"It's Un-American" - 19 Democratic State AGs Sue To Stop Trump Blocking Non-Citizen Voting

A group of 19 Democratic state attorneys general filed a lawsuit on April 3 disputing President Donald Trump’s executive order that requires voters to verify they are U.S. citizens and prevents states from counting mail-in ballots they receive after Election Day.

Filed in Boston federal court, the lawsuit follows two others that challenge the order. The plaintiffs say the order “usurps the States’ constitutional power and seeks to amend election law by fiat.”

“The president’s attempt to control our elections, intimidate voters, and limit Americans’ right to vote is unconstitutional, undemocratic, and frankly, un-American,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat.

On March 25, Trump signed an executive order, titled “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections,” mandating voters to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. The order also aims to stop states from counting mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day for presidential and congressional elections.

Last year, the states joining in the lawsuit had allowed late ballots that were postmarked ahead of Election Day to be counted if they arrived within a specific window established by state law.

In his order, Trump cited Denmark and Sweden’s policies of not accepting late-arriving mail-in ballots regardless of when they are postmarked and said the United States should follow the same policy.

California and Nevada led the group of 19 states in arguing that Trump lacks the sole power to amend states’ election procedures. Congress, they said, has the power under the Constitution to preempt state laws for federal elections.

“Neither the Constitution nor Congress authorize the president’s attempted voting restrictions,” California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, said in a statement.

Russell Brand has been charged with rape, indecent assault and sexual assault by London’s Metropolitan Police.

The police have said in the past few minutes that the comedian and TV host will be charged with one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, one count of oral rape and two counts of sexual assault after detectives started investigating 18 months back.

The investigation was sparked by allegations reported by Channel 4 and The Sunday Times. The charges relate to four separate women. It has been alleged that Brand raped a woman in Bournemouth in 1999, indecently assaulted a woman in 2001 in Westminster, London, orally raped and sexually assaulted a woman in Westminster in 2004, and between 2004 and 2005 sexually assaulted a woman, also in Westminster.

Meta faces $2.4bn legal action in Africa over war content

Petitioners are demanding that the US tech company set up a fund for Ethiopian victims of violence incited on its platform

A Kenyan court has ruled that Facebook’s owner, Meta, can face a $2.4 billion lawsuit in the East African country for allegedly promoting hate speech which fueled an ethnic war in neighboring Ethiopia, a group that filed the case has announced.

The decision by Kenya’s High Court on Thursday comes more than two years after a group of Ethiopian researchers, along with Kenyan human rights campaigners, launched the lawsuit against the American tech giant.

The petitioners argue that Facebook’s recommendation algorithm amplified violent posts and contributed to the two-year conflict in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, which ended in November 2022. Maereg Amare, a chemistry professor, was killed during the conflict after his home address and posts calling for his murder were published on Facebook, according to his son, Abrham Meareg, one of the plaintiffs.

Fisseha Tekle, a former researcher at Amnesty International and claimant in the case who published reports on crimes committed during the Tigray war, also allegedly received death threats on the Meta platform. The other petitioner is the Katiba Institute (KI), a Kenya-based legal non-profit organization.

The plaintiffs are demanding that Meta hire more content moderators in Africa, with better pay and working conditions, as well as establish a $2.4 billion restitution fund for the victims of hate and violence incited on the platform. The petition also asks the firm to alter its algorithm to stop promoting “viral hate” and formally apologize for the murder of Professor Meareg.

However, Meta argues that Kenyan courts lack jurisdiction to hear cases against it because it is not registered as a company in the African country.

China hits back at US with 34% import tariffs

The move follows President Donald Trump’s “reciprocal” duties on all Chinese goods

China will impose a 34% tariff on all imports from the US starting April 10, the country’s Finance Ministry announced on Friday. The decision follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 34% levy on Chinese goods in the latest escalation of a tariff war.

Beijing’s announcement comes after the Ministry of Commerce condemned the US tariffs, denouncing them as “unilateral bullying.”

Trump on Wednesday rolled out a broad new slate of tariffs ranging from 10% to 49% on imports from all countries, based on what the US president called the principle of reciprocity.

China – labeled one of the “worst offenders” by Trump – was hit with a new 34% tariff on its exports to the US, on top of an existing 20% levy, bringing total duties to at least 54%.

Beijing has also filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO) in response to the tariffs.

Alongside the WTO action, China’s Commerce Ministry introduced new restrictions aimed at American companies. Eleven US firms were added to China’s unreliable entities list due to their reported military cooperation with Taiwan. Additionally, 16 US companies were placed under new export control measures designed to monitor the transfer of dual-use goods.

Prior to the latest round of Washington’s duties, the US and China had a sharp tariff gap. According to Bloomberg calculations, China’s average tariff on US products stood at 17.8%, compared to the 32.8% levied by the US on Chinese goods.

“The US action does not abide by international trade rules, severely undermines China’s legitimate and lawful rights and interests, and is typical unilateral bullying,” the Finance Ministry said in a statement announcing the reciprocal 34% tariffs.

Beijing has condemned the measures, warning that they damage the balance established through years of multilateral trade negotiations. It has urged Washington to “immediately” remove the tariffs and resolve any disputes through “fair and equal dialogue” with its trade partners.

Hamas Ready To Free All Hostages At Once For Permanent Truce

Amid an expanded Israeli military (IDF) ground operation, which has again seen Rafah surrounded, Hamas is signaling that it's ready to release all remaining Israeli hostages in exchange for a permanent ceasefire.

A Thursday Times of Israel report cited a senior Palestinian official who described that Israel has had a "longstanding rejection" of such a deal, which is why Hamas has so far offered a phased release approach; however, negotiations are at a "standstill" as the IDF has moved to a military solution.

Israel has reportedly countered by asking Hamas to release eleven hostages, but with no commitment this would lead to permanent ceasefire talks.

"While Netanyahu signed onto the deal, he has long rejected the latter two clauses of phase two, arguing they would allow Hamas to remain in power," the report observes. "Accordingly, he has largely refused to hold talks regarding phase two of the deal, which were supposed to begin on February 2."

The senior Palestinian official sourced in the Israeli media report said, "The number of hostages is not the issue. If Israel demonstrates its intention to reach a permanent ceasefire, [Hamas is] prepared to release all of the hostages."

"Israel only wants a partial agreement so that it can continue fighting. It wants [Hamas] to give up all the hostages without entering the second phase," the official claimed.

The Netanyahu government is now going much further with its demands if the military operation in Gaza is to cease. It is demanding that Hamas fully disarm, which is not going to happen. The senior Palestinian official asserted that the group will "never disarm" until a Palestinian state is created. Israel fears the terror group would just rise up again and resume rocket launches on its territory.

Meanwhile there's been a new huge wave of Palestinian displacement in the south of Gaza, with reports of hundreds of thousands fleeing Rafah amid a renewed assault. The enclave for more than the last year been even more crowded, given it has served as a last place of refuge for the displaced from northern and central Gaza.

The wartime situation is set to continue for the foreseeable future, given new IDF spokesman, Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin, declared Thursday that the military has entered "a new stage" of the fight against Hamas.

Whirpool announces layoff of 650 workers in Iowa, one third of its workforce, due to projected reduced consumer demand.

Whirlpool Corp. has announced it is letting go of 651 workers from its manufacturing facility in Amana, effective June 1, in the largest single Iowa layoff since Tyson Foods last spring shut down its 1,200-worker pork plant in Perry.

A statement from Whirlpool blamed the layoffs on reduced consumer demand, primarily refrigeration units.

“This is really about aligning to current market conditions driven by consumer demand, particularly as it relates to the some of the appliances (refrigeration) made in Amana,” the statement said.

The layoff will affect nearly one-third of the company’s workforce of 2,000 employees in Amana.

Only 15 Senators Vote to Block Arms to Israel, Despite Majority of Americans Wanting Aid to End

The Senate on Thursday voted 82-15 and 83-15 against two resolutions seeking to block the latest round of arms sales to Israel – even though polls show the majority of Americans want to end all military aid to the Jewish state.

On Thursday, the Senate rejected Sen. Bernie Sanders's (I-Vermont) resolutions to block the sale of $8.8 billion in weapons to Israel by an even wider margin than in similar votes last year – despite Israel having since violated the Gaza ceasefire agreement.

The Senate's opposition to the resolutions comes as Israel has maintained a total humanitarian aid blockade on Gaza for over a month.

Sanders forced votes on two resolutions on Thursday, the first to block the sale of 35,000 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, worth $2 billion, and the second on the sale of tens of thousands of other bombs and JDAMs, worth $6.75 billion.

Both resolutions failed with overwhelming bipartisan opposition, by a vote of 15 in favor and 82 against for the first vote and 83 against for the second. Similar votes on Joint Resolutions of Disapproval brought by Sanders in November, to block $1 billion of tank rounds, mortar rounds, and JDAMs, failed but with smaller margins; several Democrats flipped their votes, despite the sales being pushed by the Trump administration this time around.

Those who backed Sanders's resolutions were: Senators Dick Durbin (D-Illinois), Martin Heinrich (D-New Mexico), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Tim Kaine (D-Virginia), Andy Kim (D-New Jersey), Ben Ray Luján (D-New Mexico), Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts), Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon), Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Tina Smith (D-Minnesota), Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland), Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) and Peter Welch (D-Vermont).

All Republicans voted against the resolutions. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin) voted "present" on both resolutions.

Senators Angus King (I-Maine), Jeanne Shaheen (D-New Hampshire), Raphael Warnock (D-Georgia) and Jon Ossoff (D-Georgia) voted "no" on Thursday despite voting for all or some of Sanders's Joint Resolutions of Disapproval in November.

Had this vote actually represented the will of the American people, over half of the Senate would have voted to not only block arms sales but also end all military aid to the Jewish state.

What has happened to the Constitutional Republic where all are equal under law?

I recently read an article by investigative historian Eric Zuesse, author of America’s Empire of Evil, that began “One of the core features of nazism (not the German political Party but its core ideology) is racism, which allows some ethnicities (or “races”) to be advantaged by law, and other ethnicities to be discriminated against by the law — it is, at its very core, AGAINST equal rights under law.” Well, I was intrigued by what was packed into one long sentence due to recent developments in the United States and I am sure that none of my regular readers will be surprised by my view that a lot of what has gone wrong in the United States and elsewhere has been due to a racist Israel and its powerful lobbies. Consider for a moment some initiatives undertaken by presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump that Americans who love their country should rightly find to be appalling, to include the enabling of the Jewish state’s genocide in Gaza and the elevation of “antisemitism” to the status of the number one “crime” that the Department of Justice is willing to investigate and prosecute, up to and including deportation of legal residents who dare to question what is taking place in Palestine.

When I refer to America becoming two-tier I am particularly thinking of US foreign policy, most particularly as it relates to the Middle East, and the operational imperatives of the Department of Justice and the Office of the Attorney General. And when I say two-tier I am suggesting that there are specific policies that are purely the product of political and economic corruption in that they do not serve any US interest – indeed, I would point out how they are contrary to American interests and designed to favor Israel and the groups and billionaires that make up the Israel Lobby over other American citizens and legal residents. In practice this has meant supporting everything the state of Israel does, no matter how atrocious, while also funding, equipping and providing political cover for the slaughter of possibly as many as two-to-four hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and the deportation of three million more.
