Another coronavirus feared to be powerful enough to spread through humans has been discovered in China.

In scenes eerily reminiscent of the beginnings of Covid, researchers at the infamous Wuhan Institute of Virology detected the new strain living within bats.

HKU5-CoV-2 is strikingly similar to the pandemic virus, sparking fears that history could repeat itself just two years after the worst was declared over.

The new virus is even closer related to MERS, a deadlier type of coronavirus that kills up to a third of people it infects. Virologist Shi Zhengli, known as 'Batwoman' for her work on coronaviruses, led the discovery, published in a top scientific journal.

The new HKU5-CoV-2 is a coronavirus belonging to the merbecovirus family of pathogens. Merbecoviruses have been detected in minks and pangolins - the animal believed to be the intermediary for Covid between bats and humans. This, the scientists wrote, 'suggests frequent cross-species transmission of these viruses between bats and other animal species.'

They added: 'This study reveals a distinct lineage of HKU5-CoVs in bats that efficiently use human [cells] and underscores their potential zoonotic risk.' HKU5-CoV viruses were first detected in bats in 2006, but the new data suggests HKU5-CoV-2 has a 'higher potential for interspecies infection' than others. However, the potential for HKU5-CoV-2 to spill over to humans 'remains to be investigated.'

Israeli news site HaMakom previously reported that Israeli forces strapped explosives around the neck of an elderly Palestinian man and used him as a human shield before killing him and his wife.

According to the report, the man, who used a walking stick, was forced to scout buildings in the neighbourhood to ensure they were safe for around eight hours.

An Israeli soldier told HaMakom that after the explosives were placed around the Palestinian man's neck, he was told "that if he does something wrong or not the way we want, the person behind him will pull the rope and his head will detach from the body".

While the original report did not name the victims, their ages and the date, location, and circumstances of their killing align with the Euro-Med Monitor investigation.

Report: Netanyahu Adds New Demands in Talks on Second Phase of Gaza Deal

According to Israeli media, Netanyahu is demanding Hamas leadership be exiled, Gaza demilitarized, and continued Israeli 'security control'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has added several new demands amid negotiations for the second of the Gaza hostage and ceasefire deal, Israel’s Channel 13 has reported.

The report said Netanyahu is demanding Hamas leadership be exiled, for Gaza to be demilitarized, and for Israel to continue maintaining “security control” of the Strip, which would mean a continued Israeli military occupation or blockade.

Hamas has rejected Israeli calls for the group to be disarmed, and its main demand has been for an Israeli withdrawal, meaning it would be unlikely to agree to an arrangement that keeps Israeli troops in Gaza. On Wednesday, Hamas offered to release all remaining Israeli hostages in exchange for a permanent ceasefire and full Israeli withdrawal.

Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s envoy for the Middle East, acknowledged on Thursday that it would be “difficult” for the second phase of the ceasefire to be implemented but said it was a possibility.

“The issue with [phase] two is that there’s supposed to be an end to the war, and the Israelis have a red line that Hamas cannot be in the government,” Witkoff said. “It’s hard to square that circle, but we’re making a lot of progress in that conversation, and hopefully it leads to good things and good results.”

Witkoff also defended Trump’s calls for the US to “take over” Gaza, which would require an ethnic cleansing campaign since Palestinians don’t want to leave despite the massive destruction caused by the US-backed Israeli siege and bombing campaign.

“I sat in Gaza with a bulletproof vest looking at the scenery, and I don’t know why anyone would want to live there today. It’s illogical to me,” Witkoff said.

The Trump administration has also backed Netanyahu’s stated goal of “eradicating” Hamas, signaling the US is ready to support Israel if it decides to restart its genocidal war on Gaza.

In the meantime, the hostage exchanges continue as Hamas released four bodies of Israeli captives, including the remains of Kfir and Ariel Bibas, brothers who were only nine months and four years old when kidnapped during the October 7 attack on southern Israel. Hamas has maintained that the children and their mother were killed by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza in November 2023. Israel said it identified the remains of Kfir and Ariel after receiving their remains but claimed the third body was not their mother.

Hamas is expected to release six live Israeli hostages on Saturday, and Israel will free hundreds of Palestinians from Israeli jails, including many women and children who were captured in Gaza following October 7 despite having nothing to do with the attack.

The original mission of USAID was to provide support to developing countries in their efforts to acquire knowledge and resources essential to development.

However, over time, the agency’s mission became corrupted and it was used as a tool for domestic political agendas and foreign covert operations by the State Department and the Central Intelligence Agency (“CIA”).

The United States Agency for International Development (“USAID”) was established by President John F. Kennedy on 3 November 1961. Kennedy created USAID to implement the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 and consolidate several existing foreign assistance organizations and programs into a single agency under the US State Department.

In 1998, USAID split off from the State Department and became a stand-alone agency, which led to a lack of transparency and accountability, resulting in widespread waste, fraud and abuse.

DOGE Revelations

The Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”), established by President Trump and led by Elon Musk, began reviewing and terminating wasteful contracts, leases, and grants across several government agencies, including USAID.

Musk described USAID as a “ball of worms” during a live discussion, stating that the agency is beyond repair and should be eliminated. He also posted critical comments about USAID on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a “viper’s nest of radical-left Marxists who hate America” and a “radical-left political PsyOp”.

Senator Joni Ernst authored an opinion piece in The Wall Street Journal, describing USAID as a “rogue agency” that has a history of stonewalling congressional requests for information about its activities and criticizing the agency for misusing tax dollars and protesting the review of its records by DOGE.

The criticisms of USAID by Musk and Senator Ernst are backed up by detailed lists of waste, fraud and abuse uncovered by the DOGE team and congressional committees.

At the end of last month, a tweet posted by DOGE showing the value of DEI contracts terminated as part of a broader push to reduce government spending on DEI initiatives and other programmes deemed wasteful or unnecessary. The list included seven DEI-related USAID contracts with a total contract value of $375.1 million. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the waste and abuse of funds were happening outside the USA as well.

On 3 February, the Trump White House released a fact sheet titled ‘At USAID, Waste and Abuse Runs Deep’, which highlighted numerous examples of wasteful USAID spending, including millions of dollars spent on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (“DEI”) and LGBT activism in multiple countries, as well as hundreds of millions of dollars paid to support poppy cultivation and heroin production in Afghanistan that benefitted the Taliban regime.

The next day, the House Foreign Affairs Committee also issued a press release listing several egregious examples of USAID’s wasteful spending in various countries.

Some recipient countries, such as El Salvador, have expressed that they no longer want USAID funds due to concerns that the majority of the money is funneled into opposition groups, non-governmental organizations (“NGOs”) with political agendas, and destabilizing movements rather than reaching real projects that help people in need.

Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele tweeted, “Cutting this so-called aid isn’t just beneficial for the United States; it’s also a big win for the rest of the world.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum proposed constitutional reforms to safeguard Mexico’s sovereignty after the Trump administration designated six drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, prompting concerns about potential U.S. military action across the border.

“The Mexican people will not accept under any circumstances interventions, interference or any other act from abroad that could be harmful to the integrity, independence and sovereignty of the nation,” she said, per Fox News.

Sheinbaum seeks to enshrine current limits on the operations of foreign agents into the constitution and establish harsher penalties for gun trafficking. “What we want to make clear in the face of this designation is that we do not negotiate sovereignty,” she said.

Sheinbaum said Mexico was not consulted when the Trump administration designated the cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.

Historically, terrorist designations against criminal syndicates have sparked debates over national sovereignty and whether such moves could justify extended actions by the U.S. government abroad. More Israeli Strikes Hit Crossings On Syrian-Lebanese Border

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced late on February 20 that it had launched another series of strikes on the Syrian-Lebanese border.

In a brief statement, the military said that its fighter jets targeted border crossings used by Hezbollah to smuggle weapons. It also noted that the attempts by Hezbollah to bring weapons into Lebanon from Syria “constitute a blatant violation of the ceasefire understandings between Israel and Lebanon.”

The Lebanese al-Mayadeen news channel, which is close to Hezbollah, said that the strikes took place near the Syrian city of Homs and in the Aakar district of northern Lebanon, close to the border with Syria. No casualties were reported.

So far, neither Hezbollah nor Syrian government forces have responded to Israel’s repeated attacks. While the two remain at odds over Hezbollah’s strong support for the regime of the former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, the threat posed by Israel could force the two to cooperate in the future.

“His goal is to abolish the Internal Revenue Service and let all the outsiders pay,” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Wednesday on “Jesse Watters Primetime.”

“As the president said, reciprocal tariffs, either you bring yours down or we’re going to bring ours up. If we go to their level, it will earn us $700 billion a year to be equal to everybody else,” he expanded Thursday on “America’s Newsroom.”

And it appears that the Trump administration is already taking concrete steps toward that goal.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is planning to slash approximately 7,000 probationary workers in Washington, D.C., and across the U.S. starting Thursday, according to reports.

The layoffs will affect probationary workers who have been employed for one year or less and have not been able to secure full civil service protection, The Associated Press reported, citing a person familiar with the plans.
