US ‘reconsidering’ funding Ukraine – White House

President Donald Trump has paused assistance to Kiev to wait for a good faith peace effort, multiple officials have said

Washington has paused US aid to Ukraine while reviewing whether or not to continue, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt has said.

 

She made the statement in a press conference on Wednesday, when asked by a journalist if the aid freeze was permanent.

 

“The National Security Council told me… they paused or they are reconsidering the funding for Ukraine,”Leavitt replied.

 

“It's a pause for a review,” she elaborated when asked a second time.

 

The US suspended military assistance to Ukraine after a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky last week culminated in a shouting match. Trump later accused Zelensky of not being truly interested in making peace with Russia, rather aiming to get Washington “signed up and keep fighting.”

 

US intelligence sharing with Ukraine has similarly been brought to a stop, CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed to Fox Business on Wednesday when asked whether Washington “cut off” cooperation with Kiev. Trump had “asked for a pause” to see if Ukraine was ready to work towards peace, he added.

 

“President Trump had a real question whether… Zelensky was committed to a peace process,”Ratcliffe explained.

 

When asked about the military aid freeze to Kiev, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz likewise told Fox News on Wednesdaythat Trump would examine lifting the pause “if we can nail down these negotiations.”

 

The day before, Zelensky took a u-turn on years of denying negotiations with Russia and declared himself ready for an immediate ceasefire in a lengthy post on X.

 

Kiev is ready to move to end the conflict through an immediate release of prisoners, temporary ceasefire and a ban on long-range strikes on energy and civilian infrastructure, he wrote.

 

Moscow has repeatedly said that it has always been ready to return to the negotiating table, pointing out that Zelensky signed a decree banning talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon after the escalation of the conflict in 2022.

 

However, Russia has underscored that it wants a permanent, stable peace and considers a temporary ceasefire unacceptable, stressing that the time would simply be used to rearm Ukraine for further hostilities.

Don't get too worked up about this Supreme Court decision just yet. Per Turley, "The Administration is down by one vote but hardly out in the fight with lower courts over the control of this funding."

 

Basically, this was just a denial of Trump's request to stay the temporary restraining order of U.S. District Judge Amir Ali to force the payment of the money frozen by the Administration. The next round comes after the hearing on the preliminary injunction, which is scheduled for March 6th.

Government Advisor Warns UK Is Heading For Civil War

A top academic and government advisor warns that the UK will experience a civil war within the next five years caused by the “destruction of legitimacy” brought about by the government’s failure to secure the border.

 

Professor David Betz made the comments during a podcast appearance with journalist and author Louise Perry.

 

Betz teaches at Kings College London and has advised or worked with the UK MOD and GCHQ as well as being a Senior Fellow of the Foreign Policy Research Institute.

 

The professor, who describes himself as a “classic member of the establishment,” told Perry that British society is now “explosively configured” to suffer mass unrest.

 

He said the fallout began with the fracture of the social contract after the political establishment in the UK tried to subvert the Brexit vote.

 

Subsequent years have brought about a “destruction of legitimacy” as a result of successive governments’ open border policy and their inability to protect children from grooming gangs, in addition to a two-tier justice system presided over by a highly-politicised judiciary.

 

“If you want to create domestic turmoil in a society, then what the British government has been doing is almost textbook exactly what you would do,” said the professor.

 

Betz said that the situation is now “too far gone” and that a national eruption which will outstrip last summer’s riots is likely to happen within half a decade.

 

Writing on his Substack, Paul Embery outlined some of the other arguments Betz made during the podcast that led the professor to make his fateful prediction.

 

Betz contends that we now live in a deeply fractured nation and one that has much less connection to those aspects of its history which previously made it content and well governed. The nefarious activities of certain individuals and groups serve to exacerbate and magnify our divisions.

 

So, can a society in which such realities are playing out be said to be destined for civil war? Well, here comes the interesting bit. Betz explains that highly-heterogenous societies (those comprised of many different social, cultural and ethnic groups) in which there is no single dominant cohort are not especially prone to civil war. That is because no group has enough power or status to co-ordinate a widespread revolt. Similarly, highly-homogenous, or ‘unfactionated’, societies are not particularly vulnerable on account of the fact that it is generally easy to arrive at consensus positions. The danger area, Betz asserts, is in the middle – societies that are becoming more heterogenous and in which a previously dominant social majority fears that it is losing its place. In such societies, a nativist sentiment manifests in a narrative of what Betz calls ‘downgrading’ and ‘displacement’ – the most powerful causes of civil conflict. Throw in long-term structural economic decline and the apparent inability of the government to offer ‘bread and circuses’, and the sense of dispossession deepens.

 

He also addressed the phenomenon of ‘asymmetric multiculturalism’ in which ‘in-group preference, ethnic pride, and group solidarity – notably in voting – are acceptable for all groups except whites, for whom such things are considered to represent supremacist attitudes that are anathematic to social order’. This ‘provides an argument for revolt on the part of the white majority (or large minority) that is rooted in stirring language of justice’.

 

On the surface, the United Kingdom would seem like the least likely country to be susceptible to mass civil disorder, but thanks to years of societal malaise and mass immigration, it unfortunately feels like we’re on the brink of experiencing just that.

EU rapidly depleting gas reserves – Gazprom

The bloc has already drained its underground reservoirs, Russia’s energy giant has said

 

The EU has been tapping its gas storage facilities at a rapid pace andhad already used up its winter stockpile by Januarydespite seasonal temperatures remaining in line with climate norms, Russia’s energy giant Gazprom has reported.

 

Before the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Russian gas exports accounted for 40% of the bloc’s total supply. Gazprom, once the EU’s main supplier, reduced its exports there dramatically three years ago,following Western sanctions and the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines.

 

The EU has increased withdrawals from its gas storage facilities by 36% during the current seasonand by 22% above the ten-year average, Gazprom said on Monday, citing data from Gas Infrastructure Europe.

 

As of February 28, European underground storage facilities held 39.2 bcm of gas, accounting for 38.5% of total capacity – 24.3 bcm less than a year ago. The EU has withdrawn 58 bcm of gas this season –fifty percent higher than the amount injected during the summer.

 

This significant drawdown, combined with a reduction in reliable gas supply sources, poses challenges for the EU to refill its storage sites over the summer and prepare for the upcoming winter, Gazprom warned.

 

The EU has been increasingly reliant on more costly liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports since Brussels prioritized eliminating its reliance on cheaper Russian energy. While several EU nations continue to rely on Russian gas, many have voluntarily halted their imports.

 

Earlier this year, natural gas prices in the bloc climbed to their highest level in two years, driven by a combination of cold weather, declining gas reserves, and concerns over potential US tariffs on imports from the EU.

 

Adding to the challenge, the EU has imposed binding targets for gas storage, requiring a 90% capacity level by November 1, 2025.

 

The sharp decline in European gas storage levels has posed a serious challenge for both governments and energy consumers across the region.

 

Western Europe is already importing substantial volumes of LNG at elevated prices, with EU and UK imports reaching 9.8 million metric tons in January, the highest level since December 2023, according to energy analytics firm Kpler. The US accounted for 57% of the total supply.

 

Market experts warn that the competition for gas supplies is expected to intensify. US LNG export capacity has not expanded as quickly as expected,while demand continues to grow in Asia, Egypt, and other markets.

Former Polish president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Wałęsa has written a letter, co-signed by 38 other former political prisoners of Poland’s communist regime, to Donald Trump, condemning the US president’s treatment of Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukraine.

 

“We watched your conversation with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine with horror and distaste,” wrote the group, referring to Trump’s meeting with Zelensky in the White House on Friday, at which the pair were expected to sign an agreement but which instead turned into an angry confrontation.

 

Pp“We were also horrified by the fact that the atmosphere in the Oval Office during this conversation reminded us of the one we remember well from interrogations by the Security Service== [SB, the communist secret police] and from courtrooms in communist courts,” they added.

 

“Prosecutors and judges, commissioned by the all-powerful communist political police, also explained to us that they held all the cards and we had none,” wrote the signatories. “They demanded that we cease our activities, arguing that thousands of innocent people were suffering because of us.”

 

In the 1980s, Wałęsa was head of the Solidarity trade union, which led protests against Poland’s communist regime, eventually helping bring about its downfall. In 1983, he won the Nobel Peace Prize and, in 1990, he became Poland’s first democratically elected president after the fall of communism.

 

When Trump visited Poland in 2017 during his first presidency, he declared at the start of a speech at the Warsaw Uprising Monument that he was “pleased that former President Lech Wałęsa, so famous for leading the Solidarity movement, has joined us today”.

 

In today’s letter – which Wałęsa posted on Facebook along with an image of him previously meeting Trump – the signatories recalled the vital role that US President Ronald Reagan played in supporting the anti-communist opposition and thereby bringing about the collapse of the Soviet Union.

 

“The history of the 20th century shows that every time the United States wanted to maintain distance from democratic values ​​and its European allies, it ended up threatening itself,” they noted, adding that Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt had understood this when intervening in the two world wars.

Mista‘arvim (Hebrew: מִסְתַּעַרְבִים; Arabic: , romanized: musta‘ribīn, lit. 'Arabized'), also spelled mista‘aravim,[1] is the name given to certain units in the Israel Defense Forces, Israel Border Police, and Israel Police that assimilate into local Arab populations to operate undercover while gathering intelligence or conducting law enforcement, hostage rescue, and counter-terrorism operations.[1]

The Hebrew word mista‘arev (plural mista‘arvim) is a Hebraization of the Arabic musta‘rib, meaning "he who has become Arab", which refers to both the Musta'arabi Jews, Arabic-speaking Jews who lived in the Middle East from the beginning of Arab rule in the 7th century[2] prior to the arrival of Ladino-speaking Sephardic Jews following their expulsion from Spain in 1492, and the Mozarabs of al-Andalus.

 

Description

Members of mista‘arvim units are specifically trained to assimilate among the Arab population and operate within Arab societies to accomplish their missions.[3][4] Gary Spedding, a consultant on the Middle East, said that the activity of mista‘arvim "allows the Israeli military and border police to identify protesters they wish to arrest and detain. Israeli affairs expert Antoine Shalhat claimed that the main missions of the mista‘arvim "include gathering intelligence and counterterrorist operations."[3] Mista‘arvim dress as Arabs, know the customs and etiquette of Arab society and speak fluent Arabic, in the appropriate dialect. Mista‘arvim have participated in public demonstrations and may support the protests as if they were demonstrators.[3][5]

 

History

A mista‘arvim unit, with the code-name ha-Shahar (The Dawn) was established secretly by the Palmach in 1943 and consisted mainly of native Arabic-speaking Sephardic Jews, virtually indistinguishable from Arabs generally. With the outbreak of the 1948 independence War in November 1947, members of ha-Shahar were deployed as intelligence agents capable of penetrating Arab urban neighbourhoods and villages and, at times, in sabotage and assassinations. In 1948, the commander of this Arab platoon Moshe Ben-Zvi expressed interest in assisting Israeli operations of biological warfare. It appears that subsequently, on 21 May, two mista‘arvim, David Mizrahi and Ezra Horin, operating out of Dorot and kibbutz Gevar‘am were captured by Egyptian troops as they attempted to poison with typhoid and diphtheria bacteria the wells from which Egyptian troops in Gaza drew their water supplies, an incident which led Egypt to make a formal protest to the Secretary General of the United Nations later that month.[6] In his book, Spies of No Country, Matti Friedman tells the history of a pre-statehood unit operating in Lebanon and Syria.[7]

 

Training

Training for these units takes about 15 months:[1]

 

Four months basic infantry training at the Mitkan Adam army base – the IDF Special Training Center – near Modi'in-Maccabim-Re'ut.

Two and a half months of advanced infantry training in the same base.

Two months of the unit's basic training, which focus on advanced urban navigation and the beginning of counter-terrorism training.

Four months mista‘arvim training, which covers everything from learning Arab traditions, language, and way of thought, to civilian camouflage (hair dyeing, contact lenses, clothing).

One month courses – sniper, driving and different instructor courses.

Known units

The first mista‘arvim unit, known as the "Arab Department" (ha-Maḥlaka ha-Aravit), was established in 1942[3] as a unit of the Palmach. Other mista‘arvim groups in Israel have included:

 

Sayeret Shaked, a unit of the IDF, which operated undercover in the Gaza Strip in the 1970s

The Samson Unit, or Unit 367, which operated in the Gaza Strip until its disbandment in 1994 after the Oslo Accords[8]

Rimon, operating from 1987 until 2005 in Gaza[3]

Sayeret Duvdevan (Unit 217), established in the West Bank in the 1980s and still operating[3]

Yamas, a unit of the Israel Border Police[9][4]

Gideonim (Unit 33), an undercover mista‘arvim unit of the Israeli Police, still operating as of 2012[10][better source needed]

Hermesh (Hebrew acronym for "armored motorized infantry"), operating in the West Bank until 1994, when it was transferred to the Kfir Brigade

DC mayor to rename Black Lives Matter Plaza amid pressure from GOP congressman about losing funding

 

This news comes after Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., introduced a bill that would force Bowser to rename the plaza or the city would lose federal funding.

 

D.C. Democrat Muriel Bowser will rename the city's Black Lives Matter Plaza, just a few block from the White House, amid pressure from a Republican congressman that the change me made.

 

The mayor's office on Tuesday told a local NBC News outlet that the plaza will be renamed and replaced by a mural designed by schoolchildren. However there is no set time for the transformation.

 

This news comes after Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., introduced a bill that would give Bowser the option to rename the plaza or lose federal funding.

 

The plaza was designated after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which resulted in protests across the country in 2020.

 

Bowser unveiled the plaza in June of 2020 and year later said it would would be a permanent installation of D.C.

 

Restaurants, hotels and other businesses complained that the plaza, which was close to motorist, had created an economic hardship.

A Washington Free Beacon review of the taxpayer-funded company, which is supposed to use its $28 million HHS grant to develop vaccines to combat West Nile, dengue, and Zika viruses, indicates it has gone to great lengths to keep itself out of the public eye. The generically named firm has no website, and none of its top officers, including its chief financial officer, former Biden COVID adviser Sonya Bernstein, have disclosed their association to the company on their public résumés. Even the principal office of the taxpayer-funded business is a mystery, with Vaccine Company listing a different home base in each of its respective business registration filings in California, Maryland, and Massachusetts.

"From listing its mailing address as a P.O. box to being run by former Biden staffers, there are alarm bells going off as to how and why Vaccine Company, Inc. was awarded a lucrative government contract," Ernst told the Free Beacon. "Unfortunately, there are more questions than answers, because everything this company does is shrouded in mystery. It should not be this hard to figure out where $28 million in tax dollars are going. The American people deserve to know."

Federal judicial board orders Agriculture Department to temporarily reinstate probationary employees

 

The new order will allow nearly 6,000 Department of Agriculture employees to resume their work for 45 days.

 

The Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB) on Wednesday ordered the Department of Agriculture to temporarily reinstate all of its nearly 6,000 probationary employees, who were fired by the Trump administration last month.

 

The order comes as the new Trump administration attempts to restructure the federal government, including by drastically reducing its workforce. The administration previously advised departments to fire probationary employees, but the direction has faced legal challenges.

 

The new order will allow those Department of Agriculture employees to resume their work for 45 days, The Hill reported.

 

The board's decision agrees with the Office of Special Counsel, who claimed the employees were not fired for poor performance but for restructuring purposes. The board also agreed with Special Counsel Hampton Dellinger last week in reinstating employees from six different agencies.

 

“Agencies are best positioned to determine the employees impacted by these mass terminations," Dellinger said in a statement on Wednesday's ruling. "That’s why I am calling on all federal agencies to voluntarily and immediately rescind any unlawful terminations of probationary employees.

 

“Voluntarily rescinding these hasty and apparently unlawful personnel actions is the right thing to do and avoids the unnecessary wasting of taxpayer dollars," he added.

Macron In Anti-Russia Rant Says France Considering Expanding Nuclear Umbrella To Europe

 

In the opening six months of the Ukraine-Russia war, France's President Emmanuel Macron came under fire in Europe for being one of the few major political leaders to hold regular diplomatic calls with Putin in an effort to solve the conflict and avoid further bloodshed in Eastern Europe.

 

Now he feels he has to go full hawk in response to US President Trump, as on Wednesday in a nationally televised address he claimed Putin is now threatening all of Europe and has declared, dubiously, that Russian aggression "knows no borders."

 

"We are entering a new era," he told his fellow countrymen in the address. "If a country can invade its neighbour in Europe and go unpunished, nobody can be sure of anything." That's when he asserted: "Beyond Ukraine, the Russian threat is real - it affects the European countries."

 

Macron pulled out all the stops, and appears to be making himself into the European version of Russia's Medvedev, going maximal no limits jingoism. "President Putin is violating our borders to assassinate opponents, manipulate elections," he claimed in the remarks.

 

"We need to prepare," the French president said, amid a broader European push to 'fill the gap' in the wake of President Trump suspending all US arms shipments to Kiev, as well as intelligence-sharing. On Sunday during a London security conference of European leaders, UK PM Kier Starmer presented a plan of up to 30,000 UK peacekeeping troops for Ukraine, supported by France.

 

"I want to believe that the US will stand by our side, but we have to be ready for that not to be the case," Macron said in reference to shifting Washington policy.

 

And Macron then claimed, "France has to recognize its special status - we have the most efficient, effective army in Europe," adding that France has nuclear weapons to provide to the broader Western alliance if called upon.

 

Addressing where funds for a new European defense without US backing might originate, he explained "These are new investments which will allow us to mobilize private financing and public financing without increases in tax" - also as German parties agreed this week to a historic debt overhaul to revamp military and economy.
