Eisen was Ambassador 2011-2014. Roberts became Chief Justice in 2005. This was while Roberts ran SCOTUS.

The White House DOGE office's actions led to 216,670 announced job cuts of federal workers and contractors in March, a new report by a global outplacement firm found.

 

The DOGE office has not confirmed specific numbers of layoffs, meaning the report by Challenger, Gray & Christmas is one of the few estimates of the sheer size of its actions.

 

Challenger found that DOGE office actions accounted for the majority of job cuts announced by US-based employers in March, making it the third-highest monthly total ever recorded since the firm began tracking the data in 1989. The top two months for job losses were April and May 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

"Job cut announcements were dominated last month by Department of Government Efficiency [DOGE] plans to eliminate positions in the federal government," Andrew Challenger, the senior vice president of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, said in the report. "It would have otherwise been a fairly quiet month for layoffs."

 

The firm found that the government led all sectors in job cuts last month. Challenger said the DOGE office's actions have led to a 624% increase in government layoffs compared to the first quarter of 2024.

 

Harry Holzer, a nonresident senior fellow in economic studies at Brookings Institution and a public policy professor at Georgetown, told Business Insider he wasn't surprised by the Challenger findings, given the reported scale of the layoffs.

 

"They might even understate the cuts to federal grantees and contractors, on top of the federal employee terminations," he said.

 

After taking office, President Donald Trump tasked the DOGE office and its de facto leader, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, with slashing government spending and reducing the federal workforce in its stated effort to root out waste, fraud, and abuse.

 

The job cuts to the federal workforce have come in various forms. At the end of January, over 2 million federal workers received buyout offers. In exchange for their resignation, employees were offered their full salary and benefits through September without needing to work during that time. The offer closed on February 12, with 75,000 workers accepting the buyout, the Office of Personnel Management said.

 

DOGE also fired en masse thousands of probationary workers — generally, federal employees who have less than a year or two of service — from a wide swath of federal agencies. Two federal judges ruled against that action and ordered the Trump administration to rehire those fired employees. The White House has said it's complying with the orders while it works through the appeals process, but many of the workers' futures remain uncertain as the Trump administration is asking the conservative-majority Supreme Court to weigh in.

 

DOGE's moves to effectively shut down the US Agency for International Development and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau have also resulted in job losses, though those firings are also being litigated in federal court. And major changes remain as the White House pushes to dismantle the Department of Education.

"It's Un-American" - 19 Democratic State AGs Sue To Stop Trump Blocking Non-Citizen Voting

 

A group of 19 Democratic state attorneys general filed a lawsuit on April 3 disputing President Donald Trump’s executive order that requires voters to verify they are U.S. citizens and prevents states from counting mail-in ballots they receive after Election Day.

 

Filed in Boston federal court, the lawsuit follows two others that challenge the order. The plaintiffs say the order “usurps the States’ constitutional power and seeks to amend election law by fiat.”

 

“The president’s attempt to control our elections, intimidate voters, and limit Americans’ right to vote is unconstitutional, undemocratic, and frankly, un-American,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat.

 

On March 25, Trump signed an executive order, titled “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections,” mandating voters to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. The order also aims to stop states from counting mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day for presidential and congressional elections.

 

Last year, the states joining in the lawsuit had allowed late ballots that were postmarked ahead of Election Day to be counted if they arrived within a specific window established by state law.

 

In his order, Trump cited Denmark and Sweden’s policies of not accepting late-arriving mail-in ballots regardless of when they are postmarked and said the United States should follow the same policy.

 

California and Nevada led the group of 19 states in arguing that Trump lacks the sole power to amend states’ election procedures. Congress, they said, has the power under the Constitution to preempt state laws for federal elections.

 

“Neither the Constitution nor Congress authorize the president’s attempted voting restrictions,” California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, said in a statement.

19 Russian Vehicles Shredded as Drone Swarm and Artillery Wipe Out Assault in Donetsk

In the area of the village of Andriivka in the Donetsk region, Ukrainian forces successfully repelled a major assault by Russian troops involving two platoons and 19 armored vehicles.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and the tactical group “Vuhledar” reported the incident on Facebook, publishing several videos of the battle.

Kyiv Post could not independently verify the time and location of the footage, which shows multiple drone-camera perspectives of the engagement, including Ukrainian artillery and FPV drone strikes.

 

According to the tactical group “Vuhledar,” Russian forces launched a large-scale attack on Thursday, April 3, attempting to break through Ukrainian lines near Andriivka, some 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) south of Bakhmut, with a heavy column of armor and assault troops.

The group revealed that Russian forces regularly carry out 25-30 attacks per day in this sector, primarily relying on infantry.

“But on April 3, 2025, the enemy attempted a massive attack using a large number of heavy equipment and personnel,” the report said.

 

Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance reportedly spotted the column on the outskirts of Andriivka. Artillery then destroyed the lead vehicle, halting the convoy and blocking further movement.

Fleeing Ukrainian fire, the Russian troops retreated into a nearby field, where they were targeted by drones, artillery, and air-dropped munitions.

“Multiple rocket launchers, artillery, FPV drones, and bombers persistently and purposefully destroyed enemy equipment and personnel,” the report added.

 

The General Staff confirmed that Russian equipment was moving along a road but came under extremely heavy artillery fire. Unable to maneuver off the road, the convoy was effectively trapped.

Ukrainian military journalist Andriy Tsaplienko also posted footage of the battle on Telegram, captioned: “Ukrainian artillery and drones simply smeared a column of enemy armored vehicles.”

According to Tsaplienko, Russian forces even deployed Kamaz trucks and Gazelle vans during the assault.

 

As a result of the coordinated Ukrainian defense, Russian forces reportedly suffered significant losses in both equipment and personnel.

According to the General Staff, 7 armored vehicles were destroyed and 5 more damaged, totaling 12 disabled or destroyed units. The “Vuhledar” group also confirmed 12 pieces of equipment were taken out.

Tsaplienko reported the destruction of a tank, two infantry fighting vehicles, and three “golf carts.”

 

However, reports of Russian manpower losses vary. The General Staff confirmed at least 18 Russian troops were killed and 7 wounded, adding that the count was ongoing.

Meanwhile, “Vuhledar” claimed that Ukrainian forces inflicted “sanitary losses” of over 60 Russian soldiers.

Tsaplienko cited 42 Russian troops eliminated during the attack.

The Trump administration has fired the head of both the National Security Agency and US Cyber Command, the BBC's US partner CBS has reported.

Drone strike kills three in south Lebanon: state media

BEIRUT, Lebanon, April 4, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - At least three people were killed in a "hostile" drone strike in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon on Friday, state media reported.

The attack took place around 3:45 am local time (0045 GMT) in a residential area of the city, the official National News Agency (NNA) reported.

 

It was not attributed to any party but came hours after Israel's military said it carried out an air strike on a Hezbollah member in southern Lebanon.

"A hostile drone raided a residential apartment… in Sidon, causing two successive explosions that led to a fire and extensive damage," reported NNA.

Emergency workers rushed to the scene where they recovered "the bodies of three martyrs," the agency said. The agency did not identify a target of the strike.

 

The earlier Israeli-claimed strike hit a car in a village near the border with Israel, injuring one person, NNA said.

Israel also struck Beirut this week, killing a Hezbollah official handling Palestinian affairs in the second such raid since a November ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese militant group.

 

The Lebanese health ministry reported four dead in that strike, including a woman.

Lebanese leaders condemned the attack but Israel said it was in response to rocket fire, which Hezbollah denied.

 

Hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah spiralled into all-out conflict last September, and the group remains a target of Israeli air strikes despite the November 27 ceasefire.

Under the truce, Hezbollah is supposed to pull its forces north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Israeli border, and dismantle any remaining military infrastructure in southern Lebanon.

Maereg Amare, a chemistry professor, was killed during the conflict after his home address and posts calling for his murder were published on Facebook, according to his son, Abrham Meareg, one of the plaintiffs.

 

Fisseha Tekle, a former researcher at Amnesty International and claimant in the case who published reports on crimes committed during the Tigray war, also allegedly received death threats on the Meta platform. The other petitioner is the Katiba Institute (KI), a Kenya-based legal non-profit organization.

 

The plaintiffs are demanding that Meta hire more content moderators in Africa, with better pay and working conditions, as well as establish a $2.4 billion restitution fund for the victims of hate and violence incited on the platform. The petition also asks the firm to alter its algorithm to stop promoting “viral hate” and formally apologize for the murder of Professor Meareg.

 

However, Meta argues that Kenyan courts lack jurisdiction to hear cases against it because it is not registered as a company in the African country.

Vatican, Russia discuss war in Ukraine after drone strike kills civilians in Kharkiv

Archbishop Paul Gallagher, Vatican secretary for relations with states and international organizations, and Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s minister of foreign affairs, had a phone call on Friday in which the two discussed global relations, according to the Vatican.

The Holy See Press Office said the dialogue between the two foreign ministers was dedicated to “the overall picture of world politics” with “particular attention to the situation of the war in Ukraine” and “some initiatives aimed at stopping the military actions.”

 

The call came after at least five Ukrainian civilians were killed and an additional 32 people injured after a Russian drone strike hit an apartment building in Kharkiv overnight, according to media reports.

While U.S. President Donald Trump continues attempts to broker a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire deal, both countries have accused each other of continued attacks on key infrastructure, including energy facilities and hospitals.

 

In response to accusations made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Russia not upholding the terms of the U.S.-backed deal, Lavrov on Tuesday said Russia would provide the U.S and the United Nations with a list of Russian attacks targeting energy sites, the Kyiv Independent reported.

During the Friday call, Gallagher told Lavrov that the Vatican wants to “continue its humanitarian effort in matters regarding the exchange of prisoners.”

 

Last September, Lavrov met Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin in New York while the U.N. General Assembly session was taking place.

On Sept. 16, 2024, Parolin held a video conference with Russia’s Commissioner for Human Rights Tatyana Moskalkova and “emphasized the need to safeguard fundamental human rights as outlined in international conventions.”

He also thanked Moskalkova for her role in securing the release of two Ukrainian Greek Catholic priests from prison.

 

Since 2022, the Holy See has reiterated its call for the release of all prisoners of war, access to humanitarian aid, and a permanent ceasefire between the two European countries.

Besides geopolitical affairs, the Vatican said the April 4 conversation between Gallagher and Lavrov included “matters regarding religious life” and the “situation of the Catholic Church in the Russian Federation.”

Senate Commerce Chair Ted Cruz is warning about major risks for the American economy and its automotive industry thanks to President Donald Trump’s trade war, saying it could result in the biggest tax hike in a “long, long time.”

 

“I’m seeing a lot of Republican cheerleaders reflexively defending what the White House is doing,” Cruz said on his podcast Friday, but cautioned the administration’s latest actions could “hurt jobs and hurt America.”

 

 

Cruz added he is “not a fan” of tariffs.

 

The alarm bells from Cruz, a Texas Republican who has called himself Trump’s “strongest supporter” in the Senate, reflects growing unease among Republicans about Trump’s tariff crusade and the impact it could have on prices for consumers and, consequently, the GOP’s political prospects.

 

Some Republicans have signaled interest in legislation to strengthen Congress’ authority to approve future tariffs after Trump earlier this week unilaterally slapped tariffs between 10 percent and 50 percent on countries across the globe, following through on his promise to impose reciprocal tariffs on foreign trade partners.

 

Cruz has not signed on as a cosponsor of that bill, nor did he vote Wednesday on a resolution that would end a national emergency Trump used last month to justify tariffs on Canadian products. He also conceded that, if countries back off their tariffs in response to Trump’s moves, that could be “great” and strengthen American agriculture and manufacturing.

 

He went on to say, however, that if countries respond with reciprocal tariffs — which some like China already have — while Trump’s tariffs remain in place, that could be “terrible for America.”

 

Cruz continued, “if we’re in a scenario 30 days from now, 60 days from now, 90 days from now, with massive American tariffs, and massive tariffs on American goods in every other country on earth, that is a terrible outcome.”

 

His comments suggest the dam could be breaking among Republicans on this issue — even among those who consider themselves staunch Trump allies — as the economic and political fallout from the president’s trade war crystallizes.

 

Cruz, for instance, said Friday he spoke the night before to one of the “Big Three” U.S. automakers — generally considered to be GM, Ford and Chrysler — who said that the tariffs could raise average prices of their cars by $4,500. That could begin as early as June, Cruz said, explaining there’s a lag in the supply chain that means prices wouldn’t rise overnight.

 

“This U.S. car company told me they actually thought foreign car companies would benefit more than they would, because if you send it over here, you pay one tariff, whereas this guys are getting hit on each part that is going over,” Cruz said.

 

It could also hurt Republicans in midterm elections: “If we go into a recession — particularly a bad recession — 2026 in all likelihood, politically would be a bloodbath,” he cautioned. “The upside could be massive, but the downside could be massive.”

China hits back at US with 34% import tariffs

 

The move follows President Donald Trump’s “reciprocal” duties on all Chinese goods

 

China will impose a 34% tariff on all imports from the US starting April 10, the country’s Finance Ministry announced on Friday. The decision follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 34% levy on Chinese goods in the latest escalation of a tariff war.

 

Beijing’s announcement comes after the Ministry of Commerce condemned the US tariffs, denouncing them as “unilateral bullying.”

 

Trump on Wednesday rolled out a broad new slate of tariffs ranging from 10% to 49% on imports from all countries, based on what the US president called the principle of reciprocity.

 

China – labeled one of the “worst offenders” by Trump – was hit with a new 34% tariff on its exports to the US, on top of an existing 20% levy, bringing total duties to at least 54%.

 

Beijing has also filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO) in response to the tariffs.

 

Alongside the WTO action, China’s Commerce Ministry introduced new restrictions aimed at American companies. Eleven US firms were added to China’s unreliable entities list due to their reported military cooperation with Taiwan. Additionally, 16 US companies were placed under new export control measures designed to monitor the transfer of dual-use goods.

 

Prior to the latest round of Washington’s duties, the US and China had a sharp tariff gap. According to Bloomberg calculations, China’s average tariff on US products stood at 17.8%, compared to the 32.8% levied by the US on Chinese goods.

 

“The US action does not abide by international trade rules, severely undermines China’s legitimate and lawful rights and interests, and is typical unilateral bullying,” the Finance Ministry said in a statement announcing the reciprocal 34% tariffs.

 

Beijing has condemned the measures, warning that they damage the balance established through years of multilateral trade negotiations. It has urged Washington to “immediately” remove the tariffs and resolve any disputes through “fair and equal dialogue” with its trade partners.

Russian Drone Attack Kills 5 in Kharkiv

Russian drone strikes killed at least five people and wounded more than 30 in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, authorities said Friday, the latest barrage amid mounting U.S. pressure for a ceasefire.

Russia and Ukraine have stepped up aerial attacks even as U.S. President Donald Trump pushes them to come to the negotiating table and strike a deal to end more than three years of costly fighting.

The attack on Kharkiv came hours before French and British military chiefs arrived in Kyiv for talks on how a European peacekeeping force could be deployed to Ukraine to help enforce any future ceasefire.

 

"An 88-year-old man died in hospital … As of this moment, five people are dead and 32 are wounded," Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov said on social media, updating the previous toll.

An AFP reporter in the city saw rescue workers climbing through the smoldering rubble of a destroyed residential building, as grey smoke engulfed the air where apartments used to stand.

 

Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of targeting residential areas and civilians throughout its three-year invasion.

Moscow denies purposefully firing on non-military targets, despite thousands of civilians having been killed in Russian air strikes, including on schools, hospitals and apartment blocks.

 

Six other people were wounded in overnight Russian strikes on the Ukrainian regions of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kyiv, local authorities reported.

AFP reporters in the capital reported loud explosions of the city's air defense systems operating throughout the night.

 

Russia's Defense Ministry said Ukraine had also fired more than 100 drones at Russian territory overnight, including on the capital Moscow.

A man in the Bryansk border region was killed in one attack, the regional governor said in a Telegram post on Friday.

 

Shortly after the overnight attacks, army chiefs from London and Paris arrived in Kyiv for talks on a possible troop deployment. "There will be at some point a need for military capacity or reassurance, whenever peace is reached.

And this is the reason why our army chiefs will be in Kyiv today in order to advance this work," French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on the sidelines of a NATO meeting in Brussels.

Ukraine is pushing for the West, including the United States, to include strong security guarantees as part of any wider peace agreement to ensure Russia does not attack again.

Schumer in Trouble? AOC Leads Him by Double Digits in New York Senate Primary Showdown

 

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s days in Congress may finally be numbered.

 

According to a poll shared with Politico, far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez leads Schumer by double digits in a hypothetical Democratic primary matchup for the 2028 Senate race.

 

The poll, which was conducted by the left-leaning group Data for Progress, showed that 55 percent of likely Democratic voters favored or leaned toward supporting AOC, compared to 36 percent who backed or leaned toward Sen. Chuck Schumer.

 

A further nine percent said they remain undecided.

 

While the vote remains three years away, such figures suggest that the Democratic Party may soon be taken over by individuals who make no secret of their socialist ideology.

 

“This poll really does show that Democrats are united in just wanting to stand up, wanting to fight, wanting to see someone taking a stand for them,” said Danielle Deiseroth, executive director of Data for Progress.

 

Deiseroth added that her polling firm “has a long tradition of wanting to challenge the status quo of Democratic Party leadership,” suggesting her polling may be biased.

 

AOC has not yet confirmed her intention to run for the seat, although she has also refused to rule it out.

 

Schumer, meanwhile, has already filed the paperwork for re-election.

 

Bad blood between the two lawmakers has risen significantly since President Trump took office in January, especially after Schumer voted in favor a Republican spending bill that will keep the government running until September.

 

“Just to see Senate Democrats even consider acquiescing Elon Musk — I think it is a huge slap in the face,” she complained at the time.

Hamas Ready To Free All Hostages At Once For Permanent Truce

 

Amid an expanded Israeli military (IDF) ground operation, which has again seen Rafah surrounded, Hamas is signaling that it's ready to release all remaining Israeli hostages in exchange for a permanent ceasefire.

 

A Thursday Times of Israel report cited a senior Palestinian official who described that Israel has had a "longstanding rejection" of such a deal, which is why Hamas has so far offered a phased release approach; however, negotiations are at a "standstill" as the IDF has moved to a military solution.

 

Israel has reportedly countered by asking Hamas to release eleven hostages, but with no commitment this would lead to permanent ceasefire talks.

 

"While Netanyahu signed onto the deal, he has long rejected the latter two clauses of phase two, arguing they would allow Hamas to remain in power," the report observes. "Accordingly, he has largely refused to hold talks regarding phase two of the deal, which were supposed to begin on February 2."

 

The senior Palestinian official sourced in the Israeli media report said, "The number of hostages is not the issue. If Israel demonstrates its intention to reach a permanent ceasefire, [Hamas is] prepared to release all of the hostages."

 

"Israel only wants a partial agreement so that it can continue fighting. It wants [Hamas] to give up all the hostages without entering the second phase," the official claimed.

 

The Netanyahu government is now going much further with its demands if the military operation in Gaza is to cease. It is demanding that Hamas fully disarm, which is not going to happen. The senior Palestinian official asserted that the group will "never disarm" until a Palestinian state is created. Israel fears the terror group would just rise up again and resume rocket launches on its territory.

 

Meanwhile there's been a new huge wave of Palestinian displacement in the south of Gaza, with reports of hundreds of thousands fleeing Rafah amid a renewed assault. The enclave for more than the last year been even more crowded, given it has served as a last place of refuge for the displaced from northern and central Gaza.

 

The wartime situation is set to continue for the foreseeable future, given new IDF spokesman, Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin, declared Thursday that the military has entered "a new stage" of the fight against Hamas.

White House spring garden tours scheduled Saturday were postponed in anticipation of large-scale anti-President Trump protests, first lady Melania Trump said on Thursday.

 

Why it matters: The mass movement is catching the eye of the Trump administration before demonstrators even take to the streets.

 

"This decision has been made out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of all within proximity to public demonstrations planned near the White House on Saturday," her announcement said.

 

Driving the news: Protests are scheduled all over the country on Saturday under the "Hands Off!" movement, expected to be the largest single-day protest since Trump took office.

 

Demonstrators will be rallying against political, economic, health and social Trump administration policies — as well as Elon Musk's involvement in the federal government via DOGE.

 

More than 1,100 rallies, visibility events and meetings were scheduled in all 50 states as of Wednesday afternoon.

 

Zoom in: Saturday tour tickets will be honored on Sunday between 10a.m. and 2:30p.m. ET, regardless of their original time slot, the first lady's announcement said.

 

Sunday ticket holders should plan to attend at their scheduled time.

 

The White House announced this year's spring tours on March 7. They're free and open to the public but require tickets.

Kyiv Says Official Killed in Car Blast in Central Ukraine

Ukraine said Friday that an official in the central city of Dnipro had died in hospital after a blast rocked his car.

The office of the prosecutor general said the apparent attack had taken place at 04:30 GMT and that it was investigating the incident as a terror attack.

 

“The official was killed in the attack. His wife was wounded and is currently in hospital,” the general prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

“Law enforcement officers are working at the scene. All circumstances are being established and measures are being taken to identify the persons involved,” the statement added.

 

The political party Propozytsiya identified the victim as Yuriy Fedko, a member of the Dnipro city council and said he died while undergoing treatment in hospital.

It added that police were investigating a Russian operation and personal rivalry as possible motives.

Police in the wider Dnipropetrovsk region released images of the blown-out remains of a vehicle in a cordoned-off area near residential blocs.

 

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Kyiv has claimed to have targeted military officials and pro-Kremlin public figures in assassination attacks.

Dnipro, an industrial hub with an estimated pre-war population of just under one million people, lies around 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the front line with Russian forces.

Trump Doesn’t Want ‘Endless’ Talks With Russia, Rubio Says

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that President Donald Trump does not want to be “drawn into the trap of endless negotiations” with Russia over ending the war in Ukraine, adding that it would soon become clear whether Moscow is serious about peace.

Rubio spoke in Brussels after meeting with NATO allies, many of whom have expressed concern over Trump’s outreach to the Kremlin to broker a deal to end the war in Ukraine.

 

“President Trump is not going to fall into the trap of endless negotiations about negotiations,” Rubio told reporters. “We will know soon enough — in a matter of weeks, not months — whether Russia is serious about peace or not.”

Allies have urged Trump to take a firm stance against Moscow, even as he pushes for a broad ceasefire despite continued accusations from both Ukraine and Russia of violations of a halt in strikes on energy infrastructure.

 

While Trump has advocated for easing tensions with Russia, he has also voiced frustration over the lack of progress toward a ceasefire.

Russian President Vladimir Putin last month rejected a U.S.-Ukrainian proposal for a full, unconditional ceasefire and tied any truce in the Black Sea to Western sanctions relief.

 

Rubio, signaling support for Ukraine, said Kyiv had “shown a willingness” to agree to a full ceasefire and open space for negotiations.

Whirpool announces layoff of 650 workers in Iowa, one third of its workforce, due to projected reduced consumer demand.

 

Whirlpool Corp. has announced it is letting go of 651 workers from its manufacturing facility in Amana, effective June 1, in the largest single Iowa layoff since Tyson Foods last spring shut down its 1,200-worker pork plant in Perry.

The Senate on Thursday voted 82-15 and 83-15 against two resolutions seeking to block the latest round of arms sales to Israel – even though polls show the majority of Americans want to end all military aid to the Jewish state.

Tesla is planning to build a new UFO-inspired Supercharger in the heart of Alien country — Roswell, New Mexico.

Back in 1947, a crash of debris led to rumors of an alleged crash of a UFO just 75 miles north of Roswell near Corona, New Mexico.

The crash was officially noted as the recovery of a military balloon, but over the years, speculation persists that the “flying disc” many saw might have been extraterrestrials trying to make contact with Earth.

 

As a result of the 1947 crash, Roswell has adopted it and used it as the inspiration for much of its tourism.

As Tesla is planning to build a Supercharger in the area, it is using the same sort of inspiration for the location, which will feature just eight charging stalls located under a CyberCanopy.

Tesla’s Head of Charging for North America, Max de Zegher, confirmed that the site will be inspired by the events near Roswell in 1947.

“Rambaldi’s beloved E.T. model is an extraordinary piece of film history,” Sotheby’s vice chair Cassandra Hatton told AFP.

“While it did not find a buyer during today’s auction, its significance remains undiminished.”

 

The model offered for sale is one of three used by Spielberg for his 1982 film.

In a statement before the auction, Hatton described the model as embodying “the artistry of an era before CGI (computer-generated imagery) took hold, a nostalgic and iconic piece of Hollywood history as captivating as the stories themselves.”

 

Sotheby’s said that a separate E.T. sketch made by Rambaldi had sold yesterday for over US$53,000, well above its top-end estimate of US$18,000.

In 2022, a metallic automaton representing E.T. and also used during the shooting of the successful film was sold for US$2.56 million at an auction organised by the American house Julien’s.

What has happened to the Constitutional Republic where all are equal under law?

 

I recently read an article by investigative historian Eric Zuesse, author of America’s Empire of Evil, that began “One of the core features of nazism (not the German political Party but its core ideology) is racism, which allows some ethnicities (or “races”) to be advantaged by law, and other ethnicities to be discriminated against by the law — it is, at its very core, AGAINST equal rights under law.” Well, I was intrigued by what was packed into one long sentence due to recent developments in the United States and I am sure that none of my regular readers will be surprised by my view that a lot of what has gone wrong in the United States and elsewhere has been due to a racist Israel and its powerful lobbies. Consider for a moment some initiatives undertaken by presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump that Americans who love their country should rightly find to be appalling, to include the enabling of the Jewish state’s genocide in Gaza and the elevation of “antisemitism” to the status of the number one “crime” that the Department of Justice is willing to investigate and prosecute, up to and including deportation of legal residents who dare to question what is taking place in Palestine.

 

When I refer to America becoming two-tier I am particularly thinking of US foreign policy, most particularly as it relates to the Middle East, and the operational imperatives of the Department of Justice and the Office of the Attorney General. And when I say two-tier I am suggesting that there are specific policies that are purely the product of political and economic corruption in that they do not serve any US interest – indeed, I would point out how they are contrary to American interests and designed to favor Israel and the groups and billionaires that make up the Israel Lobby over other American citizens and legal residents. In practice this has meant supporting everything the state of Israel does, no matter how atrocious, while also funding, equipping and providing political cover for the slaughter of possibly as many as two-to-four hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and the deportation of three million more.

During a recent forum of the Council on Foreign Relations, I described the need to further our relations with other residents in our cosmic neighborhood.

 

The latest statistical data on exoplanets implies that there should be billions of Earth-Sun analogs within the Milky-Way.

Although we observe many houses similar to ours on our cosmic street, the academic mainstream regards the possibility that they have intelligent residents like us as an “extraordinary claim” that does not merit major federal funding.

This argument is rooted in the belief that we are cosmically unique, despite the evidence that humans emerged from a soup of chemicals under natural circumstances that are abundantly replicated near numerous stars.

In reality, we are probably late to the party of our intelligent neighbors, since most stars formed billions of years before the Sun.

 

The latest Decadal Survey on Astronomy and Astrophysics of the National Academies prioritized the launch of the next major space telescope, the Habitable World Observatory, in the 2040s at a cost that will likely exceed ten billion dollars.

The goal is to search for biochemical signatures of microbial life in the atmospheres of exoplanets. No major federal funding was recommended for the search of technological signatures.

This is not the wisest strategy to hedge our bets in finding evidence for life, because technological signatures might be easier to recognize than the chemical fingerprints of primitive forms of life.

 

Based on the detection rate of interstellar meteors like IM1, there should be of order a million meter-size interstellar objects within the orbit of the Earth around the Sun.

As I noted in a recent paper, it would make sense to launch a space telescope that will monitor these objects and investigate whether there is any technological space debris, including pieces from broken spacecraft, among the interstellar rocks.

Part of the debris may have been washed away from the home planet by a strong wind or powerful radiation flares that emanated from the host star, especially if it evolved to a red giant.

 

The anomalies of the interstellar objects `Oumuamua and IM1, which were discovered over the past decade, should make us curious in searching for technological signatures in a new way.

The traditional SETI approach of searching for radio signals might not be the best strategy. It is equivalent to waiting at home for a phone call from one of the residents on our street.

If we are not recognized as important in the cosmic scheme of things, nobody may call us while we are waiting. Civilizations that were too loud might have been extinguished by predators millions of years ago.

We must be proactive in allocating billions of dollars to the search for physical relics that arrive near Earth from a neighbor’s yard.

The largest projects in science are supported by taxpayers. It therefore makes sense for scientific priorities to reflect the priorities of taxpayers.

In contrast tothe Astro 2020 Decadal Survey, taxpayers would have probably prioritized the search for technological signatures with a comparable level of funding to the search for microbial life.

Why is there a disconnect between the public and academia? Perhaps common sense is not common among mainstream scientists.

 

If astronomers were to invest billions of dollars in the search for extraterrestrial technological relics near Earth and then find them, the implications to society would be immense.

First, policy makers would need to establish a Council on Alien Relations as a separate organization from the Council on Foreign Relations — which focuses on the relations between nations on Earth.

At a distance of ten times the Earth-Sun separation, the boundaries between nations cannot be separated by our best working telescopes.

The nearest star, Proxima Centauri, is 27 thousand times farther away, and most Milky-Way stars are tens of thousands of times farther than this star.

As a result, interstellar matters have no dependance on the way humans choose to split Earth among nations.

 

After we discover interstellar technologies, space will no longer be viewed in the context of national security or national pride.

Instead, policy makers will have to confront new questions concerning how to interact with other residents on our cosmic street: Should our terrestrial laws of ethics apply to aliens that are equally smart or even smarter than us?

Are we free to contaminate virgin territories with terrestrial forms or life? Should we respect indigenous species for the ownership of alien lands? What are the scientific, military and commercial implications of interactions with our neighbors?

Do alien encounters pose existential or health risks? What can we learn about our cosmic history from interstellar archaeology? What form of government should we establish on alien land?

 

Even though alien land may offer opportunities for societies to start from scratch, it is likely that humanity will export its flaws to any territory it occupies. The politics on Mars is not likely to be much better than that in Washington D.C. at present.

It is impossible to decide about a general policy before knowing our neighbors. As a first step, we should search for them. Being in denial that they exist is not a good idea, because one day they may knock on our front door.

Rudnev — already convicted of rape and running a violent sex cult in Russia — reportedly tried to slit his throat with a razor as officers closed in, according to El Pais.

He was reportedly treated for his injuries and was pictured with a bandage around his neck.

He now faces fresh charges of human trafficking, sexual exploitation and drug offences, more than a decade after he was jailed for 11 years in Siberia for a string of abuse crimes involving female followers.

 

The bizarre cult, Ashram Shambala, founded in 1989 in Novosibirsk, brainwashed followers — mostly women — into surrendering their property.

They would reportedly cut ties with loved ones and take part in so-called "ritual orgies" in exchange for "salvation."

Women were allegedly coerced into sex with Rudnev — while male followers were ordered to remain celibate.

 

The cult even flogged recordings of the encounters to fund operations and promised spiritual enlightenment via “women’s practices” and Eastern esotericism.

Rudnev once wrote a book titled 'The Way of the Madman', which became required reading among the group’s 20,000-strong base of fanatics across 18 Russian regions.

He previously served in the Soviet military but ended up in a psychiatric hospital after going berserk on guard duty, opening fire at random targets.

 

Authorities swooped after a 22-year-old pregnant Russian woman arrived at a hospital in the picturesque Patagonian city of Bariloche.

Medics were alarmed by her terrified expression and frail condition — and the suspicious behaviour of two Russian women who accompanied her.

“Her passport said she was 22, but if she's even 15, that's too old,” a detective told local outlet Infobae, raising fears the woman could be a minor.

 

Police linked the women to Rudnev and tracked him down at the airport — just as he was about to board a flight to Buenos Aires with a connection to Porto Alegre in Brazil.

A simultaneous sting at the Buenos Aires airport netted the rest of the cult, including another man and six women — five Russian and one Mexican.

All 14 suspects were remanded in custody.

 

Cops found 130 cocaine pills, $15,000 in cash, a satellite phone, 12 mobiles and 10 SIM cards in their possession, El Pais reports.

A former member of the cult previously told Russian media: “One of the sect’s mottos and one of the guru’s favorite expressions is ‘eat less, jump more!’ My body began to wear out and I lost a lot of weight. I looked like a dystrophic alcoholic.”

Women were said to be fed leftovers from those higher in the sect’s pyramid, while “ritual pornography” was filmed — including at a luxury hotel in Montenegro last year where Rudnev was previously detained.

 

Religious scholar Alexander Neveev described the cult as a “very dangerous pseudo-tantric group” practising “ritual violence” under the guise of spirituality.

Rudnev was released from prison in 2021 and had been living under the radar until his re-emergence in South America.

Now locked up again, he faces a new legal nightmare — as investigators probe whether the other detainees are fellow perpetrators or victims under his twisted spell.

 

The young mother and her newborn have been separated from the group for their safety.

The case is being handled by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Bariloche. A preliminary hearing is expected in the coming days.

The investigation is ongoing.

Democrats believe that the freefall of the stock market over the past two days spurred by President Donald Trump’s tariffs has provided them with a unified attack and messaging plan ahead of the 2026 midterms, Politico reported Friday.

 

Democrats are preparing to use the economy as a cudgel against congressional Republicans, framing their inaction to Trump’s tariffs as complicit in bringing down the economy, according to the report.

 

“I think that the party as a whole needs to be screaming from the rooftops,” Democrat strategist Alejandro Verdin told Politico, referring to the party’s response to Trump’s economic policies.

 

However, Trump and the administration have long acknowledged the short-term pain but have asserted it will pay off over the long haul. Trump said Thursday “the stock is going to boom.”

 

That was echoed by Vice President J.D. Vance later Thursday.

 

"Look, one bad day in the stock market compared to what President Trump said earlier today, and I think he's right about this, we're going to have a booming stock market for a long time because we're reinvesting in the United States of America," Vance told Newsmax on Thursday. "… We care the most about are American workers and about American small businesses. And they're the ones who are really going to benefit from these policies."

 

A National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson said Democrats miss the point that Trump’s policies are about lifting up American workers, a faction long abandoned by the left.

 

“Once upon a time, Democrats backed the American worker — now, they’re all in to support Beijing. President Trump and Republicans are committed to putting American workers and jobs first,” Emily Tuttle told Politico.

 

Instead, Democrats are banking on an economy still in turmoil in 18 months.

The Education Department and Justice Department on Friday announced the creation of a Title IX Special Investigations Team as the number of related cases is increasing.

 

"Protecting women and women's sports is a key priority for this Department of Justice," Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a press release.

 

"This collaborative effort with the Department of Education will enable our attorneys to take comprehensive action when women's sports or spaces are threatened and use the full power of the law to remedy any violation of women's civil rights."

 

The Education Department has already launched investigations into 52 universities in 41 states, accusing the schools of using "racial preferences and stereotypes in education programs and activities."

 

The announcement said the goal of the team is "timely, consistent resolutions to protect students, and especially female athletes, from the pernicious effects of gender ideology in school programs and activities."

 

The collaboration comes on the heels of President Donald Trump's executive order banning transgender athletes from competing on the sports teams they choose.

PALM BEACH, Florida/BEIJING/WASHINGTON, April 4 (Reuters) – China announced additional tariffs of 34% on U.S. goods on Friday, the most serious escalation in a trade war with President Donald Trump that has fed fears of a recession and triggered a global stock market rout.

 

In the standoff between the world’s top two economies, Beijing also announced controls on exports of some rare earths, while Trump doubled down as well, vowing not to change course.

 

China added 11 U.S. bodies to the “unreliable entity” list, which allows Beijing to take punitive actions against foreign entities, including firms linked to arms sales to democratically governed Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory.

 

Other impacted nations like Canada have also readied retaliation in a mounting trade war after Trump raised U.S. tariff barriers to their highest level in more than a century, leading to a plunge in world financial markets.

 

Investment bank JP Morgan said it now sees a 60% chance of the global economy entering recession by year end, up from 40% previously.

 

Wall Street fell sharply at the opening on Friday, after China retaliated with fresh tariffs a day after the Trump administration’s sweeping levies knocked off $2.4 trillion from U.S. equities.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday disputed any economic crash, telling reporters that markets were reacting to the change and would adjust.

 

“Their economies are not crashing. Their markets are reacting to a dramatic change in the global order in terms of trade,” he said at a press conference in Brussels. “The markets will adjust.”

 

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Friday will add his voice to a growing debate at the central bank over whether the Trump administration’s new policies are more likely to stoke higher inflation or undercut growth and employment so much the Fed will have to respond.

(RNS) — Defrocked Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the highest-ranking U.S. Catholic prelate to face criminal charges for the sexual abuse of a minor, died Thursday (April 3), according to Vatican media.

 

In a statement, the current Archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Robert McElroy, told RNS, “At this moment I am especially mindful of those who he harmed during the course of his priestly ministry. Through their enduring pain, may we remain steadfast in our prayers for them and for all victims of sexual abuse.”

 

McCarrick, a greatly influential figure in the U.S. Catholic Church with a reputation as a fundraiser, also led the Diocese of Metuchen and the Archdiocese of Newark in New Jersey before becoming Archbishop of Washington in 2001, later being named cardinal by Pope John Paul II.

 

He was the first cardinal to be stripped of his cardinal rights and resign from the College of Cardinals, making him ineligible to elect the next pope.

 

He spent his last years in the Vianney Renewal Center in Missouri.

 

In 2002, McCarrick was among the U.S. prelates who drafted the “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.” He continued to hold an influential role in the church until 2016.

 

Reports of McCarrick sharing his bed with seminarians and other inappropriate behavior first emerged in 1994, but in 2018, reports from former seminarians and at least two minors in New Jersey detailed accusations that he had engaged in sexual misconduct. The New York Times reported that McCarrick had sexually abused an 11-year-old boy whom he had baptized, James Grein, in 1969. The abuse continued for 20 years.

 

__The criminal case against McCarrick had been suspended since January 2024, after he was found incompetent to stand trial because of his dementia, __but he was laicized in 2019 after a canonical trial found him guilty of “solicitation in the sacrament of confession and sins against the Sixth Commandment with minors and with adults, with the aggravating factor of the abuse of power.”

‘Worse Than Covid’: Trump’s Port Fee Plan Could Upend U.S. Shipping Schedules

STAMFORD, CT — Shipping industry executives are considering options to address Trump administration policy changes, under consideration or enacted, that could significantly disrupt operations, speakers said here this week at the 40th annual Connecticut Maritime Association annual meeting.

 

Containership operators, for example, are weighing radical reconfiguration of ship schedules to avoid costly ship call-based port fees being considered by the Trump administration.

 

Should operators decide to reroute their vessels to major US “load center” ports, at the expense of smaller secondary ones, to reduce exposure to new fees, “it would absolutely crush us,” said Bethann Rooney, port director for the Port of New York and New Jersey. “We need to prepare to work effectively,” she said.

 

PONY/NJ is the busiest container port on the East Coast and among the busiest in the US.

 

The result “would be far worse than we saw on the West Coast during the (COVID-19) pandemic,” Rooney said during a presentation on Wednesday.

 

In early 2021, at the height of the pandemic, ports in San Pedro Bay experienced unprecedented congestion. Then, more than 100 ships sat at anchor awaiting an available berth at either the Port of Los Angeles or Long Beach, CA. San Pedro ports are the primary American gateway for imports from Asia.

 

Rerouting container ships to PONY/NJ from smaller East Coast ports would roughly double PONY/NJ container throughput to more than 16 million TEU containers annually, Rooney said.

 

Containership operators are considering major schedule adjustments to mitigate the impact of potential Trump administration-imposed port fees, as outlined in a recent memo from the US Trade Representative. Foreign-flagged ships calling at US ports would be subject to the fees, specific terms to be determined. The fees are sought to create an incentive to build and subsequently employ US-flagged commercial vessels.

 

Separately, three niche New England port operators are continuing to support building and maintenance operations at nearby wind farms that have operating permits. These ports are doing so following the Trump administration’s issuing of an Executive Order halting processing of permits to develop additional offshore wind farms in federal waters. (To offset any potential reduction in wind farm-related traffic, the three ports — located in New Bedford and Salem, MA and Quonset Point, RI — are working to attract heavy-lift and project cargo, representatives said at the conference.)

 

Schedule modifications, employed to reduce the impact of Trump-backed port fees, would significantly disrupt both liner or scheduled operations and services provided by ships under charter, other speakers said.

 

“Bifurcation of markets (tied to a two-tiered port market) would make shipping a lot more complex,” said Selena Challocombe, legal counsel for Intertanko, which represents independent tanker owners.

 

Drafting charter parties to mitigate the impact of the Trump administration’s proposed fees “is going to be complicated” because they are policy, not market-driven, said Michael Lund, who is chief operating officer for the Baltic and International Maritime Council, which provides many standard ship chartering contracts.

 

However, any resultant ship scheduling disruption may be short-lived, said Morten Arntzen, a senior advisor to Macquarie Bank. That is because Trump’s successor, when assuming office in January 2029, could overturn what industry executives warn would be a costly and disruptive requirement.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio refuted the idea that economies are crashing due to President Donald Trump's tariffs on U.S. trade partners.

 

Appearing at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, Rubio was asked how the U.S. can expect allies to spend more on defense when "their economies are crashing," according to one reporter.

 

"Their economies are not crashing," Rubio told reporters. "Their markets are reacting to a dramatic change in the global order in terms of trade. And so what happens is pretty straight forward. If you're a company, and you make a bunch of your products in China, and all of a sudden shareholders or people that play the stock market realize that it's going to cost a lot more to produce in China, your stock is going to go down.

 

"But ultimately, the markets, as long as they know what the rules are going to be moving forward, and as long as that's set and you can sustain where you're going to be, the markets will adjust. Businesses around the world, including in trade, in global trade, they just need to know what the rules are. Once they know what the rules are, they will adjust to those rules."

 

Rubio spoke two days after Trump declared a 10% baseline tax on imports from all countries and higher tariff rates on dozens of nations that run trade surpluses with the United States.

 

China's finance ministry then said Friday it would impose additional tariffs of 34% on all U.S. goods from April 10.

 

The tariff war has sent shockwaves through global financial markets and raised fears of an economic downturn, with investment bank JP Morgan forecasting a 60% chance of the global economy entering a recession by year-end, up from 40% previously.

 

Rubio, though, said markets will recover as Trump looks out for the American worker.

 

"I don't think it's fair to say economies are crashing," Rubio said. "Markets are crashing because markets are based on the stock value of companies who today are embedded in modes of production that are bad for the United States.

 

"We're the largest consumer market in the world, and yet the only thing we export is services, and we need to stop that. We need to get back to a time where we're a country that can make things. And to do that, we have to reset the global order of trade."

 

He added, "We have to be able to make things to provide jobs for Americans. That's it. It's that simple."

A federal judge on Friday ruled that the Federal Emergency Management Agency violated a previous ruling and must distribute millions in grants to nongovernment organizations in Democrat-controlled states.

 

U.S. District Judge John McConnell wrote that "FEMA's manual review process violates the court's preliminary injunction order" imposed in response to a lawsuit by several states over the Trump administration's blanket freeze on federal grants and loans.

 

He added that the agency "must immediately comply with the plain text" of the preliminary injunction order "not to pause or otherwise impede the disbursement of appropriated federal funds to the States."

 

The ruling comes just a week after FEMA moved to freeze $10 billion in disaster aid for nonprofit groups while it conducts a review to ensure that the funds cannot be used to help illegal immigrants.

 

The Justice Department had argued in a court filing that the agency was complying with the order, saying that "FEMA's manual review process has nothing to do with the [Office of Management and Budget] directive and is expressly not a pause or freeze on funding — it is instead a change to the manner in which FEMA processes and approves payment requests."

 

However, McConnell found that the review "essentially imposes an indefinite categorical pause on payments" and later described it as an attempt to "covertly" enact President Donald Trump's order to prevent sanctuary cities from receiving federal funding.

 

"The record makes clear that FEMA's manual review process imposes an indefinite pause on the disbursement of federal funds to the states, based on funding freezes dictated" partly by Trump's executive orders targeting sanctuary cities, McConnell wrote.

Most people that are in this average are part time workers or also students. This where they start a job and are in college or other things.

 

It also does not factor part time jobs for woman that take them in this way.

Let’s do the math average job in a factory like cars is around 65,000 a year starting so on. Then you take 228,000 jobs that where just added say you pay 5% tax for the income of the jobs that this factory has. Say mult factory move back and 50,000 jobs come back.

 

I’d you impose tariffs on other countries so factories make products in the US nor other countries this gives jobs.

 

You take 65,000 (starting pay) x 50000 (# of jobs created) = 3,250,000,000

 

You then take 3.25 billion dollars x .05 say state tax

 

162,500,000 In tax… just state tax this is just a number… adjust for state or federal tax rate so on for income.

 

You then say 228,000 jobs same formula

 

You get 14,820,000,000 x tax

So say this happens you are creating this type of money to fund government and people to spend it in the country. This is why I’d you add this many jobs or is a big deal to the economy if you have 4 quarters of 250 about jobs added then or can mean you generate 100 billion dollars this is not including the corporate tax or taxes that people spend money so this is just an idea of income tax.

 

This should be taught in high school and expanded on in college.

This where the numbers work we have an aging demographic in the US that likes to see 401 k go up which may for a short time if factories go over seas but long term it does not work. This why state and federal retirement should be in some areas of US supported area or they take a penalty same unions may also have things applying in this way to support unions and industry in this aspect. This is the aspect of how the numbers work if you can’t understand this you do not belong on government or this conversation. If you understand but still say it is better like some do then that is your choice…

 

So you think that by imposing tariffs will do this… as I bet Trump already talked to factories to tell them you should make it in America and it will benefit you in profit.

This is a fact to ask if they had Trump talk to business first before the tariffs where placed down may have been done anyways but for the most part they talked to companies like GM and Ford to bring companies back to the US for production of parts so on. You see the stickers that say 65% Mexico so on in this way this means that this amount was made not in the US this was a work around I think they did saying that part of it was produced in the America and not subject to the same taxes so on as if all of it was not built in America.

-Much of the work being done in select divisions of the FBI must happen in silence. The Director and I are briefed on it every morning. The threats are real, but I assure you that the commitment of our agents in these spaces is real too. If you’re plotting to hurt us, we will not rest until we hunt you down. This where I am more of a freak market person and not Union but in some industries I can understand to a good point so on major factories large enough or ship ports police unions the fire department so on all of these things obviously have unions mostly for liability. Cars are a thing where they likely are less dangerous to make then in the past. I however am not completely up on this subject so I do not feel I should comment on if it is as dangerous for liability as it once was. I just assume it is safer is the thing but this also maybe automation. So I do not know how the numbers work out completely here. This where I’d I was ever in a position to give an answer or told to I would study it and then I would give an answer after hopefully visiting is the thing.

 

I do believe that stated that get some type of government assistance in this kinda way should be seen as this is a thing for states to bid for car manufacturers to take place. For some states that are in other industries like tourism something should be consider I think to have a fair playing field in this way it may not be as large as some but it maybe geared at mult sections so on and that it has to have good reason that major factories can’t do business there so on. This is where this is something to look at say Alaska or Hawaii do not have car manufacturers in these places because of location mostly and it is just not practical. Porto Rico and Guam although territory maybe subject to something if looked at so on but to a lesser extent likely then states if they can make qualification I would thing. This where if people would stop fighting Trump it is likely all of this is possible for them to do and bring the economy back to the best as it was ever and even better. This idea is good because it shows why this is something that could be consider so on. But I am not saying it would or could but should be looked at and if approached right say by reps from these states or others so on this could be something to consider is the thing vs everything needs to be for California or larger states in this way.

A North Carolina appeals court ruled Friday that tens of thousands of voters must verify their eligibility in a North Carolina Supreme Court race or risk having their ballots thrown out, The New York Times reported.

 

The decision could lead to the results of last year's election being overturned, the Times said.

 

Judge Jefferson Griffin, a Republican, has been waging legal challenges since he lost to Allison Riggs, a Democrat, in November. Riggs is one of two Democrats on the 7-seat Supreme Court.

 

Griffin, who sits on the appeals court, argued that 65,000 people who voted early or by mail did not provide their required proof of identity when they registered, meaning their ballots must be discarded unless they can provide legitimate proof of identity, the Times reported.

 

The appeals court sided with Griffin, ruling even one unlawful vote could disenfranchise lawful voters, the Times said. Their ruling gives voters 15 business days to "cure their defective registrations."

 

The State of Board of Elections would then "omit from the final count the votes of those voters who fail to timely cure their registration defects," according to the Times.

 

The panel also ruled that voters who have never lived in the state but are registered to vote there should have their ballots tossed. A 2011 state law previously said those people were allowed to vote in North Carolina.

 

Riggs won the election by 734 votes while Griffin has refused to concede. Griffin recused himself from the appeals court ruling, the Times reported.

 

The race between Riggs and Griffin is the last uncertified statewide race in the nation.
