WASHINGTON (7News) — Federal Bureau of Investigation’s new Assistant Director in Charge David Sundberg started his new role at the Washington Field Office in early January.
One of his goals is to tackle gun violence.
“We are continuing to team up with all of the law enforcement agencies and community partners that work on these uh on these on these really atrocious crimes,” said Sundberg.
The new assistant director in charge has been with the FBI for more than two decades. According to the agency, he joined the FBI in 2002 as a special agent and was assigned to the Portland Field Office to work on organized crime and drug matters. A few years later in 2005, he transferred to the Critical Incident Response group and became a member of the -counterterrorism tactical team.
Sundberg even worked at the Washington Field Office between 2013 and 2017.

“It’s really an honor to be back here,” said Assistant Director in Charge Sundberg. “I knew it’s a unique office to return to the FBI covers a wide variety of criminal activity and national security matters and so we have a lot in that portfolio to look after.”
Sundberg explains the Washington Field Office doesn’t just cover D.C., but also counties in northern Virginia as well as Prince George’s County and Montgomery County in Maryland.
“It is essential that we continue to build trust in these communities so that people will give us information about who is perpetrating those crimes and to gain the trust that they might be willing to testify in such matters,” said Sundberg.
He says they’re working on providing the best analytical work with any information so they can better target their resources on more impactful investigations.
“We recognize that as large as this field office is we have a limited number of people and resources,” said Sundberg. “If we can work the most impactful cases to make the most difference to those communities, that's where we want to be. But we really need members of those communities to step forward and to and to be willing to talk to us about those problems.”
