I worked for the government during a college internship and the IT position I was at had like 5x the number of employees, worked 2x less, and got paid 2-3x salary as a private business would have.
Worked at another place where I could have easily done all the jobs of the 5 other people there. Would have totally done it if they owner paid me a fair wage.
The only real place I saw people working at their max effort was at warehouses. The machines are moving at a pace where if you don't maintain adequate speed loading the parts and removing the parts, everyone can see you're slow and / or stupid because the line gets clogged and the forklift drivers are waiting around.
