FCC's Carr Threatens to Block Mergers, Acquisition Proposals if DEI Involved

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr is threatening to block mergers and acquisition proposals from companies with diversity, equity, and inclusion plans, reports Bloomberg.

"Any businesses that are looking for FCC approval, I would encourage them to get busy ending any sort of their invidious forms of DEI discrimination," Carr told the news outlet Friday.

President Donald Trump says DEI initiatives are discriminatory and has banned DEI programs administered by federal agencies and government contractors.

Carr in February opened an investigation into DEI programs at Verizon and Comcast. His move to block M&A could threaten major deals in the communications sector, including Paramount Global's merger with Skydance Media and Verizon's acquisition of Frontier Communications, per Bloomberg.

"We can only under the statute move forward and approve a transaction if we find that doing so serves the public interest," Carr said.

"If there's businesses out there that are still promoting invidious forms of DEI discrimination, I really donโ€™t see a path forward where the FCC could reach the conclusion that approving the transaction is going to be in the public interest."

Justice Department Moves to Protect Trump From Jan. 6 Lawsuits

https://www.newsmax.com/us/trump-jan-6-lawsuite/2025/03/21/id/1203824/

The U.S. Justice Department has moved to shield President Donald Trump from civil lawsuits by police and Democrat lawmakers seeking to hold him responsible for violence during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

In court filings late Thursday, department lawyers told U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta to replace Trump as a defendant in the litigation and have the U.S. government take his place concerning certain claims because he was "acting within the scope of his office or employment" before and during the riot.

Protesters attacked the Capitol in a failed bid to prevent Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden's 2020 presidential election victory after Trump claimed widespread voting fraud.

The department cited a federal law that mandates that the U.S. government is the defendant when federal employees are sued in their official role under state laws. The department's move applies only to allegations made under local laws in Washington, D.C.

The Justice Department's new stance contradicts the position it took during Biden's administration, when prosecutors argued in a criminal case against Trump โ€” one that has since been dismissed โ€” that many of his actions surrounding the riot were unrelated to his official responsibilities.

Trump, since returning to the presidency in January, has moved to exert control over the Justice Department, and its new senior officials have demanded that government lawyers be faithful to his agenda.

Police officers and Democrat lawmakers filed eight civil lawsuits against Trump โ€” now consolidated and being handled by Mehta โ€” seeking monetary damages in the aftermath of the attack, arguing that he directed and aided assaults on police because of the speech he delivered shortly before the attack began.

Trump has denied the allegations made against him in the litigation and has asked the judge to deem him immune on the grounds the he was acting in his formal role as president.

Lawyers for several of the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The plaintiffs have urged Mehta to reject Trump's immunity claim. The judge has not yet ruled. A federal appeals court previously rejected Trump's immunity claim in the lawsuits, but let him renew his argument if he brought forward evidence that he was acting in his role as president rather than as a political candidate.

There is a catch though.

Lutnick says Trump has agreed to eliminate income taxes for Americans making less than $150K

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Friday said that he has received confirmation from the president that the U.S. will eliminate income taxes on households making less than $150K a year,if he successfully balances the budget.

President Donald Trump previously teased eliminating the federal income tax in January, claiming that if his plans with tariffs work out then he would eliminate the federal tax.

Lutnick told the โ€œAll Inโ€ podcast that he was recently in the car with the president when the idea was floated again.

โ€œIโ€™m in the car with him and I said weโ€™re going to balance the budget,โ€™ Lutnick said. โ€œAnd I said, โ€˜But I have one favor to ask you: If we can balance the budget for you, will you agree to waive all income tax for every person who makes less than $150k a year in the United States of America?โ€™ Which, by the way, is about 85% of Americans.

"And the reason you want to work for Donald Trump is he looks at me, he goes, โ€˜Sure,'" the secretary continued. "You realize, the President of the United States said, โ€˜If you balance the budget, sure.โ€™ And heโ€™s not lying; heโ€™s not kidding. Heโ€™s like, โ€˜Yeah.โ€™โ€

The secretary highlighted how the United States did not have a federal income tax until 1913, and had used tariffs instead.

Trump has already implemented tariffs against China, and is expected to impose other tariffs against Mexico and Canada, the two nations with whom the U.S. shares a land border.

The NGAD program will replace Lockheed Martin's F-22 Raptor with a crewed aircraft built to enter combat alongside drones. The plane's design remains a closely held secret, but would likely include stealthiness, advanced sensors, and cutting-edge engines.
