EU ‘rearmament’ plan has no funding – Euractiv (KEK)

The proposal to increase defense spending by $840 billion is based largely on debt, according to the news outlet

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's attempt to increase military spending across the EU is not backed by cash and shifts the financial burden to member states, Euractiv has reported, citing senior EU officials.

The so-called ‘ReArm Europe Plan,’ backed mostly by debt and fiscal adjustments, asks EU nations to spend $840 billion, twice the EU’s 2024 defense budget, to counter “grave security threats.”

The plan “includes close to no fresh money,”leaving member states to secure “the real cash”themselves, Euractiv reported on Wednesday.

The total figure is based more on “hopes and guesses” than concrete reforms addressing the bloc’s production shortages, the report argued.

Von der Leyen has also proposed raising $158 billion through capital markets and offering it to members as loans on condition they buy weapons made in the bloc or its regional allies.

The requirement could involve at least three EU countries or two EU countries plus Ukraine. However, loan approval criteria and the prioritization of EU-made equipment remain undecided, the report pointed out.

Defense spending will be given an “escape clause” from EU budget rules, allowing governments to shift funds “rather than coming up with fresh money,” according to Euractiv.

While increased deficits could generate nearly $700 billion, it’s uncertain if the measure applies to all countries or only those meeting NATO’s 2% GDP target.

Another senior EU official told Euractiv that over time,governments must offset spending by raising taxes or cutting costs.

Von der Leyen’s push for increased defense spending comes amid growing pressure from Washington. US President Donald Trump has distanced himself from supporting Ukraine while urging the EU to take greater responsibility for its defense.

The shift intensified this week, with news agencies’ reports on Monday suggesting that Trump had ordered a pause in military aid to Kiev. The US president has repeatedly accused Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky of refusing to negotiate peace with Russia and exploiting US support for his own gain.

EU leaders will discuss von der Leyen’s proposals at a special summit on Thursday. According to a senior EU official, the measures should work “very fast and very efficiently” and require only a majority vote for adoption.

Some experts, however,warn that increasing military spending could strain national budgets already under pressure.

Milei To Unseal Records Connecting Swiss Banks To Nazis’ Escape Efforts

Argentinian conservative President Javier Milei has agreed to unseal records hidden for decades that would reveal how Credit Suisse and its predecessor banks helped finance escaping Nazis after World War II so they could evade justice.

In mid-February, Iowa GOP Sen. Charles Grassley —who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee investigating Credit Suisse’s historical Nazi connections — sent Milei a letter requesting him to unseal the records. “I continue to fight to shine light on the wrongs and injustices from this darkest chapter in history,” Grassley wrote. “This includes decades-long efforts to track the Nazis’ confiscation of all kinds of Jewish valuables and cash.”

Speaking of former U.S. Inspector General Neil Barofsky, who was appointed as the Independent Ombudsperson to comprehensively investigate Credit Suisse’s archives, he stated, “Despite the banks’ best efforts at obstruction, Mr. Barofsky has uncovered a ‘significant connection’ between Credit Suisse and many individuals who helped Nazis flee Europe after World War II via ‘ratlines,’ which are monetary and logistic pathways used by Credit Suisse and other institutions to help Nazis escape justice and relocate to Argentina, among other countries.”

Barofsky had been hired by Credit Suisse in 2021 after the Simon Wiesenthal Center found additional information regarding the possible Nazi connection, but he was fired when the bank felt he had gone too far. He was reinstated in 2023 after Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) rescued Credit Suisse. In 2024, Barofsky told the U.S. Senate Banking Committee that UBS had fully opened its archives. Two separate panels said that Swiss bankers routinely ignored Nazis stealing Jewish assets and also later blocked families’ efforts to reclaim their money.

“The goal and motivation behind this work is to bring about justice and transparency,” Grassley continued. “Regardless of how much time passes, the truth is worth pursuing and the stories of this dark time period are worth telling and making part of the historical record for future generations. … I’m copying President Trump on this letter because my investigative work is being done out of profound respect for the brave and courageous men and women of the United States Armed Forces who fought against Hitler and the Nazis, and freed the courageous Jewish people from those evils – a sentiment that he would most assuredly agree with.”

Report: US Holding Direct Talks With Hamas for First Time

According to Axios, talks have been held in Qatar between Trump's envoy for hostages, Adam Boehler, and Hamas officials

The Trump administration is holding direct talks with Hamas, marking the first time the US has ever engaged directly with the Palestinian group, Axios reported on Wednesday.

The report said the talks were focused on the release of the bodies of four Israeli hostages held in Gaza who have US citizenship and a US citizen who is believed to be alive, 21-year-old Edan Alexander, who grew up in New Jersey and moved to Israel after high school to join the Israeli military.

The report said the US and Hamas are also discussing the possibility of reaching a broader deal on a permanent truce, although Israel has severely violated the agreement reached in January and has now imposed a total siege on aid and all other goods entering Gaza with full US backing.

The talks have been held in Doha, Qatar, in recent weeks between Adam Boehler, President Trump’s special envoy for hostages, and Hamas officials. One source told Axios that while the US consulted Israel about the possible talks, Israel learned about them through other channels.

New Promotion System for Space Force Sergeants Coming This Year

March 4, 2025

AURORA, Colo.—The Space Force will start rolling out a new promotion system for Specialist 4s (E-4s) rising to Sergeant (E-5s) later this fiscal year, Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force John F. Bentivegna said at the AFA Warfare Symposium.

The new system aims to do away with annual caps on the number of E-4s who can become E-5s, allowing commanders to select as many qualified Guardians as they feel are ready for the responsibility of being a noncommissioned officer.

“If they’re qualified and ready and are doing the work, let’s make them an E-5, especially if they’re combat mission ready,” Bentivegna told reporters.

Under the current system, E-5 candidates are scored and ranked based on their performance and training records.

A selection board then chooses which ones advance to E-5 based on their qualifications and how many E-5s can promote that year.

With the new system, every E-4 who meets the qualifications will be promoted, removing any limits on the number of eligible candidates, Bentivegna explained.

A centralized selection board will still evaluate whether an E-5 candidate is qualified, but instead of ranking those candidates based on scores, “the board will focus solely on determining each individual’s qualification for advancement to E-5,” the chief added.

“This critical decision will be made based on a thorough review of each E-4’s record, performance reports, and input from their direct supervisor and commander.”

The new system is an extension of the fully qualified promotion system that already exists for Guardians ranked E-1 through E-4, where commanders evaluate and endorse Guardians as ready for their next rank based on demonstrated performance and readiness.

When the system expands to E-5s this fiscal year, it will start with a centralized selection board, but the goal is to eventually push that authority to the unit command level.

“This change empowers commanders by entrusting them with the added responsibility of identifying and promoting the most qualified Guardians to E-5 within their units,” Bentivegna said.

Most candidates make it to E-5 already. The promotion rates in 2022, 2023, and 2024, were 66.91 percent, 72.08 percent, and 95.66 percent, respectively.

The new system makes it so that all qualified E-5 candidates can switch from stripes to chevrons on their rank insignia. But that doesn’t make promotion a guarantee, Bentivegna said.

“This system ensures a continued emphasis on quality within our E-5 ranks, even as we expand opportunities for advancement,” he said.

The roll-out will start sometime in fiscal 2025. While the specific qualification requirements are still being worked out, the system will incorporate factors such as time in service, time in grade, and potentially professional military education as prerequisites for promotion, the chief explained.

There are no definitive plans yet for expanding the program beyond E-5s, but officials are always seeking feedback to inform any future decisions about it, he added.

The move to expand fully qualified promotion to E-5 candidates is part of a larger project Bentivegna has championed to enhance Guardians’ experience in service.

The project revolves around three themes: providing meaningful quality of life and service to Guardians and families; elevating Guardians’ warfighting mindset; and keep bringing in star talent.

“I want to make sure that your experience is one that you value, one that you respect, one that you brag about when you talk to your friends and your neighbors and your family,”

Bentivegna said in September when he revealed the plan at AFA’s Air, Space & Cyber Conference. “That’s why I envision the Guardian experience. That’s why these are my key initiatives.”

Part of the effort involves keeping noncommissioned officers hands-on in the day-to-day mission for longer in their careers, rather than shift to managerial roles.

“When I talk about the future, I want to really hammer home the expectation that you never lose that requirement to be operationally relevant,” Bentivegna said in September.

The new promotion system is meant to match that and help better match enlisted talent where they can do the most good throughout their careers.

“It’s kind of modernizing how we look at the enlisted talent that we have within the service, and how do we more tightly align the promotion gateways with accomplishments and responsibility,” Bentivegna told reporters March 3.

Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman visited Air Forces Southern headquarters Feb. 27, reinforcing the increasing role of space-based capabilities in the Western Hemisphere.

AFSOUTH serves as the air component to U.S. Southern Command, providing air, space and cyberspace capabilities throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, playing a vital role in countering transnational threats and fostering regional stability through multinational cooperation.

Saltzman met with Air Force Maj. Gen. David Mineau, AFSOUTH commander, and Col. Brandon Alford, AFSOUTH director of space forces, to discuss the air components’ enduring space program.

“We have adversaries who understand the importance of spacepower and are ready and willing to take it from us.

The Guardians here at AFSOUTH are not going to let them,” Saltzman said. “Their space expertise provides critical awareness across the region, enabling everything from disaster relief to efforts that counter transnational threats.”

The trip marked Saltzman’s first visit to AFSOUTH where he received a mission brief from local Guardians on their contributions to advancing space capabilities in the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility.

“Our AOR provides a unique proving ground for innovative ideas such as Agile Combat Employment concepts in the space domain,” Alford said.

“We’re demonstrating how multinational space teams can operate effectively by leveraging unclassified and commercial systems in a contested domain, and we’re eager to share these lessons with our partners.”

Air Forces Southern continues to integrate the space domain throughout its joint exercises, most recently distinguished during exercise Resolute Sentinel 2024 in Peru, where more than 66 combined joint space experts worked to provide essential real-time information to troops on the ground.

“Our Guardians are the first to ask, ‘how can we help?’ when disaster strikes,” Saltzman said. “The capabilities they bring to bear strengthen our readiness and build vital bridges with our allies in the Western Hemisphere.”

The visit also included a trip to the University of Arizona, where Saltzman spoke with ROTC cadets from the Wildcat Wing, addressing the future military leaders about the value of service in a leadership capacity.

“You signed up to do something important, something of consequence, something that others have been unwilling to do,” Saltzman said.

“Regardless of the reason that you decided to stand up and join the military, think about how much value you’re adding to our national security and the American way of life.”

As the senior uniformed Space Force officer, Saltzman is responsible for the organization, training and equipping of all organic and assigned space forces serving in the U.S. and overseas.

Saltzman’s visit underscored the USSF’s expanding role in regional security, emphasizing innovation, adaptability, and strong partnerships.

He praised AFSOUTH’s integration of space capabilities into joint operations, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening multinational cooperation and ensuring space remains a key enabler in safeguarding stability across the Western Hemisphere.

US drone lost over Red Sea on same day as Houthi claim of MQ-9 Reaper downing

A U.S. military MQ-9 Reaper drone disappeared over the Red Sea the same day Houthi militants in Yemen claimed to have shot one down, according to a defense official with knowledge of the operation.

U.S. Central Command lost contact with the drone Monday, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The day given by the official coincides with the one in an X post by the Houthis that they had downed a Reaper in a coastal region of Yemen using a surface-to-air missile.

It’s unclear whether the Houthis were responsible for the loss of the drone.

“If true, then this is the latest example of the increased reckless actions by the Iranian-backed Houthis that pose a risk to regional stability,” the defense official told Stars and Stripes in an email.

News of the drone’s disappearance comes just as the U.S. reinstated its designation of the Houthis as a terrorist group.

The Houthis have launched hundreds of strikes at commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023.

In response to the Houthis’ actions, the U.S. has carried out regular strikes against the group. The most recent, in early January, took out an underground weapons storage site.

The U.S. has lost 12 MQ-9 Reaper drones to the Houthis since the start of the war in Gaza, the defense official said.

The aircraft, which cost about $30 million apiece, are primarily used to gather intelligence but can also perform precision strikes.

Houthi activity in the Red Sea and nearby waters has significantly slowed since Israel and Hamas agreed to a tentative ceasefire in January.

Part of the reason for a reprieve would be to buy time for the automakers to come up with plans to move more investment and production to the US, a key Trump demand, some of the people said.

Another White House trade adviser, Peter Navarro, declined to say during a CNN interview Wednesday whether auto exemptions were coming. “I don’t bargain on the public airwaves,” he said.

Any delay would tee up another crossroads next month, when Trump is planning a new wave of tariffs, including on auto imports specifically, beginning as soon as April 2.

US car companies have pushed for an exemption for vehicles made in North America that adhere to parts-sourcing rules under USMCA, the trade deal with Canada and Mexico that Trump negotiated in his first term.

Ford Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley has been among the most vocal on the matter, saying last month that the tariffs would be “devastating” for American automakers and “blow a hole” in the industry.

Global tensions around trade remain high on Wednesday, with investors and business leaders looking for signs that politicians may walk back some of their recent actions.

The latest:

• President Donald gave a one-month tariff exemption for automakers after he spoke with heads of General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis

• Trump said in a post on Truth Social that he spoke to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and told him that Canada’s efforts to stop the flow of fentanyl were “not good enough.” Trump also said the “call ended in a ‘somewhat’ friendly manner.”

• Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Fox News that there could be a one-month delay on tariffs for sectors that are abiding by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which was signed during Trump’s first term. This would seem to include the Big Three automakers of Ford, General Motors and Stellantis.

• Lutnick told Bloomberg Television earlier in the day that Trump will make an announcement Wednesday regarding tariffs on Mexico and Canada. Lutnick indicated that there could be a change that was “somewhere in the middle.”

• China has filed a revised request for consultations at the World Trade Organization over the additional 10% tariffs Trump has imposed, according to the international body.

• The Chinese Embassy in the U.S. said in a post on social media site X that “If war is what the U.S. wants, be it a tariff war, a trade war or any other type of war, we’re ready to fight till the end.” China Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made similar remarks.

Drone attacks increasingly affect civilians in Colombia’s conflict

March 5, 2025

The sound of buzzing drones is sowing terror in Colombian communities under siege from unmanned aircraft flown remotely by rebels battling a high-tech state military.

Improvised devices, fashioned from commercially available drones, drop home-made bombs capable of killing and maiming. And there is growing evidence civilians are being deliberately targeted after a series of aerial attacks on towns and public spaces.

Last month in El Plateado, a town in the mountainous department of Cauca, a drone-dropped grenade exploded on a tented hospital set up by international medical organization Médecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), injuring local health workers.

“Events like these put the civilian population and the medical mission at risk, both protected by International Humanitarian Law,” said MSF following the attack.

But the next day, February 18, two more civilians, one an 80-year-old woman, were injured in the same town in a second attack by three drones dropping explosive charges into a residential barrio.

And a week later in the rural area of El Plateado, 1,000 people were forced to flee their rural homes after crossfire between dissidents using drones and counterstrikes from the army.

“The dynamics of the conflict are no longer those long-term battles, as in the past, but the launching of explosives by both sides, between the public force and the armed groups, which have sometimes fallen on the homes of humble people,” local mayor Osman Guaco told La W Radio .

El Plateado is currently the epicenter of fighting between at least one irregular armed group formed by dissident FARC guerrillas and the Colombian military.

The town first came under drone attacks last June when aircraft flown remotely from a nearby hill dropped bombs on civilian structures, destroying houses and damaging a hardware store.

“A bomb fell here, on the entire roof. There were five of us, fortunately nothing happened to us, but we are very scared,” resident Jorge Ramos told local media at the time.

The same week a girl was injured by a similar grenade that fell in the nearby Cauca municipality of Suárez, while in the department’s main city Popayán, the mayor’s office temporarily banned the private use of drones after an attack with explosives against a police station.

The worst, however, was yet to come.

A grim milestone

In July, a 10-year-old boy was killed by a bomb dropped on the soccer pitch in El Plateado. He had been playing with friends and family at a social event. At least 12 others were injured, some seriously.

The incident was the first reported civilian death from a drone strike in Colombia, a grim milestone labelled at the time “a demented attack against the civilian population,” by army commander General Federico Mejia.

The general accused combatants from the Frente Carlos Patiño of the Central General Staff (EMC) FARC dissident group of targeting civilians as a form of “pressurizing the townsfolk to reject the presence of state military” in the town.

This came as the state forces pushed into an area long dominated by rebel forces.

El Plateado sits astride access routes to the Cañon de Micay, a contested smuggling route down to the Pacific lowlands and major coca-growing region with 20,000 hectares planted along the canyon’s sides.

The region, previously held by the FARC guerrillas before their peace deal in 2016, has since been controlled by dissident EMC fighters now coming under intense military pressure.

The resulting surge in open conflict was prompting irregular armed groups to “find new ways to attack the troops that will allow them to obtain better results without losing their men in the confrontation,” a military investigator explained to newspaper El Colombiano last year.

Drone tactics copied from asymmetric wars in Ukraine and Sudan could give Colombia’s irregular forces a chance to even the playing field against a superior, hi-tech military.

The rise of the drones

In 2024, there were 115 drone attacks in Colombia, according to a report by the Ministry of Defense, mostly carried out by “criminal and terrorist groups against soldiers and installations.” Previous years had seen just a handful of incidents.

Military commanders voiced their concerns in March last year, and later released videos, purportedly intercepted by military intelligence, which showed these rebel units preparing and practicing with small commercially available drones, such as the DJI Pro 4, in some cases using bags of sugar to test the takeoff load.

Drones used so far have a maximum payload of one kilo (two pounds) which allows for an explosive charge of around 500 grams (half a pound) packed in a plastic pipe with nails as shrapnel.

The finned bomb is suspended under the drone and released by a radio-controlled hook.

These designs follow a pattern long established by armed groups of making their own armaments from industrial dynamite and hardware from a local store.

Small missiles called tatucos are fired from plastic plumbing piping, and larger mortar rounds fashioned from gas cylinders. Landmines are made from soda cans or food containers.

This new generation of lightweight drone bombs “can flatten everything in a radius of five meters,” explained a community leader consulted by Latin America Reports, who had witnessed drone strike impacts.

He also noted that drones were increasingly used in combat between rival irregular groups, as seen in his region of Norte de Santander where the ELN guerrillas have been combating the Frente 33 (33rd Front), a FARC dissident group.

Last week army troops in the town there of Tibú uncovered an ELN arms cache including drones and explosives.

Drone wars between irregular groups in rural areas were likely to be masked from official statistics, the leader said, on condition of anonymity given the current tension in the region.

Aerial arms race

Insights into competition between rival armed groups to dominate airspace came from interviews with combatants in Nariño, in the southwest of the country.

In Nariño, the EMC is battling the Comuneros del Sur, an ELN-dissident group that entered into peace negotiations with the government last year.

When they [the EMC] “hear the drones they run away,” a Comuneros combatant told La Silla Vacia last year.

Drones had an outsized lethal impact compared to more expensive guns and ammunition, said Comuneros de Sur commander Gabriel Yepes.

The group was using drones costing around USD $1,200, capable of carrying explosives for a flight of 30 minutes and to a height of 500 meters (1,640 feet) where they are less detectable by ground troops.

“A well-aimed grenade can kill up to three or four of our enemies,” Yepes told La Silla Vacia.

The Comuneros del Sur had recruited a team of tech-savvy operators, known as droneros, considered vital to battlefield success, he said. “Our drone unit is the one we protect most.”

But he also admitted competition from rival groups “already using similar technology.”

It is a race the Colombian military is also entering with its scramble to deploy devices that can disable drones before they can deliver their deadly cargo.

Drone busters

One recent success was the use of the Spanish-manufactured Crow counter-drone system at last year’s UN Biodiversity Conference, called COP 16, in Cali.

The system was activated to protect the zone where delegates and state officials from the 196 countries were hosted at a summit previously threatened by the EMC armed group.

The Crow jamming system “detected over 300 unmanned aerial systems and blocked 90 unauthorized drone activities,” according to the Colombian Air Force reports after the event.

Meanwhile military commanders are claiming considerable success with imported jamming technology such as the handheld DroneBuster, which is no bigger than a tennis racket.

According to General Federico Mejía, in charge of the Cauca offensive last year, while drones were “complicating the military’s operations,” many attacks had been neutralized.

“Fortunately, they have not impacted on the humanity of any soldier,” he said.

Civilians under fire

If the military have technical means to protect themselves, civilians may not be so lucky.

Whereas some attacks in El Plateado appear targeted at civilian structures, other cases appear to be incidents of collateral damage, where armed groups were targeting police stations in urban areas or groups of soldiers where civilians were nearby.

And historical data shows consistently that civilians are disproportionately affected by explosive devices such as landmines, launched bombs, or remote controlled devices.

“Explosive devices in both rural and urban areas continue to leave an indelible mark on society,” said the International Committee of the Red Cross last year when presenting figures from 2023, which recorded 380 victims of landmines and controlled explosive devices, including 61 deaths.

Of these 60 per cent were civilians. Colombia has a long history of lethal mistakes from home-made armaments, such as an infamous incident in 2002 when a FARC cylinder bomb misfired and killed 80 civilians sheltering in a church.

And whereas drones might at first appear to be more accurate weapons, a key concern is that military jamming devices used to protect troops could instead cause these armaments to detonate on bystanders.

“Once disabled these things could crash and explode on impact. We have no way to stop them,” a community leader told Latin America Reports. He asked to remain anonymous.

So far there is no specific data on civilian drone victims, though likely this category will be included in future reports. Our own analysis of information in the public domain reveals communities bombarded by drones in Cauca, Nariño, Valle de Cauca and Tolima.

Other at-risk departments, based on military finds of cached armaments, include Norte de Santander, Arauca, Huila, Guavaire, and Vaupes. All the signs are that drone warfare in Colombia – and its number of innocent victims – will reach new heights in 2025.

On March 5, South Korea's intelligence agency revealed that North Korean soldiers sent to Russia for the Ukraine war are receiving drone training from Moscow.

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) made this assessment amidst rising concerns that Russia may have provided North Korea with drone-related technology in exchange for Pyongyang’s military assistance to Moscow’s war efforts, Caliber.Az reports via South Korean news agency.

In addition to supplying ammunition and conventional weaponry, North Korea has sent approximately 11,000 troops to the Kursk region of Russia since October to assist in the ongoing conflict.

The NIS also noted last week that North Korea seems to have deployed additional forces to Russia.

North Korea has been intensifying its efforts to develop unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including multi-purpose attack drones.

Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, had ordered the rapid mass production of suicide attack drones as early as November last year.

Meanwhile, North Korea is set to begin drone production this year with technical support from Russia, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK.

This initiative follows a strategic partnership established between the two countries in 2023, marking a deepening military alliance.

A Russian drone attack targeted energy infrastructure in southern city of Odesaovernight on March 4, causing power outages across the city and disrupting heating systems, according to local authorities.

At least four people were injured in the attack, according to State Emergency Service.

Odesa Oblast Governor Oleh Kiper said on Telegram that a strike has damaged energy infrastructure, and confirmed that parts of the city were experiencing power cuts.

A Russian drone attack late on Tuesday killed one person and triggered power, water and heating cuts in Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odesa for the second day running, the regional governor said.

Oleh Kiper, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said a woman aged 77 had died of shrapnel wounds on the outskirts of the city.

Drone strikes damaged critical infrastructure, leaving neighbourhoods without services, he said.

Kiper said fragments from downed drones had damaged private houses and started fires in outlying city districts. A

missile strike had destroyed an empty sanatorium near the town of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, south of Odesa, he added.

East of the capital Kyiv, drones targeted a multi-storey apartment building near the town of Boryspil, smashing windows and triggering a fire in a business.

Kremlin issues guarded welcome to Zelensky U-turn

Donald Trump’s announcement that the Ukrainian leader is ready to talk peace is perceived positively in Moscow, Dmitry Peskov has said

Russia welcomes Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s reported change of stance on engaging in dialogue with Moscow,but obstacles to launching the diplomatic process still remain, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said.(in other words no one trusts him)

During his address to the US Congress on Wednesday, President Donald Trump read a letter from Zelensky which stated that “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer.” The message appeared to mark a change in position from Zelensky, who has previously ruled out the possibility of talking to Moscow.

Later in the day, Peskov told journalists that the Russian authorities perceive the development “positively.”

However, he noted that “the legal ban on the Ukrainian president holding negotiations with the Russian side remains in force.”

In the fall of 2022, Zelensky signed a decree which officially barred him from talking with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He made the move after the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics as well as Kherson and Zaporozhye regions officially joined Russia as a result of referendums held in the territories.

“Therefore, overall, the attitude is positive, but some details have not changed yet,” Peskov stressed.

Zelensky’s apparent U-turn on the issue of negotiating with Russia follows his public spat with Trump at the White House on Friday. Among other things, the US president accused the Ukrainian leader of “gambling with World War III” due to his reluctance to negotiate peace with Russia, and of being disrespectful and ungrateful for the military aid provided to Kiev by Washington.

Reports have emerged in the US media in recent days that Trump has ordered all weapons deliveries to Kiev to be put on hold after his bust-up with Zelensky.

The US president suggested earlier this week that the Ukrainian leader “doesn’t want there to be peace as long as he has America’s backing.”There have so far been no official comments on the suspension of military aid to Kiev from the White House.

Last month, Peskov confirmed that the “Russian side remains open to negotiations” with Kiev despite Zelensky’s dubious legal status. The Ukrainian leader’s presidential term officially expired in May 2024. He has refused to hold a new election, citing martial law imposed during the fighting with Russia.The Kremlin insists that Zelensky is not a legitimate head of state.

JAG rearrested Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett Saturday night, a day after she sided with the Court’s liberal minority about whether to allow Arizona election officials to reject new voter registration forms that do not include proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or a passport.

UK banned from sharing US intel with Ukraine – Daily Mail

Washington has already frozen military and reconnaissance support to Kiev, according to previous reports

The US has banned the UK from providing American intelligence to Ukraine, the Daily Mail reported on Tuesday. Several Western media outlets earlier reported that the US had suspended the delivery of all American military aid to Kiev, following a public spat between President Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky.

According to the British tabloid, all UK intelligence agencies and militaryoutlets “received an order expressly forbidding the sharing of US-generated intelligence” marked as ‘Rel UKR’ – meaning ‘Releasable to Ukraine’. The move would further undermine Kiev's ability to fight Russia, the newspaper noted.

The suspension, which reportedly has no exact timeframe, is expected to affect such British agencies as the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and the Ministry of Defense. UK military intelligence expert Phil Ingram told the Daily Mail thatthe US will “tightly control distribution of its intelligence to Ukraine”by relying on its own agencies based in Kiev.

On Wednesday, CIA Director John Ratcliffe also confirmed media reports that Washington had halted direct intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

The move comes after several Western outlets reported that Trump had ordered a pause on shipments of US military aid to Ukraine, which would apply to all packages outside of the country, including those committed by the administration of former President Joe Biden.

The development followed a heated meeting between Trump and Zelensky on Friday, during which the US president accused the Ukrainian leader of “disrespecting” America and not wanting to reach peace with Russia. An unnamed official cited by CNN claimed that the freeze on aid would remain in place until Trump decides that Zelensky is committed to peace talks.

In late February, Reuters also reported,citing sources, that Elon Musk’s Space X could cut Ukraine’s access to crucial Starlink internet satellite systemsunless Kiev signs a deal granting the US access to its natural resources. The agreement ended up in limbo following Trump and Zelensky’s tense talks. Musk, however, has dismissed the report as “false.”

Commenting on the possibility of the US suspending aid to Kiev, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it would “probably be the best contribution to the cause of peace.”

Kathy Boockvar, Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, ruling in her favor. Boockvar wanted to extend the deadline for absentee ballots; the Republicans sought an injunction.

Barrett recused herself from the vote. It was her first opportunity to support the man who fought tooth-and-nail to get her appointed.

“Trump didn’t say anything publicly, but privately he was extremely disappointed. He spent days questioning his own judgement. Even though her vote wouldn’t have swayed the decision, she was expected to cast her vote for justice,” our source said.

On December 8, only days after Biden had stolen the election, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Trump ally, filed lawsuits against Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, states that ran illegal and unconstitutional elections. Paxton petitioned the Supreme Court to invalidate illegal ballots, but the Court briskly rejected his motion. In a brief memo, the Supreme Court said “Texas invites this court to arbitrate states’ election process. That Faustian invitation must be firmly rejected.”

Amy Coney Barrett’s signature appeared on the memo.

“This was a sucker punch to Trump’s gut. His team presented incontrovertible evidence of election fraud. He then realized that Amy was a Deep State plant, and a clever one, a very clever one. Trump’s a guarded man, and she blew down his defenses, tricked him good. That’s when started thinking about putting out a sealed indictment on her,” our source said.

Trump and Rosen signed the indictment at 9:30 p.m. on January 19. The charges against Barrett include treason, conspiring with the enemy, and conduct unbecoming a Supreme Court justice. Trump is expected to unseal her indictment—along with many others—once he returns to power before the end of the year.

Apple sues UK over data privacy dispute

The British government has demanded that the US tech giant unlock protected user information stored in its cloud service worldwide

(Hence the $500 billion investment in the U.S. for more states)

US tech giant Apple has filed a legal complaint against the UK government over a demand to create a backdoor into its encrypted iCloud service, according to Financial Times, citing sources.

People familiar with the matter told the outlet on Tuesday that the iPhone maker had submitted a case to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, a judicial body that reviews complaints against the UK security services.

It reportedly marks the first legal test of the UK’s 2016 Investigatory Powers Act and its provisions that compel companies to bypass encryption.

Apple received a “technical capability notice”under the act in January, targeting its Advanced Data Protection (ADP) feature, an optional extra layer of encryption that protects its iCloud system. The notice required the company to provide a means for decrypting user data, which is currently protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only users can access their information.

In response,last month Apple withdrew its most secure online backup service from the UK rather than comply with the notice. The company, which previously stated it would never compromise its security features, expressed disappointment over having to take the step. The British government, however, still believes the company has failed to comply with its order, FT wrote.

The tribunal will consider whether the notice to Apple was lawful and, if not, could order it quashed. The case could be heard as soon as this month, although it is unclear whether there will be any public disclosure of the hearing, FT wrote,noting the government is likely to argue the case should be restricted on national security grounds.

The order has drawn criticism from US officials,including President Donald Trump, over privacy violations that risk breaching the two countries’ data agreement. Trump compared it to “something you might hear about with China,”telling British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, “You can’t do this.”

The UK government argues that breaking through the shield of encryption is vital to protecting the public from terrorist threats and investigating child sexual abuse.(that’s a lie they want to arrest meme makers and those who disagree with the government)

“The UK has a long-standing position of protecting our citizens from the very worst crimes, such as child sex abuse and terrorism, at the same time as protecting people’s privacy,”the UK Home Office spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Apple did not comment on its legal complaint but pointed to its statement last month,when it announced it could “no longer offer” iCloud ADP in the UK.The tech giant has repeatedly asserted thatit would “never build a backdoor or master key” to any of its products or services.

The request for a backdoor to user data would allow law enforcement and security agencies – with a court-approved warrant – to access iPhone backups and other encrypted cloud data that even Apple cannot reach, according to FT.

Something's happening here, but what it is ain't exactly clear, according to UFO documentary filmmaker Dan Farah, who interviewed current and former senior members of the U.S. government, military, and intelligence community on the record to look at what's going down.

Farah's "The Age of Disclosure" world premiere is Sunday at the South by Southwest Film Festival, and The Hollywood Reporter's Q&A gives a glimpse into knowing about the unknown as known in Congress as unidentified anomalous phenomenon — the fancy new name for UFOs.

"None of the government leadership I spoke to are debating whether this is real," Farah told THR.

That includes now-Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his chilling, eye-opening warning on UAPs that hits closer to home than science-fiction stories of little green men.

"There's a scene in the documentary that I find especially impactful, where Marco Rubio talks about how a lack of imagination has historically led to all of the greatest intelligence failures and disasters — from Pearl Harbor to 9/11 — and that he doesn't want that to happen again," Farah told THR.

"He says in the film, 'We've had repeated instances of something operating in the airspace over restricted nuclear facilities, and it's not ours.

And we don't know whose it is. That alone deserves inquiry, deserves attention, deserves focus.' "

Farah equates that warning to the biggest attack on America in history on 9/11.

"Prior to 9/11, we didn't put enough money toward counter-terrorism, and our intelligence agencies didn't share enough information," he continued.

"Everyone looked back and said, 'We could have done this better.'

"My interview subjects point out that we're now in a situation where that stigma around UAPs is creating hurdles for us to appropriately address this issue with a whole government approach.

There's not the appropriate amount of funding going toward it and there's not the appropriate amount of oversight."

Farah interviewed 34 current and former senior members of the U.S. government, military, and intelligence community on the record in his documentary, making it unique in that it puts names and recognizable faces like Rubio's in it.

"I hope I made a film that makes the public aware of a very serious situation that impacts us all," Farah told THR.

"I had multiple senators tell me that they thought my documentary would be one of the most effective tools for helping make the public aware of the truth in a way that could get the rest of the government to take this topic more seriously."

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., co-sponsored the UAP Disclosure Act, which was also endorsed by Rubio and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.

"The act had very specific language to try to use the law to bring about disclosure," Farah told THR.

"Schumer literally included a quote saying, 'The American public has a right to learn about technologies of unknown origins, non-human intelligence, and unexplainable phenomena.'

"This is very specific language. When you read that, any average person would say to themselves, 'Oh my God, is this real?' Yes, it is real.

"Something else that I found really eye-opening is how truly bipartisan this topic is at a time where Democrats and Republicans don't agree on anything.

The leadership of both parties are completely aligned on how serious this is.

None of the government leadership I spoke to — who have access to very sensitive classified information — were debating whether this is real. None of them."

NASA's stranded astronauts have put on a brave face throughout their uncertain nine-month stay on the International Space Station - but that appeared to slip in a recent interview.

Barry Wilmore seemed to suggest he and his crewmate Sunita Williams had been caught up in political games in Washington.

SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk, whose spaceflight company was tasked with bringing Williams and Wilmore home later this month, has repeatedly said the Biden administration 'abandoned' them for 'political reasons.'

The astronaut then gushed over Trump and Musk, saying 'we have the utmost respect for them.'

The interview comes just weeks after Trump told Musk to 'go get' the astronauts as soon as possible, leading to slightly earlier return date set for March 19 or 20.

During a Friday appearance on Joe Rogan's podcast, the Joe Rogan Experience, Musk said the Biden administration did not want to jeopardize Kamala Harris' presidential campaign and intentionally 'pushed the return date past the inauguration date.'

Democrat Congressman reveals plan to impeach Trump

Representative Al Green was ejected from the US president’s speech to Congress for shouting and refusing to sit down

Democratic Congressman Al Green of Texas, one of the first to formally call for the impeachment of US President Donald Trump during his first term, has said he wants to give it another shot.

Green said that to the press on Tuesday, right after he was kicked out of the House chamber for heckling Trump during his speech to Congress.

“I was making it clear to the president that he has no mandate to cut Medicaid,” he explained to reporters when asked what he was shouting before being ejected.

He added that his constituents are worried that Trump’s budget cuts will cut into their health care coverage.

“I’m also working on my articles of impeachment,” he added.

“This president is unfit. He should not hold the office. Thirty-four felony convictions, two times impeached,” the congressman said.

Last year, Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to hide “hush money” payments to a porn star. He was impeached twice by the House of Representatives during his first presidential term, in 2019 and in 2021, but was acquitted both times by the Senate.

Green introduced some of the first articles of impeachment against Trump in 2017, before the rest of the Democratic Party pushed for the measure.

“I want him to know that his budget calls for deep cuts in Medicaid,” Green said on Tuesday. (Because all the Medicaid participants are fake and kick the money back to Dem politicians)

Last month, Republicans pushed through spending plans for massive, trillion-dollar budget cuts over the next ten years. Some $880 billion of planned cuts were slated for the Energy and Commerce Committee, the agency that oversees Medicaid, but did not mention downsizing the health coverage program specifically. While the GOP has repeatedly stressed that it's not planning to slash Medicaid funding, officials have raised concerns about its future.

Earlier in February, Trump said that the program would not be affected by his plans to trim the fat from the federal budget.

The Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department is charging the conservative legal watchdog, Judicial Watch, more than $1.5 million to access bodycam footage of the Jan. 6 Capitol protests.

On Tuesday, the non-profit published a press release outlining the department’s demands following a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed last summer. Judicial Watch filed the suit after local law enforcement refused to release the footage in August 2021.

“The DC Metro Police initially rejected Judicial Watch’s request because, it claimed, the videos were, at the time, ‘part of an ongoing investigation and criminal proceeding,'” Judicial Watch said Tuesday. “But since President Trumps [sic] pardons of January 6 defendants, the DC government will make public the videos (supposedly containing over one thousand hours of footage) if Judicial Watch agrees to pay over $1.5 million.”

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said in Tuesday’s press release, “There never has been a legitimate reason to withhold the January 6 police bodycam videos.”

“If they wanted the videos out for political reasons, they’d be public, but instead the DC government wants more than $1.5 million in order for the public to view its January 6 videos,” Fitton said.

Russia jails British mercenary for 19 years (VIDEO)

James Scott Rhys Anderson has been found guilty of terrorism against civilians in Kursk Region, officials have said

A Russian court has sentenced a British mercenary to 19 years in prison for fighting for Ukraine and committing a “terrorist act” in Kursk Region.

In a statement on Wednesday, Russia’s Investigative Committee said that British citizen James Scott Rhys Anderson, 22, “took direct part in the armed conflict on the territory of the Russian Federation for material compensation.”

Anderson invaded Russia’s territory together with Ukrainian forces last Novemberand “committed crimes against the civilian population” in Kursk Region, the committee said. Officials have not provided any further details on the specifics of the charges.

Anderson is expected to serve his first five years in prison and the remainder in a maximum-security penal colony.

He previously claimed that Ukrainian commanders had forced him to enter Russia, adding that they had taken away his identification papers and cell phone.He also stated that he had served in the UK military as a signals operator between 2019 and 2023 before deciding to join Kiev’s foreign legion. According to Anderson, once he arrived in the country, he was mainly involved in training local military personnel.

The UK Foreign Office has vowed to provide all the necessary support to Anderson but has not commented on the specifics of the charges or the trial proceedings.

Russian authorities have consistently prosecuted foreign mercenaries fighting for Ukraine, warning that any troops supporting Kiev would be considered “legitimate targets.”

In January, a Russian court sentenced retired US Army Ranger Patrick Creed to 13 years in prison for serving with Ukraine’s armed forces between 2022 and 2023.
