Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council Dmitry Medvedev has called the verdict an attempt by French authorities to eliminate political rivals, saying that the Fifth French Republic has completely discredited itself.

CDC Sounds the Alarm as Hospital Workers Struggle to Contain ‘Urgent Threat’ That Has a 30-60% Kill Rate

A drug-resistant fungus is on the rise in American hospitals, targeting patients who already reeling from illness.

New cases have been identified in Georgia and Florida hospitals, according to The Hill.

Candida auris has been in the U.S. since 2016, but cases have increased annually through 2023, the most recent year for which the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have data.

“We’ve had four people at one time on and off, over the past few months, and in years past, it was unusual to have one or even two people with Candida Auris in our hospital,” Dr. Timothy Connelly at Memorial Health in Savannah said, according to WJCL-TV.

JoAnna Wagner from the Georgia Department of Public Health said Georgia has had more than 1,300 cases through February.

The fungus spreads through medical equipment that enters the body, such as breathing tubes, feeding tubes, or catheters.

The kicker? Traditional cleaning solutions or disinfectants do not touch the fungus.

“Many of the disinfectants that are EPA-registered and historically used by hospitals and medical facilities are not effective against C. Auris,” Wagner said.

The CDC called Candida auris “an urgent antimicrobial resistance threat” in 2023, The Hill noted, and it is sounding the alarm again

“The rapid rise and geographic spread of cases is concerning and emphasizes the need for continued surveillance, expanded lab capacity, quicker diagnostic tests, and adherence to proven infection prevention and control,” Dr. Meghan Lyman, an epidemiologist with the CDC, said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“If you get infected with this pathogen that’s resistant to any treatment, there’s no treatment we can give you to help combat it. You’re all on your own,” Melissa Nolan, an assistant professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of South Carolina, said, according to Nexstar

Nolan said the fungus adapts to endure.

“It’s really good at just being, generally speaking, in the environment,” Nolan said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu releases a video after he is questioned by police in the Qatargate scandal and dismisses the investigations as politically motivated, adding that two of his top aides who were arrested “are being held hostage.”

In the video released on Telegram, Netanyahu says that when police told him that he needed to give testimony in the case, he immediately cleared time for it.

Comptroller warned PM, IDF, Gallant of border security negligence before Oct. 7

If the August 2023 warning had been heeded, Englman’s criticisms might have prevented the invasion.

Although the criticisms themselves were made regarding the northern border, and the reality there has radically changed post the 2023-2024 conflict with Hezbollah, the fact is that if Netanyahu, the IDF, and then defense minister Yoav Gallant had taken the criticisms seriously, it is possible Hamas’s October 7 invasion could have been prevented.

What change will the disclosure make?

In the defense establishment, the impact of the latest disclosure may be limited given that Gallant was fired on November 5, IDF chief Herzi Halevi resigned on March 5, and Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar is expected to be ousted in the coming weeks or months.

But for Netanyahu, the latest allegations could be a lightning-rod for at least two reasons.

For one, it presents a scenario where he had warnings of severe border security problems from a serious authority separate from the IDF and Shin Bet, who he has said misled him about the security situation.

In other words, it will be harder for him to claim that there was no way for him to know how bad the border security situation was.

Second, Englman has stuck his neck out to defend Netanyahu at a number of key points over the years, for which much of the center-left have turned on him as a “rogue” loyalist comptroller who ignores his duty to criticize the prime minister.

The fact that he, and not your usual officials who regularly slam Netanyahu, is attacking the prime minister for ignoring the border security warnings, gives the issue a flavor of greater credibility and of being nonpartisan.

Government issues warning after millions of liters of acid are spilled into major waterway: 'Disaster'

Millions of people could be affected by a significant acid spill that contaminated a major river in Zambia, and authorities are concerned about the potential long-term impact.

What's happening?

As detailed by the Associated Press, investigators from the Engineering Institution of Zambia determined that an acid spill at a Chinese-owned copper mine on Feb. 18 caused around 50 million liters of waste "containing concentrated acid, dissolved solids and heavy metals" to flow into a stream that is connected to the Kafue River, which runs for over 930 miles through the heart of the country and is considered Zambia's most important waterway.

While the AP noted that authorities are still investigating the full extent of the environmental damage from the incident, there is already reason to worry after dead fish washed ashore and signs of pollution were found at least 60 miles downstream from the site of the acid spill.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema told the AP that he is seeking help from experts and described the situation as "a crisis that threatens people and wildlife along the Kafue." He wasn't alone in assessing the magnitude of this issue.

"It is an environmental disaster really of catastrophic consequences," Chilekwa Mumba, an environmental activist who works in Zambia's Copperbelt Province, told the AP.

Why is this important?

Zambia is home to 20 million people, and the AP stated that about 60% of the population lives in the Kafue River basin. The river provides drinking water for around five million people and is a vital source for fishing, irrigation for agriculture and water for industry.

In the city of Kitwe, which is home to an estimated 700,000 people, the water supply has already been completely shut down due to the acid leak from the copper mine run by Sino-Metals Leach Zambia, which is majority-owned by the state-run China Nonferrous Metals Industry Group.

Zambia is among the world's top 10 producers of copper, an essential element in the production of smartphones and other technology. This has caused China to establish a foothold in Zambia to mine for copper and other minerals despite frequent criticisms and increased discontent over its presence within the African nation.

"It really just brings out the negligence that some investors actually have when it comes to environmental protection," Mweene Himwinga, an environmental engineer, told the AP. "They don't seem to have any concern at all, any regard at all. And I think it's really worrying because at the end of the day, we as Zambian people, (it's) the only land we have."

In addition to affecting the livelihood of residents who depend on the Kafue River, the acid spill also had a major environmental impact and caused deaths among marine wildlife as well as the destruction of crops along the river's banks. The reach of the contamination raised concerns among authorities who now fear that the mining waste can seep into the earth or be carried to other areas.

Gaza medics killed by Israel found handcuffed and shot in mass grave

Israeli forces are accused of executing 15 first responders who were found buried under their crushed ambulances

Israeli forces have been accused of executing handcuffed Palestinian medics before burying them in a mass grave underneath their crushed ambulances in southern Gaza's Rafah.

Fifteen humanitarian workers went missing last week after responding to a distress call from civilians being attacked by Israeli forces.

The workers include eight paramedics from the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), six members of the Palestinian Civil Defence search-and-rescue teams, and one UN staff member.

They were found over the weekend in a mass grave with at least around 20 multiple gunshots in each one of them, according to Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for the Palestinian Civil Defence in Gaza.

At least one of them had their legs bound, another was decapitated and a third topless, he added.

He added the humanitarian workers were buried in a mass grave, two to three metres deep, in “an attempt to conceal the crime”.

Canada Breaks Promise on Arms to Israel by Allowing $78.8M Contract for Artillery Propellant

Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) is outraged to learn that Canada has approved a contract for the export of artillery propellant to the Israeli military via the United States, despite an explicit commitment from Foreign Affairs Minister Joly that she would stop such transfers. CJPME urges Prime Minister Carney to block this transfer of explosive artillery fuel and finally implement a full two-way arms embargo on Israel without any loopholes.

A report published yesterday by Project Ploughshares reveals that Quebec-based General Dynamics (GD-OTS-Canada) is contracted to produce $78.8M CAD worth of artillery propellants for the United States, of which part will be supplied to Israel. The product is a specific type of explosive fuel needed to launch 155mm artillery shells, which have been heavily used by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza, and GD-OTS-Canada is the sole provider to the US. The contract was brokered by the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) in September 2024, only two weeks after Minister Joly blocked a similar sale of 50,000 “high explosive” mortar cartridges from the same company following pressure from human rights groups. At the time, Joly issued an explicit promise to block all weapons and components from being “sent to Gaza,” including via the United States.

“Weapons manufacturers are not taking this government seriously on the supposed prohibition of arms to Israel, and why should they? All we have seen from Joly is empty rhetoric, without any follow-up to ensure that her pronouncements are being followed. We need the Canadian government to enforce a full arms embargo and bring these loopholes to an end once and for all,” added Bueckert.

Canada’s arms control regime allows weapons to flow through the US to Israel unregulated, unreported, and without human rights evaluations. This includes an estimated $120.9M CAD worth of technology for F-35 fighters jets destined for use by the Israeli military. Earlier this month, 29 Liberal, NDP, and Green MPs in the Canada-Palestine Parliamentary Group issued a statement calling on Canada to “enforce a strong two-way arms embargo with no exceptions or loopholes.” Similarly, over 70 candidates from three political parties have endorsed Vote Palestine’s “Palestine Platform,” which includes the demand for a two-way arms embargo.

Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has completed the Seventh Review of the Extended Arrangement under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for Ukraine, which provides Ukraine with another tranche worth $400 mln, the IMF press service said in a statement.

“The IMF Board today completed the Seventh Review of the Extended Arrangement under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for Ukraine, enabling a disbursement of about $0.4 billion to Ukraine, which will be channeled for budget support,” the statement reads. This will bring the total disbursements under the IMF-supported program to $10.1 billion.
