Majority of US Republicans hostile to Zelensky – poll

56% of GOP respondents now view the Ukrainian leader unfavorably, up from 40% last week, an Economist/YouGov survey indicates

28 Feb, 2025 13:05

Attitudes among US Republicans toward Vladimir Zelensky have soured significantly as the Ukrainian leader has come under a barrage of criticism from President Donald Trump, according to a new Economist/YouGov poll.

The survey, which was released on Thursday, indicated that theunfavorable perception of Zelensky among GOP respondents rose from 40% to 56% in just one week. The trend comes after Trump suggested that Kiev could have avoided the conflict with Russia and also branded the Ukrainian leader a “dictator without elections.” Later, however, Trump denied having made any statements about Zelensky being a “dictator.”

Zelensky’s presidential term ended last May, but he refused to hold new elections, citing the ongoing martial law. Russia deems him illegitimate and insists that legal power in Ukraine now lies with the parliament.

Meanwhile, 47% of Republicans side with Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, down five points from last week. Overall, 58% of Americans continue to side with Kiev in the hostilities.

Meanwhile, 47% of Americans currently view Trump favorably, compared with 50% who view him unfavorably.

Regarding perceptions of international relations, the poll indicates that 40% of Americans view Russia as an ally or friendly nation, while 38% consider it unfriendly or an enemy. The European Union is seen favorably by 35%, while 36% view it unfavorably. China is perceived as an ally or friendly by 16% of respondents, whereas 64% regard it as unfriendly or an enemy, according to the survey.

The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted among 1,604 US adult citizens from February 23 to 25.

The survey was released as the US and Russia have begun holding talks paving the way for the restoration of bilateral ties and settlement of the Ukraine conflict. Both sides have touted the engagement as productive. Meanwhile, Zelensky is expected to sign a deal with the US granting the latter access to Ukraine’s vast deposits of mineral resources to compensate Washington for past military aid.

The Ukrainian leader has acknowledged that the US will not provide Kiev with security guarantees as part of this agreement, which has been one of Kiev’s key requests. However, an Economist report claimed that Zelensky does not intend to sign any further agreement with the US on the matter unless the guarantees are explicitly addressed.(good luck with that asshole)

Trump wanted to cancel Zelensky meeting – French media

President Emmanuel Macron intervened to secure an invitation for the Ukrainian leader to the White House, a diplomatic source has claimed (sure Macron, it’s sounds like gossip)

US President Donald Trump was reportedly reluctant to host Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky this Friday. A French diplomatic source, cited by BFMTV on Thursday, suggested that while the White House had planned to cancel the meeting, the decision was reversedafter Zelensky called French President Emmanuel Macron and asked him to intervene.

Zelensky is visiting the US for a signing ceremony regarding an agreement on rare earths and other natural resources – which Trump has described as repayment for American aid to Ukraine. According to a draft text published by Ukrainian media, cabinet-level officials will finalize the document with their signatures.

Asked about Zelensky’s potential visit earlier this week,Trump said, “I hear that he is coming on Friday. Certainly, it’s OK with me, if he’d like to.”

Macron visited the US on Wednesday, reportedly aiming to dissuade Trump from distancing the US from the Ukraine conflict. The Trump administration has stressed that American troops and NATO will not be involved in post-truce security arrangements. Insiders, as reported by Politico, dismissed the Macron-Trump meeting as “a waste of time.”

The minerals deal emerged from Zelensky’s proposal for the US to benefit from Ukraine’s resources, which led to tensions after he refused to sign an initial offer from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Zelensky publicly challenged Trump, a tactic criticized as counterproductive by associates of the US president. Trump blasted Zelensky, calling him a “dictator without election” with low public support.

The document set to be signed on Friday outlines a framework agreement at the government level, declaring both nations’ intentions to establish a special fund for investments in Ukraine. Many crucial details were omitted, pending a separate document that is reportedly incomplete.

Zelensky has said the terms have improved significantly.“Though it does not include all the security guarantees that Ukraine would like to see, I wanted it to include at least one sentence about them, and it does,”he told reporters. The draft text states that the US supports Kiev’s pursuit of security guarantees.

The minerals deal serves as a sufficient guarantee for Ukraine, Trump stated on Thursday. Hosting UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he told journalists, “It’s a backstop… I don’t think anybody’s going to play around if we’re there [in Ukraine] with a lot of workers.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the potential US-Ukraine deal on rare-earth minerals “doesn’t concern” Moscow, adding that Russia has “significantly more resources of this kind than Ukraine” and is ready to work with the US in developing rare-earth mineral deposits, including in “our new historical territories.”

Trump administration probes suspected fraud in Biden’s climate fund – WaPo

The $20 billion grant program was established by the former president to finance clean-energy projects

The US Justice Department (DOJ) and FBI have launched a criminal investigation into alleged fraud in the $20 billion climate grant program introduced by former President Joe Biden, the Washington Post reported on Friday. The probe follows President Donald Trump’s pledge to “root out waste, fraud, and abuse” in government spending.

The investigation centers on the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, established under Biden’s 2022 climate law to finance clean energy projects and managed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The probe was reportedly launched after the EPA’s newly appointed administrator, Lee Zeldin, publicly alleged that the money from the fund was disbursed with insufficient oversight.

“Roughly twenty billion of your tax dollars were parked at an outside financial institution by the Biden EPA,” Zeldin said in a statement on February 13, pledging to “review every penny that has gone out the door.”

“The days of irresponsibly shoveling boat loads of cash to far-left, activist groups in the name of environmental justice and climate equity are over,” he stated, adding that his agency would try to reclaim the money from Citibank, which was tasked with disbursing the funds.

According to the Washington Post, citing sources close to the investigation, the probe has so far been fraught with challenges. While the DOJ has the authority to freeze assets, it can only do so when it has evidence that they can be traced to a crime.

Last week, it approached Denise Cheung, a top DC federal criminal prosecutor, to submit a warrant request to freeze the funds. However, Cheung resigned rather than carry out the order, arguing that the DOJ lacked evidence. Subsequently, the department had Trump-appointed attorney Ed Martin personally submit the seizure warrant application, but was denied by a magistrate judgewho cited a lack of probable cause. Efforts by acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove’s office to launch a grand jury investigation and seek a court-ordered bank freeze were also rebuffed by prosecutors.

While it is not clear whether a warrant was granted after all,at least three organizations that received money from the fund reported that their Citibank accounts have been frozen without explanation, according to the news outlet.

In the most recent development, FBI agents have reportedly questioned EPA employees regarding the fund earlier this week.

The probe has drawn criticism from Democrats, withSenator Sheldon Whitehouse calling on Zeldin to cease efforts to reclaim the funds, arguing that his actions are illegal. (His wife hit a lot of it I surmise). Legal experts have also questioned the DOJ’s approach. Stefan D. Cassella, a former federal prosecutor specializing in asset forfeiture, described the situation as “extraordinary and probably unprecedented,” stressing that seizing funds without probable clause is illegal. (Really, she thinks there’s no probable cause! $1.7 Trillion spent by Bidan in last three years?)

(Next the need to investigate every congressman and Senators got a kick back for approving this fraud, both parties)

Trump a ‘difficult partner’ – EU nation’s PM

For the US president, Europe “is not the center of the world,” Poland’s Donald Tusk has remarked. Tusk was the EU backed candidate that stole the Poland election)

European allies of the US must navigate a new reality in which President Donald Trump does not consider them a priority, according to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. In an interview with the TVN24 news channel on Thursday,he characterized Trump as the most challenging American leader Warsaw has faced.

Trump's ‘America First’ agenda diverts US attention from foreign issues that his predecessor, President Joe Biden, deemed critical, notably the Ukraine conflict. The Trump administration is pushing for a swift resolution and expects European nations to manage any subsequent security arrangements concerning Russia.

”He is a much more difficult partner than any US president before,”Tusk said, emphasizing that for Trump “Europe is not the center of the world, Ukraine is not the main problem.” (Hey Tusk, America is very proud he’s difficult, we no longer have sissies and cowards in the WH)

A fervent advocate for the EU, Tusk said the bloc should actively seek opportunities to gain Trump’s favor.

”Everyone without exception should strive to persuade President Trump of our arguments,”Tusk said, asserting that Poland may be better positioned to do so than some other EU countries. He confirmed that the bloc is “definitely” working to present a united front to the US. (They really don’t get him.)

Tusk acknowledgedTrump's penchant for unpredictability, stating that supporters and adversaries alike must contend with his rapid shifts in attitude.

French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer have both visited the US this week to urge Trump for increased involvement in European matters and the Ukraine crisis, although their appeals were apparently unconvincing. Starmer reiterated his commitment to deploying British troops to Ukraine as part of a proposed European peacekeeping mission, to which Trump responded thatBritish forces “can take care of themselves very well” without US backing.

Earlier this month, US Vice President J.D. Vance criticized European nations for allegedly drifting away from the US by abandoning shared values, including commitments to free speech and democracy. He cautioned that if this trend continues, Washington may cease to recognize them as worthy allies.

Trump planning sweeping cuts to State Department – Politico

The US president is moving away from the “soft power” approach while attempting to trim costs, the outlet reports (“soft power” equals to “bribing countries” to do what they say)

US President Donald Trump is planning an overhaul of the State Department, aiming to reduce the number of diplomats and embassies while focusing on Washington’s immediate interests, Politico reported on Thursday, citing sources and internal documents.

According to the outlet, the Trump administration is aiming toprioritize transactional government agreements safeguarding US security and investment interests. This approach, however, involves scaling back on traditional “soft power”tools, including initiatives purportedly advancing democracy across the globe.

The new strategy would reportedly involve staff cuts and embassy closures. While the exact number of missions to be shut down remains undetermined, Politico sources claimed that Secretary of StateMarco Rubio is on board with the policy, with discussions suggesting at least a 20% cut in State Department staffing.

An unnamed official told Politico that the State Department’s Executive Secretariat had reached out to several key US agencies, including the Pentagon and the CIA, with arequest to rank US embassies based on their importance to their operations.

Politico also obtained a list of potential consulates slated for closure, including facilities in France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Brazil. In some cases, the closure of diplomatic missions would mean the remaining facilities would cover a wider geographic area. (Those are going to cause a lot of crying in those countries)

Several State Department bureaus focusingon education, environment, and scientific affairs could also face major cuts or closure. The Economic Affairs Bureau is expected to remain, aligning with Trump’s focus on transactional diplomacy. The Consular Affairs Division, responsible for visas and assisting Americans abroad, is also expected to remain one of the pillars of the department, but could experience some staffing cuts.

Trump has already issued an order on reforming recruitment for the State Department, with Politico suggestingthis would help create a more “pliable” and easier-to-fire staff. A former senior State Department official cited by the outlet cautioned that this could deter diplomats from expressing dissenting opinions, potentially undermining the decision-making process.

Tom Shannon, an ex-State Department official, argued that the Trump administration’s approach would “dramatically shrink the ambit of American diplomacy… [and] the purpose and the practice of our diplomacy and return it, if not to the 19th century, at least pre-World War II.”

Politico also cited critics of the overhaul, who warned that the reforms could have long-term detrimental effects on US foreign policy, particularly in the face of the rivalry with China. (Kek)

The Trump administration has said it seeks to reduce government spending, combat bureaucracy, and fight corruption within the country’s agencies, citing high national debt, with the campaign being spearheaded by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The US leader has already cracked down on the US Agency for International Development (USAID), portraying it as the epitome of a wasteful agency run by “radical left lunatics.”
