Biden-Appointed US Attorney For Rhode Island Resigns After Trump Orders Him to Step Down

Zachary Cunha, the US Attorney for Rhode Island, resigned on Monday after President Trump ordered him to step down.

The Justice Department said Zachary Cunha intended to resign at the end of the week but Trump ordered him to step down immediately.

“Zachary A. Cunha announced today that he has stepped down from his position as United States Attorney for the District of Rhode Island, effective immediately, after receiving notification from the White House that the President has directed him to do so. Mr. Cunha previously tendered a letter of resignation to the President and the Attorney General on February 7, 2025, in which he indicated his intent to leave office at the end of this week,” the Justice Department said in a statement on Monday.

“I am deeply grateful to Senators Reed and Whitehouse for recommending my nomination to the White House, and to President Biden for his trust and confidence in appointing me to serve this extraordinary District and its citizens as United States Attorney. I have worked hard every day to live up to the example of excellence set by my thirty-eight distinguished predecessors over the 235-year history of this Office, and it has been the honor of my career to do this job,” Zachary Cunha said in a statement.

“Over the three years that I have had the high privilege to serve as U.S. Attorney, it has been my constant goal to make sure that the work of this District punched far above the weight that our compact geography and small staff might imply. By every measure, the men and women of this Office have met that goal, again and again, across every category in which we prosecute and litigate on behalf of the people of the Ocean State,” Zachary Cunha said.

President Trump fired approximately a dozen Biden-appointed US Attorneys last week.

“A source familiar with the matter told NBC News that one of the fired U.S. attorneys received a letter from Trent Morse, the deputy director of the Office of Presidential Personnel, that read: “At the direction of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as U.S. Attorney is terminated, effective immediately.”” NBC News reported last week.

President Trump is beginning to nominate his own US Attorneys.

Sanhedrin Letter to Trump: “You have been elected to fulfill a heavenly mission”

The Nascent Sanhedrin published an open letter to President Donald Trump, blessing him for putting faith at the forefront by establishing a White House Faith Office. The Sanhedrin called on the President to establish an International Divine Court for all nations.

“Dear Honorable President Donald Trump,

“May Hashem [God, literally ‘the name’], the Creator, bless you and your nation! We extend our heartfelt gratitude for bringing faith to the forefront of American and global culture by establishing the Faith Office in the White House.”

This refers to the president announcing last week at the National Prayer Breakfast that he would create a White House Faith Office headed by Pastor Paula White. White is an outspoken supporter of Israel who has been at the forefront of advocating for the Jewish State since October 7th. Earlier last week, White met for four hours with Prime Minister Netanyahu.

The Sanednrin’s letter continued:

“Your recognition of the importance of religion in public life is a step toward restoring moral values and spiritual leadership in the world.”

The Sanhedrin then listed the Universal Moral Code:

“The Book of Genesis has a profound message of unity and divine purpose for humanity through three fundamental principles:

1. One God – To recognize the cause of all causes (Genesis 1:1).

Trump Administration Asks Supreme Court To Permit Firing Of Office Of Special Counsel Chief

The Trump administration asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Feb. 16 to allow it to fire the head of an agency that protects whistleblowers after lower courts said it could not.

Special Counsel Hampton Dellinger, who heads the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, argues he may only be terminated for misconduct during his fixed-term appointment. Dellinger said a brief emailed notice he received Feb. 7 informed him he was being fired and did not explain why. New administrations routinely fire government officials without providing a reason.

Nominated by President Joe Biden, Dellinger was confirmed 49-47 for a five-year term by the U.S. Senate on Feb. 27, 2024.

The office describes itself as “an independent federal investigative and prosecutorial agency” whose “primary mission is to safeguard the merit system by protecting federal employees and applicants from prohibited personnel practices (PPPs), especially reprisal for whistleblowing.”

The Office of Special Counsel also enforces the Hatch Act, which prevents federal employees from engaging in partisan political activity, and safeguards the employment-related rights of military service members.

As the first appeal to the Supreme Court lodged by the new administration that took power on Jan. 20, the new emergency application in the case of Bessent v. Dellinger has not yet been docketed by the nation’s highest court, which means it does not yet appear in the court’s searchable online database. It may be docketed, or officially accepted for filing, on Feb. 18, the first business day after the Feb. 17 federal holiday.

The application says the government has a “very high” likelihood of succeeding on the merits. The Constitution “empowers the President to remove, at will, the single head of an agency, such as the Special Counsel,” the filing reads.

Federal district courts, like the one that temporarily blocked the removal of Dellinger, do not have the authority “to reinstate principal officers,” according to the filing.

The lower court has “erred in ways that threaten the separation of powers,” the document said, referring to a constitutional doctrine that divides the government into three branches to prevent any single branch from accumulating too much power.
