According to initial reports, Los Angeles Police believe that the Kenneth Fire currently burning was intentionally set and that the unnamed suspect of the arson was detained by citizens and restrained with zip ties before being handed over to police.

LAPD officials said that the detained suspect is a homeless man in his 30s and that the conflagration is “being investigated as a crime.”

Scoop: Denmark sent Trump team private messages on Greenland

Denmark sent private messages in recent daysto President-elect Trump's team expressing willingness to discuss boosting security in Greenland or increasing the U.S. military presenceon the island, two sources with knowledge of the issue tell Axios.

Why it matters: Trump's refusal to rule out military force to take control of Greenland was effectively a threat to invade a longstanding NATO ally. Those comments caught Copenhagen and many other European capitals off guard.

The big picture: Greenland (pop. 56,000) is largely autonomous, but Denmark maintains responsibility for defense.

• Trump has repeatedly declared that controlling Greenland — the world's largest island — is necessary for U.S. national security vis-a-vis Russia and China. His son Don Jr. visited Greenland this week bearing MAGA hats.

• Climate change is opening up the Arctic for competition between superpowers, and could also make it easier to tap Greenland's mineral riches.

Between the lines: The Danish government wants to convince Trump, including through the messages passed to his advisers this week, that his security concerns can be addressed without claiming Greenland for the U.S.

• One European diplomat told Axios that Denmark is widely seen as one of the closest allies of the U.S. within the EU, and no one could have imagined it would be the first country with which Trump would pick a fight. (KEK the EU and Denmark have been screwing the US for a long time. They are not negotiating with "Joe not Bidan")

Driving the news: Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and her Greenlandic counterpart Múte Egede met on Friday in Copenhagen to discuss the situation.

• In a press conference after the meeting Frederiksen said she asked for a meeting with Trump. Egede said he is also ready to talk to the president-elect.

• "Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be American. We want to be Greenlandic," Egede, an advocate for independence, said at the press conference. (Denmark put them up to this, they don't have to be part of America,but if they did, they'd get a boatload of money for all time to build out a metropolis to grow)

Behind the scenes: The sources said the Danish government wants to avoid a public clash with the new U.S. administration, and asked members of the Trump team for clarification regarding what exactly the president-elect meant in his comments earlier this week.

• In the messages passed to the Trump team, the Danish government made clear Greenland was not for sale but expressed readiness to discuss any other U.S. request regarding the island, the sources said.

•The U.S. already has a military baseon Greenland and an agreement with Denmarkdating to 1951 on defending the island, under which an increase of U.S. forces could easily be discussed.

• Danish officials have alreadysaid they are looking into further measures to increase investment in military infrastructure and capabilities in Greenland, in consultation with the Greenlandic government. (Denmark fucking ignored them for decades, but when Trump came in all of a sudden they don't want to continue starving Greenland. Yeah right!)

Zoom out: Greenland played a key role in NATO and U.S. defenses during the Cold War as part of an early warning system to detect Soviet submarines, or potentially missiles.

• With new sea lanes opening up as climate change reshapes the Arctic, Greenland's geography is becoming all the more important.

• But if Trump's real concern is security, there's no reason the U.S. couldn't simply increase its military presence and capabilities in Greenland under its alliance with Denmark, contends Malte Humpert, a founder and senior fellow at the Arctic Institute.

What to watch: Secretary of State Blinken downplayed Trump's comments and said there's no point wasting time on them. "It is not a good idea and it is not going to happen," Blinken said. (Fuck off Convict Blinken!)

• But Trump's continued comments about this issue, and his son's visit, mean Danish and Greenlandic officials can't rule out the possibility that Trump is quite serious.

The bottom line: The main question is whether Trump would be content to cut a deal with Denmark and declare victory, or whether his true mission is to become the first president in 80 years to gain new territory for the U.S.

From new perspectives on the early universe to illuminating the extreme environment near a black hole, discoveries from NASA missions will be highlighted at the 245th meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS).

Spacewalk Preps, Biology Research Wrap Up Week Aboard Station

January 10, 2025

The Expedition 72 crew wrapped up the week aboard the International Space Station preparing for a spacewalk to service science and station hardware next week.

The orbital residents also continued their biotechnology and human research activities to advance health on Earth and in space.

Two spacewalks are scheduled for Jan. 16 and Jan. 23 to maintain astrophysics research gear, replace advanced communications gear, and search for potential microbes living on the outside the space orbital outpost.

NASA astronauts Nick Hague and Suni Williams will go on the first spacewalk and spend about six-and-a-half hours patching a light leak on the NICER X-ray telescope, readying the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer for future upgrades, and replacing station orientation and navigation gear.

The pair was joined by NASA Flight Engineers Don Pettit and Butch Wilmore on Friday reviewing next week’s spacewalk procedures and conferring with engineers on the ground.

The second spacewalk will see two yet-to-be-announced astronauts exiting the station’s Quest airlock to replace an antenna assembly, search for external microbes, and checkout the Canadarm2 robotic arm.

Both spacewalks will begin around 7 a.m. with NASA+ coverage starting at 5:30 a.m.

Hague began his day processing samples of micro-algae that may be able to produce food to sustain crews and oxygen to support spacecraft life support systems.

Next, he downloaded his health data collected for analysis after he jogged on the COLBERT treadmill and worked out on the advanced resistive exercise device.

The other three NASA astronauts including Commander Williams and Flight Engineers Pettit and Wilmore spent the first half of their day on a variety of orbital maintenance.

Williams checked out components on a fluorescence biology microscope while Pettit and Hague serviced electronics, plumbing, and life support systems.

Working in the station’s Roscosmos segment, cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner took turns exploring how a crew member living in weightlessness uses vision to adapt their sense of balance and orientation.

Flight Engineer Aleksandr Gorbunov inspected piloting and navigation gear throughout his shift on Friday.

Another Arson Suspect Arrested as California Wildfires Spread

California State Parks announced Friday the arrest of Gloria Lynn Mandich, 60, in connection with a brush fire that ignited near Leo Carrillo State Park in Los Angeles County.

Mandich was booked into Ventura County Jail on a felony charge of arson under California Penal Code 451(d) and is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court. Authorities say the fire, which started on January 8, was quickly extinguished by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Mandich's arrest is the second since the fires began. Earlier this week, law enforcement detained a man near the Kenneth Fire in Woodland Hills on suspicion of arson. However, following further investigation, Los Angeles Police Department officials determined there was insufficient probable cause to charge him with arson.

N3 intern Lillian Hall and mentor Dr. Juan Carlos Martinez Oliveros presented Lilly’s summer research project on December 9 at the 2024 American Geophysical Union conference in Washington, D.C. Their poster, entitled “Eclipse Megamovie: Image Processing”, represents the first time an N3 intern has co-authored a presentation at the prestigious AGU conference.

The NASA Citizen Science project, Eclipse Megamovie, is leveraging the power of citizen science to construct a high-resolution time-lapse of the Sun's corona during the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse.

By coordinating the work of hundreds of participants along the path of totality, a substantial dataset of images was obtained.

The goal of the project is to unveil dynamic transformations in the Sun's atmosphere that are only visible during a total solar eclipse.

To process the vast quantity of imaging data collected, Lilly assisted Dr. Martinez Oliveros and other researchers in implementing a robust pipeline involving image calibration, registration, and co-location.

Image registration techniques aligned the solar features across different frames, compensating for Earth's rotation and camera movement.

Finally, they used imaging techniques to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio, revealing subtle coronal structures and possible dynamics.

This comprehensive data processing methodology has enabled the extraction of meaningful scientific information from the Eclipse Megamovie dataset.

Temperatures Rising: NASA Confirms 2024 Warmest Year on Record

Earth’s average surface temperature in 2024 was the warmest on record, according to an analysis led by NASA scientists.

Global temperatures in 2024 were 2.30 degrees Fahrenheit (1.28 degrees Celsius) above the agency’s 20th-century baseline (1951-1980), which tops the record set in 2023.

The new record comes after 15 consecutive months (June 2023 through August 2024) of monthly temperature records — an unprecedented heat streak.

“Once again, the temperature record has been shattered — 2024 was the hottest year since record keeping began in 1880,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

“Between record breaking temperatures and wildfires currently threatening our centers and workforce in California, it has never been more important to understand our changing planet.”

NASA scientists further estimate Earth in 2024 was about 2.65 degrees Fahrenheit (1.47 degrees Celsius) warmer than the mid-19th century average (1850-1900).

For more than half of 2024, average temperatures were more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above the baseline, and the annual average, with mathematical uncertainties, may have exceeded the level for the first time.

“The Paris Agreement on climate change sets forth efforts to remain below 1.5 degrees Celsius over the long term.

To put that in perspective, temperatures during the warm periods on Earth three million years ago — when sea levels were dozens of feet higher than today — were only around 3 degrees Celsius warmer than pre-industrial levels,” said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York.

“We are halfway to Pliocene-level warmth in just 150 years.”

Scientists have concluded the warming trend of recent decades is driven by heat-trapping carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases.

In 2022 and 2023, Earth saw record increases in carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels, according to a recent international analysis.

The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased from pre-industrial levels in the 18th century of approximately 278 parts per million to about 420 parts per million today.

NASA and other federal agencies regularly collect data on greenhouse gas concentrations and emissions.

These data are available at the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center, a multi-agency effort that consolidates information from observations and models, with a goal of providing decision-makers with one location for data and analysis.

Exceptional heat trends

The temperatures of individual years can be influenced by natural climate fluctuations such as El Niño and La Niña, which alternately warm and cool the tropical Pacific Ocean.

The strong El Niño that began in fall 2023 helped nudge global temperatures above previous records.

The heat surge that began in 2023 continued to exceed expectations in 2024, Schmidt said, even though El Niño abated.

Researchers are working to identify contributing factors, including possible climate impacts of the January 2022 Tonga volcanic eruption and reductions in pollution, which may change cloud cover and how solar energy is reflected back into space.

“Not every year is going to break records, but the long-term trend is clear,” Schmidt said.

“We’re already seeing the impact in extreme rainfall, heat waves, and increased flood risk, which are going to keep getting worse as long as emissions continue.”

Seeing changes locally

NASA assembles its temperature record using surface air temperature data collected from tens of thousands of meteorological stations, as well as sea surface temperature data acquired by ship- and buoy-based instruments.

This data is analyzed using methods that account for the varied spacing of temperature stations around the globe and for urban heating effects that could skew the calculations.

A new assessment published earlier this year by scientists at the Colorado School of Mines, National Science Foundation, the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA), and NASA further increases confidence in the agency’s global and regional temperature data.

“When changes happen in the climate, you see it first in the global mean, then you see it at the continental scale and then at the regional scale.

Now, we’re seeing it at the local level,” Schmidt said. “The changes occurring in people’s everyday weather experiences have become abundantly clear.”

California continues to battle devastating wildfires, with over 130,000 residents displaced and numerous state parks closed. Amid this ongoing crisis, law enforcement has arrested 60-year-old Gloria Lynn Mandich for felony arson. She is accused of starting the Freddy Fire, a brush fire near Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) close to the Ventura County line.

The Freddy Fire broke out on January 8 near Leo Carrillo State Beach, a popular coastal destination. The fire ignited around 12:40 p.m., burning approximately three acres before being brought under control. Firefighters from Los Angeles and Ventura counties collaborated to extinguish the blaze, preventing further spread. Initially, the Freddy Fire was believed to be a spot fire caused by embers from the much larger Palisades Fire. Days before Trump takes office, Mayorkas issues sweeping immigration orders

Sudan

Sudan’s TPS was extended for 18 months “due to ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary and temporary conditions … continued political stability … human rights abuses” among other reasons. It applies to 1,900 current beneficiaries who are Sudanese citizens or “individuals without nationality who last resided in Sudan who have been continuously residing in the United States since at least August 16, 2023, with or without lawful immigration status.”

TPS was granted to Sudan after President Joe Biden continued to extend national emergency orders citing national security threats related to terrorism, threats posed by Afghanistan, Sudan, Syria, and other countries, foreign threats related to weapons of mass destruction, and Islamic threats that escalated under his administration, The Center Square reported.

Ukraine

Ukraine’s TPS was extended for 18 months “due to ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary and temporary conditions in Ukraine.” It applies to 103,700 current eligible beneficiaries.

This was after President Joe Biden sent another $63 million in assistance to Ukraine on Dec. 2 and after $3.4 billion was sent by the U.S. Treasury Department for budget aid through the 2024 Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act passed by Congress. The federal government has sent more than $30 billion to Ukraine since February 2022.

Venezuela

Venezuela’s TPS was extended for another 18 months with no end date “due to extraordinary and temporary conditions … severe humanitarian emergency … due to political and economic crises.” It applies to those who arrived in the U.S. by July 31, 2023. Those arriving after that date are ineligible.

TPS was granted for approximately 600,000 eligible current beneficiaries from Venezuela.

Under the Biden administration, a record more than 1 million Venezuelans illegally entered the country, including violent members of the prison gang Tren de Aragua. TdA members are now confirmed to be operating in at least 22 states, The Center Square first reported.

DHS also issued a final rule to expand the H-1B visa program to allow U.S. employers to hire more foreign workers for “specialized” jobs.

The rule was issued after DHS last month added another nearly 65,000 H-2B visas through a different visa program for fiscal 2025 after already filling 66,000 H-2B visas.

The visas are used in the hospitality, tourism, landscaping, seafood processing and other industries. The most recent round allocates 20,000 visas to workers from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Haiti, Colombia, Ecuador or Costa Rica and 44,716 supplemental visas for returning workers who received an H-2B visa, or were otherwise granted H-2B status, during one of the last three fiscal years. The visa programs have been criticized for taking jobs away from American workers, tied to those who’ve committed crimes and been involved in forced labor conditions, according to multiple news reports.

DHS also expanded the visa waiver program to include citizens of Romania “to allow most citizens and nationals of Romania to apply to travel to the United States under the VWP for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days without first obtaining a U.S. visa.” The authorization is generally valid for two years, however, some countries have waivers dating back to 1991.

Whitmam County Commissioners issue moratorium on wind energy projects

Members of a community group opposed to plans for a large wind farm project near Kamiak Butte in Whitman County are celebrating a decision this week by county commissioners to place a moratorium on new commercial wind turbines.

Commissioners cited the need to update regulations on wind energy projects.

Save the Palouse, a nonprofit organization formed in opposition to the project, posted news of the six-month moratorium on social media.

“This is a huge step in the right direction, and we couldn’t have done it without all of your support,” a Facebook post read. “Thank you to everyone who has worked tirelessly to get us to this point.”

As previously reported by The Center Square, the proposed Harvest Hills Wind Project could provide power to 90,000 homes for 25 to 30 years as part of the state’s goal of reaching 100% clean energy by 2045.

In a Thursday interview with The Center Square, Rick McNannay, president of Save the Palouse, detailed the group’s objections to the wind farm.

“One of the biggest issues we have is them saying there’s going to be this windfall of taxes coming in,” he explained. “That’s absolutely not the case. In the beginning, there is tax revenue, and then as the equipment gets older, that depletes, and citizens are expected to pick up the difference in those taxes because people become used to having that influx of money.”

McNannay said his group is also concerned about losing beautiful views across the county that draw people from all over the world.

“We’ve got a huge photography business going on in this area,” he said. “Every time you go around a corner and look out over the rolling hills, there’s somebody stopped taking a picture. There are photography groups that come from all over the world to take pictures here.”

The state trying to exert control is the biggest issue for McNannay.

“Olympia is telling our local government in Whitman County what is best for us here,” he said. “That doesn’t sit well with me.”

McNannay noted the recently approved Horse Heaven wind and solar project in the Tri-Cities, which moved forward despite community objections and an initial recommendation from the Energy Facility Site Evaluation Council to scale back the project's size.

As reported by The Center Square, Gov. Jay Inslee then pressed EFSEC to approve the initial much larger project, which may ultimately include 222 turbines about 500 feet tall or 141 turbines about 670 feet tall. Plans also call for solar arrays and battery storage, stretching from Horse Heaven Hills just south of Kennewick for about 24 miles from Finley to Benton City in the Tri-Cities metropolitan area.

The project is likely to be delayed by a series of lawsuits.

“EFSEC isn’t even involved in our project at this point,” McNannay said, noting his organization has secured legal counsel, fearing the developer could go straight to the state to try and get the ball rolling despite the moratorium adopted this week by Whitman County Commissioners.

“We need to get control of our counties back to the county, and the more pushback each community gives the state,” he said. “Hopefully, they’ll step back and decide they need to start taking into consideration what the counties want.”

According to the project developer’s website, “The Harvest Hills wind project will provide low-cost, reliable energy and create economic growth for Whitman County. The project will bring 200 megawatts of clean energy and is designed to integrate within existing farms and ranches, adding resiliency to the Washington energy system.”

This project is under development by Steelhead Americas out of Portland, Ore., the North American development arm of Vestas, the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturer.

Despite the moratorium, developers are hosting a community meeting about the project on Tues, Feb. 4, at the Lewis Alumni Centre at Washington State University in Pullman.
