Russia points finger at Israel over Syria

West Jerusalem’s “unlawful actions” pose a direct threat to Syria’s territorial integrity, Russia’s UN envoy has warned

Israel’s “unlawful actions” in Syria pose a threat to that nation’s future, blatantly violates international norms and contribute to a humanitarian crisis in the region, the Russian ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia told the UN Security Council on Wednesday.

Israel launched a massive bombing campaign against Syrian targets following the fall of Syrian ruler Bashar Assad’s government in late 2024. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also proceeded to occupy more internationally recognized Syrian territory, moving into the UN-established buffer zone between the countries from the Golan Heights – a part of internationally recognized Syrian territory occupied by Israel since 1967.

According to Nebenzia, the Israeli military have occupied a total of 500 square kilometers of Syrian territory. “Israel’s actions are a grave violation of the international legal decisions, including numerous [UN] Security Council and General Assembly [resolutions],” the Russian ambassador said, calling on the international body to provide an “honest assessment” of the latest developments.

West Jerusalem’s campaign poses “a threat to Syria’s territorial integrity, Nebenzia warned, adding that Israel tries to present the results of its military action as “fait accompli.”

“The Israel air raids and shelling as well as waves of violence seen in many regions [of Syria] lead to suffering and casualties among civilians and disrupt the operation of the civil infrastructure facilities,” the envoy said, adding that such developments “are bound to cause concerns.”

Moscow will continue to provide assistance to the Syrian people in a number of fields, including through the delivery of humanitarian aid and reconstruction of the damaged infrastructure, the diplomat said, adding that Russia would seek to create conditions that would enable Syrian refugees to return home.

“By leveraging our nuclear energy advantage and proven technologies, we can displace reliance on undemocratic regimes as we generate more clean power for our economy and the world,” said Ontario’s Minister of Energy Stephen Lecce.

The Ontario government has already called on the Liberals to address U.S. economic and security concerns by matching U.S. tariffs on China, banning Chinese software in cars, delaying the digital services tax, and finally meeting its 2% of GDP on defence spending NATO requirement.

Washington — Capitol Police said officers arrested a man with a machete and other knives on Wednesday afternoon at the Capitol Visitor Center.

The arrest comes hours ahead of President-elect Donald Trump's planned visit to Capitol Hill to meet with Senate Republicans as lawmakers consider how to enact his agenda and as the public pays homage to former President Jimmy Carter, who is lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda. Those wishing to view Carter's casket are entering through the Capitol Visitor Center.

Capitol Police said they arrested the man after 2 p.m. as he was going through security at the Capitol Visitor Center.

"Our officers spotted a machete in the man's bag, stopped the X-ray machine, arrested the man, and secured the machete," the agency said, adding that it also found three knives in his bag.

The man was arrested on multiple charges of carrying a dangerous weapon, according to Capitol Police.

Law enforcement increased security around the Capitol before Monday, when lawmakers met to count the electoral votes and affirm Trump's victory.
