Ryan Routh’s Attorney Seeks to Test Firearm Involved in Alleged Assassination Attempt Against Trump

The attempted assassination suspect appeared to forgo an insanity defense for the upcoming trial in September.

FORT PIERCE, Fla.—The defense team for Ryan Routh, who is suspected of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump during the 2024 election, said during a hearing on March 7 that it would like to test fire the gun that was found at Routh’s location near Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach.

Defense attorney Kristy Militello told U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon that the test could help determine whether the gun was operable and could fire at the distance Routh was from Trump at the golf course last year.

The Department of Justice objected to the test, which would involve a defense expert firing the gun after an independent agent transferred it from the government’s custody.

John Shipley Jr., an attorney with DOJ, called such a test “utterly unprecedented” and that it would be both “irregular” and “unsafe.”

He added that there was no factual basis for it.

An affidavit from FBI Special Agent Mark Thomas stated that Routh was seen fleeing an area where a Secret Service agent saw what appeared to be a rifle poking out of the tree line.

In that area of the tree line, agents found multiple items, including an SKS-style, 7.62x39 caliber rifle with a scope and obliterated serial number.

The March 7 hearing came amid a months-long pre-trial process that was extended by Cannon after a request from the defense. The trial is now set to start in September of 2025 rather than a previously scheduled date in February.

At a hearing in December, Militello seemed to indicate Routh might raise an insanity defense. She said witnesses had described Routh as hallucinating and delusional, and that it could take months to interview experts to evaluate his mental health.

In court on March 7, Militello acknowledged that the defense hadn’t filed something on an insanity defense by the deadline imposed by the court.

DOJ noted this in a March 3 status report, stating that issues related to insanity were “off the table for trial.”

It also stated that the government allowed the defense to inspect the firearm and planned to produce additional discovery materials.

They included “photographs and law enforcement reports memorializing a Jan. 30, 2025 search of the Nissan Xterra,” which Routh is thought to have used in fleeing the scene.

Other named materials included Secret Service radio communications and law enforcement reports summarizing third-party interviews.

Part of the government’s brief is critical of the defense’s discovery.

“Nothing has been provided,” DOJ said while noting that the defense discovery deadlines were “some ways away.”

'Troublemaker': Donald Trump Shuts Down Reporter Over Reports of 'Clash' Between Musk and Rubio

The mainstream media loves to report on alleged "feuds" between Republican public figures. While sometimes they find nuggets of truth, oftentimes it's half-baked or not true at all, and ends up being nothing more than an obvious attempt at sowing division and drama among party movers and shakers.

President Donald Trump has good momentum right now on the question of the DOGE advisory group, their responsibilities, and what role Elon Musk plays in all of it.

So naturally, the MSM has been steady cranking out reports on alleged "tensions" between certain GOP lawmakers, some of Trump's cabinet secretaries, and Musk, with the most recent allegation being that there was a "clash" between Musk and Sec. of State Marco Rubio that supposedly required Trump's intervention.

Here's how the New York Times reported it:

Marco Rubio was incensed. Here he was in the Cabinet Room of the White House, the secretary of state, seated beside the president and listening to a litany of attacks from the richest man in the world.

Seated diagonally opposite, across the elliptical mahogany table, Elon Musk was letting Mr. Rubio have it, accusing him of failing to slash his staff.

You have fired “nobody,” Mr. Musk told Mr. Rubio, then scornfully added that perhaps the only person he had fired was a staff member from Mr. Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.

Mr. Rubio had been privately furious with Mr. Musk for weeks, ever since his team effectively shuttered an entire agency that was supposedly under Mr. Rubio’s control: the United States Agency for International Development. But, in the extraordinary cabinet meeting on Thursday in front of President Trump and around 20 others — details of which have not been reported before — Mr. Rubio got his grievances off his chest.

Musk's alleged response was to scoff, according to the Times:

Mr. Musk was unimpressed. He told Mr. Rubio he was “good on TV,” with the clear subtext being that he was not good for much else. Throughout all of this, the president sat back in his chair, arms folded, as if he were watching a tennis match.

Trump allegedly intervened soon after in defense of Rubio, according to the Times' telling of it.

During a press gaggle Friday in the Oval Office regarding an executive order on a FIFA World Cup task force, Trump was asked about the so-called "clash." Here's what he had to say:

Reporter asks about reported clashes at cabinet meeting between Secretary Rubio and Elon Musk.

President Trump: "No clash. I was there. You're just a troublemaker…Elon gets along great with Marco. They're both doing a fantastic job. There is no clash." pic.twitter.com/kYDgCyAtSY

My thought bubble on this was that even if there was a "clash," so what? You've got a lot of powerful people in one room who have important roles and heavy responsibilities along with different opinions on how to run things, what the priorities should be, etc. I suspect horn-locking during these types of meetings is quite common as people jockey for position and plant their flags.

Though DOGE was a rebranding of the Obama-era United States Digital Service, it's still for all intents and purposes a new thing that is evolving, with its structure having to be periodically tweaked and its responsibilities having to occasionally be clarified and adjusted, as happened this week.

JUST IN: Woke Portland-Area Democrat County Commissioner Resigns After Being Indicted on 8 Felony Counts Related to Stealing TENS OF THOUSANDS of Dollars From Elderly Man

A woke, BLM-supporting Portland-area Democrat County Commissioner resigned on Friday after being indicted on 8 felony counts of theft, identify theft, and forgery.

Clackamas County Commissioner Melissa Fireside was charged with 8 felony counts of forgery and identify theft related to stealing tens of thousands of dollars from an 83-year-old man.

Melissa Fireside was elected in November 2024. The alleged crimes took place in September 2024.

“The defendant, on or between September 17, 2024 and September 26, 2024, in Clackamas County, Oregon, did unlawfully and knowingly commit theft of money, of the total value of $10,000 or more, the property of Arthur Wayne Petrone,” the indictment read.

Melissa Fireside stole an additional $5,000 from Arthur Wayne Petrone, according to the charging documents.

“The defendant, on or between September 19, 2024 and September 26, 2024, in Clackamas County, Oregon, in a separate and distinct criminal episode from counts 1 and 2 above, did unlawfully and knowingly commit theft of money, of the total value of $1,000 or more, the property of Arthur Wayne Petrone. The State further alleges that the property stolen had a value of $5,000 or more,” the indictment read.

According to the indictment, Melissa Fireside used forged signatures to wire promissory notes for $30,000.

Excerpt from KOIN:

A Clackamas County commissioner accused of theft and forgery earlier this week has stepped down from her position after a fellow leader called for her to resign.

In a statement issued, Clackamas County Chair Craig Roberts personally requested Commissioner Melissa Fireside’s departure. Officials announced she submitted her resignation letter on Friday, effective immediately.

“I recognize that for many, this decision is not soon enough, and I know how difficult and upsetting this situation has been for our community, and I want to thank you for making your voices heard,” Roberts said in a statement. “The Board remains committed to fulfilling our responsibilities to you and ensuring that the business of Clackamas County continues to move forward.”

The county administrator has already started searching for a new commissioner with a website that outlines the hiring process. Roberts said the community will remain informed throughout the process, as “public involvement is crucial.”

Fireside was elected as commissioner in November, replacing former county leader Mark Shull. Although the allegations against Fireside were publicized just this week, she was indicted for first-degree aggravated theft, first-degree theft, two counts of computer crime, two counts of identity theft and two counts of first-degree forgery on Feb. 28.

it's not an arrest,but it's a start!

Report: Trump’s State Department Revokes First Visa of Foreign Pro-Hamas Student

The Trump administration has reportedly revoked the visa of a student who protested in favor of Hamas, the Islamic terrorist organization which attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, according to Fox News.

The outlet said on Thursday the U.S. State Department confirmed the news, but legal constraints did not allow officials to identify the student or the university the individual attended.

State Department officials said, “Yesterday evening, we revoked the first visa of an alien who was previously cited for criminal behavior in connection with Hamas-supporting disruptions. This individual was a university student. ICE will proceed with removing this person from the country.”

President Donald Trump has issued many calls for foreign students on American university campuses to have their visas revoked if they supported terrorist groups. The Fox report noted that many college campuses across the nation have been epicenters for anti-Israel demonstrations. Some of those instances resulted in threats against Jewish students, violence against police, and vandalism.

In October 2023, Breitbart News reported that then-President Joe Biden’s (D) administration had no plans to revoke visas of students taking part in the protests that defended Hamas.

“After a number of Republicans urged Biden’s State Department to revoke the visas of pro-Hamas foreign students who hold F-1 visas, National Security Council (NSC) spokesman John Kirby said the administration will not do so,” the report said.

In May, then Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who is now the Secretary of State, said the time had come for student visa holders in the U.S. backing Hamas to be expelled, per Breitbart News.

The article continued:

“If you’re in America on a student visa and you’re supporting Hamas, then it’s time for you to go!” wrote Sen. Rubio on X this week.

The post included a clip of Rubio speaking on the Senate floor following the October 7 massacre, which saw the Hamas terrorist group perpetrate the deadliest attack against Jewish people since the Nazi Holocaust. The massacre saw the torture, rape, execution, immolation, and abduction of hundreds of Israeli civilians, as well as widespread Palestinian support for it.

On Wednesday, Trump met with several freed Israeli and American Israeli hostages and vowed to punish Hamas and Gaza if all of them are not released, per Breitbart News.

During the gathering in the Oval Office, the former hostages thanked the president for his efforts to free them and pressed him to keep working to do the same for the other roughly 60 who remain in Gaza.

“About two dozen of those are thought to still be alive; the rest are dead. ‘We believe you have been sent by God’ to release the remaining hostages, one hostage told the president,” the outlet said.

Former Priest-Convicted Child Molester Stripped of U.S. Citizenship, Ordered Deported

Jorge Antonio Velez-Lopez, a 69-year-old native of Colombia and former archdiocese priest, received a one-year federal prison sentence for passport fraud. Velez-Lopez, a convicted child molester, was naturalized by the court — losing his United States citizenship — and ordered removed from the U.S. to Colombia.

Velez-Lopez entered the United States more than 20 years ago as a temporary religious worker. He applied for permanent resident alien status through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in 2007 and was granted permanent residency in November 2007.

As part of the process, Velez-Lopez stated under penalty of perjury that he had never knowingly committed any crime of moral turpitude.

Velez-Lopez subsequently applied to become a United States citizen in 2013 to USCIS and stated under penalty of perjury that he had never committed a crime for which he had not been arrested, that he had never given false or misleading information to any U.S. government official while applying for an immigration benefit, and that he had never lied to any U.S. government official to gain entry or admission to the U.S.

Court documents state that Velez-Lopez was interviewed by a Citizenship and Immigration Services officer in May 2013 as part of the naturalization process to become a United States citizen. He provided the same responses to the same questions while under oath and under penalty of perjury.

Velez-Lopez submitted a passport application that same year. As part of that process, he declared under penalty of perjury that he had not included any false documents supporting the application.

Velez-Lopez was arrested in 2020 by law enforcement authorities in Howard County, Maryland, and charged with five counts of third-degree sex offenses and one count of a fourth-degree sex offense. He pleaded guilty on May 14, 2021, to sexual abuse of a minor for whom he had temporary responsibility for supervising and was sentenced to nine years in prison. Velez-Lopez was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

Velez-Lopez confessed to having sexually abused the victim from June 2003 through June 2009 while serving as the child’s priest. Velez-Lopez’s admission during his criminal case led to his subsequent federal charge of passport fraud, civil denaturalization, and final removal order.

Velez-Lopez’s case was investigated by ICE as part of an ongoing national initiative designed to identify and prosecute child molesters and other egregious felons who fraudulently obtained U.S. citizenship. The operation has successfully produced criminal and civil cases against defendants convicted of murder, serial rape, child molestation, incest, sodomy, child pornography, kidnapping, sex trafficking, narcotics trafficking, money laundering, tax fraud, pill mill prescription fraud, embezzlement, aggravated identity theft, and elder abuse.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Louisiana prosecuted the case with assistance from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Immigration Litigation and ICE’s Office of the Principal Legal Advisor.
