The Supreme Court said Friday it will consider the Trump administration's request to allow restrictions on birthright citizenship to take effect in part while legal fights play out.
In their virtually identical filings Thursday, acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris urged the justices to partially block preliminary injunctions, issued by federal district judges in Washington state, Maryland, and Massachusetts, that bar the government from implementing Trump's Inauguration Day executive order on birthright citizenship anywhere in the country.
The court, which had the option of rejecting the request, signaled it would consider the appeal by ordering responses from states and organizations that have challenged the constitutionality of Trump's order to be submitted by April 4, multiple media outlets reported.
Rather than asking the Supreme Court to uphold the president's executive order, the administration is requesting that court rulings in the three states be narrowed so that a judge's ruling in one state does not have the authority to overturn the executive order nationwide, according to the Washington Examiner.
If the Supreme Court decides in favor of the White House, Trump's executive order would take effect outside of the three states.
The 14th Amendment to the Constitution states "all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."
Under Trump's executive order, which was set to begin 30 days after he signed it, children born in the U.S. are not automatically entitled to citizenship if their parents are in the country either illegally or temporarily.
Harris urged the justices to "correct the district court's massive remedial foul," SCOTUSBlog reported. Over the past few years, several justices — including Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh — have criticized nationwide or universal injunctions and urged their colleagues to weigh in on their legality.
Harris contended such nationwide injunctions "transgress constitutional limits on courts' powers" and "compromise the Executive Branch's ability to carry out its functions," according to SCOTUSBlog. "This Court," she wrote, "should declare that enough is enough before district courts' burgeoning reliance on universal injunctions becomes further entrenched."
Harris urged the justices to strictly limit the district judges' orders to block enforcement of the order only to a smaller group: the individual plaintiffs in the three cases, the specific members of the groups challenging the order who are identified in a complaint, and — if the court agrees that states have a legal right to challenge the order — residents of those states.
At the very least, she wrote the federal government should be able to take "internal steps to implement" the executive order while the litigation continues, even if it cannot enforce it.

LONDON (AP) — All five parties in Greenland’s parliament issued a joint statement on Friday rejecting President Donald Trump’s latest effort to take control of the strategic Arctic island.
The statement was issued by the leaders of all five parties that won seats in parliament in an election held earlier this week.
“We — all party chairmen — cannot accept the repeated statements on annexation and control of Greenland,” the statement said. “We, as party chairmen, find this conduct unacceptable to friends and allies in a defense alliance.”
Greenland is a self-governing region of Denmark, a NATO ally of the United States.
The party leaders released their statement after Trump reiterated his desire to take control of Greenland, which guards strategic air and sea routes through the Arctic.
During a press conference with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Thursday, Trump was asked about his vision for annexing Greenland.
“Well, I think it’ll happen,” Trump responded.
He added "we’ve been dealing with Denmark. We’ve been dealing with Greenland. And we have to do it. We really need it for national security.”
Trump reminded his audience that the U.S. already has military bases in Greenland.
“Maybe you’ll see more and more soldiers go there,” he said. “I don’t know.”
Greenland Prime Minister Mute B. Egede was even more outspoken than his parliamentary colleagues in rejecting Trump’s comments.
"Our country will never be the USA, and we Greenlanders will never be Americans,” he said on Facebook. “Greenland is one country. We are united.”

Fetgatter Passes Bill to Protect Public from Sexual Predators

OKLAHOMA CITY – Rep. Scott Fetgatter, R-Okmulgee, on Monday in the House passed a bill that would require child sex offenders to undergo chemical castration before they would be eligible for parole.
House Bill 2422 is fashioned after Knight's Law, which Fetgatter passed in the House last year. That bill was named after young victims that attended Henryetta Public Schools who were killed by a released sex offender. The Knight is the mascot of the school district.
"A known sex offender in my district was let out of prison even after he was accused of committing additional sex crimes while incarcerated," Fetgatter said. "He murdered his wife, her children and several of the children's friends before he could be tried on those new crimes. This should never have been allowed.
"I have promised the families of these victims that as long as I'm in this building, I will fight for stricter laws against such offenders to better protect our kids. While I know this bill doesn't fix all issues dealing with sexual predators, it's a step in the right direction."
Fetgatter explained that ==HB2422 would make chemical castration an option for child sex offenders who are seeking parole, or they would be required to serve 100% of the sentence imposed.
HB2422 would affect those who are over the age of 21 who have committed a crime involving physical touch against a minor under the age of 13== that requires registration as a sex offender, and who has received a mental health evaluation determining the likelihood they would commit subsequent offenses if released on parole.
Knight's Law was named in honor of Ivy Webster, 14, and Brittany Brewer, 15, both of Henryetta, and Rylee Allen, 17, Michael Mayo, 15, and Tiffany Guess, 13. All were found dead in 2023 on a property in Henryetta in Okmulgee County in Fetgatter's House District 16.
The victims were shot by Jesse McFadden, 39, who had served 16 years in prison for conviction of first-degree rape. He was a registered sex offender who was facing additional sex-crime charges for allegedly soliciting sexual conduct/communication with a minor by use of technology while he was still in prison. He was scheduled to be in court on those charges May 1, 2023. When he didn't appear, authorities issued a bench warrant and discovered seven dead. Law enforcement said it looked as if McFadden shot himself in the head after killing the other six.
Also killed was Holley McFadden, Jesse McFadden's wife.
HB2422 now moves to the Senate where it is authored by Sen. Todd Gollihare, R-Kellyville.

8 Atlanta GoodFellas Gang Members Indicted on Felony Charges

An indictment was unsealed Thursday in Georgia's Northern District charging eight members and associates of the GoodFellas gang, alleging their participation in a criminal enterprise.
That activity included attempted murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and attempted carjacking in and around Atlanta, the Justice Department announced Friday.
The indictment alleges that six of the defendants shot and attempted to murder four victims and that two of the defendants attempted a carjacking and assaulted three victims with a dangerous weapon.
According to the indictment, the violent GoodFellas gang heavily recruits members in Atlanta jails and neighborhoods and Georgia Department of Corrections facilities.
Frank Hubbert, 38; Montavis Jones, 37; Darian Sheppard, 27; De'Andre Jackson, 22; Ephram Marshall, 24; Tahj Rankine, 26; and Leonunte Carson, 22, each face multiple counts of attempted murder in aid of racketeering and with using a firearm during the alleged crimes.
Hubbert and Ahday Nelson-George, 25, are each charged with attempted carjacking and multiple counts of assault with a dangerous weapon.
Atlanta News First reported a triple shooting in 2024 that left two 13-year-olds dead and a 12-year-old injured is attributed by Atlanta City Police detectives to the GoodFellas gang.
The Justice Department said the case is connected to its Operation Take Back America initiative, which is designed to eliminate cartels and transnational criminal organizations.
The DOJ has not revealed if any or all named in the indictment have been arrested.
