I was told who was behind these fires in South Carolina. I will further verify this as more info comes in.

 

The two contractors identified as ex-Army Ranger Kyle Voss, 36, and former DEA agent-turned-mercenary Javier Ortiz, 41 were hired via a dark web platform (ShadowHub, job ID: SC-9274, paid 8 Bitcoin, ~$480,000 USD).

 

Their handler, “Redline,” operates out of a VPN-masked server in Raleigh, NC, and reports to Coastal Growth’s Hargrove. It was said Javier Ortiz was apart of another case in 2023 involving fentanyl trafficking.

 

The DEA investigated that case. Let's see how this unfolds.

NEW YORK — Kroger Chairman and CEO Rodney McMullen has resigned after an internal investigation into his personal conduct.

 

Kroger, the nation's largest grocery chain, said Monday that the investigation into McMullen's personal conduct was unrelated to the business, but was found to be inconsistent with its business ethics policy.

 

Board member Ronald Sargent will serve as chairman and interim CEO, effective immediately.

 

Sargent has been on Kroger's board since 2006 and has served as the lead director of the company since 2017. He's worked in several roles at the grocery chain across stores, sales, marketing, manufacturing and strategy. Sargent is also the former Chairman and CEO of Staples.

 

McMullen, 64, began his career with Kroger in 1978 as a part-time stock clerk and bagger at a store in Lexington, Kentucky. He worked his way up through the company, becoming chief financial officer in 1995 and chief operating officer in 2009. McMullen was named Kroger's CEO in 2014 and became the company's chairman the following year.

The latest update follows a Sunday evening statement that indicated the Pope's condition has remained stable.

 

The Press Office gave further details, noting that the Pope has not required "non-invasive mechanical ventilation," as he had used in recent days, but was still receiving supplemental, high-flow oxygenation.

 

It noted, too, that the Holy Father continues to be afebrile; that is, he does not have a fever.

Consistent with the complexity of the Pope's clinical condition, the prognosis remains guarded.

 

On Sunday, Pope Francis participated in Holy Mass with those who have been caring for him during his hospitalization. He spent the rest of the day alternating between rest and prayer.

 

No direct consequences from the bronchospasm the Pope experienced on Friday are evident; however, there is still a possibility the Holy Father's condition could deteriorate.

Before Aska’s 2014 trial began, he agreed to plead guilty in return for a 40 year prison sentence. Aska, who served a mere eight years out of 40 years for this serious crime, was just released on parole on January 30, 2025. He is now accused of raping a 15-year old girl in a stairwell just 30 days after being set free.

The Pentagon has ordered a halt to offensive cyber operations against Russia, multiple media outlets reported on Monday, citing a senior US official. The decision was reportedly made prior to the heated exchange between Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky and President Donald Trump in the Oval Office last Friday.

 

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued the order to US Cyber Command to cease activities in late February while Washington reassesses its relationship with Moscow, according to unnamed officials.

 

The Record, a cybersecurity-focused news outlet, was the first to report the development on Friday. It highlighted that the directive does not apply to signal intelligence collection conducted by the National Security Agency, which operates under the Department of Defense.

 

While details of the rollback remain unspecified, sources claimed it was indefinite. Blue Ghost on the Moon

 

There's a new lander on the Moon. Yesterday Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost executed the first-ever successful commercial lunar landing. During its planned 60-day mission, Blue Ghost will deploy several NASA-commissioned scientific instruments, including PlanetVac which captures lunar dust after creating a small whirlwind of gas. Blue Ghost will also host the telescope LEXI that captures X-ray images of the Earth's magnetosphere. LEXI data should enable a better understanding of how Earth's magnetic field protects the Earth from the Sun's wind and flares. Pictured, the shadow of the Blue Ghost lander is visible on the cratered lunar surface, while the glowing orb of the planet Earth hovers just over the horizon. Goals for future robotic Blue Ghost landers include supporting lunar astronauts in NASA's Artemis program, with Artemis III currently scheduled to land humans back on the Moon in 2027.

A parolee just released after eight years in prison for sexually assaulting a young boy and throwing him off a rooftop, is now accused of raping a 15-year-old girl in a Bronx stairwell, cops and sources said.

Casmine Aska, 29, allegedly pounced on the teen in an elevator at 140 Bellamy Loop in Co-Op City Thursday, forcing her into a stairwell and raping her, cops said. He was arrested Friday night and charged with first-degree rape, police said.

Aska had only been out on parole since Jan. 30 after being convicted of attempted murder when he pushed a 9-year-old boy — that he had sexually assaulted — off the roof of a five-story Bronx apartment building on Feb. 1, 2013, police sources said.

He was locked up in 2017 and served eight years in state prison, state prison records show.

Aska threw the child off the 1545 Nelson Ave. rooftop in Morris Heights after the victim threatened to report the sexual abuse, the sources said.

The fall left the boy in a coma. He briefly regained consciousness and told cops how his neighbor, Aska — 17 at the time — showed up at his third-floor home and dragged him to the roof.

“I’m praying to God that he gets better,” the boy’s heartbroken grandfather, 78, told The Post in Spanish at the time. “He had leg surgery, and at the same time, he was operated on his arm.”

The boy was placed on life support at the hospital but eventually survived.

His grandmother, then 72, said she was home during the incident, but thought the boy had gone to the corner store to get a soda for his mother.

The family didn’t realize what happened until a frantic neighbor yelled that the boy “is downstairs!”

By the time his mother rushed outside, the child was already being loaded into an ambulance.

Along with the second-degree attempted murder conviction, Aska was also charged with a criminal sex act, sex abuse, sexual misconduct and acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17 for the 2013 crime, the sources said.

He has also been arrested multiple times previously for resisting arrest, menacing and assault among other charges, the sources said.

He may have used aliases in past crimes, the sources added.

US President Donald Trump will set out his governing vision Tuesday to a country roiled by his moves to dramatically reshape the federal government and redefine foreign policy as he delivers his first address to Congress since returning to office.

His speech at the US Capitol — scheduled for 9:00 pm (0200 GMT Wednesday) — comes just six weeks after his inauguration and four years since his supporters stormed the building following his 2020 election defeat.

“TOMORROW NIGHT WILL BE BIG. I WILL TELL IT LIKE IT IS!” he promised on Truth Social on Monday.

The Republican president is expected to tout the bevy of executive orders issued during his first 43 days in office, and outline the remaining 1,419 days.

Trump, together with his billionaire advisor Elon Musk, have already shown their intent to push hard and fast to implement the president’s “Make America Great Again” agenda — even if it means testing the constitutional limits of his authority, or straining ties with allies.

Since his inauguration, Trump has moved to unilaterally dismantle federal agencies, fired thousands of government workers and begun holding undocumented migrants at the US military base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

He has also publicly mused about annexing Canada, using economic force if necessary, and claimed the European Union was created to “screw” the United States.

Trump’s extraordinary public clash with President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office on Friday, in which he berated his Ukrainian counterpart, was just the latest example of a US paradigm shift.

Only a few members of his Republican Party, which narrowly controls both chambers of Congress, have publicly pushed back against the president.

Legal attempts to thwart Trump and Musk’s government overhaul efforts continue to work their way through the courts, with the conservative-dominated Supreme Court expected to weigh in on several major questions.

Members of the nine-member high court, three of whom were appointed by Trump during his first term, may attend his speech Tuesday, per custom.

House Speaker Mike Johnson — a staunch Trump ally — touted what he said would be the president’s “triumphant return” to Congress, arguing that he had accomplished so much already that listing his achievements “could fill three hours.”

“Normally, at this point in a new president’s term, they would not deliver a State of the Union. It would be just simply a joint address, as it’s entitled,” Johnson told Fox News.

“But in this case, it actually will be more like a State of the Union address, because President Trump has such a long series of victories.”

Trump’s tight grip on the Republican Party has only grown stronger since his 2024 comeback, and few are willing to risk losing their seat by antagonizing him and his base.

But with narrow majorities in Congress and several competing factions, the party could struggle to push through his legislative agenda, including major tax cuts.

Democrats, meanwhile, are struggling to organize a united front capable of combating Trump’s media and political onslaught.

 

Michigan’s new senator, Elissa Slotkin, will provide the traditional opposition rebuttal to the president’s address.

 

The 48-year-old former CIA analyst, described by Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as a “rising star” in the party, said in a statement that she looked forward to “speaking directly to the American people.”

 

Lawmakers traditionally bring guests to presidential addresses and Democrats announced a list aimed at highlighting the Trump-Musk cuts, from fired federal workers to a child who was saved by a now-scuttled health program.

Georgia Mayor, a BLM Activist, Is Accused of Unauthorized Spending and Attempted Burglary

 

Georgia: South Fulton Mayor Khalid Kamau, a Black Lives Matter organizer, is accused of spending over $26,000 on international travel, including three trips to Colombia, two trips to Paris, and also visited Rwanda, Ghana and Toronto, without authorization. Khalid Kamau says he took the trips trying to get businesses interested in the city of South Fulton. Kamau accused the City Council of racism, although they are all black; South Fulton is is 92% African American. He has also accused them of corruption.

The city council has stripped him of his power, denied access to mayoral budget, revoked his government electric vehicle, and banned him from city buildings, however, he has regained access to his office.

 

Kamau was arrested in July 2023 after a homeowner called police before 7 in the morning about a trespasser at his lake home. The victim, who held Kamau at gunpoint, said that while he was on the phone with police, Kamau yelled at him several times, snarling, “Do you know who the f–k I am? I’m the mayor, and I’ll wait for my police to get here and see what happens then.” According to Fox News, this case is still open. Kamau is also accused of conduct unbecoming of a public official.

Trump scrambles to build deportation apparatus as Congress moves to fund it

 

President Donald Trump and his cabinet are racing to get mass deportations going, and are actively working to build the infrastructure and logistics networks to move tens of millions people while Congress prepares to provide more resources.

 

Early arrest figures from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) initially showed the agency on track to arrest roughly one million people by the end of Trump’s next four years. Trump has vowed to remove as many as twenty times that figure, but his administration’s current pace has slowed as the arrest volume has overwhelmed existing infrastructure.

 

Ramping up arrests, detention capacity, outbound flights, and logistics is certain to prove a costly undertaking and Trump has previously indicated “there is no price tag” for the effort. Despite the rhetoric, Congress will certainly need to approve some dollar amount and that process will prove complicated in the narrow divided chambers. In the meantime, Trump’s senior officials are doing all they can to speed up operations.

Trump Eyes Halting Military Aid to Ukraine

President Donald Trump on Monday plans to discuss suspending or canceling U.S. military aid to Ukraine, it is reported.

 

The New York Times report comes three days after Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was told to leave the White House following a fiery exchange with Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance in the Oval Office.

 

Trump and Vance called Zelenskyy disrespectful during their White House meeting Friday over bringing an end to the Russia-Ukraine war. Before the fallout, the Ukrainian president had been expected to sign a minerals deal with the U.S.

 

Later that day, The Washington Post reported the Trump administration was considering ending all ongoing shipments of military aid to Ukraine. At stake is roughly $5.5 billion of radars, vehicles, ammunition, and missiles that are currently awaiting shipment.

 

Zelenskyy left Washington for London, where he took part in a summit of European leaders during the weekend.

 

Great Britain and France have committed to assembling a "coalition of the willing" to secure a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, the Times reported, but it remained unclear whether that will satisfy Trump.

 

A source told the outlet that Trump is expected to meet with top aides to discuss suspending or canceling U.S. military aid to Ukraine.

 

Newsmax reached out to the White House for comment on the report of Trump's expected meeting.

 

Great Britain's ambassador to the U.S, Peter Mandelson, drew protests at home Monday after he told ABC News that Zelenskyy needed to give "his unequivocal backing to the initiative that President Trump is taking to end the war and to bring a just and lasting peace to Ukraine."

NASA Names Norman Knight as Acting Deputy Director of Johnson Space Center

NASA has selected Norman Knight as acting deputy director of Johnson Space Center.

Knight currently serves as Director of Johnson’s Flight Operations Directorate (FOD), responsible for astronaut training and for overall planning, directing, managing, and implementing overall mission operations for NASA human spaceflight programs.

This also includes management for all Johnson aircraft operations and aircrew training. Knight will serve in this dual deputy director and FOD director role for the near term.

 

“It is an honor to accept my new role as acting deputy director for Johnson,” Knight said. “Human spaceflight is key to our agency’s mission and our Johnson team is unified in that goal.

The successes we see every day are the evidence of that. It never ceases to amaze me what our team is capable of.”

 

Knight began his career at the Johnson Space Center as a Space Shuttle mechanical systems flight controller, working 40 missions in this capacity.

He progressed through management roles with increasing responsibility, and in 2000, he was selected as a flight director and worked in that capacity for numerous International Space Station expeditions and Space Shuttle missions.

In 2009, he became the deputy chief of the Flight Director Office and participated in a NASA fellowship at Harvard Business School in general management.

In 2012, Knight was selected as the chief of the Flight Director Office and then in 2018 as deputy director of the Flight Operations Directorate after serving a temporary assignment as the assistant administrator, Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters.

In 2021, Knight was selected as the director of FOD.

 

“Norm has an accomplished career within the agency,” said Steven Koerner, Johnson acting director. “His leadership, expertise, and dedication to the mission will undoubtably drive our continued success.”

Throughout his career, Knight has been recognized for outstanding technical achievements and leadership, receiving a Spaceflight Awareness Honoree award for STS-82.

He also received several center and agency awards, including two Exceptional Achievement medals, multiple Johnson and agency group achievement awards, two Superior Accomplishment awards, an Outstanding Leadership medal, the Johnson Director’s Commendation award, and the Distinguished Service medal.

 

Knight earned a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in 1990.

You will never convince me that Ukraine deserved billions while American citizens in Western North Carolina had to beg each other for help.

 

Unless you lived through that experience… unless you personally dropped off an RV at the doorstep of American mountain momma and her kids who lost everything, like I did…

NASA’s Webb Exposes Complex Atmosphere of Starless Super-Jupiter

An international team of researchers has discovered that previously observed variations in brightness of a free-floating planetary-mass object known as SIMP 0136 must be the result of a complex combination of atmospheric factors, and cannot be explained by clouds alone.

Using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to monitor a broad spectrum of infrared light emitted over two full rotation periods by SIMP 0136, the team was able to detect variations in cloud layers, temperature, and carbon chemistry that were previously hidden from view.

 

The results provide crucial insight into the three-dimensional complexity of gas giant atmospheres within and beyond our solar system.

Detailed characterization of objects like these is essential preparation for direct imaging of exoplanets, planets outside our solar system, with NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which is scheduled to begin operations in 2027.

 

Rapidly Rotating, Free-Floating

SIMP 0136 is a rapidly rotating, free-floating object roughly 13 times the mass of Jupiter, located in the Milky Way just 20 light-years from Earth.

Although it is not classified as a gas giant exoplanet — it doesn’t orbit a star and may instead be a brown dwarf — SIMP 0136 is an ideal target for exo-meteorology: It is the brightest object of its kind in the northern sky.

Because it is isolated, it can be observed with no fear of light contamination or variability caused by a host star. And its short rotation period of just 2.4 hours makes it possible to survey very efficiently.

 

Prior to the Webb observations, SIMP 0136 had been studied extensively using ground-based observatories and NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes.

“We already knew that it varies in brightness, and we were confident that there are patchy cloud layers that rotate in and out of view and evolve over time,” explained Allison McCarthy, doctoral student at Boston University and lead author on a study published today in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

“We also thought there could be temperature variations, chemical reactions, and possibly some effects of auroral activity affecting the brightness, but we weren’t sure.”

To figure it out, the team needed Webb’s ability to measure very precise changes in brightness over a broad range of wavelengths.

Charting Thousands of Infrared Rainbows

Using NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph), Webb captured thousands of individual 0.6- to 5.3-micron spectra — one every 1.8 seconds over more than three hours as the object completed one full rotation.

This was immediately followed by an observation with MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument), which collected hundreds of spectroscopic measurements of 5- to 14-micron light — one every 19.2 seconds, over another rotation.

 

The result was hundreds of detailed light curves, each showing the change in brightness of a very precise wavelength (color) as different sides of the object rotated into view.

“To see the full spectrum of this object change over the course of minutes was incredible,” said principal investigator Johanna Vos, from Trinity College Dublin.

“Until now, we only had a little slice of the near-infrared spectrum from Hubble, and a few brightness measurements from Spitzer.”

The team noticed almost immediately that there were several distinct light-curve shapes.

At any given time, some wavelengths were growing brighter, while others were becoming dimmer or not changing much at all. A number of different factors must be affecting the brightness variations.

“Imagine watching Earth from far away.

If you were to look at each color separately, you would see different patterns that tell you something about its surface and atmosphere, even if you couldn’t make out the individual features,” explained co-author Philip Muirhead, also from Boston University.

“Blue would increase as oceans rotate into view. Changes in brown and green would tell you something about soil and vegetation.”

Patchy Clouds, Hot Spots, and Carbon Chemistry

To figure out what could be causing the variability on SIMP 0136, the team used atmospheric models to show where in the atmosphere each wavelength of light was originating.

“Different wavelengths provide information about different depths in the atmosphere,” explained McCarthy.

“We started to realize that the wavelengths that had the most similar light-curve shapes also probed the same depths, which reinforced this idea that they must be caused by the same mechanism.”

 

One group of wavelengths, for example, originates deep in the atmosphere where there could be patchy clouds made of iron particles.

A second group comes from higher clouds thought to be made of tiny grains of silicate minerals. The variations in both of these light curves are related to patchiness of the cloud layers.

 

A third group of wavelengths originates at very high altitude, far above the clouds, and seems to track temperature.

Bright “hot spots” could be related to auroras that were previously detected at radio wavelengths, or to upwelling of hot gas from deeper in the atmosphere.

Some of the light curves cannot be explained by either clouds or temperature, but instead show variations related to atmospheric carbon chemistry.

There could be pockets of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide rotating in and out of view, or chemical reactions causing the atmosphere to change over time.

 

“We haven’t really figured out the chemistry part of the puzzle yet,” said Vos.

“But these results are really exciting because they are showing us that the abundances of molecules like methane and carbon dioxide could change from place to place and over time.

If we are looking at an exoplanet and can get only one measurement, we need to consider that it might not be representative of the entire planet.”

National capitals fear European CommissionPresident Ursula von der Leyen will exploit this crisis to extend Brussels' powers to new areas and strengthen her influence vis-à-vis national governments.

EU leaders don't want this to happen again on a sensitive issue like defense spending.

 

“Defense is still very much also a national responsibility,” said a senior EU diplomat last week explaining their country's opposition toward an defense cash pot handled by the Commission. Like others in this story, they were granted anonymity to speak about a sensitive topic.

 

Countries such as Poland and Finland in particular want to shield defense from the Commission’s attempted overreach.

 

“Poland has a clear idea about wanting to do this outside of the Commission,” said a second EU diplomat from another country.

 

They added, however, these lofty arguments are really a “fig leaf to hide more sensitive issues such as member states not wanting to have any outsider saying what you should do.”

 

Tensions will come to a head during the March 6 emergency meeting of EU leaders,where von der Leyen said she will present a "comprehensive plan to re-arm Europe."

 

A draft document prepared by EU governments for that meeting, seen by POLITICO, urges the Commission to give countries more fiscal room "without delay" and to propose "additional funding sources" for defense "at EU level," including making it possible to redirect funds for regional development. They call for the EU executive to "present swiftly relevant proposals."

According to that paper, the Commission will offer different "funding options" in a letter to EU leaders.

The Trump effect

This week von der Leyen will outline how sheintends to loosen the EU’s spending rules to allow countries to effectively exempt military spending from Brussels’ tightly controlled budget deficit limits, several officials said, as the bloc reels from mounting fears that Trump will abandon Ukraine and Europe.

 

EU countries, however, are divided over the fine print of the "national escape clause" — an emergency mechanism designed to ease pressure on countries facing a sudden emergency.

 

Von der Leyen said that this mechanism will be applied “in a controlled and conditional way” to prevent rampant spending from highly indebted countries.

 

But fiscally conservative states such as Germany and the Netherlands, and military heavy hitters like Greece, want tolimit the emergency clause to countries that already spend more than 2 percent of their gross domestic product on defense, as an incentive for others to hit that target.

 

The idea has angered states that are short of this target, including Italy and Spain.

 

“That’s absurd because it would prevent countries that most need to increase spending from doing that," said a third senior EU diplomat.

 

A separate proposal championed by Poland consists of granting more flexibility to national capitals by broadening the definition of defense spending in EU rules.

 

Crucially, this option would allow EU countries to decide independently which investments are to be exempted — limiting the Commission’s policing role and potentially allowing unrestricted spending.

 

A fourth diplomat cautioned that the “Commission [will] hold more power to themselves” if this idea does not come to pass.

"Dunham’s boss at USAID in Indonesia, Dr. Donald Gordon Jr., author of Credit for Small Farmers in Developing Countries for USAID (1976), was identified in Julius Mader’s 1968 book, Who Who’s in the CIA, as a CIA agent.9

Another boss, Peter Geithner, was future Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner’s father.

Ann obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in anthropology at the University of Hawaii, writing a thesis which argued that Indonesian villagers were dynamic and could produce greater wealth if they had access to market incentives and capital.

Ann went to Indonesia in the mid 1960s at the time that the CIA supported a military coup led by General Suharto against the left-wing regime of Sukarno.

Over two million suspected members of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) were rounded up and massacred in its aftermath and thousands more were imprisoned—many for decades.

Much of Ann’s anthropological and consulting field work was carried out in East and Central Java, which provided a hotbed of support for the PKI—including among members of the Javanese women’s association and labor federation.

The CIA at this time employed anthropologists and development workers as undercover agents to gather information on villagers’ political affiliations, in which Ann, according to her thesis adviser, Alice Dewey, had taken an interest."

 

"In March 1965, Ann married an Indonesian Lieutenant Colonel, Lolo Soetoro, whom she met at the University of Hawaii’s East-West Center, a “kinder, gentler version of the School of the Americas,” according to one writer, and “cover for a training program in which Southeast Asians were brought to Hawaii and trained to go back to create agent nets,” as U.S. Information Service (USIS) Director Frank Scotten described it.

The head of the East-West Center in 1965 was Howard P. Jones, U.S. ambassador to Indonesia from 1958 to 1965.10

Jones was present in Jakarta as Suharto and his CIA-backed military officers planned the 1965 overthrow of Sukarno, who was seen, along with the PKI as an ally of China.

Jones later defended the coup in The Washington Post, writing that Suharto was merely responding to a communist coup against Sukarno led by Colonel Untung—which was actually set up by the CIA.11

A friend of Ann’s told her biographer that the marriage to Lolo was arranged, suggesting that Ann may have acted as a female “honeypot” for the CIA whose job was to recruit assets and help them obtain U.S. citizenship.

Hailing from an aristocratic family which lost out in Sukarno’s land reform, Soetoro was recalled to active duty in July 1965 before General Suharto’s right-wing coup and worked as an army geographer in Java and Papua New Guinea, where the Indonesian army brutally suppressed popular revolts.

Soetoro went on to become an executive at Mobil Oil and its liaison to Suharto, whose economic policies Dunham praised."

Jeffrey Epstein’s newly-revealed private calendar showed scheduled meetings with the current CIA director, a college president and attorney who served in the Obama administration, according to a report published Sunday.

 

New documents, which belonged to the rich convicted pedophile and were obtained by The Wall Street Journal, showed planned meetings with a slew of prominent individuals, including now-CIA Director William Burns, Bard College president Leon Botstein, Obama White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler and professor Noam Chomsky.

 

All the scheduled meetings were slated to take place after Epstein was jailed in 2008 on charges of solicitation, including soliciting a minor. WSJ could not prove each scheduled meeting actually took place, and the documents did not reveal the purpose for the meetings.

 

A spokesperson for Burns, who has taken the CIA’s helm since 2021 under the Biden administration, said the nation’s spy chief met with Epstein a decade ago when he was trying to leave the government.

 

"Director Burns recalls being introduced by a mutual friend in Washington, DC, and then met with him once briefly in New York City, about a decade ago as the Director was preparing to leave government service," CIA spokeswoman Tammy Kupperman Thorp said in comment provided to Fox News Digital.

 

"The Director did not know anything about him, other than he was introduced as an expert in the financial services sector and offered general advice on transition to the private sector. The Director does not recall any further contact, including receiving a ride to the airport. They had no relationship."

 

Ruemmler had dozens of meetings with Epstein following her work for the Obama administration and before taking the reins as Goldman Sachs' top lawyer in 2020, according to WSJ. The documents show Epstein was planning on Ruemmler joining him for a trip to Paris in 2015 and another visit to his private island in the Caribbean in 2017.

 

A Goldman Sachs rep told the outlet that Ruemmler had a working relationship with Epstein when she was employed at law firm Latham & Watkins LLP, but did not travel with Epstein. The spokesperson said Epstein introduced Ruemmler to potential legal clients, such as Bill Gates.

 

"Many of Ms. Ruemmler's contacts related to a potential representation involving the Gates Foundation, a representation of the Edmond de Rothschild bank, and other business opportunities," a Goldman Sachs spokesperson told Fox News Digital on Sunday.

"I regret ever knowing Jeffrey Epstein," Ruemmler said, according to WSJ.

 

The Journal reported that the majority of people they spoke to said they met with Epstein for donations or to make powerful connections. Botstein, who has served as Bard College’s president since 1975, said he met with Epstein to try to get him to donate to the liberal arts school.

 

"I was an unsuccessful fundraiser and actually the object of a little bit of sadism on his part in dangling philanthropic support," Botstein told the outlet. "That was my relationship with him."

 

Other prominent figures on the documents included:

Ariane de Rothschild, chief executive of the Swiss private bank Edmond de Rothschild Group; Joshua Cooper Ramo, who at the time served on the boards of Starbucks Corp. and FedEx Corp; former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak; Harvard University professor Martin Nowak; and anthropologist Helen Fisher.

Heart cell research on the International Space Station

Researchers from Emory University studying how heart muscle cells grow and function in a space environment found that spaceflight increases the expression of genes involved in stress response and cell survival, according to a study published in the journal Biomaterials.

The investigation was launched to the ISS on NASA's SpaceX Crew-8 mission.

 

The researchers reported that cell therapy is often thought to be a more promising treatment for heart failure, but a lot of the cells injected into the injured area do not survive, making that strategy less effective than it could be.

However, research conducted by Emory University via the ISS National Lab could soon change that scenario.

 

By building upon their previous investigation, revealing that heart cells not only grew faster and turned into beating heart cells efficiently in space, the researchers aimed to see if they could further develop those cells and make them more flexible.

In addition the researchers put together bundles of heart muscle cells into microscopic three-dimensional spheroids that imitated the structure and function of the human heart and sent them to the orbiting laboratory.

 

Results from the study indicated that spaceflight increases the expression of genes involved in stress response and cell survival.

The Emory team said the research, done on the International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory, can revolutionize cell therapy and open new pathways to repair damaged hearts in patients on Earth and lead to new ways of producing heart muscle cells on Earth that will survive transplantation into patients and respond better to stress.

The team’s investigation was funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, which provides critical support for fundamental science in areas such as tissue engineering and transport phenomena.

In January, research conducted on the ISS could result in early cancer detection, advance treatments for neurodegenerative conditions and improve respiratory therapies.

The researchers took advantage of the unique environment of the space station to investigate potential therapies that could benefit patients on Earth.

 

SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft had almost 50 biotechnology onboard as well as physical science and student research payloads sponsored by the ISS National Laboratory.

In 2024, The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) funded a solicitation searching for projects that utilize the ISS National Lab to advance tissue engineering and mechanobiology research.

Through the solicitation, NSF provided up to $1.6 million in funding for multiple projects.

 

Research exploiting these effects can lead to advances in the modeling of healthy and pathological tissues and organs, disease diagnosis and treatment, regenerative medicine as well other areas within bioengineering and the biomedical sciences.

When NASA's SpaceX Crew-9 launched to the ISS in September 2024, one of the ISS National Lab-sponsored investigations included a student-led project designed to investigate the consequences of radiation and the space environment on gene-editing mechanisms.

The ISS National Laboratory said that data from the project could help to develop techniques that more effectively protect astronauts and potentially clarify the genetic risks for some diseases during space travel.

Spire achieves two-way laser communication between satellites in space

The satellites, which launched in June 2023, are equipped with optical inter-satellite link (OISL) payloads.

The development of the OISL technology was supported by a European Space Agency (ESA) Advanced Research in Telecommunications Services (ARTES) Pioneer Partnership Project, within ESA’s Connectivity and Secure Communications directorate, with funding from the UK Space Agency (UKSA).

 

“Through our ARTES Pioneer Partnership Project, we have supported Spire in the development of a new OISL capability for their space data service network,” said Clive Edwards, ESA Pioneer Implementation Manager.

“This OISL system is set to transform satellite communications, offering enhanced security and efficiency for space-based data transmission.”

 

Following the successful demonstration, Spire will launch three additional LEMUR satellites with OISL technology in 2025, two of which are set to launch via Exolaunch on the Transporter-13 rideshare mission with SpaceX.

During the mission, Spire will also launch four additional LEMUR satellites to replenish its fully deployed constellation and enable missions for its Space Services customers.

Polish space agency investigates cyberattack on its systems

Poland’s space agency (POLSA) announced on Sunday it had suffered a cyberattack and is currently investigating the incident.

 

In response to the attack, the agency said it disconnected its network from the internet, and as of Monday its website remained inaccessible.

Poland’s digital minister, Krzysztof Gawkowski, confirmed that state cybersecurity services had detected unauthorized access to POLSA’s IT infrastructure and had secured the affected systems.

Cyber specialists are now working to identify the attackers behind the breach, he added.

 

Authorities have not disclosed whether the attack was carried out by ransomware groups or politically motivated hackers. They have also not provided further details about how the hackers infiltrated the system.

POLSA is the government agency responsible for Poland's space activities. The agency is a member of the European Space Agency (ESA) and oversees the country’s contributions to space exploration and satellite technology.

 

In January, Gawkowski said that Poland’s cyber space is the most frequently targeted in the European Union. He attributed most of the incidents to Russia.

Poland has become a prime target for pro-Russian hackers due to its military support for Ukraine and its role as a host for Ukrainian refugees.

In September, Gawkowski reported that cyberattacks on Poland had doubled since 2023, with over 400,000 incidents recorded in the first half of last year.

 

To strengthen its defenses, Poland announced a $760 million investment in cybersecurity in June.

Space agencies like POLSA can be attractive targets for hackers as they often collaborate with military and intelligence agencies.

A potential breach — whether by financially or politically motivated hackers — could expose sensitive defense-related information, satellite operations, or classified research, endangering national security.

 

Among recent examples of cyber incidents targeting space agencies is the attack on Japan’s JAXA.

The agency has suffered multiple cyber incidents since 2016, when it was among 200 Japanese companies and research institutes allegedly targeted by Chinese military hackers.

In 2023, unknown hackers reportedly targeted the agency’s network server, possibly to gain access to its general business operations.

This may have led to breaches of communications between the agency and external organizations with which it has confidentiality agreements, such as Toyota.

Australian Space Agency says Russian rocket debris and sonic boom possible off Tasmanian coast

Tasmanians have been told debris from a Russian rocket could fall in waters near the island, with the possibility of a "sonic boom" accompanying its re-entry to the Earth's atmosphere.

In an alert on Monday, the Australian Space Agency (ASA) advised of "the expected re-entry of a Stage II Soyuz 2-1B Fregat rocket into international waters off the south-east coast of Tasmania between 9am March 3 and 11am March 7".

 

ASA said: "It is possible that the object may survive re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere and land in international waters to the south-east of Tasmania."

The agency said the event was "expected to match the launch profile of a near-identical mission which occurred in August 2023".

 

"In that mission, visible space debris was spotted in the sky over Melbourne and Tasmania, and a sonic boom occurred which resulted in 23 'felt reports' being received by Geoscience Australia.

ASA said: "Given the similarity of the upcoming mission, reoccurrence of visible space debris and a sonic boom are possible".

 

The Australian government's National Situation Room said it would "continue to monitor this event in consultation with the ASA".

The ASA said the "re-entry of the debris is not expected to impact people or property".

 

"The debris may be visible in the sky and may cause a sonic boom. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority has implemented a temporary danger area to manage risks to airspace users."

The rocket's payload is listed as "kerosene" and "liquid oxygen".

 

'Danger area' in place for pilots

In a statement, a spokesperson said the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) had "established a temporary danger area south of Tasmania".

"A danger area is a way of alerting pilots to an increased risk of flying in the area. It does not prevent pilots from operating in the area," they said.

 

"The danger area has been established in accordance with our international obligations and warns pilots of potential debris as a result of a space launch and re-entry.

 

"This is not uncommon and is how aviation authorities around the world routinely deal with these pre-planned events."

CASA said it was "working closely with Airservices Australia, the Department of Defence, the Australian Space Agency and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communication and the Arts and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority to ensure appropriate safety measures are in place".

DARPA Requests Plans for "Large Bio-Mechanical Space Structures"

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) — which has been known to fund the development of sci-fi-sounding ideas like flying aircraft carriers or massive streetlights on the Moon — is now seeking public input on its plans to construct massive "bio-mechanical space structures."

As spotted by Gizmodo, the agency filed a Request for Information this week for the eyebrow-raising concept.

And while we're still not 100 percent sure exactly what they're going after, it sounds rad as hell.

 

According to a description of the request, DARPA is looking into the "feasibility" of creating "useful space structures" over 1,600 feet in length that could "disrupt the current state-of-the-art and position biology as a complimentary component of the in-space assembly infrastructure."

Possibilities, according to the document, include "tethers for a space elevator, grid-nets for orbital debris remediation, kilometer-scale interferometers for radio science, new self-assembled wings of a commercial space station for hosting additional payloads, or on-demand production of patch materials to adhere and repair micrometeorite damage."

 

What DARPA wants to specifically look into are new methods and "technical insights" to create these "large, self-assembled, mechanically stable biological growths in space."

There are plenty of advantages to having larger structures be constructed in space. For one, it's a whole lot cheaper than launching large components and other building materials from the Earth's surface.

And beyond welding pieces of metal together, DARPA is peering much further into the future by wanting to harness biological engineering to exploit its "rapid growth properties" — which could one day be done with minimal human intervention.

 

The agency used a tent as an analogy.

"Given the structural material of the tent poles, biological growth mechanisms are envisioned to be the 'cover' of the tent," the document reads.

In short, it's hard not to see DARPA's vision as a terrifying blob of space gloop — or "filler" — encompassing the necessary "electronics or structural materials."

Is the agency trying to leapfrog a near future filled with conventionally built space stations by jumping straight to a hard sci-fi paradigm where space structures are grown through biological means, not built?

 

It's certainly a pretty out-there concept, as we haven't even reached such a stage on Earth, where we've only started exploring concepts like using mycelium as living building materials.

And how long scientists have to work on the idea remains unclear at best.

Elon Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency is set to plow through the Department of Defense, which could bring about mass layoffs amid other budget cuts.

 

How lifesaving research into HIV/AIDS vaccines and Ebola, which recently landed on DOGE's chopping block, stack up to the importance of DARPA's grand visions of growing structures in space remains to be seen.

In the meantime, DARPA is planning to hold a "sponsored workshop" in April to discuss relevant "future research."

Air Force selects Pacific landing sites to test space cargo deliveries

The U.S. Air Force is set to launch an environmental impact review for a novel military logistics project, proposing the construction of two landing pads on Johnston Island, a remote atoll in the Pacific Ocean.

The pads would support the reentry of vehicles under the Air Force’s Rocket Cargo program, an initiative led by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to harness commercial rockets and reentry capsules for rapid global cargo delivery.

 

In a notice scheduled for publication in the Federal Register on March 3, the Department of the Air Force will formally announce its intent to prepare an environmental assessment.

The review will evaluate the effects of building and operating the landing pads on Johnston Atoll, where up to 10 reentry vehicle landings would be planned annually over four years.

This testing phase aims to demonstrate and refine the capabilities of the Rocket Cargo program, which envisions delivering critical supplies to any point on Earth within hours.

 

The environmental review will involve collaboration with multiple federal agencies, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Wildlife Refuge System, given the atoll’s status as part of the Pacific Remote Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

A draft of the assessment is expected in April, followed by a 30-day public comment period, offering stakeholders a chance to weigh in on the project’s implications.

 

Strategic foothold in the Pacific

The Air Force identified Johnston Atoll as the optimal site after evaluating several remote, government-controlled locations, including Kwajalein Atoll, Midway Island, and Wake Island.

Johnston stood out as the only location meeting all operational criteria: it is remote, securable, U.S.-controlled, accessible by air or sea, and capable of supporting the barged removal of reentry vehicles.

These requirements would align with the FAA’s Launch and Reentry Licensing Requirements, which prioritize public safety by mandating isolated landing zones for such operations.

 

Johnston Atoll, located about 700 nautical miles southwest of Hawaii, has a storied military past. Since the 1930s, it served as a hub for nuclear testing, missile defense, chemical weapons storage, and even an Air Force anti-satellite weapon test.

Decommissioned in 2004, the atoll was handed over to the National Wildlife Refuge System, though remnants of its military infrastructure — including an airfield — persist.

 

Cargo reentry capsules

The Rocket Cargo program represents a bold step in military logistics, leveraging the burgeoning commercial space sector to shrink delivery timelines.

Traditional airlift methods, while reliable, can take days to move cargo across continents. In contrast, AFRL aims to use space vehicles — such as reentry capsules dropped from rockets in flight — to achieve same-day delivery.

Companies like Inversion Space, Outpost, Sierra Space, and Varda Space are developing such capsules. Launch providers like SpaceX, Rocket Lab, and Blue Origin hold Air Force contracts to demonstrate these capabilities.

 

One scenario would be a rocket launches into orbit, releases a cargo-laden reentry vehicle, and the vehicle glides back to Earth, landing precisely at a designated site like Johnston Island.

Pending environmental approval, Air Force hopes to begin testing this year, using the Johnston landing pads to validate the technology’s feasibility and safety.

The new gig was said to have been a financial lifeline that could have provided him with a much-needed cash boost. However, it’s now been thrust into doubt given that no transactions have taken place.

SpaceX Starlink Mission

On Sunday, March 2 at 9:24 p.m. ET, Falcon 9 launched 21 Starlink satellites, including 13 with Direct to Cell capabilities, to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

This was the fifth flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched GOES-U, Maxar 3, and now three Starlink missions.

 

The first stage booster returned to Earth and landed on the Just Read the Instructions droneship, which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean ~250 nautical miles off the coast of Florida.

Following the successful landing, an off-nominal fire in the aft end of the rocket damaged one of the booster's landing legs which resulted in it tipping over.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Sunday that he wants to pass a "clean" stopgap funding measure to keep federal agencies operating at current spending levels through September and leave proposed cuts for legislation for the next fiscal year.

 

During a series of television appearances, Johnson dispelled the notion that cuts identified by billionaire Elon Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency, which Democrats vehemently oppose, could be included in a continuing resolution, known as a CR, intended to avert a partial government shutdown when current funding expires on March 14.

 

"We're looking to pass a clean CR to freeze funding at current levels to make sure that the government can stay open," Johnson told NBC's "Meet the Press."

 

"We are working hard to do our responsibility to keep the government open. Democrats have to help negotiate this," he said.

 

But his comments did not appear to move Congress closer to a deal on government funding, with both Democrats and Republicans pushing back.

 

"There has been zero outreach from the Trump administration, and House Republicans have walked away from the negotiating table," the House of Representatives Democratic leader, Hakeem Jeffries, said in a statement on Sunday.

 

Republicans need Democratic support in the Senate, where their 53-47 majority falls short of the 60-vote margin needed to pass most legislation. In the House, Republicans need only a simple majority to pass a stopgap measure and hold a 218-215 advantage over Democrats.

 

It was not clear, however, if Republicans can muster the necessary support.

 

"I am a NO on the CR. Congress needs to do its job and pass a conservative budget! CR’s are code for Continued Rubberstamp of fraud, waste, and abuse," Republican Representative Tony Gonzales wrote on X.

Starship's Eighth Flight Test

March 3, 2025 5:30 p.m. CT

 

The eighth flight test of Starship is preparing to launch Monday, March 3. The 60-minute launch window opens at 5:30 p.m. CT.

After completing the investigation into the loss of Starship early on its seventh flight test, several hardware and operational changes have been made to increase reliability of the upper stage. You can read the full summary of the mishap investigation here.

The upcoming flight will fly the same suborbital trajectory as previous missions and will target objectives not reached on the previous test, including Starship’s first payload deployment and multiple reentry experiments geared towards returning the upper stage to the launch site for catch.

The flight also includes the launch, return, and catch of the Super Heavy booster.

 

Extensive upgrades to Starship’s upper stage debuted on the previous flight test, focused on adding reliability and performance across all phases of flight.

Starship’s forward flaps have been upgraded to significantly reduce their exposure to reentry heating while simplifying the underlying mechanisms and protective tiling.

Redesigns to the propulsion system, including a 25 percent increase in propellant volume over previous generations, add additional vehicle performance and the ability to fly longer duration missions.

And the vehicle’s avionics underwent a complete redesign, adding additional capability and redundancy for increasingly complex missions like propellant transfer and ship return to the launch site.

 

During the flight test, Starship will deploy four Starlink simulators, similar in size to next-generation Starlink satellites, as the first exercise of a satellite deploy mission.

The Starlink simulators will be on the same suborbital trajectory as Starship and are expected to demise upon entry. A relight of a single Raptor engine while in space is also planned.

 

The flight test includes several experiments focused on enabling Starship’s upper stage to return to the launch site. A significant number of tiles have been removed from Starship to stress-test vulnerable areas across the vehicle.

Multiple metallic tile options, including one with active cooling, will test alternative materials for protecting Starship during reentry.

On the sides of the vehicle, non-structural versions of Starship’s catch fittings are installed to test the fittings’ thermal performance, along with a section of the tile line receiving a smoothed and tapered edge to address hot spots observed during reentry on Starship’s sixth flight test.

Starship’s reentry profile is designed to intentionally stress the structural limits of the upper stage’s rear flaps while at the point of maximum entry dynamic pressure.

Finally, several radar sensors will once again be tested on the launch and catch tower’s chopsticks with the goal of increasing the accuracy when measuring distances between the chopsticks and a returning vehicle.

 

The Super Heavy booster for this flight features upgraded avionics, including a more powerful flight computer, improved power and network distribution, and integrated smart batteries.

 

Distinct vehicle and pad criteria must be met prior to the return and catch of the Super Heavy booster, requiring healthy systems on the booster and tower and a final manual command from the mission’s Flight Director.

If this command is not sent prior to the completion of the boostback burn, or if automated health checks show unacceptable conditions with Super Heavy or the tower, the booster will default to a trajectory for a soft splashdown in the Gulf of America.

We accept no compromises when it comes to ensuring the safety of the public and our team, and booster return will only take place if conditions are right.

 

The returning booster will slow down from supersonic speeds, resulting in audible sonic booms in the area around the landing zone.

Generally, the only impact to those in the surrounding area of a sonic boom is the brief thunder-like noise with variables like weather and distance from the return site determining the magnitude experienced by observers.

Developmental testing by definition is unpredictable. But by putting flight hardware in a flight environment as frequently as possible, we’re able to quickly learn and execute design changes as we seek to bring Starship online as a fully and rapidly reusable vehicle.

When several dozen Democratic political operatives and elected officials gathered at a tony resort off the Potomac River last month, frustration boiled over at the left wing of their party.

 

Democrats had become too obsessed with “ideological purity tests” and should push back “against far-left staffers and groups that exert a disproportionate influence on policy and messaging,” according to a document of takeaways from the gathering produced by the center-left group Third Way and obtained by POLITICO.

 

The group of moderate Democratic consultants, campaign staffers, elected officials and party leaders who gathered in Loudoun County, Virginiafor a day-and-a-half retreat, where they plotted their party’s comeback, searched for why the party lost in November — and what to do about it. Much of what they focused their ire on centered on the kind of identity politics that they believed lost them races up and down the ballot.

 

One of the key ways to win back the trust of the working class, some gathered there argued, was to “reduce far-left influence and infrastructure” on the party, according to the takeaways document. That included building a more moderate campaign infrastructure and talent pipeline, pushing “back against far-left staffers and groups that exert a disproportionate influence on policy and messaging,” and refusing to participate in “far-left candidate questionnaires” and “forums that create ideological purity tests.”

 

The gathering resulted in five pages of takeaways, a document POLITICO obtained from one of the participants. (Not all attendees endorsed each point, and the document — and Third Way — kept the identities of participants private.)

 

“In the wake of this election, where it became so evident that the things that the left was doing and saying deeply hurt [Kamala] Harris and down-ballot Democrats, a lot of people are looking to us, not just Third Way, but the moderates in the party, and saying, ‘We got to do it your way, because the other way ain’t working,’” said Third Way’s Matt Bennett, who helped organize the February retreat.

 

The document itself is perhaps one of the most comprehensive and sweeping of its kind following the election — both in its analysis of what went wrong and how to fix it.

 

The retreat's conversation centered on the party’s disconnect with the working class. Among the causes of that detachment: weak messaging and communication, failure to prioritize economic concerns, overemphasis on identity politics, allowing the far left to define the party, and attachment to unpopular institutions such as academia, media and government bureaucracy.

 

If Trump’s first term energized the party’s progressives, there are early signs his second term is doing the same for Democratic moderates.

 

The party chose the battleground-state moderate Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan to deliver its response to Trump’s address to Congress and the nation on Tuesday. Slotkin outperformed Harris by more than a full percentage point in all but 28 of the state’s 83 counties, according to a Detroit Newsanalysis.

Those gathered then laid out 20 solutions for how Democrats can regain working-class trust and reconnect with them culturally.

 

Among their takeaways:

 

• The party should “embrace patriotism, community, and traditional American imagery.”

• Candidates should “get out of elite circles and into real communities (e.g., tailgates, gun shows, local restaurants, churches).”

• The party needs to “own the failures of Democratic governance in large cities and commit to improving local government.”

 

The party, many of those gathered also argued, needs to “develop a stronger, more relatable Democratic media presence (podcasts, social media, sports broadcasting).”

Bennett said that, with the meeting coming just three months after the election, “we didn't expect to have a lot of answers about exactly what the Democratic offer to the working class on the economy ought to be going forward. We were still kind of picking through the rubble here.”

 

Bennett added, “I think what we discussed there on economic issues was the profound disconnect that we saw between the way that leading Democrats were talking about the economy and the way that people were actually experiencing it.”

Peace talks between President Donald J. Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy screeched to a halt last week after the argumentative Ukrainian president disrespected the United States and desecrated the Oval Office. Trump had invited Zelenskyy to the White House in good faith, hoping to secure mineral rights for a protection deal as recompense for the Biden regime having unconstitutionally funded Zelenskyy’s war of terror, but the negotiations quickly devolved into a shouting match, with the Ukrainian president overtalking Trump and Vance and suggesting a mere “thank you” was adequate compensation. As is his style, Zelenskyy showed up at the White House unkempt and lacking decorum. President Trump kicked Zelenskyy—who tucked his tail and went running toward France’s Emmanual Macron and Britain’s Keir Starmer to lick his wounds—to the curb, ordering US Marines to remove him from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

 

Behind the scenes, however, an issue unrelated to mineral rights unfolded. Upon arriving at the White House, Chief of Staff Suzie Wiles passed Zelenskyy a “for your eyes only” note President Trump had written preceding the meeting. In short, the note said Ukraine would not know the meaning of peace unless, in addition to signing the mineral rights agreement, Zelenskyy surrendered Deep State-adjacent pedophiles to the United States and guaranteed the safe return of children held hostage in Ukraine.

In the piece, Sailer cites Rudyard Kipling’s The Man Who Would Be King, specifically the Sean Connery and Michael Caine movie adaptation.

 

Both the article and the movie make for frustrating consumption, being 24 and 48 years old, respectively.Sailer’s assertion is that after the destruction of Osama Bin Ladenand/or his network, theU.S. should steer clear of nation-building. Now toss in the temper tantrums of those who wish to see Volodymyr Zelensky, a man himself who would be king, treated like royalty in America’s Oval Office and think to yourself if you want the nation to endure another Afghan-style debacle or as King Daniel in the movie says, “A nation I shall make of it, with an anthem and a flag.”

 

If you haven’t already,watch the film. ‘STAND WITH UKRAINE OR ELSE!’We’re always told we should “stand with Ukraine,”but we’re rarely (not never) told why. The adage that we should necessarily side with a liberal “democracy” (elections, when?) is farcical, given how the Western world has propped up dictators and terror factions and has scarcely showered itself in glory in recent decades in the context of classical liberalism (free speech) and democratic values (stolen, canceled, or defrauded elections).

 

From lawfare to outright cheating, the finger-wagging that once convinced an entire hemisphere to cheer on the dropping of billions of dollarsof bombs in the desert for the short-term aid of the defense industry and the long-term aid of the Taliban no longer works.So no, we don’t always need to side with the so-called victim, and that presupposes we view Ukraine as a victimized Western liberal democracy in the first instance. We do not.

 

When I visited the Maidan protests in 2014, it was abundantly obvious the fight was the salient of an expansionist bureaucracy(the European Union) more than anything else. Ideology played almost no part, political philosophy was out the window. This was a good old-fashioned power game, an Eurasian civil war for resources and, dare I say, lebensraum. That’s not to defend Putin’s response but rather to contextualize it.

 

I can think of no other rational reply to the European Union, NATO, and the CIA literallyparking their tanks on Russia’s lawn, which should not be considered an endorsement, rather than an “I told you so” from those of us who have been warning about this escalating war for over a decade.

APPEASEMENT AND MISUNDERSTANDING. The only other excuse we are given is “anti-appeasement,” which is perhaps the most poignant argument in favor of Ukraine. This strikes especially hard with Europeans, whether in London or Warsaw. A continent still reeling from the ravages of the First and Second World Wars is rational in its polemophobia.

 

Europe, as President Trump and his cadre have been pointing out for years, is disturbingly ill-equipped to fight a real ground war. For all of Sir Keir Starmer’s bluster about boots on the ground, Britain has but a handful of operable tanks, none of which are suited to the Eurasian theater.

 

But while anti-appeasement resonates, arguablythe most important part of the conflict resolution here is driving a wedge between Russia and China(sorry again, Ukraine, but we’re just not that into you). Europe sees this more like the last century’s major wars.America sees it more like the Cold War. Zelensky had a point in the Oval Office when he said, “you have nice ocean,”but lost the room with the follow-up, “you will feel it in the future.”

 

THE TRUMP-VANCE DOCTRINE. This line made Trump and Vance so irate because their resolution doesn’t involve a decades-long conflict—a ‘white Iraq’, as I wrote for Newsweek in 2022. It involves afundamental shift in global power dynamics that ends with China on the back foot and Russia squarely more interested in the West than the East. Ukraine is actually too small for the Trump-Vance doctrine. America’s appetite (see Greenland, Canada, etc) is greater today, but requires no blood sacrifice nor billion-dollar bombs to sate.

 

This is all against the backdrop of a prope mortem Putin andan impending opportunity for Russians to see Americans as their friends and allies rather than their natural enemies.The neoconservatives, neoliberals, and globalists should be pleased, if they held true to their public pronouncements about democracy promotion, Westernization, and even regime change in Russia. Those are an almost certainty in the coming decade if America plays its cards right.

 

But they’re not cheering Trump and Vance’s efforts because,quite simply, they were always more interested in war than peace, conflict over resolution, and cash piles from their lobbyists in Arlington, McClean, and Chantilly, Virginia.

 

It feels almost trite, at this point, to write it. But it is true.The elites want war.As surely as the pro-life lobby found reasons to nitpick against President Trump during the GOP primary,fearing an end to a decades-long gravy train, the defense industry is now jerking its knees,triggered by the only horror that could ever force them to wince: peace.

Minutes before it was scheduled to launch, the first commercial mission of Europe's new heavy-lift rocket Ariane 6 was called off on Monday due to an "anomaly" on the ground.

It was the latest of several postponements for the rocket as Europe seeks to secure independent access to space amid a shock rapprochement between Moscow and Washington.

 

The launch had been scheduled to blast off from Europe's spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana at 1:24 pm (1624 GMT) Monday.

While there had been some scattered rain in Kourou, teams on the ground had received the green light until just minutes before blast off.

 

But after an "anomaly" on the ground was detected, "the only possible decision now is to postpone the launch," said David Cavailloles, the head of the French company Arianespace which operates the rocket.

"I have no doubt that we will have another flight again soon," he added.

 

The launch was postponed as Europe seeks to reduce its reliance on the United States for security – and the European space industry struggles to remain competitive with Elon Musk's SpaceX.

The launcher was intended to place a French military satellite in orbit at an altitude of around 800 kilometres (500 miles) above Earth.

Europe has not been able to use Russia's Soyuz rockets since Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022, while the workhorse Ariane 5 was retired in 2023.

 

'We must be united'

The mission had taken on greater symbolic significance after the administration of new US President Donald Trump initiated a surprise rapprochement with Russia, prompting European nations to close ranks.

"Europe must ensure its own security," ESA space transportation director Toni Tolker-Nielsen told a press conference in Kourou before the postponement was announced.

"We must be united," Cavailloles said, stressing the importance of "not depending on anyone else" to launch satellites "in today's world".

 

The space industry has been experiencing major upheaval – and more is expected after SpaceX's billionaire founder Elon Musk recently became a prominent advisor to Trump.

"The concept of strategic autonomy, once mocked as a French whim, is at the heart of the Europe of tomorrow," France's research minister Philippe Baptiste told local media.

 

"The number of launches has exploded – not only American, but also Chinese," said French General Philippe Steininger, a consultant at the space research institute CNES.

Initially planned for December, the Ariane 6 mission was delayed until February 26 and then to March 3. The next launch date is not yet known.

The mission is to take the CSO-3 satellite into space. CSO-3 will complete a network of three French military imaging satellites, with the first two launched in 2018 and 2020 on Soyuz rockets.

 

Heavy security

The satellites have "orbiting cameras that take images in both visible and infrared light all over the globe, which is very important for military operations," Michel Sayegh, the head of the French government's armament agency DGA, told AFP.

Given the military role of the satellite, strict security precautions were taken to limit access at the spaceport on the northern coast of South America, with French fighter jets deployed to patrol the surrounding skies.

 

Europe's smaller Vega-C launcher was earlier grounded for two years due to an accident that resulted in the loss of two satellites, only resuming flights in December 2024.

The mishap left Europe without a way to launch satellites into orbit for a year, following delays to Ariane 6 and the end of cooperation with Russia.
