Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way. He wanted to protect an essentially worthless fish called a smelt, by giving it less water (it didn’t work!), but didn’t care about the people of California. Now the ultimate price is being paid. I will demand that this incompetent governor allow beautiful, clean, fresh water to FLOW INTO CALIFORNIA! He is the blame for this. On top of it all, no water for fire hydrants, not firefighting planes. A true disaster!

Fourteen current and former police officers with the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) have signed sworn declarations which say they believe MPD Assistant Chief Katie Blackwell perjured herself when testifying in former MPD officer Derek Chauvin’s murder trial.

Specifically, the group of former officers say they believe Blackwell perjured herself when she testified in court that the restraint method Chauvin used to subdue George Floyd in May 2020 was not a part of MPD officer training. In that trial, Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison.

However, many say the knee-on-neck restraint Chauvin employed was trained under the maximal-restraint technique (MRT), a restraint the MPD taught and allowed until 2023.

Those 14 statements were among dozens of declarations submitted by lawyers representing Alpha News in a defamation lawsuit brought by Blackwell last October against Alpha News, Alpha News reporter Liz Collin, producer J.C. Russia Map Shows Oil Hubs Hit in Dozens of Ukraine Drone Raids

Ukraine conducted more than 80 drone attacks on Russian oil refineries and depots in the last year, according to an investigation by the BBC's Russian Service.

The attacks, which took place in Crimea, occupied Ukrainian territory, and regions of Russia decreased in the second half of the year, but have long-standing ramifications on one of Moscow's top exports.

Here is a map created by Newsweek to illustrate the number of attacks and their locations throughout the past year.

Newsweek reached out to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine for comment via email.

Ukraine's continued strikes on Russian oil depots and refineries are significant because destroying these facilities may injure Moscow's ability to continue fighting in the nearly four-year war, due to lack of funding.

Repairing the facilities after drone strikes has become more difficult, as sanctions have hampered access to imported equipment, and the reconstruction is costly, as Carnegie Russia Center senior fellow Sergey Vakulenko previously wrote that they are "probably in the vicinity of tens of millions of dollars per plant."

Ukraine has repeatedly conducted attacks on Russia's oil refineries and depots to destroy one of Russia's most valuable exports, which is funding their war with Kyiv.

At least 64 of the attacks this year caused fires to break out, which, in some cases, resulted in the closure of the oil depot or refinery temporarily for repairs.

BBC's analysis found that most of the attacks took place in southern Russia, with 20 percent of all attacks taking place in Krasnodar Krai; eight in Rostov Oblast; six in Belgorod Oblast; and five in Oryol and Volgograd Oblasts.

In their continued strikes on Russian oil facilities, Ukraine's strategy has shifted, and they now target those used to supply military equipment, rather than their previous targets, which were more often plants that supplied the domestic market with fuel.

Ukraine conducted a drone strike on a Russian oil depot near the Engels air base in southern Russia that houses nuclear-capable bombers today, causing a fire to break out.

One of the largest Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil facilities in 2024 was an attack on the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in the Rostov region, causing a fire to break out.

The largest oil refinery in the country has been subject to previous attacks by Ukraine, one of which destroyed 1.5 million tons of oil and fuel products worth $540 million in July, according to Kyiv.

Ukraine's attacks on Russia's oil depots and refineries may have long-standing economic ramifications, as oil remains one of Moscow's key sources of revenue.

Russia increased its estimated oil and gas export sales for 2024 by $17.4 billion, and as of the spring of last year, their oil was still being imported by China, India, Myanmar, Turkey, and some EU countries.

Moscow's average daily production of crude oil hit a 20-year low last year, and this was reportedly due to repairs on the facilities, which were necessary following Ukrainian drone attacks.

Kyiv's attacks on oil facilities, in addition to Western sanctions, will likely have significant effects on Russia's economy, with it being the third largest producer of oil globally.

Filip Rudnik, a research fellow in the Russian department at the Center for Eastern Studies (OSW), wrote in a commentary article:

"The Ukrainian attacks and the resulting drop in fuel production have created a number of challenges for the Kremlin, including the need to deal with logistic tensions, strengthen air defense and increase imports of petroleum products.

"Given the political importance of fuel availability, reduced processing has forced the Russian government to use tools of intervention in order to ensure that the market is adequately saturated.

"For example, it has forced the fuel sector to redirect supplies onto the domestic market at the expense of the foreign markets.

Should the Ukrainian strikes continue and cause more temporary shutdowns at refineries, the government will probably have to step up its intervention, and that will generate costs for the state and may lead to market imbalances."

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Roman Sheremeta, a professor of economics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, wrote:

"Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries are the most effective sanctions! These strikes help burn the oil that fuels Moscow's war machine."

It remains to be seen whether Ukraine's strategy will continue changing when conducting drone strikes on Russian oil depots and refineries, and what consequences these attacks have on Moscow's economy and war effort.

SACRAMENTO, California —President Joe Biden and Gov. Gavin Newsom are racing to protect vulnerable Chinook salmon and__ Delta smelt__ in California’s main water supplybefore a possible second Trump presidency.

Former President Donald Trump vowed this year to send more water to drought-weary, Republican-leaning farmers if he is reelected. Biden and Newsom are trying to thwart the move that could send endangered fish closer to extinction by overhauling Trump-era rules before the end of 2024.

The Biden administration is on track tobakein more protections for fish in the way state and federal officials operate the 400-mile-long set of reservoirs, pumps and canals that moves water (and kills fish) around the state by Dec. 6, according to a federal agency schedule obtained by POLITICO. The schedule leaves only two weeks for public review.

“We do want it done at the end of this administration, and that’s the commitment that we’ve gotten,” Karla Nemeth, California’s director of water resources, said in an interview.

Republicans are already pushing back.

“Obviously, they’re being rushed for political purposes,” Rep. David Valadao, a Republican from the agriculturally rich district north of Bakersfield, said in an interview. “They know that it’s not going to be good. So that’s why they’re being so secretive.”

Complaints by farmers in the conservative-leaning Central Valley about a squeeze on irrigation water that often forces them to leave fields empty have long fed Republican talking points. This year, the state and federal government’s limited water deliveries despite the past two wet winters have given Trump additional fodder.

“They have so much water,” Trump said at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland in February, recounting an interaction with an unnamed California congressmember: “I said, ‘I see you have a drought.’ They said, ‘No, we don’t have a drought. We have so much water you don’t know what to do.’ But they send it out to the Pacific. We’re not going to let them get away with that any longer.”

For top Democrats in deep-blue California, water is a key front in their mission to “Trump-proof” environmental protections ahead of the election. Newsom has built a national profile as a chief antagonist to Trump, who has made California a frequent target and riled his base against policies like its nation-leading electric vehicle mandates.

Trump stayed true to a campaign promise when he changed Obama-era rules in order to send more water to farmers four years ago, after tapping a powerful lobbyist for Central Valley growers, David Bernhardt, as interior secretary to oversee the effort. But environmental groups and the Newsom administration immediately sued. Since then, state and federal officials have had to adopt court-mandated temporary plans every year while negotiating something more permanent.

Now, it’s the Biden administration’s turn to rewrite the rules, which both the California-run State Water Project and the federally run Central Valley Project follow in an effort to coordinate their joint operations.

Bureau of Reclamation spokesperson Mary Lee Knecht said in an email the anticipated federal listing of longfin smelt as endangered and the court-ordered interim plans warrant completing the new rules within the schedule.

For California, the upside of having finished rules in hand is that they could help bolster its legal defense if Trump tries to redo them again, said California’s Nemeth.

“It matters that they’re complete,” she said.

She’s also already considering how to lean on California’s existing state protections that go further than the federal ones.

“It seems likely that a different federal administration would reopen things and take another look,” Nemeth said. “We would still have our California permit, so that then becomes the driver.”

Meanwhile, California Republicans in Congress are seeking to codify Trump’s version of the rules. Valadao, also a dairy farmer, authored the language because Trump’s rules made it easier to send more water south, he said.

“I’ve got farmers all throughout the Valley that literally are running out of water,” said Valadao. “It was not a dramatic change, but it was a change in the positive direction for us.”

The bill’s supporters include the powerful Westlands Water District and other Central Valley irrigators, some of whom testified in support at a House Natural Resources Committee hearing in Tulare, California, last spring.

“It’s good public policy to support farming communities,” said Westlands board Director William Bourdeau, also executive vice president at nut, fruit and vegetable-producing Harris Farms, at the hearing. “It’s in our national interest.”

The language got dropped from the budget bill earlier this year, but Valadao said he would keep trying to pass it as a rider — and he could get a lot more help in a lame-duck session or if Republicans sweep Congress this fall.

The interim is making no one happy and puts both Newsom and Biden in an awkward spot.

The flip-flopping, a sign of the intractability of California’s water wars as much as it is a sign of increasing polarization, has exhausted farmers and environmentalists alike. The Biden administration’s rewrite involved more than two and a half years of consultation, modeling and analysis, said Bureau of Reclamation spokesperson Knecht.

“There has been an endless cycle of consultation after consultation, and that is a huge drain,” said Scott Petersen, the water policy director at the San Luis & Delta-Mendota Water Authority, which delivers water from the federal Central Valley Project to farmers. “It’s important this process be done right and not be driven by political timelines.”

It’s not simple. The rules for the projects have made good political talking points but they are so complicated that partisan differences come down to things like flow rates for a specific species or where in a river to set a temperature gauge. And it’s difficult to tease out the rules’ impacts amid all the incremental back-and-forth.

“I think there are some water users in the system that think that if there’s a change in administration that there’ll be a wholesale change in how business is done here in California water, and I would disagree with that assessment,” said Jennifer Pierre, the general manager of the State Water Contractors, which get water from the state-run system in the Delta.

I studied engineering in the nearby city in Indore and went to Manchester Business School in Britain to do an MBA. I returned to India to set up a subsidiary of a British company, which was a huge success. When I lived in Delhi, I wrote for the mainstream Indian media. I traveled widely in India and around the world.

I had first returned to India with the idea of improving it, but after 11 years, I realized that India was a sinking ship, with worsening and increasingly shameless corruption, degraded people, and a society that was falling apart. I had never met an honest bureaucrat or politician. I applied to emigrate to Canada and my application was approved in a record three weeks.

I now advise East Asian and Western corporations on investing in India. Most of what I tell them sounds to them exaggerated, unrealistic, and unbelievable. After much dance, drama, and a great deal of lost money, they begin to believe what I tell them. However, this learning is never institutionalized because of a refusal to understand India. This is a form of political correctness, a poison eating away the innards of Western values.

When I was a child growing up in India, I learned that “might makes right.” Power was often abused, with those in control acting as if they had a God-given right to exploit and dominate others. The display of authority could be so extreme that questioning it or expecting those in power to do their duty might lead to retribution. Those in authority seemed to believe that their positions were not for serving others but for personal gain.

People who showed respect appeared to have meekly accepted a lower, subservient position. Kind people had to hide their compassion, for being nice was seen as a weakness.

In India, I have rarely seen someone in authority take the initiative to solve a problem he was responsible for. When I was at university, an underaged boy who worked in the kitchen was raped and sodomized by the janitors. I reported the matter, but not only did no one in authority do what was right — something well within their power — the authorities and fellow students threatened me with severe consequences if I pursued the matter further. Devoid of empathy, they also made fun of the boy and me.

Shocker! Suspicious Drone Found In Bhopal Central Jail

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A suspicious drone was found in the Bhopal Central Jail by the jail authorities and the matter was handed over to the police, the officials said here on Wednesday.

The jail authorities rushed to the jail premises as one of the jail warders found a drone near the high security cell, near the temple where new barracks are under construction.

Jail superintendent Rakesh said that at around 3.30 pm on Wednesday, jail warder Sonwar Chorasia spotted the drone. He took the drone and handed it over to his seniors.

The jail staff tried to check the gadget. Prima facie, the drone is said to be ‘Made in China’ but the specifications of the gadget is untraceable.

The authorities were checking if the drone was having a camera or not and who was operating it. Later, it was handed over to the Gandhinagar police for investigations.

In the Central Jail, around 70 members of SIMI, HuT, PFI, and other antinational organisations are kept in a high security cell known as Anda Cell.

Their safety and security is a big task for the jail authorities and the new development of drones in the jail has raised the eyebrows of the department.

UK Special Forces Whistleblowers: SAS Had 'Golden Pass' To Murder Unarmed Afghans

Veterans of British special forces operations in Afghanistan have shared with a public inquiry their concerns that noncombatants including juveniles under 16 were regularly murdered in raids targeting Taliban fighters. One senior officer said the elite soldiers had a "golden pass allowing them to get away with murder."

Launched by the Ministry of Defence in December 2022, the Independent Inquiry Relating to Afghanistan was sparked by a BBC documentary that concluded that members of one elite Special Air Service (SAS) unit killed 54 people under questionable circumstances in just six months, with a great many slain after surrendering to detention.

The soldiers giving testimony to the inquiry did not assert they witnessed murderous killings themselves. However, defense ministry documents show that several special forces officers in 2011 had declared their concerns that the SAS seemed to be routinely executing Afghans, with one writing that the SAS and murder were "regular bedfellows."

One of the soldiers testifying to the inquiry, who's identified in inquiry documents as N1799, repeated accounts given him by an SAS member with whom he was training, saying:

"During these operations it was said that 'all fighting age males are killed' on target regardless of the threat they posed, this included those not holding weapons. It was also indicated that 'fighting age males' were being executed on target, inside compounds, using a variety of methods after they had been restrained. In one case it was mentioned a pillow was put over the head of an individual before being killed with a pistol…I suppose what shocked me most wasn't the execution of potential members of the Taliban, which was of course wrong and illegal, but it was more the age and the methods and, you know, the details of things like pillows."

When asked if the victims were as young as 16, the solider said, "Or younger. 100%." Other testimony related to accounts of SAS soldiers fabricating conditions that would be used as a pretext to kill detainees. In particular, SAS operators were said to carry weapons that would be dropped next to detainees, so it could be claimed they were shot in self-defense. "It was also suggested that the [dropped weapon] act was known as a 'Mr Wolf' – supposedly a reference to the fictional fixer Winston Wolfe from the film Pulp Fiction," Sky News explains.

Drone attack ignites oil depot at Engels airbase: New images emerged

January 8, 2025

Engels in the Saratov region was attacked by drones on January 8. As a result of the attack, an oil storage facility at the airbase is on fire, Astra reports.

The governor of the Saratov region, Roman Busargin, stated that drones struck Saratov and Engels. According to him, an industrial facility was allegedly damaged.

The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed in a morning briefing that 11 drones were allegedly destroyed in the Saratov region.

Astra analyzed photos and videos of the aftermath of the attack. It was revealed that an oil storage facility at the Engels airbase is on fire.

Photos later published by the governor of the Saratov region confirm this information.

Eyewitnesses report that the oil depot continues to burn. It is worth noting that the Engels airbase is located in the Saratov region.

After the beginning of the full-scale invasion, it became one of the primary facilities used by the Russian army to launch missile strikes on Ukrainian territory.

Ukrainian special services have repeatedly attacked the airbase in Engels.

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Emmanuel "Manny" Hostin are accused of receiving kickbacks by performing surgery and fraudulently billing a company that insures taxis, Uber, and Lyft drivers, the Daily Mail reports.

In the suit filed in federal court in Brooklyn, Dr. Hostin, 54, is named as the owner of Hostin Orthopaedics, working out of an eighth-floor office on Lexington Avenue close to Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal.

American Transit claims ‘rampant’ insurance fraud is endemic in New York State thanks to its ‘No-Fault Law’ under which insurers must pay up to $50,000 for medical expense for people injured in road accidents.

‘These substantial possible no-fault recoveries can incentivize providers with ill intent to over-diagnose, over-treat, and over-bill to recover the most money for themselves,’ American Transit said in a statement.

US Government Sues Warren Buffett's Berkshire-Owned Lending Company For Predatory Mortgages

A mortgage lender owned by Warren Buffet’s holding company, Berkshire Hathaway, has been sued by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), alleging that the business pushed people into taking unaffordable loans.

The Jan. 6 lawsuit was filed against Tennessee-based Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. The company provides loans for manufactured homes, also known as mobile homes.

“Vanderbilt’s business model ignored clear and obvious red flags that the borrowers could not afford the loans,” the agency said in a statement. “As a result, many families found themselves struggling to make payments and meet basic life necessities.

“Vanderbilt charged many borrowers additional fees and penalties when their loans became delinquent, and some eventually lost their homes.”

Vanderbilt is a subsidiary of Clayton Homes, the largest builder of manufactured homes in the United States. Clayton is, in turn, a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Most homes financed by Vanderbilt are manufactured and sold by affiliated companies owned by Clayton.

According to the agency, mobile homes are a “vital source of affordable housing,” especially for millions of low-income and older U.S. citizens. In July, the average sales price of a single-section manufactured home was $88,800, data from the U.S. Census Bureau show. In contrast, the median sales price of houses sold in the second quarter of 2024 was $414,500.

In the complaint, the CFPB alleged that Vanderbilt “manipulated lending standards” when borrowers did not have enough income.

“Vanderbilt often disregarded evidence that borrowers did not have sufficient income or assets (other than the value of their home) to pay their mortgage and cover recurring obligations and basic living expenses, like food and health care,” the statement said.

“Sometimes, Vanderbilt originated loans for borrowers who were already struggling, making their financial situation worse.”

For instance, in one incident, the company allegedly approved a loan for a household with 33 debts in collection. Just eight months after getting the mortgage, the family fell behind in payments, court documents state.

Vanderbilt also made “artificially low estimates” of borrowers’ living expenses to justify they could pay back the loans, the CFPB claimed.

In one case, the company assumed “unreasonably low” monthly living expenses for a household of five members that only left them with $57.78 in net income, the lawsuit said. Vanderbilt went on to approve the loan, and the family missed the payment after a year, going into default, it said.

Furthermore,Vanderbiltapproved loans to borrowers who the company had projected “could not pay” back the debts, the CFPB said.

Following Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement that Facebook and Instagram will no longer defer to ‘fact checkers’ because they are too politically partisan, the International Fact-Checking Network has convened an emergency meeting, presumably to discuss their impending obsoletion.

Zuckerberg put out a video noting that Meta will be switching to a ‘Community notes’ type system much like X has. He also announced that Meta intend to “restore free expression” on its platforms.

While that remains to be seen, it’s all a part of Zuckerberg’s apparent ‘awakening’ and realisation that he was being used as a tool of oppressive censorship and control by powerful elites.

In response to Zuck’s announcements, the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) has convened an emergency meeting of its members to brainstorm how it will go forward now it has lost influence over two more huge social media platforms.

FACT CHECK: Yes. there is such a thing as the International Fact-Checking Network.
