The stock market is completely controlled by the market makers and the big money hedge funds. A stock isn't allowed to move in a direction if they might lose money on it. They can route inconvenient orders off exchanges, use dark pools, swaps, and more. And if all the financial wizardry fails they can use brute force and blow up the technicals to trick the algos in to doing what they want.
