When we toured the Vatican 20+ years ago, we were told the story of Michaelangelo being forced into painting the Sistine Chapel.
M was well known as a phenomenal artist back in the day. As such, the Vatican asked him to paint the Sistine Chapel. He said no, as the Church was NOTORIOUS for not paying people. They asked multiple times, each time getting more and more aggressive. He still said no.
Eventually he moved out of Rome to hide from them. And eventually, the Guards found him and dragged him back, whereupon he was forced to paint the Sistine Chapel. And, no, he was not paid.
Years later, he was asked to design new Guard uniforms…..and now you know the rest of the story.
