Musk wants ‘actions, not words’ from Zelensky

The Ukrainian leader has claimed Kiev is ready for an immediate ceasefire with Moscow

 

Words alone would not be enough to restore trust in Kiev, Elon Musk has said in response to Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s announcement that he was ready to sign a deal with the US on rare-earth minerals and agree to a ceasefire with Moscow.

 

“Actions, not words, are what matter. Let’s see what actions take place,” the billionaire and top adviser to US President Donald Trump wrote on X on Tuesday.

 

Zelensky earlier expressed his regret that last Friday’s meeting in Washington “did not go the way it was supposed to.”

 

The US and Ukraine were supposed to sign a rare-earths deal during Zelensky’s visit to the White House. The signing was abruptly canceled following a heated argument in the Oval Office, during which Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance accused Zelensky of not being grateful for American aid to Kiev. Trump later claimed that Zelensky was acting disrespectfully and did not want to achieve peace with Russia.

 

On Tuesday, Zelensky said that Kiev was ready to sign the minerals agreement at “any time and in any convenient format.” He stated that Ukraine was also ready for a prisoner exchange and a truce with a “ban on missiles, long-ranged drones, bombs on energy, and other civilian infrastructure.” He thanked Trump, US Congress, and the American peoplebut stopped short of formally apologizing for the Friday incident.

 

Following a shouting match in the White House, Trump told reporters that Zelensky would need to be ready for a peace with Russia if he wanted to be welcomed back.

 

Fox News cited a senior US official on Monday as saying that Zelensky should make a public apology if he wants to sign the minerals deal.Later reports said, however, that Trump was planning to announce the agreementduring his address to Congress on Tuesday evening.

 

Moscow welcomed Zelensky’s overtures as a “positive” development. “It is good that he [Zelensky] is ready [to go back to the talks with the US],”Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalist Pavel Zarubin of the Rossiya-1 TV channel on Tuesday.

 

Moscow has insisted that peace should be made on its terms, including the transformation of Ukraine into a neutral country. The Kremlin also said that Kiev must renounce its claims on Crimea and four other regions that have voted to become part of Russia.

After the Maidan coup in February 2014, the US CIA/State Dept owned Ukraine via proxy, and the CIA began using Ukraine as a giant offshore playground for criminal racketeering and money laundering. Ukraine became one giant CIA base, directly on Russia’s border.

 

Then the US/NATO began building up Ukraine’s army for the sole purpose of one day fighting Russia. The US/NATO began supplying Ukraine with weapons, equipment, missiles, training, intelligence, etc.

 

Covert elements within the US government, along with their European partners in NATO, used espionage to overthrow and take control of the nation of Ukraine, then built a massive standing army on Russia’s border, then tried to bring Ukraine into NATO, and thus start WW3.

 

If you are still buying the official MSM narrative about this conflict, you should not be engaged in conversations.

China has vowed to “fight till the end” after US President Donald Trump escalated his trade war by doubling tariffs on all Chinese imports to 20%.

 

Beijing hit back at Trump’s levies by imposing retaliatory tariffs of up to 15% on selected American goods, expanding export controls to a dozen US firms and filing a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization. It also sent a stern warning to the Trump administration: Chinese people will never bow to “hegemony or bullying.”

 

“Pressure, coercion and threats are not the right ways to engage with China. Trying to exert maximum pressure on China is a miscalculation and a mistake,” Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, told a regular news briefing Tuesday afternoon. “If the US insists on waging a tariff war, trade war, or any other kind of war, China will fight till the end.”

The military bloc’s European members have underfunded their militaries for decades, the top diplomat has said

 

Washington can no longer allow its wealthy Western European NATO allies to take advantage of US taxpayers to fund their defense budgets, Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News on Wednesday.

 

The top US diplomat was responding to comments by Friedrich Merz, whose Christian Democratic Union (CDU) won last week’s elections in Germany. Merz claimed that the US-led military bloc is in “jeopardy” due to Washington’s “indifference” toward Europe’s security.

 

“NATO is not in jeopardy,” Rubio said. “The only thing that puts NATO in jeopardy is the fact that we have NATO allies who barely have militaries or whose militaries are not very capable because they’ve spent 40 years not spending any money on it.”

 

The current US administration considers it unfair that some wealthy Western European member states only spend 1% to 1.5% of their GDP on defense, Rubio added.

 

“We just can’t keep subsidizing that,” he stressed. “These are rich countries, especially in Western Europe. They have plenty of money. They should be investing that in their national security, and they’re not.”

 

US President Donald Trump has argued that NATO’s current defense spending target of 2% of GDP per year – already a challenge for a number of member states – is too low and should be raised to 5%. During his reelection campaign, Trump said he would “absolutely”consider leaving the bloc if members do not “pay their bills.”

 

The US allocates around 3.4% of GDP to military expenditures, according to a 2023 estimate by the World Bank. In contrast, European NATO members spend an average of 1.9%, less than 60% of the US’ spending, Reuters reported earlier this month, citing S&P Global.

 

Meeting Trump’s proposed 5% military spending goal would cause France and Germany’s budget deficits to rise to 4.6% and 8.9% in 2025, respectively, compared to the current projections of 1.7% and 6%, S&P estimated.

 

Since 2022, the US and its allies have provided more than $258 billion in aid to Ukraine, including over $134 billion in military assistance, according to Germany’s Kiel Institute. Western nations have depleted their military stockpiles and struggled to increase arms production due to deindustrialization, offshore manufacturing, green policies, and sanctions on Russian energy.

 

Trump claims that Washington spent up to $350 billion on Ukraine under the administration of his predecessor, Joe Biden, and has vowed to recover this money.

 

Moscow has warned that NATO’s military aid to Ukraine effectively makes member states parties to the conflict. Trump is the first and only Western leader to acknowledge that one of the root causes of the Ukraine conflict was “the previous administration’s ‘pushy’ policy of dragging Ukraine into NATO,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last week.

EU’s von der Leyen proposes $840bn rearmament plan

 

The massive defense spending hike is crucial for European security, the bloc’s commission president has claimed

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed that member states spend about $840 billion on defense – an amount more than double total EU defense expenditure in 2024.

 

In a statement on Tuesday, von der Leyen cited the “most dangerous of times” and the “grave”threats facing the bloc.

 

“We are in an era of rearmament,” she declared, adding that she had sent a letter outlining her ‘ReArm Europe Plan’ to member state leaders ahead of the European Council meeting later this week.

 

“ReArm Europe could mobilize close to €800 billion ($840 billion) for a safe and resilient Europe,” she said. “This is a moment for Europe. And we are ready to step up.”

 

Official data shows the bloc’s total defense spending reached an estimated $344 billion last year, an increase of more than 30% since 2021.

 

The new plan includes $158 billion in loans available to member states to invest in what von der Leyen described as “pan-European capability domains,” including air and missile defense, artillery systems, missiles and ammunition, drones, and anti-drone technology.

 

The proposed five-part strategy is also designed to address the “short-term urgency” of supporting Ukraine, the EU chief said.

 

Von der Leyen did not specify a detailed timeline, but emphasized that defense spending must increase “urgently now but also over a longer period over this decade.”

 

Her announcement came just hours after news agencies reported on Monday that US President Donald Trump had ordered a pause on military aid to Ukraine. Trump has repeatedly accused Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky of refusing to negotiate peace with Russia and exploiting US support for his own gain.

 

The EU has historically depended significantly on the US for its security, primarily through the NATO. However, the Trump administration has recently signaled a major policy shift, urging European nations to take the lead in their own defense, as well as Kiev’s. Last month, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said that Washington intended to refocus its military priorities on countering China,warning the EU not to assume that American forces would remain in the region indefinitely.

 

Trump has previously warned that under his leadership the US would not defend NATO countries that fail to meet their financial commitments. He has floated the idea of raising mandatory defense spending by members to 5% of GDP, though none – including the US – currently meet that threshold.

Last October, Jeff Shell, the veteran media executive set to serve as president of Paramount Global after its merger with Skydance Media is finalized, convened a meeting with CBS News chief Wendy McMahon, "60 Minutes" boss Bill Owens, and government relations officials.

 

At the time, Donald Trump was loudly railing against "60 Minutes" over its interview with Kamala Harris, fixating on a baseless editing gripe that he absurdly claimed amounted to “election interference.”

 

He demanded that CBS News release an unedited transcript of the sit-down—despite there being no evidence of the journalistic malpractice he accused the newsmagazine of.

 

At the meeting, Shell requested that McMahon and Owens comply with Trump's demand and release the transcript, according to people familiar with the matter.

 

Shell’s involvement in the editorial matter immediately set off alarm bells. McMahon and Owens later told associates they were disturbed that Shell was inserting himself into the newsroom’s decision-making, given that Paramount’s merger with Skydance has yet to close and that corporate interference in journalistic matters is traditionally anathema.

 

Even more troubling, Shell seemed to believe CBS News should have simply appeased Trump, despite the dangerous precedent it would set.

In Kryvyi Rih, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the Hirnyk football stadium, where FC Kryvbas played its first match after the revival. The local team played a Ukrainian Cup match, and its opponent was FC Cherkashchyna.

The Head of State took part in the opening ceremony of the match, making a symbolic first hit from the center of the field.

Before the game, Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the locker rooms of both teams and talked to the players.

In a conversation with Kryvbas players, the President noted that the revival of the club is a great happiness for the whole of Ukraine, and wished the team to give its fans only positive emotions during the game.

"It's a great happiness for us. This is a great brand. I myself visited all the matches when I was a little boy. I congratulate you on your revival and wish you only victories. Good luck!” Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the players.

The footballers presented a team T-shirt with the number 12 to the President. This number is used to mark the fans in football.

In addition, the Head of State left the first signature on the symbols of Kryvbas in honor of the first match.

Finally, Volodymyr Zelenskyy took a memorable photo with the players of the revived club.

America’s 25% levies on Canadian goods are unjustified, the prime minister said

 

US President Donald Trump’s decision to slap Canada with tariffs was completely unjustified, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said.

 

Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian goods and 10% tariffs on Canadian energy took effect on Tuesday, after a month-long delay.

 

Trump has previously accused Ottawa of unfair trade practices and suggested that Canada would be better off as the “51st state” of the United States.

 

“We don’t want this. We want to work with you as a friend and ally, and we don’t want to see you hurt either, but your government has chosen to do this to you,” Trudeau said in a televised speech.

 

“They have chosen to launch a trade war that will, first and foremost, harm American families.”

 

“Let me be unequivocally clear – there is no justification for these actions,” the prime minister argued. He added that Canada had “worked relentlessly” to curb the shipping of fentanyl across the border. The seizures of the drug coming from Canada have dropped 97% between December 2024 and January 2025, he said.

 

Trudeau ended his speech by mentioning the recent editorial in the conservative Wall Street Journal magazine, which described Trump’s tariffs as “the dumbest in history.”

 

“It’s not in my habit to agree with The Wall Street Journal, but Donald, they point out that even though you’re a very smart guy, this is a very dumb thing to do,” Trudeau said. The prime minister promised that Canada would respond in kind and impose 25% tariffs on American goods.

 

Trump dismissed Trudeau’s response on Tuesday, mockingly calling him the “governor.”

 

“Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada, that when he puts on a Retaliatory Tariff on the US, our Reciprocal Tariff will immediately increase by a like amount!” he wrote on his Truth Social platform.

US and Russia made deal on Iran talks – top Putin aide

President Donald Trump has ramped up sanctions on Tehran, but also shown interest in a deal on its nuclear program

 

Washington and Moscow decided to hold separate talks centered on Iran during last month’s high-level negotiations in Riyadh, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov has said.

 

Senior US and Russian officials met in Saudi Arabia in February, in the first major talks between the two superpowers since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

 

”We discussed the situation around Iran, yes. And we agreed to hold separate talks on this matter,” Ushakov told the press on Tuesday when asked about Western media reports to that effect.

 

No set date for the talks has been agreed as of yet, he added.

 

US President Donald Trump has imposed heavier sanctions on Iran, touting a return to his campaign of “maximum pressure” on Iran in an effort to disrupt its nuclear program, network of regional proxies and conventional weapons capability. At the same time, he has shown interest in revisiting a nuclear deal with Tehran.

 

In 2015, Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with world powers, agreeing to curb its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, but Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from the deal during his first presidency. In response, Tehran took steps back from the nuclear deal.

 

Germany, France and the UK have demanded that Iran give up its nuclear program in a revisited deal in the coming months, under the threat of further sanctions, UK Ambassador to Israel Simon Walters said last week.

 

Over the past few years, Iran has been accused of ramping up production of pre-weapons-grade uranium, which Tehran has denied.

 

”Iran's nuclear program is within international frameworks,” agreements and the treaty on non-proliferation, and the International Atomic Energy Agency has all the “necessary facilities” for monitoring it, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esma’eel Baqayi stressed in a press conference on Monday.

(Bethany Blankley, The Center Square) The Center to Advance Security in America has sued the Department of Homeland Security to compel bureaucrats to release records related to Secret Service staff possibly colluding with Democratic members of Congress to strip then presidential candidate Donald Trump of his Secret Service detail.

 

In July, CASA’s director, James Fitzpatrick, filed Freedom of Information requests with DHS inquiring if DHS Legislative Affairs’ and Secret Service’s staff were involved with House Democrats who filed a bill to strip Trump of his USSS detail in the event that he were sentenced to prison, The Center Square exclusively reported.

 

At the time, one failed assassination had already occurred, and a New York judge had yet to issue a sentencing in a 34-felony count verdict in a trial Democrats argued would send Trump to prison for decades. Trump denied the charges, arguing the case and trial were a witch hunt, the weaponization of the court system, lawfare and baseless.

 

It would not be until after he was reelected that that the judge sentenced him to an unconditional discharge, meaning Trump wouldn’t face jail time. This was after two other federal cases against Trump were dropped, an alleged election interference case in Washington, D.C., and a classified documents case in Florida.

 

Prior to the first assassination attempt in Butler, PA., nine House Democrats cosponsored a bill last April, led by U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., to strip Trump of his Secret Service detail. After the failed assassination attempt, one of Thompson’s staffers, who was subsequently fired, reportedly said in a Facebook post the shooter needed shooting lessons so he wouldn’t “miss the next time.”

 

Thompson’s bill went nowhere in the Republican-controlled House. But Fitzpatrick, a former U.S. Senate staffer, had questions about how writing the bill came about, including how involved USSS staff were in crafting it – if at all– just months before the agency’s security failure in protecting Trump from the assassination attempt, The Center Square reported.

 

Fitzpatrick sent two FOIA requests, one to DHS and USSS, which is part of DHS, and another to DHS’s Office of Legislative Affairs. The first FOIA requested records, calendar entries, communications and other information related to a specific staffer “or any U.S. Secret Service Office of Intergovernmental and Legislative Affairs employee” and Thompson’s bill. The second request asked for similar information but lists other staffers’ names.

 

The Center Square asked Thompson’s office if he or his staff sought the input of Secret Service staff to craft the bill and received no response.

 

After more than six months of not receiving a response, CASA sued DHS on Monday. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. It states that it filed two FOIA requests last July and did not receive the requested information. It cites federal law, arguing DHS violated its FOIA obligations. It requests the court to require DHS to comply with federal FOIA requirements, provide the requested information and cover its attorney fees.

 

Even though there’s a new administration, a new DHS secretary and new USSS director, the information has yet to be released and the public has a right to know, CASA argues.
