'Things may get heated in Congress, but never do they fall apart like this.

 

Opposition lawmakers in Serbia threw smoke grenades and tear gas at fellow parliamentarians in a show of opposition to the government and to express their support for current student protests.

 

The demonstrations were a response to the collapse of a roof at a train station several months ago that killed 15 people and now threatens to bring down the country’s government.

 

The attack took place during a legislative session after the ruling coalition, led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), approved the parliamentary agenda.

 

As the agenda was approved, several opposition politicians rushed toward the parliamentary speaker, clashing with security guards.

 

Other individuals then threw smoke grenades and tear gas, covering the room in black and pink smoke.

 

Two people were injured by the attack, according to House Speaker Ana Brnabic, with one suffering a stroke and currently in critical condition.

 

“The parliament will continue to work and to defend Serbia,” she told the session.

 

Ironically, the government’s agenda involved meeting some of the opposition’s demands.

 

This included passing a law increasing funding for universities and also noting the resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic.

 

However, opposition lawmakers insisted the session was illegal and consequently chose to attack their colleagues.

 

Serbia is a parliamentary republic led by President Aleksandar Vučić and the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which is said to have center-right and nationalist leanings.

 

While officially seeking EU membership, Serbia also maintains close ties with Russia and China, making its true geopolitical loyalties unclear.

 

Amid calls to step down, Vučić has accused foreign powers of using “hybrid tactics” to undermine his government, similar to what many globalists have tried to do in Hungary.

 

“I will expose in full detail how much money was paid over the last four years to destroy Serbia and make it a vassal state,” he said recently.

 

“They want Serbia to stop making its own decisions and instead serve foreign interests.”

Several Statements in Ray Epps First In-Person FBI Recording From March 2021 Calls Into Question Key Issues From Epps’ Testimony

The Gateway Pundit had obtained, exclusively, a recording of the first-known interview of James “Ray” Epps after the protest at the US Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

 

The Gateway Pundit’s Alicia Powe has previously reported on some of the discoveries from this recording in a three-part series on The Gateway Pundit (part 1, part 2 and part 3).

 

The interview was conducted at the office of John Blischak, Epps’ attorney, on March 3, 2021 by Agents Alexander Simms and Rob Kalinowski (sp?). It was a voluntary interview that followed his January 8th phone call to the FBI regarding his placement on the “Most Wanted” list at #16.

 

"We Need More People”

The first major discrepancy in Epps’ testimony is something The Gateway Pundit published exclusively after receiving a statement from Ryan Samsel’s co-defendant, James Grant once he was clear of the Department of Justice’s wrath.

 

Epps, during his interview with the FBI, said that he told Samsel, “That’s not why we’re here…don’t be doing that.” Grant, and Samsel (following the J6 pardons), confirmed that Epps said “We need more people.” In fact, it is evident on the YouTube video from that day.

 

Ironically, according to the New York Times, Ryan Samsel told the FBI in January 2021 that when Epps whispered in his ear shortly before pushing the barricades, “his entire words were ‘Relax, the cops are just doing their job.‘”

 

The New York Times wrote that they obtained a recording of this interview, however, they did not publish the recording and when asked to review it, they did not respond.

 

Samsel did acknowledge that he had an informal interview with the FBI on January 30th, 2021, in which they provided him with coffee and a fresh can of Copenhagen Mint, his chew of choice.

 

During that interview, according to Samsel, the FBI was trying to convince him to confess that Epps was the “voice of reason.” When Samsel asked what charges he was facing, the agents responded that it was up to him, but he could possibly face conspiracy to murder an officer.

Part two

Officer Caroline Edwards

Moments after Epps had whispered in Samsel’s ear, the crowd around Epps pushed the bike rack barricades back and forth and caused US Capitol Police Officer Caroline Edwards to fall backwards towards the steps and hit her head.

 

According to Epps’ interview, he had attempted to help Edwards up off the ground before being a policeman “came over with a club” causing him to “back off.”

 

According to video evidence, that is not at all the case. In fact, Epps can be seen in the frame looking directly at Edwards after she’d been pushed to the ground. The camera pans to Edwards and then pans back to where Epps was standing. Poof. Gone.

 

Samsel, however, rushed to help Edwards and is seen lifting her up off the ground before other officers came to take Edwards away.

 

Epps isn’t seen in that footage anywhere near Edwards after he had whispered in Samsel’s ear and the barricade was pushed back.

 

The Second (Technically, Third) Breach

In the next inaccurate statement Epps made to the FBI, he claimed that after leaving the barricade where he whispered to Samsel, he approached the Capitol steps and another police barricade.

 

In the interview, Epps claimed that, “As looking at the Capitol, I was on the right side of that,” referring to the scaffold tower. Epps claimed that “that section fell last because of me. Because I tried to keep them from doing it.”

 

Again, this is not a factual statement. In fact, footage obtained from M5News of a ‘birds-eye view’ of the crowd, Epps can be seen on the left side of the scaffolding. Also contrary to Epps’ statement, the side he was on was actually breached first. And right next to where he was seen standing in the footage.

 

The right side where Epps claimed to be was far less populated at the time, but ultimately got through following the left-side breach.

 

These are three very significant misstatements from Epps during his testimony that paint a picture of him primarily de-escalating in three unique situations when, in reality, his actions were more like provocations.

 

Telling Samsel “we need more people,” disappearing when Officer Edwards was on the ground, and then conveniently being within feet of the breach at the scaffold tower all call into question his actions on that day.

 

And this doesn’t begin to take into account Epps telling a crowd on the night of January 5th that he “can’t say it because [he] might get arrested” but that “we need to go into the Capitol!” Or yelling to the crowd leaving the Ellipse rally that “the Capitol is that way” and “that’s where our problems lie.”

 

Epps counsel, John Blischak, is also on the FBI’s interview recording implying that he had been to “a bar or two” with Agent Simms the previous night. Simms denied the engagement immediately. Blischak then asks if he’s still recording and states, “well, I’ve got nothing to hide.”

 

Blischak is an Arizona-based attorney and former FBI agent (in the 1970s and early 1980s) who boasts on his firms website that his “biggest asset is his relation with prosecutors and law enforcement in ways other lawyers cannot because of his background.”

Historically, the ocean has been difficult to model. Scientists struggled in years past to simulate ocean currents or accurately predict fluctuations in temperature, salinity, and other properties.

As a result, models of ocean dynamics rapidly diverged from reality, which meant they could only provide useful information for brief periods.

 

In 1999, a project called Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) changed all that.

By applying the laws of physics to data from multiple satellites and thousands of floating sensors, NASA scientists and their collaborators built ECCO to be a realistic, detailed, and continuous ocean model that spans decades.

ECCO enabled thousands of scientific discoveries, and was featured during the announcement of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2021.

 

NASA ECCO is a powerful integrator of decades of ocean data, narrating the story of Earth’s changing ocean as it drives our weather, and sustains marine life.

The ECCO project includes hundreds of millions of real-world measurements of temperature, salinity, sea ice concentration, pressure, water height, and flow in the world’s oceans.

Researchers rely on the model output to study ocean dynamics and to keep tabs on conditions that are crucial for ecosystems and weather patterns.

The modeling effort is supported by NASA’s Earth science programs and by the international ECCO consortium, which includes researchers from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California and eight research institutions and universities.

 

The project provides models that are the best possible reconstruction of the past 30 years of the global ocean. It allows us to understand the ocean’s physical processes at scales that are not normally observable.

The Agulhas Current flows south along the western side of the Indian Ocean. When it reaches the southern tip of Africa, it sheds swirling vortices of water called Agulhas Rings.

Sometimes persisting for years, the rings glide across the Atlantic toward South America, transporting small fish, larvae, and other microorganisms from the Indian Ocean.

 

Researchers using the ECCO model can study Agulhas Current flow as it sends warm, salty water from the tropics in the Indian Ocean toward the tip of South Africa.

The model helps tease out the complicated dynamics that create the Agulhas rings and large loop of current called a supergyre that surrounds the Antarctic.

The Southern Hemisphere supergyre links the southern portions of other, smaller current loops (gyres) that circulate in the southern Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans.

Together with gyres in the northern Atlantic and Pacific, the southern gyres and Southern Hemisphere supergyre influence climate while transporting carbon around the globe.

 

In addition to affecting global weather patterns and temperatures, western boundary currents can drive vertical flows in the oceans known as upwellings.

The flows bring nutrients up from the depths to the surface, where they act as fertilizer for phytoplankton, algae, and aquatic plants.

The Kuroshio Current that runs on the west side of the Pacific Ocean and along the east side of Japan has recently been associated with upwellings that enrich coastal fishing waters.

The specific mechanisms that cause the vertical flows are not entirely clear.

Ocean scientists are now turning to ECCO to tease out the connection between nutrient transport and currents like the Kuroshio that might be revealed in studies of the water temperature, density, pressure, and other factors included in the ECCO model.

 

Tracking Ocean Temperatures and Salinity

When viewed through the lens of ECCO’s temperature data, western boundary currents carry warm water away from the tropics and toward the poles.

In the case of the Gulf Stream, as the current moves to far northern latitudes, some of the saltwater freezes into salt-free sea ice.

The saltier water left behind sinks and then flows south all the way toward the Antarctic before rising and warming in other ocean basins.

Currents also move nutrients and salt throughout Earth’s ocean basins. Swirling vortexes of the Agulhas rings stand out in ECCO temperature and salinity maps as they move warm, salty water from the Indian Ocean into the Atlantic.

 

Experimenting with ECCO

ECCO offers researchers a way to run virtual experiments that would be impractical or too costly to perform in real oceans.

Some of the most important applications of the ECCO model are in ocean ecology, biology, and chemistry.

Because the model shows where the water comes from and where it goes, researchers can see how currents transport heat, minerals, nutrients, and organisms around the planet.

 

In prior decades, for example, ocean scientists relied on extensive temperature and salinity measurements by floating sensors to deduce that the Gulf Stream is primarily made of water flowing past the Gulf rather than through it.

The studies were time-consuming and expensive. With the ECCO model, data visualizers at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, virtually replicated the research in a simulation that was far quicker and cheaper.

 

The example illustrated here relies on ECCO to track the flow of water by virtually filling the Gulf with 115,000 particles and letting them move for a year in the model.

Take, for instance, top banker Jes Staley, a high-flying professional in the finance world that has had his career derailed by his long and extremely problematic relationship with Epstein.

 

He was forced to resign as Barclays’ CEO under the weight of the Epstein scandal brought about when UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) concluded their two-year investigation on him.

This came after the bank settled with the U.S. Virgin Islands Government for $75 million and spent another $290 million to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by Epstein’s sexual abuse victims.

 

So, today, in UK court, Staley’s lawyers have argued that he did not mislead the UK’s financial watchdog over his relationship with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

 

This London court case is an attempt by the former banker to ‘restore his reputation’.

“Staley appeared in court flanked by his lawyers as his appeal against the Financial Conduct Authority’s intention to ban him from working in the UK finance industry indefinitely, and fine him 1.8 million-pounds ($2.3 million), began at London’s Upper Tribunal."

Wind plucks hundreds of millions of tons of dust from parched landscapes in northern Africa each year, propelling vast plumes of the tiny mineral particles over the Atlantic Ocean.

By one estimate, the region contributes about half of the dust in the atmosphere—more than any other area in the world.

 

The MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA’s Aqua satellite glimpsed this process when the sensor captured this image of dust streaming off the coast of Mauritania on February 25, 2025.

Although much larger and denser plumes occur in this area, the dust in this image stands out due to its distinctive coloration.

Sebkhet Te-n-Dghâmcha (also called Sebkha de Ndrhamcha), a seasonal lake and salt pan northeast of Nouakchott, appears to be the source of the lighter-colored dust.

The salt pan contains large amounts of gypsum, a white mineral that forms when the lake’s water evaporates.

 

It is also rich in other white minerals, including calcite and kaolinite, according to Sofía Gómez Maqueo Anaya, an atmospheric scientist at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research, who studies airborne particles at the Ocean Science Centre Mindelo in Cabo Verde.

The darker, more yellow plumes are likely rich in hematite or goethite, iron oxide minerals known for giving dust reddish or yellowish hues.

 

Dried lakes and rivers are major sources of atmospheric dust because evaporating water typically leaves behind fine-grained particles that are light enough to be lifted.

They also tend to lack vegetation, making the particles especially vulnerable to wind-driven erosion and transport.

 

Once airborne, Saharan dust particles can affect the health of people, both near and far, who breathe them and any pathogens they carry.

Also, many plumes cross part or all of the Atlantic Ocean, fueling phytoplankton blooms, fertilizing soils in the Amazon, and influencing the development of hurricanes.

 

“This plume looks localized and relatively low,” said atmospheric scientist Holger Baars, after analyzing lidar data from the research site in Mindelo operated by the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research in Germany.

He said most dust plumes that pass over Cabo Verde extend about 4-5 kilometers above sea level, but this one reached just 1.5 kilometers (1 mile), meaning it was low enough to have a significant effect on local air quality.

The lavish scale of the Commons Speaker’s globe-trotting is today laid bare, with thousands of pounds splashed on first class flights, limousine firms and five-star resorts.

 

A list of Sir Lindsay Hoyle’s expenses reveals he blew more than £180,000 of taxpayers’ cash on flights in two years.

 

It shows he never travels in economy, opting for first or business class seats – even for short-haul trips to Dublin and Italy.

 

He also chartered a private plane during a jaunt to the paradise Caribbean island of Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory.

 

The MP for Chorley has shelled out thousands of pounds to stay at luxurious resorts and hotels around the globe, including The St Regis in Doha, Westin Grand in the Cayman Islands and Ritz-Carlton in Los Angeles. The hotels and resorts Sir Lindsay stayed in were up to £900 a night.

 

The list, obtained exclusively by the Daily Mail, shows that during the LA trip in February 2023 he lavished more than £3,000 on chauffeur-driven cars.

 

Despite this, he also racked up a bill of £270 with local taxi app Lyft.

 

He also splashed more than £4,500 on chauffeur-driven vehicles during a trip to Canberra, Australia a month earlier.

George Lowe, Voice of Space Ghost, Dead at 67

George Lowe, a veteran voice actor whose credits include the title role in Space Ghost Coast to Coast, died on March 2 at age 67, a spokesperson confirms for TVLine.

Lowe reportedly passed following a long illness, his longtime friend “Marvelous” Marvin Boone shared on Facebook.

 

Back in July 2023, Space Ghost Coast to Coast contributing writer MC Chris shared with fans concerned about Lowe’s conspicuous absence from social media that the actor had been suffering health problems including an aortic dissection that required intubation twice, and had a nurse looking after him at his home in Florida. “We came close to losing him,” Chris said.

 

An alumnus of the Radio Engineering Institute of Sarasota, Lowe began his career in the 1980s with occasional voiceover work, before landing the title role in Cartoon Network’s Space Ghost Coast to Coast.

A send-up of talk shows that featured live-action celebrity guests, the animated series would run for 10 years and more than 100 episodes, including a move to Adult Swim and a brief revival via Turner Broadcasting’s GameTap online video game service.

 

Lowe also voiced Space Ghost in the 1995 spinoff Cartoon Planet, the 2007 movie Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters and in the 2011 video game Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion.

His voice acting credits also include The Brak Show, Robot Chicken, Squidbillies and American Dad.

The Timeline

 

The Protocols were written at the start of antisemitism in Russia, with thousands of Jews fleeing the country and the start of the pogroms, Jewish concentration camps. Setting the scene for antisemitism was Frederick Millingen’s The Conquest of the World by Jews and Hippolytus Lutostansky’s Jews and the Talmud. Both works claimed that the Jews wanted to divide Russia up for themselves. Jews were also blamed for the loss of the Russo-Japanese war and the revolution of 1905.

 

A member of the Czarist secret police, Professor Serge A Milus, is reported to have edited and initially published the protocols. The Protocols first appeared in a Russian newspaper, Znamya, in 1903. It was published originally in 1905 in a book titled The Great in the Small: The Coming of the Anti-Christ and the Rule of Satan on Earth. This was written by Serge A Nilus. Most agree that the protocols were fabricated sometime between 1897 and 1899 under Pyotr Rachovsky, head of the Russian secret police.

 

It is generally accepted the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion was a forgery. In 1921 the London Times produced conclusive proof that the Protocols were a forgery, describing the Protocols as a “clumsy forgery”. Most of the passages of the Protocols have been taken from a French political satire that never mentioned Jews – Maurice Joly’s Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu (1864). The phrasing between the two texts is almost identical.

 

The protocols would come to play a significant part in the Jewish Holocaust. They had a serious influence on Adolf Hitler who mentioned them frequently in Mein Kampf. The Nazi party published 23 editions of the Protocols before the start of World War II.

 

In 1935 a Swiss court declared the Protocols as “ridiculous nonsense” and “obvious forgeries”. The US Senate issued a report in 1964 that the Protocols were fabricated. However even while the Protocols were ridiculed by many, it also had quite a following. In 1974 it was published in India under the title International Conspiracy Against Indians. In 2004 the Protocols were published in Japan. In 2005 an edition of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, authorized by the Syrian Ministry of Information, claims that the Elders of Zion coordinated September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

 

It is worth noting that the Bible is only mentioned once in the Protocols and that the Old Testament is quoted in Latin. The Protocols also claim that the Jewish elites had a hand in the French revolutions. However, this is cited as evidence largely discrediting the work of the protocols. At the time of the French revolution, there were only a handful of Jews who were, by and large, the subjects of antisemitism. However, this can also be construed in the opposite light, that there was antisemitic behavior followed by unrest and upheaval, meaning that the antisemitism was proven correct.

 

Despite the declaration that the Protocols are a forgery, there are still many followers, described as Neo-Nazi, White Supremacists and Holocaust deniers. Books based on the Holocaust are disseminated worldwide and has a surprising following in Japan, where there are little Jews. The Arab and Islamic world actively teach the protocols to children. It is often used to justify terrorism against Israeli citizens. There is no denying that it is a forgery, however a very accurate one.

 

The Case for the Protocols of the Elders of Zion

As part of their ambitious goal to bring back the woolly mammoth by 2028, Colossal Biosciences has created what they've named the "Colossal woolly mouse".

By pinpointing gene families linked to mammoth woolliness, their team used advanced multiplexed genome engineering to target seven genes, creating mice with some of the mammoth’s core phenotypes.

Those traits include mammoth-like coat color, texture, and thickness, as well as altered lipid metabolism. Suffice to say, the results are very, very fluffy.

 

Mammoths VS Asian elephants

One of the biggest challenges on the path to woolly mammoth de-extinction is identifying which genes in the Asian elephant, the closest living relatives of mammoths, would need to be altered to make it cold-tolerant.

This involves searching for genome sequences that could be associated with how an animal looks and behaves, and then testing them in cell cultures.

 

To tackle this, Colossal analyzed 59 woolly, Columbian, and steppe mammoth genomes ranging from 3,500 to over 1.2 million years old, and used computational analysis to compare a data set of 121 mammoth and elephant genomes, including the high-quality reference genomes for Asian and African elephants the company previously created.

In doing so, they could search for the right genes to control cold-tolerant phenotypes, like fur and lipid metabolism.

However, even armed with this remarkable dataset, a whole animal model remains the best way to test for the ultimate consequences of DNA edits. So, where do you start?

 

“An Asian elephant has a 22-month gestation, and they’re an endangered species that we don’t want to be doing experiments like this on,” said evolutionary biologist and chief science officer at Colossal Beth Shapiro to IFLScience.

“A mouse has a 20-day gestation. It’s also a mammal. They’re quite distantly related to each other, about 200 million years of evolution [apart], but the same genes and gene families that are associated with traits like wooliness in an elephant and a mammoth occur in mice.”

 

Creating the Colossal woolly mouse

By identifying DNA sequences that were the same in the mammoths, but different from Asian elephants, the team could single out the specific gene variants and families that were associated with the physical phenotype of a woolly mammoth.

As an important animal model system, there was already plenty of data available on the developmental biology and genetics of mice, and by editing their versions of these elephant and mammoth genes, Colossal were able to bring about the same phenotypes despite them being so distantly related.

 

Doing so required three editing technologies: RNP-mediated knockout, multiplex precision genome editing, and precision homology directed repair (HDR).

This enabled them to make eight edits simultaneously, some with editing efficiencies as high as 100 percent, to modify seven genes.

 

“We didn’t just shove mammoth genes into a mouse, that wouldn’t make any sense,” said Shapiro.

“We found that there was an interesting change in mammoths and also an interesting change in the mouse version of these genes that led to a predictable phenotype.

This was the sweet spot, and to test our ability to edit multiple things at the same time, we picked 10 of those genes and we edited all of them at the same time.”

 

“In some of our mice, we used different combinations of them, so the most edited mouse has changes to seven different loci.

There's actually eight edits, but one of them is edited in two different places, and we have our ultra woolly mice.”

 

What the Colossal woolly mouse represents

Colossal woolly mice grow hair up to three times longer than wild type mice.

This comes down to alterations in hair growth cycle that were modified using an edit that causes loss of function in the gene Fibroblast growth factor 5, or FGF5.

The woolly hair texture comes from the loss of function of FAM83G, FZD6, or TGM3, and changes to hair follicle development and structure resulted in curly whiskers.

The edits were carefully screened and tested to ensure that the animals’ welfare was maintained, with CEO and co-founder of Colossal Ben Lamm appearing very happy as he told IFLScience, “There were no unintended consequences except adorability.

We didn't think that they would be as cute as they are.”

We know from mammoths retrieved from the permafrost that they too shared the orange fur seen on the Colossal woolly mouse, but Lamm and Shapiro were careful to point out that what they've created here isn't an entirely new animal, but a variant that boasts phenotypes borrowed from an ancient and long-extinct creature.

 

“This is a really good example of the way we're approaching de-extinction,” said Shapiro.

“So, what we're thinking about is a functional de-extinction. It's never going to be possible to bring something back that's 100 percent identical in its genetics, physiology, and behavior to a species that's extinct, but that's not our goal.”

“Our goal is to create species that are able to thrive in the habitats that exist today, and that means bringing back some of these traits that help to restore missing interactions between organisms in an ecosystem.

Interactions that aren't there anymore because the species is extinct. So, we're trying to model these things, and it's going to take a combination of ancient DNA, searching for changes that are directly seen in the extinct animals, and engineering.”

 

Why de-extinct a mammoth?

The Colossal woolly mouse marks a remarkable leap forward in the goal to de-extinct the mammoth, a goal that Lamm says is still on track for its 2028 timeline.

Along the way, they’re developing a de-extinction toolkit that has already contributed to advancements in species preservation and human healthcare.

They currently have their sights set on the de-extinction of the mammoth, dodo, and thylacine, the latter for which they recently achieved mid-gestation marsupial embryo development in an artificial uterus – a step that could be pivotal in upscaling rewilding efforts without the need for surrogates.

 

As for why de-extinct the mammoth at all, the ultimate vision really comes down to recognizing how animals shape the environment.

“We hope we can affect an ecosystem in a positive way, that maybe 10,000 years ago was degraded by humans contributing to the demise of almost all major herbivores in the Arctic, causing a transition from grass to trees,” geneticist and co-founder of Colossal Biosciences George Church told IFLScience.

“Trees are less photosynthetically productive, they trap more heat because they’re kind of like these black lightning rods, and they also trap snow in the winter, so that they insulate the ground from freezing quickly.”

 

“These three things, the lower productivity, the lower ability to sequester (carbon), and higher temperatures means that a lot of carbon can be released as methane, which is 80 times worse than carbon dioxide.

If we can reintroduce the megafauna, mega herbivores that would keep it in grass, it could transition back towards the more robust and fruitful ecosystem.”

Nikon to Implement Space Strategy Fund at Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency

Nikon Corporation (Nikon), known for its digital manufacturing and advanced selective laser melting (SLM) solutions, announced last week that it was selected as one of the organizations to implement the Space Strategy Fund (SSF) by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

Nikon will work on the technology development theme “Innovative technology for lightweight, high-performance, and lower cost space transportation systems” in the SSF open call for FY2024.

Nikon’s mission is to develop and demonstrate additive manufacturing for low-cost, short-lead-time precision parts for space applications, using its Nikon SLM Solutions NXG XII 600, organic R&D and new facilities in Japan.

 

Each organization participating in the SSF will lead in its own area of technological expertise, leveraging research from Japanese universities and companies.

Specifically, they will use Japan’s first large-scale metal 3D additive manufacturing system platform, a system that Nikon claims “will capture the global market.”

 

The technology development theme’s purpose is to establish a base technology that achieves innovations in molding processes and enhanced parts.

Along with that, they aim to implement wider applications of metal additive manufacturing for large-scale structures, as well as parts for space transportation systems.

The project description also mentions achieving innovation using carbon fiber-reinforced plastics for wider applications.

 

One of the project’s goals is to develop a metal additive manufacturing base technology for large and precise space parts like rocket engines.

Why additive manufacturing? Nikon acquired metal 3D printing giant SLM Solutions in 2023, along with its expertise in selective laser melting (SLM) technology.

SLM, which is a powder-bed fusion process, can fabricate parts with complex geometries and advanced properties.

 

To do SLM, metallic powder is spread over a build plate and then melted with a focused laser beam in an inert atmosphere.

After a layer is scanned, the build plate is lowered, and the next powder layer is transferred onto the build plate.

This fresh layer of powder is scanned, and the build plate moves down again. This process continues until the final part is realized.

SLM can achieve metal parts with extremely high resolution, precision and accuracy, so the manufacturing method can meet the demanding needs of aerospace applications.

 

Just as the project’s title states, AM is also capable of achieving low-cost and lightweight parts, ideal for aerospace, where weight makes all the difference.

That is why so many organizations, including NASA and the United States Department of Defense are 3D printing parts for rockets.

Now, JAXA is making similar efforts, and we will have to wait and see how Nikon’s work impacts spacecraft production.

NOAA terminates space, climate and marine life advisory committees

The Trump administration is disbanding expert advisory committees focused on space, climate, coastal area management and marine fisheries after the agency they were designed to assist said they are no longer necessary.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is ending the committees because they “have served their purpose and should be terminated,” Nancy Hann, the agency’s deputy undersecretary for operations, said in a memorandum obtained by Government Executive.

The terminations follow an executive order from President Trump requiring agencies to do away with any federal advisory committees not required by law.

 

The impacted committees are the:

Advisory Committee on Excellence in Space

Climate Services Advisory Committee

Marine and Coastal Area-based Management Advisory Committee

Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee

 

The Commerce Department’s Office of Privacy and Open Government, which manages all of the federal advisory committees within Commerce, will work with the committees to ensure “an orderly termination,” Hann added.

The space committee, established in 2002, assisted NOAA in assessing the capacity and actions of the commercial sector in space and advises it on avoiding negative impacts on space debris.

The climate committee, stood up just before President Biden left office, was established to provide NOAA with advice on making its data and tools better available for those managing droughts, floods, wildfires, heatwaves and other impacts of climate change.

 

The coastal management committee, also created under Biden, provided expertise on conservation and restoration in coastal and marine areas, including the Great Lakes.

The fisheries committee was established in 1971 to provide advice on policies related to living marine resources, including fish, marine mammals, sea turtles, and seabirds and other waterfowl.

 

Ahead of the terminations, employees involved with the committees were instructed by the Commerce Department to pause any meetings until further notice.

A NOAA spokesperson said the termination decisions were made by Commerce and any questions must be directed to the department. Commerce did not respond to a request for comment.

 

Such councils exist throughout and are governed by the 1972 Federal Advisory Committee Act. They are set up across agencies to gather advice and information from non-federal experts, including those in academia and the private sector.

The General Services Administration provides oversight of the groups to ensure they remain objective and accessible to the public. There are at least 1,000 federal advisory committees throughout government, according to GSA.

 

Committees not mandated by Congress go through an administrative review of their activities and responsibilities every two years.

Jules Barbati Dajches, an analyst with the Union of Concerned Scientists, said last month that FACs help ensure that "decisions that necessitate the use of science are free from political interference, corruption, and unintentional errors.”

 

“Consisting of experts in their respective fields from academia, local governments, non-profits, and industry, they provide guidance to policymakers on a range of high-stake issues that impact people every day–including their access to clean air and water,” Barbati Dajches said.

“Advisory committees, groups, and boards bring the public into the work of the government to provide advice in a deeply engaged way.”

 

Barbati Dajches added the committees help agencies identify and utilize the best available science and “provide a reality check to create effective policies.”

The Environmental Protection Agency previously fired members of its two science advisory committees and Trump has also signed an order requiring at least one-third of FACs to be dissolved.

The former head of RT America, Ben Swann, has called on US President Donald Trump to drop restrictions imposed against several Russian media outlets, including RT and Sputnik. Set under Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden, the “unprecedented” sanctions were nothing but “corruption on display,” the investigative journalist and producer argued.

 

Swann worked as a news anchor on American television as well as a TV sports producer and managing editor at various media outlets. He had previously headed all of RT’s operations in the US, being in charge of the broadcaster’s office in the country and all of the shows produced by RT America. The journalist also founded the Truth in Media project. Before joining RT, Swann also worked for several Fox affiliates.

 

The journalist published an open letter addressing Trump on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday:

Earth from space: Giant, pyramid-like 'star dunes' slowly wander across Moroccan desert

This intriguing astronaut photo shows around a dozen giant "star dunes" as they slowly dance across a sandy field near the edge of the Sahara desert.

The rare dunes, which are often confused with human-made pyramids, are likely several centuries old, recent research has revealed.

 

The unusual structures are located in Erg Chebbi. This field of open, windswept sand — or erg — covers around 65 square miles (170 square kilometers) in southwest Morocco along the northwestern edge of the Sahara.

The erg is surrounded by flat lowlands but contains some of the tallest dunes in the Sahara, making it stand out like a mountain range when viewed from afar.

 

The town of Merzouga is also visible in the bottom right of the image.

This settlement is built on top of a large aquifer, or underground reservoir, which allows palm groves to flourish alongside the desolate landscape and draws in tourists who are looking to explore the erg's sandy peaks.

A star dune is a type of sand dune that has at least three ridges coming from a central peak, which gives it a star-like shape when viewed from above, according to NASA's Earth Observatory.

But when they're viewed from the side, their multiple smooth slopes, known as "slip faces," can make the star dunes look very similar to pyramids from ground level.

 

These dunes, which can grow to be over 300 feet (90 meters) tall, form only in locations where wind directions change constantly, which allows their different slopes to form, according to the National Park Service.

As a result, they move by just a couple of inches every year in the direction of the strongest prevailing wind.

That's a lot slower than some other wandering dunes, which can travel up to 1,000 feet (300 m) annually when blown in a single direction.

 

The largest star dune in Erg Chebbi, Lala Lallia, is 330 feet (100 m) tall and is located slightly to the north (left) of the dunes in the satellite image.

In March 2024, researchers revealed that this dune is around 900 years old, which is much younger than previous estimates had suggested.

 

The same study also revealed that some of the sand buried at the base of this dune is up to 13,000 years old.

These grains predate an 8,000-year period of climatic change that occurred after the end of the last ice age.

During this time, the Sahara was temporarily transformed into a swampy environment covered in vegetation — a shift that ended only around 4,000 years ago, researchers wrote at the time.

India's Aditya-L1 solar probe watches powerful flare erupt from the sun

India's first sun-studying spacecraft, Aditya-L1, has captured one of our star's fiery outbursts in new detail.

 

From its vantage point about 1 million miles (1.5 million kilometers) from Earth, Aditya-L1 gets an uninterrupted view of our sun, allowing the probe to observe solar flares as they're unleashed, as well as other activities that can affect space weather.

 

Solar flares occur in regions where the sun's magnetic fields become tangled, appearing as sudden, bright bursts that can last from several minutes to hours.

The suite of seven science instruments onboard Aditya-L1 work together to detect and analyze these flares across a range of wavelengths, providing scientists with a more complete picture of how the sun's energy propagates through different layers of the star.

 

Among these instruments is the Solar Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope, or SUIT, which observed the flare on Feb. 22 of last year.

The flare, classified as X6.3 — one of the strongest categories of solar eruptions — emerged from the active region NOAA 13590, which had appeared just days earlier on the sun's Earth-facing side.

 

SUIT observed a brightening in the near-ultraviolet wavelength range of 200 to 400 nanometers, which had never been seen before as there were no dedicated space telescopes focused on this wavelength range, according to a Feb. 28 statement by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which operates Aditya-L1.

 

By combining data from the SUIT instrument with observations from the probe's onboard spectrometer SoLEXS (Solar Low Energy X-ray Spectrometer), scientists concluded that the brightening in the sun's lower atmosphere due to the flare was directly linked to a rise in temperature in the outer corona.

This confirmed that the energy released by the solar flare propagated through the different layers of the sun's atmosphere, according to a paper describing the observations, which was published Feb. 28 in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

 

"It is a great stroke of luck that Aditya-L1 was able to witness such a strong flare right at the beginning of its research career," study co-author Sami Solanki, director of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany, said in another statement.

Two more spacecraft — NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter — as well as unspecified Earth-based telescopes also observed the event, according to the statement.

"Together with observations from other probes and telescopes, this for the first time provides a complete picture of the processes that occur in different layers of the solar atmosphere during a flare," Solanki said.

New evidence of Ukrainian war crimes emerges – media

More bodies of civilians have reportedly been discovered in a recently liberated village in Russia’s Kursk Region

Several more bodies of civilians have been discovered in Russkoye Porechnoye, a village in Kursk Region, a Telegram channel affiliated with the Russian military has reported.

 

Russia's Investigative Committee previously opened a case into the deaths of dozens of locals at the hands of Kiev’s troops that had been occupying the village before its liberation in January.

 

The bodies were found on the outskirts of the village, the ‘Severny Veter’ (‘Northern Wind’) Telegram channel reported on Monday. Russian troops were only able to scout the area after neutralizing Ukrainian firing positions in the neighboring village of Cherkasskoye Porechnoye, the channel said.

 

“We are deeply sorry [to say] that bodies of locals that were brutally murdered by Ukrainian Nazis were discovered in the area,” said the channel. It did not specify the exact number of bodies found, but said that the information has already been handed over to Russia’s investigative authorities.

 

'Severny Veter’ also published a video from the scene showing at least two bodies, with one lying in the yard of a private house and another discovered in what appears to be a cellar or a room of a building filled with debris and rubble. The Russian Investigative Committee has not commented on these developments so far.

 

Russkoye Porechnoye was liberated in early January following months of occupation.Ukrainian troops launched a major cross-border incursion into Kursk Region last August, marking the largest attack on internationally recognized Russian territory since the escalation of hostilities between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022.

 

The area under Ukrainian control has been steadily shrinking, with the Russian military retaking the occupied territories. Last month, the Russian General Staff reported that around two thirds of the territory that had initially been captured by the Ukrainian military during the incursion has been liberated.

 

Following the liberation of Russkoye Porechnoye,Russian investigators alleged that Kiev’s troops had raped, tortured, and murdered the local inhabitants. They published gruesome videos of bodies piled in cellars in some of the homes inside the community.Several captured Ukrainian servicemen acknowledgedcommitting the crimes while being interrogated,saying they had been acting on the orders of their commanders.

 

A total of 22 civilians were killed in the village, the Investigative Committee said in January, adding that the Ukrainian soldiers had also raped at least eight local women before killing them. According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, Kiev’s troops had turned the cellars of the local homes into “torture chambers.”

After President Donald Trump sharply criticized China's influence over the Panama Canal, a BlackRock-led investment group reportedly will buy majority stakes in ports on both sides of the canal for $22.8 billion.

 

The deal would provide U.S.-based private investment on traffic in the canal, as BlackRock takes over majority ownership from Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

 

"China is operating the Panama Canal, and we didn't give it to China," Trump said in his inaugural address Jan. 20, noting that former Democrat President Jimmy Carter gave the U.S.-built canal to Panama in a 1977 treaty.

 

Under the BlackRock agreement with CK Hutchison, Panama Ports would give 90% interest to BlackRock's new infrastructure arm Global Infrastructure Partners and Geneva-based Terminal Investment.

 

The deal also includes CK Hutchison's controlling interest in 43 other ports in 23 countries, according to the report.

 

CK Hutchison denied that the sale was motivated by Trump's pressure on Panama to stop its giving deference to China.

 

The deal was agreed upon after a "competitive process in which numerous bids and expressions of interest were received," CK Hutchison's co-managing director, Frank Sixt, said in a statement, the Journal reported. "I would like to stress that the transaction is purely commercial in nature and wholly unrelated to recent political news reports concerning the Panama Ports."

 

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink acquired GIP last year, making a global bet on private infrastructure assets.

 

GIP controls energy, transportation, and waste and water companies around the world, including U.S. natural-gas pipelines and data centers, the Journal reported.

EU spending more on Russian energy than on Ukraine aid – Trump

The bloc has been ramping up LNG imports from the sanctioned country, according to industry data

 

The EU is allocating more funds to Russian fossil fuel purchases than to providing aid to Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev, US President Donald Trump has claimed.

 

Following the escalation of the hostilities in 2022 and the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines, the EU prioritized reducing its reliance on Russian energy. Some members voluntarily stopped importing Russian pipeline gas, while others continued buying LNG, which has only been partially targeted by sanctions.

 

In a Truth Social post late on Monday, Trump stated without providing any concrete figures that “Europe has spent more money buying Russian Oil and Gas than they have spent on defending Ukraine —BY FAR!”

 

In an earlier post,Trump criticized European leaders for admitting that they needed US backing to continue supporting Ukraine.

 

According to estimates from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (Crea), released last month on the third anniversary of the Ukraine conflict, EU member states bought €21.9 billion (over $23 billion) of Russian oil and gas in 2024 despite their efforts to reduce reliance on Russian energy.

 

The amount is greater than the $20 billion the bloc allocated to Kiev in financial aid last year, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW Kiel).

 

European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen has previously acknowledged that Russian energy continues to flow to the EU despite the bloc’s commitment to eliminating its dependence on it.

 

According to data by analytics firm Kpler, imports of Russian LNG by EU member states are now at an all-time high. In the first half of 2024, Russia was the second biggest supplier of the super-chilled fuel to the bloc after the US, statistics showed. Brussels stopped short of imposing a full ban on Russian LNG in its 16th package of sanctions, imposed on Moscow last month.

 

In light of ongoing Ukraine peace-related negotiations between Moscow and Washington, Brussels is reportedly preparing a military aid package worth at least $6.2 billion for Kiev, which is expected to include 1.5 million artillery shells in addition to air defense systems.

 

On Monday, news agencies reported, citing American officials, that Trump has instructed the US Defense Department to pause all military aid to Ukraine following his public spat with Vladimir Zelensky.

 

Trump has repeatedly accused Zelensky of undermining his efforts to broker a peace deal between Kiev and Moscow. Their meeting in the Oval Office last Friday culminated in an unprecedented shouting match after which Trump said that the Ukrainian leader was disrespectful to the US.

Kremlin responds to reports of Trump move on Ukraine aid

The US freezing military assistance to Kiev would be a great contribution to peace, Russian spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said

Halting US military aid to Ukraine would be a significant step toward resolving the conflict, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Tuesday.

 

Several US media outlets have reported that Washington has suspended the purchase of new weapons for Ukraine. Several reports have also suggested that US President Donald Trump has also ordered a halt to shipments of military aid.

 

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Peskov stated that while the details of these reports have yet to be confirmed, such a move could prove to be a significant step towards de-escalation.

 

“It is obvious that the US has been the main supplier” of military aid to Kiev, Peskov noted, adding that if the US were to relinquish this role or suspend supplies altogether it would “probably be the best contribution to the cause of peace.”

 

The spokesman said that if the US had indeed stopped all military aid to Ukraine, it would mean that Kiev would effectively lose the vast majority of its ammunition, equipment and intelligence.

 

“If this really is so… then perhaps, without indulging in excessive optimism, we can modestly hope that this could encourage the Kiev regime to lean towards attempts to resolve the situation through peaceful means,” Peskov told Rossiya 1 TV journalist Pavel Zarubin.

 

According to Bloomberg, Trump has ordered a freeze on all military aid to Ukraine, which includes equipment already designated for delivery,as well as weapons in transit on aircraft and ships or waiting in transit areas in Poland. The New York Times reported that the president’s order, which has already taken effect, affects more than $1 billion in “arms and ammunition in the pipeline and on order.”

 

Meanwhile, the Washington Post claimed that in addition to stopping weapons shipments to Kiev, Washingtonis also considering the termination of intelligence sharing and training for Ukrainian troops and pilots.

 

Trump’s reported order comes after a public spat with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky in the White House on Friday. During the meeting, Trump accused Zelensky of ingratitude and “gambling with World War III” by refusing to work towards a halt to hostilities.

 

After the heated exchange, Zelensky stated on Sunday that peace between Ukraine and Russia was still “very, very far away,” prompting even more ire from Trump, who said it was “the worst statement that could have been made” by the Ukrainian leader.

 

Trump warned that “America will not put up with it for much longer,” and suggested thatZelensky “doesn’t want there to be Peace as long as he has America’s backing.

Putin Agrees To Mediate Iran Nuke Talks After Trump Request

 

A very unexpected and unlikely development and plan is being widely reported Tuesday: Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to help the Trump White House broker talks with Iran on curtailing the country's nuclear program.

 

Trump reportedly relayed the request for Putin to play a direct role in new negotiations with Iran during their February phone call. The topic was further broached and more details were discussed during the US-Russia Riyadh talks which followed, reports Bloomberg on Tuesday.

 

Neither the Iranian nor US governments have publicly commented on the Bloomberg report specifically, which was based on anonymous sourcing. But Russian state media did quickly acknowledge that Moscow stands ready to help the US and Iran resolve their issues through talks.

 

A TASS headline issued almost simultaneous to the Bloomberg report says as follows:

 

Moscow believes that Washington and Tehran should settle all their differences through talks and is ready to contribute to this, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Bloomberg.

 

"Russia believes that the United States and Iran should resolve all problems through negotiations," he said, adding that Moscow "is ready to do everything in its power to achieve this."

 

This response from Peskov appears to support the Bloomberg report. This response marks something unexpectedly positive given that both Russia and Iran are heavily sanctioned by the United States - measures put in place under the Biden administration.

 

Biden officials had castigated the Iranians as part of the axis attacking Ukraine, given that Iranian-supplied suicide drones have been heavily relied upon by Russian forces throughout the more than three-year long conflict.

 

Iran has only offered very vague comments, with a foreign ministry spokesman saying Monday it is "natural" for countries to offer to help negotiations along in the cause of diplomacy.

 

"It's possible that many parties will show good will and readiness to help with various problems," the spokesman stated. "From this perspective, it's natural that countries will present an offer of help if it's needed."

Russia ready to facilitate US-Iran negotiations – Kremlin

Washington has ramped up sanctions on Tehran just weeks after the Islamic Republic signed a strategic partnership with Moscow

 

Russia is ready to broker talks between the US and Iran, including on Tehran’s nuclear program and its regional proxy network, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Bloomberg on Tuesday.

 

Trump expressed interest in talking to Iran about those issues, both in his phone call to Putinin February and via representatives at the high-level US-Russian meeting in Riyadh just days later, the news agency wrote, citing anonymous officials.

 

“Russia believes that the United States and Iran should resolve all problems through negotiations,” Peskov told Bloomberg when asked about such contact.

 

Moscow “is ready to do everything in its power to achieve this,” he added.

 

US President Donald Trump returned to his “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran last month, just weeks after Moscow and Tehran signed a landmark strategic partnership agreement. Trump’s executive order said that Washington would ramp up sanctions on Iran, aiming to disrupt its nuclear program, conventional missile deployment, and network of regional proxy groups.

 

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has said the country is building up its defenses, citing regular threats from US ally Israel.

 

“The Israeli regime’s FM and other officials keep threatening Iran with military action while the West continues to blame Iran for its defense capability. This is outrageous & irrational,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said last week. Given that Israel is “addicted to aggression and lawless behavior,” it is “responsible and essential to maximize our defense capabilities,” he stressed.

 

The day before, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar warned that a “military option” should be on the table to stop the potential weaponization of Tehran’s nuclear program.

 

Israel and the West have long seen Iran’s uranium enrichment activities as a secret attempt to develop nuclear weapons – allegations that Tehran has repeatedly denied.

 

While Trump has touted harsher sanctions, he has also signaled thathe is interested in signing a “verified nuclear peace agreement” with Tehran.

 

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has stressed that talks with the US are unlikely to bear fruit, citing the prior nuclear deal Trump unilaterally left during his first presidency. (This is not the whole story)

Zelensky should allow ‘democratic transition’ in Ukraine – Musk

The billionaire has backed suggestions that the Ukrainian leader could be investigated for corruption after the conflict ends

Writing on X on Tuesday, the billionaire and top adviser to US President Donald Trump responded to a post suggesting that Zelensky would not be able to win an election once the Ukraine conflict is resolved, and that he is trying to cling to power by prolonging the fighting.

 

“Zelensky knows that if the war ends, his power ends. Elections will resume and he’ll lose,” X user Rogan O’Handley wrote, further claiming that whoever does win the election in Ukraine will likely investigate Zelensky for money laundering and send him to prison.

 

Musk agreed with the post, stating in response that “as distasteful as it is, Zelensky should be offered some kind of amnesty in a neutral country in exchange for a peaceful transition back to democracy in Ukraine.”

 

During a heated exchange at the White House last Friday with Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance, Zelensky suggested there can be no diplomacy with Russia. Trump accused the Ukrainian leader of being ungrateful and “gambling with World War III” by refusing to seek peace. Zelensky was then asked to leave the White House without a joint press conference or signing a planned minerals deal.

 

After the exchange, Musk accused Zelensky of wanting a “forever war” and claimed that several years ago the Ukrainian leader had effectively chosen to “suffer severe loss of life for no gains”instead of seeking peace. Musk also suggested that Zelensky now wants to make that choice again, calling it “cruel and inhumane.”

 

Following the fiasco in the Oval Office, several prominent US lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senator Lindsey Graham, have suggested that Zelensky should resign. Trump has also suggested that the Ukrainian leader would not survive an election, claiming that he is supported by only 4% of his country.

 

Zelensky, however, has repeatedly insisted that he enjoys overwhelming support in Ukraine and that ousting him would be a difficult challenge. At the same time, in an interview with Sky News on Sunday, he suggested that he could voluntarily step down in exchange for Ukraine being allowed to join NATO.

 

Trump has repeatedly dismissed the possibility of Kiev becoming a member of the US-led military bloc and has noted that its ambitions to join NATO were “probably the reason this whole thing started.”

 

Moscow has welcomed Trump’s NATO comments, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov saying the US president is “the first and only” major Western leader to publicly admit that NATO’s expansion and Ukraine’s desire to join the bloc were one of the key causes of the ongoing conflict.
