There are a few reasons but the main one is the astronauts need to be relieved by a replacement crew to man the space station. Crew-10 is waiting to launch this month to relieve Crew-9 that arrived at the station last September with 2 empty seats reserved for the stranded astronauts. Problems with the Crew-10 craft delayed the relief mission which is now scheduled for next week. These missions are planned far in advance.. it's not as simple as renting another car. They lost their ride with Starliner and had to wait for the next planned rotation.
