

The timing of the shift is telling: a Trump ally joining the board, Meta’s president of global affairs being replaced by a prominent Republican, and a new administration preparing to take control. But while Zuckerberg frames this as a return to free speech principles, the damage of their experiment in mass censorship can’t be undone with a simple policy change.

 

The irony runs deep: private companies claiming independence while acting as extensions of state power. Consider our own experience: posting Mussolini’s definition of fascism as “the merger of state and corporate power” – only to have Meta remove it as “misinformation.” This wasn’t just censorship; it was meta-censorship – silencing discussion about the very mechanisms of control being deployed.

 

While tech platforms maintained the facade of private enterprise, their synchronized actions with government agencies revealed a more troubling reality: the emergence of exactly the kind of state-corporate fusion they were trying to prevent us from discussing.

Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Kamala Harris, and President-elect Donald Trump are all in attendance. A completely lost Joe Biden, who declared a National Day of Mourning and closed the federal offices, delivered the eulogy.

 

During the funeral, a stunning sight quickly emerged. C-SPAN captured footage of Trump and Obama sitting next to each other, sharing a friendly chat for a few brief moments.

 

American viewers were intrigued by the conversation and wondered what the two talked about.

 

On Sunday, President Trump posted a lip reading of his conversation with Barack Obama at Jimmy Carter’s funeral. Trump posted this on Truth Social.

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby direct the following:

Section 1. Policy. For decades, many of our Federal western water infrastructure investments have been undermined by fragmented and outdated regulatory actions. In a memorandum dated October 19, 2018 (Promoting the Reliable Supply and Delivery of Water in the West), I directed the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Commerce to work together, to the extent practicable and consistent with applicable law, to complete the review of the long-term coordinated operations of the Central Valley Project (CVP) and the California State Water Project (SWP), and subsequently to issue an updated Plan of Operations (Plan) and Record of Decision (ROD). It is the policy of the United States to modernize our Federal western water infrastructure to deliver water and power in an efficient, cost-effective way.

Sec. 2. Enhancing Water Supplies While Appropriately Protecting Species and Habitats. In response to my memorandum, a Plan and ROD were issued today. The new framework set forth in these documents is expected to deliver more water to communities while using science and investments appropriately to protect affected species and their habitats. This is a good first step, but I believe more can be done. Therefore, I direct the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Commerce to build upon the success of the Plan and ROD by supplementing the resulting operations, consistent with applicable law, to make deliveries of water more reliable and bountiful. To help develop and deliver water supplies in the Central Valley of California, I direct those Secretaries to coordinate efforts to:

(a) implement the relevant authorities of subtitle J of the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act (Public Law 114-322), which include provisions focused on (1) developing water storage, (2) capturing more water during storm events, and (3) giving agricultural and municipal water users more regulatory certainty;

(b) fully implement, with respect to future agency actions, recent Administration improvements to management of programs established pursuant to the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (Public Law 93-205); and

(c) provide quarterly updates to the Chair of the Council on Environmental Quality and, at the request of other components of the Executive Office of the President, to each such component, regarding progress in carrying out sections 2(a) and (b) of this memorandum.

Sec. 3. General Provisions (a) Nothing in this memorandum shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect:

(i) the authority granted by law to an executive department or agency, or the head thereof; or

(ii) the functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.

(b) This memorandum shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.

(c) This memorandum is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

A thousand new drones were delivered to Iran’s army on Monday, the state-run Tasnim news agency reported, as the country braces for more friction with arch-enemy Israel and the United States under incoming US president Donald Trump.

The drones were delivered to various locations throughout Iran and are said to have high stealth and anti-fortification abilities, according to Tasnim.

 

“The drones’ unique features, including a range of over 2,000 km., high destructive power, the ability to pass through defense layers with a low radar cross-section, and autonomous flight, not only increase the depth of reconnaissance and border monitoring but also boost the combat capability of the army’s drone fleet in confronting distant targets,” the news agency added.

Lithuania is providing Ukraine with 4,500 drones worth 5 million euros ($5.1 million) in the coming days, Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene announced on Jan. 12.

Drones have proven crucial for both sides of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. Kyiv employs unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) of various types for reconnaissance and attack roles at the front lines and for long-range strikes in the Russian rear.

Sakaliene's statement came shortly after the Lithuanian broadcaster LRT reported that thousands of drones, which were to be delivered to Ukraine several months ago, are still in Lithuanian warehouses as their delivery is delayed by bureaucratic obstacles.

 

The previous Lithuanian government pledged in August that 5,000 Lithuanian-made drones would be delivered to Ukraine by fall.

Trump himself has repeatedly threatened there would be “hell to pay” if Hamas didn’t start releasing Israeli hostages by his inauguration. Vice President-elect JD Vance elaborated on what that might mean in an interview on Sunday.

 

“It means enabling the Israelis to knock out the final couple of battalions of Hamas and their leadership. It means very aggressive sanctions and financial penalties on those who are supporting terrorist organizations in the Middle East. It means actually doing the job of American leadership,” Vance said.

 

The talking point of the Republicans is that President Biden hasn’t done enough to support Israel even though he’s provided Israel with an unprecedented amount of military aid.

 

In Israel, Netanyahu, who sabotaged previous rounds of negotiations, has been coming under increasing pressure to reach a deal. Over 800 parents of Israeli soldiers recently sent a letter to Netanyahu, accusing him of sacrificing their children for political survival.

 

“We accuse you of sacrificing the lives of both the hostages and the soldiers. We call on you to stop the war immediately, bring home the hostages, and spare the lives of our soldiers. Let us rebuild the ruins you and your government are responsible for,” the letter reads.

Italy releases Iranian citizen held on a US warrant over drone attack in Jordan

Italy on Sunday released an Iranian citizen wanted by the U.S. over a drone attack in Jordan that killed three Americans a year ago, after the Italian justice minister asked a court to revoke his arrest.

Mohammad Abedini has already returned to Iran, Iranian state TV said on Sunday afternoon.

 

He was scheduled to appear at a Milan court on Wednesday in connection with his bid for house arrest pending extradition to the U.S.

Abedini was arrested on a U.S. warrant on Dec. 16, three days before Italian journalist Cecilia Sala was detained while on a reporting trip to Iran.

Sala, who was believed held as a bargaining chip for Abedini’s release, returned home last week.

 

The U.S. Justice Department has accused Abedini of supplying the drone technology to Iran that was used in a January 2024 attack on a U.S. outpost in Jordan that killed three American troops.

An official note on the case released by the Italian Justice Ministry on Sunday said that under Italy-U.S. extradition treaties, “only crimes that are punishable according to the laws of both sides can lead to extradition, a condition which, based on the state of documents, can’t be considered as existing.”

 

The ministry said that the potential charge against Abedini — criminal association for violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a U.S. federal law — “did not correspond to any conduct recognized by Italian law as a crime.”

Iranian state TV said the release and return of Abedini came after Iran’s foreign ministry pursued the case, as well as “talks” between Iran’s intelligence ministry and the Italian intelligence service.

 

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni described a “diplomatic triangulation” with Iran and the United States as being key to securing Sala’s release, confirming for the first time that Washington’s interests entered into the negotiations.

Sala’s release came after Meloni made a surprise trip to Florida to meet U.S. President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

Ukraine’s military weakened in 2024 – Global Firepower

The outlet has downgraded Kiev from 18th to 20th place in its latest rating of the world’s most powerful armies, with Moscow ranking second

 

Ukraine’s military has slid for a second consecutive year in the rating of the world’s top armies compiled by Global Firepower.By contrast, Russia has retained second place for over a decade.

 

In its 2025 Military Strength Ranking, the analytical outlet ranked the US military first, with a ‘PowerIndex’ score of 0.0744 (where 0.0000 is considered perfect), followed by Russia with 0.0788, and China in third place with the same score.Ukraine ranks 20th, with a score of 0.3755. The latter indicator inversely correlates with a nation’s military might.

 

Last year’s assessment placed Kiev in 18th place, with the top three armies remaining unchanged. In 2023, Ukraine ranked 15th.

 

The website, which has been publishing annual ratings of 145 armed forces since 2006, claims to base its analyses on “each nation’s potential war-making capability across land, sea, and airfought by conventional means,” – meaning that a country’s nuclear arsenal, if it has one, does not factor in. “The results incorporate values related to manpower, equipment, natural resources, finances, and geography represented by 60+ individual factors,” Global Firepower writes on its website.

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel is facing intense backlash, including from her own political party, over a new memoir she wrote that is a nightmare for German political parties looking to stop the ascending right-wing AfD party.

 

She wrote the book hoping to “secure her crumbling legacy,” The Wall Street Journal reported, noting that “the effort is backfiring.”

 

The more than 700-page book was “riling up even some of her most ardent supporters” because she does not believe that any of her failed policies were bad for the country — including allowing millions of Muslim refugees from the Middle East to be resettled in Germany.

 

Powerful German state broadcaster ARD titled the headline of their report on her book: “Much pride, little self-reflection.”

 

Merkel’s Christian Democratic Party blame her directly for the problems that the country is facing and they say that her memoir is making things even worse.

 

“The publication of this unrepentant, self-righteous book at a time of economic and political turmoil like this is hurting [her political party],” said former senior Merkel official Nico Lange.

 

The report said that her approval rating has plummeted from her time as a popular elected official to someone that the German public has turned against. Her allies overseas have abandoned support for her, the report said.

 

The most shocking part of the report focused specifically on her retelling of why she allowed millions of Muslim refugees into Germany.

 

Merkel said that it was “fully irrelevant whether they had a right to stay in Germany or not” when she let them enter the country.

 

She then blamed the German people for the problems that the refugees have caused:

 

The consequences—failed integration, ballooning welfare spending, rising crime, political polarization—can be partly blamed, she writes, on Germans’ lack of “will to change.”

 

In the decade since she instituted her open-door policy, immigration has changed the face of Germany and its political dynamics. An average of around 400,000 immigrants—the population of a large German city—have entered each year, and Germany now spends as much on refugees as it does on defense.

 

The report noted that the phrase that Merkel repeatedly used to justify her failed policies — that she had “no alternative” but to do what she did — served as the inspiration for the Alternative for Germany, or AfD.

The conflict between Moscow and Kiev has taken a heavy toll on the Ukrainian sports community, with hundreds of athletes ending up forced into the military and killed on the front lines, rower Larisa Zhalinskaya has told RT.

 

The athlete says she was forced to join the Ukrainian National Guard during the conflict. However, Zhalinskaya managed to flee Ukraine, leaving the country for Poland and ultimately travelling to Russia through Belarus.

 

“The goal was simply to save enough money to escape from Ukraine, and it was not an easy one, given that corruption was widespread in the [National Guard] unit I served with.I had to hand over roughly half of my allowance to the officers.

 

Today, many consider my actions escape, but I would call it a return to my homeland,” Zhalinskaya said. The athlete hails from Zaporozhye Region, which voted to join Russia in a late 2022 referendum.

 

Ukraine has gradually been militarizing its sports communityover the past decade, and funding for civilian athletics is constantly shrinking, Zhalinskaya said.

 

As an alternative, the athletes have been offered service with the Ukrainian military and the National Guard;they are told they won’t be involved in the fightingand can continue to do sports.

 

The military had insisted it did not require the athletes to demonstrate outstanding sports performance, with any results said to be acceptable, Zhalinskaya said. The situation, however, changed with the escalation of the conflict in February 2022.

 

“Many were sent to the front line, many of them have already died. Last fall, the Ukrainian side officially stated thatmore than 600 Ukrainian professional athletes and coaches have died,” she said.

 

Given that writing off unrecovered casualties as deserters or missing in action has become a common practice in the Ukrainian military, the figure is likely significantly higher than the official tally of 600, Zhalinskaya suggested.

 

“For comparison, 140 athletes represented Ukraine at the Olympic Games. Four Olympic teams have been herded to the frontline and killed,” she said, urging her colleagues to flee the country immediately if such an opportunity arises.

From earthquakes to wildfires- the year has been witnessing some of the most heartbreaking incidents under the span of hardly two weeks.

The latest to suffer losses from such disasters is California, where multiple wildfires have turned parts of the state into ‘grey’ ruins.

 

An ‘orange sky’ filled with smoke and a ‘yellow ground’ full of flames is all that the state has become since last week’s fires.

As per reports, at least 24 people have lost their lives while the number of displaced people has reached in thousands. Amid the saddening reports on the entire tragedy, a specifically eerie video came forward, which immediately went viral on social media. The said video showed a mysterious object flying around the Los Angeles fires, near a beach, giving rise to speculations of ‘UFO sightings’.

 

The said object was hovering rather quickly, almost eliminating the possibility of being an aircraft or a drone- as per most netizens.

The clip showed the object somewhat emerging from the ocean, after which it continued to fly around- seemingly aimlessly. Times Now could not confirm the authenticity of the clip.

The video was shared on Reddit, by the handle ‘frankievalentino’. The post was shared five days ago and pulled more than 1K upvotes from people.

‘Let’s buy good, cheap gas from our friends in Russia’ – UK politician

David Kurten has called for reactivating the only undamaged Nord Stream gas pipeline amid low reserves and low temperatures

 

British Eurosceptic politician David Kurten has called for a partial relaunch of the Nord Stream pipeline system – which previously pumped Russian natural gas to the EU – amid freezing weather and supply fears.

 

In a statement on X on Sunday, the politician, who leads the Heritage Party, advocated purchasing gas from Russia to address a potential energy shortage.

 

“One of the four Nord Stream pipelines is undamaged and could be turned on again very quickly. Let's buy good, cheap gas from our friends in Russia once again,” Kurten wrote.

 

British gas supplier Centrica warned last week that “plunging temperatures… ==have reduced UK winter gas storage to concerningly low levels.”

 

“Stubbornly high” gas prices have made it “more difficult to top up storage,” the company added. The network operator National Gas has since downplayed the concerns, stating that the storage level “remains healthy.”

 

The Nord Stream 1 & 2 pipeline system, operated by Russia’s Gazprom, was designed to pump gas under the Baltic Sea directly to Germany. The first line was launched in 2011 and became a key energy source for the EU.

 

Nord Stream 2, completed in 2021, was intended to double the system’s capacity, but never went online due to certification issues in Germany – which were exacerbated by the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict the following year.

 

Both Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 were ruptured in September 2022 in what EU officials described as an act of sabotage. Explosions rendered three of the four conduits inoperable.

 

Russia has repeatedly called for an impartial international investigation, while criticizing the transparency of European-led probes. Moscow has suggested that the United States may have been behind the explosions, in an attempt to reduce Russia’s energy leverage.

 

The Nord Stream shut-down has sent energy prices soaring in Germany, which previously bought over 50% of its natural gas from Russia, and forced it to buy more expensive LNG from other suppliers, including the US.

 

In 2023, the EU’s largest economy entered a recession, according to official statistics. Other countries, including Austria,

Italy, Hungary, and Slovakia, have also experienced disruptions, which have beenfurther exacerbated by the suspension of Russian gas transit via Ukraine, after Kiev refusedto extend a transit deal beyond 2024.

 

German opposition politician and candidate for chancellor Alice Weidel pledged last week to put Nord Stream back into operation if her party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), wins next month’s general election.

 

The UK, unlike many European nations, historically imported only a small percentage of its gas from Russia. Before 2022, Russian imports accounted for less than 4% of the UK’s total supply, trailing behind domestic production in the North Sea, and imports from Norway, Qatar, and the United States.

 

The Heritage Party was founded by Kurten in 2020. It claims to defend traditional family values and national sovereignty, while seeking to scale back UK ties with the European Union. In the UK's general election last July, it contested several constituencies but did not secure any seats in parliament.
