fast forward to 1953 and Wernher von Braun—the father of rocket science—publishes a book about humans colonizing Mars led by a guy literally called Elon!!!

Temps aside, it can be crippling in a place unaccustomed to driving in snow especially without the correct tires.

I was headed north out of TX coming home after the eclipse last April. Hit a severe storm which dumped a shit ton of small hail and grapple. All the sudden I'm seeing all kinds of cars and trucks breaking loose and sliding off the roads. Turns out they were driving with cruise control and tires meant for dry and wet roads. Being from just south of Canuckistan and driving with siped snow tires AND knowing not to use cruise control in such conditions, my only issue was dodging others.

Billionaire Elon Musk quickly jumped onto the subject, attacking Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour government, and rekindling a long-smoldering debate in the United Kingdom on what is often called the “Grooming Gangs” scandal.

 

But what exactly is the scandal? Why did it take so long for the systematic exploitation and rape of thousands of girls to be exposed?

 

Why are Musk and others taking aim at the current prime minister, given the scandal emerged more than a decade ago? And what have investigations revealed?

 

For decades, children, specifically poor white girls in various towns in northern England, were targeted and groomed by Pakistani-heritage men, while—as later investigations, court cases, and reporters revealed—local officials turned a blind eye to the abuse due to fears of being labeled racist or destabilizing community relations.

 

But it took decades to come to light.

 

In the 1990s, rumors began to emerge that men of Pakistani descent living in northern England towns were involved in raping children.

 

For example, the parents involved in the Coalition for the Removal of Pimping (CROP), later renamed Parents Against Child Exploitation (PACE), participated in a 2004 documentary that claimed white schoolgirls were being groomed for sex by Asian men in Bradford.

 

The result was “Edge of the City,” which was due to be screened on Channel 4.

 

However, it was pulled hours before airing, after claims the British National Party wanted to exploit the situation and the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police saying it might trigger race riots.

 

Groups such as The National Assembly Against Racism also lobbied against the documentary.

 

Member of Parliament Ann Cryer, representing Keighley, publicly raised concerns about the abuse of two girls in her constituency in 2002.

 

In doing so, she became the first public figure in Britain to speak out about allegations of “young Asian lads” grooming underage white girls in West Yorkshire.

 

She was shunned by her party, which ran the country from 1997 to 2010, and she said no one wanted to know, despite holding “constant” meetings with West Yorkshire Police and social services.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) signed an agreement with Trinity Health Care Services to register residents for COVID vaccines. The FDEM, according to USA Today, owed $50,578.50 on an invoice but accidentally paid $5 million more than it owed — $5,057,850.00, to be exact.

There were subsequent overpayments to Trinity as well. Now, USA Today's Ana Goni-Lessan reports, the State of Florida is suing Trinity to get back the money it overpaid.

In 2021, according to Goni-Lessan, Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick — now serving in the U.S. House of Representatives — was Trinity's CEO. Cherfilus-McCormick, the USA Today reporter notes, has been "the subject of an unrelated House ethics complaint."

In a letter to Trinity dated June 13, 2024, FDEM's Deputy Executive Director and General Counsel Stephanie Houp told the company, "Part of the responsibilities of doing business with the State of Florida is the requirement to return any monies received in error."

In response to USA Today's reporting, Inside Elections' Jacob Rubashkin went to X, formerly Twitter, and posted, " Holy cow! Florida says it accidentally paid a healthcare company $5.7 million instead of $50k. That company's CEO, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, then loaned herself $6.2 million to win a congressional race."

Cherfilus-McCormick was first elected to the U.S. House via a special election in 2022 before winning a regular election later that year. And she was elected to a second full term in 2024.

According to Goni-Lessan, the State of Florida's overpayments to Trinity add up to more than $5.7 million.

Goni-Lessan reports, "The State (of Florida) is arguing that Trinity, as a contractor, 'was required to return any overpayments of invoices for work not actually performed and money not actually owed,' and is suing for damages, interest, attorneys' fees, costs and other relief, according to the complaint."

There are a few rare newer gems like The Last Stop In Yuma County, Nebraska, One Hour Photo, Summer of '84, Desolation (to name some good modern ones) but none of them were big box office hits, mostly independent films with really good acting and suspenseful story lines. I still dig the old Dirty Harry and Kojak movies mostly.
